Full textThe aim of this research is to try and understand to what degree innovative collective measures put forward by an actor-network of professionals constitute a vehicle for adoption of CSR principles and how they can be adopted and implemented by SME managers. In relation to methodology used, this paper starts with an exploratory study based on interviews and replies provided by way of questionnaire sent to a sample group of managers in the Indre-et-Loire region. The results of the exploratory study highlight the role of collective initiative and we then go on to further examination using qualitative methodology (Yin, 2003). The professional peer group network then becomes our main focus. Finally, the overall performance of the Tours section of the Centre for Young Business Leaders is then analyzed

Full textThis thesis aims to study the role of balanced scorecard in managing the performance of SMEs. More specifically, it is to provide an explanatory framework to the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards. The literature review has allowed, on one hand, to clarify and define key concepts used in this work and, on the other hand, to present and discuss a mixed theoretical framework on which is based the development of our research model. Following a hypothetico-deductive reasoning, an explanatory model to the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards is proposed. This model incorporates one dependent variable "Performance management", nine explanatory variables (organizational and behavioral types), and one intermediate variable "Characteristics of balanced scorecards".This model is then tested empirically. The collected data are processed using an exploratory analysis and a confirmatory analysis by the methods of structural equations. The results help to highlight the determinants of the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards. Thus, theoretically, they enrich the previous work on the balanced scorecard and, practically, they provide to management controllers and managers an explanatory framework of the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards

Full textKnowledge is vital for organizations, particularly in today’s Industry 4.0 context. Knowledge Management (KM) plays a critical role in an organization's success. Although KM has been relatively well-studied in large organizations, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) receive less attention. SMEs face unique challenges in KM, requiring a tailored KM framework. Our study aims to define a framework addressing their challenges while leveraging their inherent strengths. This thesis presents a dedicated and comprehensive SME KM framework, offering dedicated solutions from knowledge acquisition and representation to exploitation: (1) a dedicated knowledge acquisition process based on the Scrum framework, an agile methodology, (2) a dedicated knowledge representation model based on semi-structured KG, and (3) a dedicated knowledge exploitation process based on knowledge-relatedness RS. This research was conducted in collaboration with Axsens-bte, an SME specializing in consultancy and training. The partnership with Axsens-bte has provided invaluable insights and practical experiences, contributing to developing the proposed KM framework and highlighting its relevance and applicability in real-world SME contexts

Full textOver the past ten years, the ERP market is moving towards SMEs. However, the benefits of this type of software for SMEs, deployed more recently, remains to be demonstrated. With these challenges in mind, this research project seeks to answer two central research questions: (1) What theoretical framework can be used to measure ERP contribution to firm performance ? (2) To what extent can the use of an ERP by a PMI affect its performance ?After having defined a research model based on the state of art, a quantitative survey was conducted to obtain the opinion of 284 French industrial SMEs through a questionnaire administered over the Internet. This statistical information was analyzed by the structural equations method, in a SEM-PLS approach. From the initial Dehning & Richardson (2002) model, this work proposes an enriched model allowing to apprehend the main ERP contribution factors to firm performance. In addition, it allows new results on ERP benefits for industrial SMEs. From an operationalized research model, it brings new and tangible elements allowing to conclude to a positive contribution, for this type of companies. This research offers opportunities to extend the field of investigation to service SMEs, in France or abroad. Similarly, the model could be expanded beyond the functional scope of ERP, such as CRM, SCM or other e-commerce solution

Full textThe purpose of this thesis in management science is to assess the role of Information Systems in triggering and propagating the kind of problems faced by small and medium-sized enterprises in the food industry in France. The thesis will explore the relationship between misalignments in the uses of Information Systems and the difficulties with which SMEs are often confronted. The field of research is composed, on the one hand, of company surveys, used to elaborate a composite performance indicator, and on the other, the 2006 COI-TIC survey, from which four sets of indicators concerning the uses of Information Systems were extrapolated.Applying a comprehensive approach, the thesis defines the impact of the misalignment of Information Systems on performance dynamics. It also highlights, notably, the importance for SMEs in the food industry of IT coordination between companies and between those companies and their stakeholders, and examines the central role of changes involving IT projects. Lastly, regardless of their performances, companies face major difficulties in appropriating uses of Information Systems

