Full textThis research proposes a study of the determinants of the Banking Pool structure forSMEs. Msts of analyzing the enterprise main bank choice, its relationships with the secondary banks and the number of banks that it needs. We study this problem in the banking theoryframework. The thesis is organized as follows. In the first chapter, we present a review of the related work. This literature review highlights the particular status of the main bank in the pool, theadvantages and disadvantages of an exclusive or a multi-bank financing as well as the modes of intteractions between the banks. In the second chapter, we show, through a qualitative study based on semi-directive interviews, that the choice of the main bank is determined by the geographical proximity and the decentralized organization of the bank. Others factors, such as the business volume that the bank manages and the duration of the banking relatioship with the client, also appear to be relevant. Multiple bankink relationships are explained both by a desire to put banks into competition and a need to assure a continuous financing. In the third chapter, we provide a quantitative analysis for the choice of the main bank. We find that opaque firms prefer to work with decentralized main banks that are able to provide them relationship lending. We also show more credit rationing for opaque firms dealing with centralized main banks. Finally, in the last chapter, we examine the factors that explain the multiple banking relationships for SMEs. We observe a negative link between the informational opacity of the firm and the number of banks. The borrower quality and the presence of a decentralized main bank affect also its multi-bank strategy

Full textThis research has a theorical and pragmatic view. The concept of "competitive advantage" has been throughly studied, but it still arises many controversies. Although it has been analysed and defined by various research teams, the concept's choosen to study it remain very heterogeneous and unsatisfactory. One of the objectives of this research work is therefore to clarify the concept of "competitive advantage". On the other hand, the concept of "competitive advantage" has not been studied in small business. However, small business face tough competition, and try to escape the agressivity of their competitors. We will prove, in this document that small business are very specific in many aspects and that this specificity makes it very difficult and even hazardous to use for the study of small businesses models and concepts created for the analysis of big businesses. Furthermore, we will show that the analysis of the "competitive advantage" concept when applied to small businesses gives the opportunity to give some "flesh and blood to this sometimes accessively the critical only concept. In this research work, a great importance has been given to the key role of the entrepreneur. We especially focused our attention on the entrepreneur's goals and on the role of its perception in its strategic choices: to enable the identification and the creation of competitive advantage, we have devised some methodological frameworks dedicates to small businesses managers

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to analyze the conditions of choice of the strategy of innovation and its modalities of applications in industrial firms, and this, from about thirty small and medium scale firms. Our contribution in this respect is to highlight problems from a new perspective in the application of functions of innovation within small and medium scale industrial firms. Because technological innovation is largely recognized as a powerful weapon of competitivity over a long period and it often appears as a mythical reference where menace and spectacular opportunities combine. So it has often been considered as a reserved activity to a limited group of firms, generally of large dimension with important research facilities. Then how do we explain that some small and medium scale industrial firms are able to promote some concrete technological innovations despite the limited budget devoted to laboratory research ? how do they make up for their insufficient means of information, technical control or sales promotion as well as their weakness of bargaining power or of their financial capacity ? what are the motivations that lead to innovation, knowing that this strategy is a stake for the future with the risk of high loss and undetermined probability of profit? innovation naturally brings about changes in organizations and growth tendency. However it is possible to think that these transformations bring about problems in small and medium scale industries that are distinct from those within large scale industries

Full textThe objective of this research is to provide a system of thought and action necessary for the management of small and medium-sized firms in Gabon. The elaboration of this approach is based on the dominant cultural value systems prevailing in Gabon. The role of the entrepreneur is therefore seen as that of integrating the dominant cultural value systems in company management process. This new orientation, called community management by objectives (CMO) tries to balance the socio-cultural demands of the members of the community with the needs of the company effectiveness. In this way, the company is considered as a community struggling with the energies and values of its members which are directed towards the satisfaction of the needs of the organization. Just like a kind of interdependence links and individual with his community, so the employee is linked with his company. The underlying natural dispositions of Gabonese people in community life and living makes the establishment of this type of management system possible and thus help to play down resistant attitudes. In fact, the approach of CMO is a kind of transplanting the socio-cultural value systems surrounding a company into the company. This thesis is therefore the first stage of a future empirical research which will be based on the real model of CMO