Full textThe economic stimulus package in late 2008 in France raises again the question of what the purpose of public procurement is. As instruments for the Administration, they have become the tools of public policy, economic levers. And their last function, in association with the support of the growth and economic potential of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), business model of reference, because the most represented, restarts the ongoing debate between facilitating and favoritism to the SME for their access to public procurement. Yet, the favoritism, as implemented by the american Small Business Act of 1953, culminating in the implementation of the European principles of public procurement: open access to public procurement, equal treatment of candidates and transparent procedures. Successive reforms of the Procurement Code have not ceased to integrate devices for SMEs: some have been canceled, as the introduction of quota policies in certain procedures or increased levels of mandatory disclosure ; others were held, in the case of the allotment or creation of simplified regulation. Facilitation becomes synonymous of relief procedures, regulatory simplification, and benefits all traders, regardless of size. Why, then, focus the debate on the profit made by all SMEs, alongside the introduction of a discriminant scheme only for innovative SMEs. The break may be not only between SMEs and large companies, but between the SMEs themselves in their access to public markets

Full textEach country deals with the problem of bankruptcy and financial distress. In France, the small and medium size companies are particularly concerned by this situation. In this research, we study the cycle of distress and rescue among this companies. We investigate the role of stakeholders, which take a prominent part in the failing firm. This argument is considered as an important variable during the rescue process, since significant changes in corporate governance occur when firms face bankruptcy. Precisely, thanks to the contractual theory of organizations, we try to explain the reaction and the behaviour of stakeholders during the restructuring period. We then test the hypothesis using a sample of 65 SMEs, which have achieved a reorganization plan. The results of this analysis highlights the role of management and the main determinant of support granted by employees, banks, clients and suppliers

Fortis increase a company must invest by getting benefits or reinforcing the acquired position. Facing with this fundamental choice, which is investment, the way of behaviouring is different according as you own to a big or small and middle - sized company. For this latter, the heterogeneity in population which composes it does constitute the result of a great disparity in attitudes and also in settlers reference values, values and attitudes are susceptible to justify individual behavior. Full textCommon enterprise evaluation business practices are mainly based on financial or accounting references. An actual firm value is estimated on previous results rather than a potentially future wealth. Furthermore, non financials assets, like team qualifications, could be used as well in order to increase a business value. The main thesis goal is to demonstrate a better way for evaluating small businesses value in using non financial assets indicators. The Delphi monographic method was used to demonstrate the relevance of these indicators for small enterprises (virtual firm, regional accounting company of about twenty employees). Results show that an initial estimate made by experts in using evaluation usual ways can be modified when using non financial assets indicators. Present ways for evaluate an enterprise are mainly based on financial or accounting references and the value is estimate with previous result rather than a potentially wealth to come. Non financials assets, like team qualifications, are enable used. The aim of is thesis is to show that using indicator which enable to value non financial assets for a small enterprise lead to a better way of evaluating. After un first selection, the relevance of these indicators was tested through a small enterprise in consulting (virtual firm, regional accounting company of about twenty employees was created for the experimentation). The chosen method, a monographic one, is based on Delphi method. The results show that the initial estimate, made by experts in evaluation using usual ways, can by modificated when we take non financial assets indicators

Full textSmall and mid-sized firms are often confronted with problems of management beyond their human and material resources. One of the major expectations of executives is help from consultants to solve such problems. Accounting specialists are naturally called on by such firms. However, nowadays they aren't ready to satisfy executives's expectations. They feel the need for specific approachs and tools to ease their professional evolution towards more general managerial solutions for such firms. Considering this situation, we've formulated a research problem that takes into account the following points : the specificity of consulting activity to small and mid-sized firms and the development process of such organizations. Then we proposed a solution resulting from action research into the issue so as to conceptualize, formalize and validate a method of overall business diagnosis. By enriching first then making systematic hither-to-fore dispersed and fragmentary knowledge, we have filled in the gaps on knowledge as far as consulting activities towards small and mid-sized firms, as well as contributing to e better understanding of their transitional problems

Full textThe environment in which are immersing small firms (PME) is particulary unstable, which imposes many constraints. Owing to that fact, they are compelled to elaborate strategies for adaptation and development. Economic doctrine presents commonly many possible strategic alternatives which are afforded to firms in generaly. But to put thse strategies in concrete form, requires an uninteruptd poursuit of investment's exertion which is generating an amplification of capital requirement. The selection of capital is nacessarily conditionned by financial equilibrium rule and by financial structure. Consequently, the choice of one or many development strategies is conditionned by the financial structure which is existing at the moment of taking the decision. This constraint displays the existence of small firm's liberty degree singularly skimpy and her inaptitude for opting for all development strategies commonly presented by economic doctrine. The adoption of a development strategy without any bearing with the own capital's level, is susceptible to be in the beginning of the releasing of a latent dialectic process, stirring the small firm towards a paralysing hypertrophy, in truth destroying

Full textThe thesis focuses on the following issue : "How and with what level of success can management systems based on processes be implemented in SMEs ?" The studied systems are quality models such as ISO 9000 standards or TQM (Total Quality Management). But more targeted systems are also examined such as JIT (Just-in-time) or ABM (Activity based Management). The research is based on an empirical study carried out within two Alsatian SMEs during a four year period, as part of a contract between these companies and the BETA laboratory. First, the apparent incompatibility between management tools and the flexible nature of small organizations leads to analyse the content of the process management tools and to question about their universal characteristic. Then, if the instruments can actually be adapted to SMEs specificities, what do we know about the implementation unfolding ? The decision to launch the implementation project is made by the head of the firms, who follows it through. So, it is important to understand who is the entrepreneur or the manager and how he interacts with his environment. By observing real behaviours, key-factors can be recognized in order to explain the success or the failure of management systems implementation in SMEs, in particular the roles of internal and external "relay runners" of the project

Full textThe study of Tunisian Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs) difficulties to access to funds shows that these enterprises experience a “banking integration deficit” that can be explained by credit rationing theory. The reluctance of Tunisian banks to become involved in SMEs' financing is largely explained by the structural and financial characteristics of the Tunisian banking system whereof of the dominance of commercial banks results in a limitation of competition on the financing cost. It is also explained by the weaknesses experienced by Tunisia as regards the sharing information and the creditors legal protection throughout the financing transaction. The empirical verification of Tunisian SMEs' credit rationing on the Tunisian bank credit market is founded on an estimate of a disequilibrium model on the basis of a panel data set of 1760 Tunisian SMEs over the period 2001-2006. Results show that Tunisian SMEs, dependent on bank credit, seek to avoid the call for this source of financing every time they experience an increase in their internal resources or have recourse to trade credit. The very strong risk aversion of banks makes the credit supply decision mainly dependent on real guarantee, and results to an average proportion of 90% - partially or totally - credit rationed enterprises

Full textThe aim of this thesis is the study of transnational cooperation agreements between european SME managers. Their setting-up and functioning are analysed through four case studies. Four variables have been used to study the process : the will to cooperate explained by the interest in cooperating, trust and commitment. The thesis has six chapters. The first three define the european SME and cooperation agreements from a conceptual, theoretical and classification point of view. The fourth describes the qualitative inductive approach we have selected. The last two chapters focus on the analysis of the data collected and the generation of a substantial theory. The results show that the interest in cooperating and trust are perceptual, partially rationalized variables that influence commitment. They are both results and prerequisites. Collective and individual interests as well as personal and mutual trust have to be considered. These two variables can also be deleterious factors. Other results are the search for flexibility a regional rather than a national approach, the non oppotunistic behaviour of the managers involved, the co-influence of partners and other actors, the lack of correlation between durability and success, cessation and failure of the cooperation agreements that have been studied