Full textThis exploratory research examines the issue of the financing decision in small firm using a behavioural approach by looking at how small business leaders make the decision. Executive behaviour is examined using Norton's (1991) theoretical approach to managerial choice, combined with Torres' (2011) financial proximity’s model, to formulate a theoretical conceptual model. The objective is to examine the process of the financing decision, in the spirit of Nussenbaum's (1978) work on the investment decision. The empirical research, which is qualitative in nature, is conducted through case studies according to an interpretative epistemological framework. The resulting results indicate the interest and relevance of the process-based approach to understanding the behaviours of small firms leaders. A behavioral typology is developed that distinguishes leaders from one another, according to their attitudes and behaviors with respect to financing choices

Full textEntrepreneurial theories can explain the great variety of agricultural diversifications by adding the influence of the profile of the manager's performance to the usual analytical propositions. According to a first study of 6 cases , these postulates remain valid in agriculture provided that the specific contingencies peculiar to the sector are taken into account, stemming from a specialized and productivist dominant model, which conditions the strategic vision and the difficulty to diversify. The profile of the manager so revised in term of economic preferences and social references, will explain the diversity of choices of diversifications of 15 firms analysed on a trajectory of more than 10 years. The sector-based vision remains determining, especially for the follower, but the proactive-supply often makes it possible to get rid of the competing and cultural pressures of the environment. Moreover, it appears that profiles and contexts evolve with time

Full textThis research focuses on studying the process of creating small and medium industry in Morocco. It aims to highlight the difficulties and sprigs industrial entrepreneurship in this country and contribute to a clarification of this phenomenon. The first part of this work, the conceptual framework, offers a state of the art cross from the different theories on entrepreneurship. We include in our analysis the creator, the newly created company, and process, all within the framework of Morocco and in order to shed light to our research question. The second part is a development of methodological choices, and empirical research results. We note that the process of creation in the industrial sector is complicated. We are witnessing the advent of a new generation of entrepreneurs more graduated than the old one. Most entrepreneurs have found the idea of creation in the sector of their experience. The main difficulties that are faced throughout the creative process are of financial and to find the skilled workforce. The stability of the regime, geographic location are assets to this country. Nevertheless, efforts must be undertaken to provide a skilled workforce, reduce administrative hassle and the cost of energy

Full textOver the past ten years, the ERP market is moving towards SMEs. However, the benefits of this type of software for SMEs, deployed more recently, remains to be demonstrated. With these challenges in mind, this research project seeks to answer two central research questions: (1) What theoretical framework can be used to measure ERP contribution to firm performance ? (2) To what extent can the use of an ERP by a PMI affect its performance ?After having defined a research model based on the state of art, a quantitative survey was conducted to obtain the opinion of 284 French industrial SMEs through a questionnaire administered over the Internet. This statistical information was analyzed by the structural equations method, in a SEM-PLS approach. From the initial Dehning & Richardson (2002) model, this work proposes an enriched model allowing to apprehend the main ERP contribution factors to firm performance. In addition, it allows new results on ERP benefits for industrial SMEs. From an operationalized research model, it brings new and tangible elements allowing to conclude to a positive contribution, for this type of companies. This research offers opportunities to extend the field of investigation to service SMEs, in France or abroad. Similarly, the model could be expanded beyond the functional scope of ERP, such as CRM, SCM or other e-commerce solution

Full textKnowledge is vital for organizations, particularly in today’s Industry 4.0 context. Knowledge Management (KM) plays a critical role in an organization's success. Although KM has been relatively well-studied in large organizations, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) receive less attention. SMEs face unique challenges in KM, requiring a tailored KM framework. Our study aims to define a framework addressing their challenges while leveraging their inherent strengths. This thesis presents a dedicated and comprehensive SME KM framework, offering dedicated solutions from knowledge acquisition and representation to exploitation: (1) a dedicated knowledge acquisition process based on the Scrum framework, an agile methodology, (2) a dedicated knowledge representation model based on semi-structured KG, and (3) a dedicated knowledge exploitation process based on knowledge-relatedness RS. This research was conducted in collaboration with Axsens-bte, an SME specializing in consultancy and training. The partnership with Axsens-bte has provided invaluable insights and practical experiences, contributing to developing the proposed KM framework and highlighting its relevance and applicability in real-world SME contexts