Full textOrganizational innovation is today recognized as a major factor to the survival and development of firms. This is especially true for small and medium-sized businesses, which are defined here as the meeting point between a structuring formalization essential to their development, and a permanent reconstruction of their social system, based on the actors strategic game. We identify the inadequate integration of the latter aspect in organizational change projects as the main reason behind their failure. The purposes of this essay are to understand the role played by the formalization used in purposeful organizational change in order to define its limits ; to characterize a few modeling techniques with regard to the requirements of the process of change in businesses, and to infer contributing elements to Value development in SME. The state of the art and the choice of a few methodological tools of modeling techniques and formal representations enabled us to build an engineering of organizational development, which was put to the test in two cases of organizational change and which made it possible to assess the role played by formal representation in the process of change. Our research reveals the existence of a corpus of data which cannot be grasped by formal models alone. An integrated approach to change, including the technical, organizational, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions, calls for the construction of links between the formal model and the organizational actors' representation. These links have a structuring, rooting, mediation and mediatization role, and thus define a general framework for the integration of formal and individual representations in purposeful organizational change

Full textThis thesis explores the financial and organizational strategies adopted by small businesses in order to conciliate growth and independence. The four chapters present theoretical and empirical contributions to this issue. The first chapter tests the relationship between family control and growth on a large sample of French small businesses. The negative relationship between family control and growth relates to the fact that family controlled small businesses have a higher propensity to adopt patient growth behavior. The second chapter presents a theoretical framework that explains why small businesses hold large amount of cash. The model demonstrates why small businesses, with illiquid growth opportunities, need constituting capital in advance to maintain their growth capacity. The third chapter investigates whether small business groups (SBG) are an organizational strategy that promotes growth. The results show that grouping small businesses promotes small business development, because SBGs improve capital allocation. The last chapter explores entrepreneur motivation to grow the business by building a SBG. According to the results SBGs are built in order to immunize entrepreneur wealth exposure to the business risk, not to increase entrepreneur private benefits of control.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) face new challenges and find themselves in a position to confront them in order to survive. We therefore found it significant to focus on the SMEs in Lebanon , a country living under permanent risk of war since 1975, located in an area impacted by conflicts of all kinds for several decades. As a result, the country bows under the weight of a lasting economical crisis, which on hand influences these SMEs by a decrease in demand, the consequence of a fall in consumer's purchasing power, and on the other hand, the decline of competitiveness. An essential modernity expression is illustrated in the internet phenomenon. Its application on SMEs and SMI (small and medium industries) is unavoidable, leading to the need of a study of the impact and difficulties causes by this application, as well as the Lebanese SMEs keys to success, and lastly to propose solutions that can be adapted in terms of strategy. Several topics have been studied through our thesis, including whether the new international economy, and moreover the massive development of the giant multinational businesses, jeopardize the Lebanese SMEs, as well as the data processing techniques adoption requirement in the SMEs activities structure, especially in the online business application , and the SMEs capacity to exceed the Lebanese frontier. In response to these points, we produced a theoretical framework to identify the specificities of Lebanese SMEs facing the globalization movement. We created an SME as our case study, the objective being to experiment with a geographical zone in order to expand the SMEs activities to embrace the planet. This experience permitted the noting of several observations for a different perspective on the globalization process, and subsequently an adopted tactics test and the evaluation of our strategy by defining and justifying the selected method, the observations to be collected and the analysis method used. The ultimate point raised in our thesis was the creation of a barometer with an aim of measuring the performance of SMEs in Lebanon, a step encouraged by several international factors, particularly the 2008 international economic crisis which originated in United States