The manager’s centrality in very small firm is at the origin of a confusion between the very small firm and the individual who steers it. This research develops a detailed understanding of the behavior of consumption of the manager under the double angle of the customer / supplier relationship on one hand and individual determiners in its behavior on the other hand. The concept of personal guidance / professional of the leader of very small firm is defined and a scale(ladder) of measure is proposed. A conceptual framework derived of the ethics individual is mobilized for establishing the validity of this scale in the context of the leaders of hairdressing salon

In order to understand what are the objects, the actors and the vectors of organizational learning in these companies, we conducted four case studies in the moroccan context. Our results show that beyond certain common elements, Medium-sized Family Businesses can have very different and sometimes non-specific learning configurations. This work is a first step to bridge the theoretical and empirical gap that exists on the topic and it launches the debate on the issue of specificity

Full textIt is because small companies in the tourist sector should be in a position to serve as the mainspring for the development of the Corsican economy, that some researchers have chosen to look in more detail at their prospects for development. Not all sectors of tourist activity obtain the same working results. Indeed, the open air hotel industry (campsites. . . ) have recorded the poorest figures. As such we should : - question the criteria accounting for the choice of the tourist clientele, - suggest corrective action by means of marketing tools, - propose and provide to managers a check list of the different compagny processes in order to enable them to meet the expectations of the clientele over a sustainable period. It would be appropriate, first of all, to make a synthesis of existing studies, concerning consumer behaviour patterns. This would enable us to have a clear idea of the conditions determining the choice of the tourist clientele. On the basis of these results, a marketing plan could be drawn up in order to improve the results of companies in the tourist trade. However, such a strategy would no doubt be insufficient without the support of the public authorities and the local government. In order to reach a sufficient level of competitiveness, the local authorities will need to improve their tourist policies. At the same time, company managers will be obliged to make the appropriate choices if they wish to develop their activity. In these conditions and in answer to Nadine Levratto who questions the economy of Corsica in these terms, "Does live exist when the financial aid has gone. . . ", in the light of the measures mentioned in this study, it can be said that tourism has the means of becoming the lever for the development of the Corsican economy

Full textThis thesis aims to study the role of balanced scorecard in managing the performance of SMEs. More specifically, it is to provide an explanatory framework to the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards. The literature review has allowed, on one hand, to clarify and define key concepts used in this work and, on the other hand, to present and discuss a mixed theoretical framework on which is based the development of our research model. Following a hypothetico-deductive reasoning, an explanatory model to the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards is proposed. This model incorporates one dependent variable "Performance management", nine explanatory variables (organizational and behavioral types), and one intermediate variable "Characteristics of balanced scorecards".This model is then tested empirically. The collected data are processed using an exploratory analysis and a confirmatory analysis by the methods of structural equations. The results help to highlight the determinants of the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards. Thus, theoretically, they enrich the previous work on the balanced scorecard and, practically, they provide to management controllers and managers an explanatory framework of the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards

The results indicate that the Relationship Superior how the dynamic capacity of the company, which adds uniqueness, competitive differentials and the durability to relational strategy, because this strategy is created from control mechanisms strategic risks and organizational learning, which strengthens the existing collaboration processes, thereby increasing engagement between the company and its public and obtaining greater profit to compete

Full textThe purpose of this thesis in management science is to assess the role of Information Systems in triggering and propagating the kind of problems faced by small and medium-sized enterprises in the food industry in France. The thesis will explore the relationship between misalignments in the uses of Information Systems and the difficulties with which SMEs are often confronted. The field of research is composed, on the one hand, of company surveys, used to elaborate a composite performance indicator, and on the other, the 2006 COI-TIC survey, from which four sets of indicators concerning the uses of Information Systems were extrapolated.Applying a comprehensive approach, the thesis defines the impact of the misalignment of Information Systems on performance dynamics. It also highlights, notably, the importance for SMEs in the food industry of IT coordination between companies and between those companies and their stakeholders, and examines the central role of changes involving IT projects. Lastly, regardless of their performances, companies face major difficulties in appropriating uses of Information Systems

Full textThe economic stimulus package in late 2008 in France raises again the question of what the purpose of public procurement is. As instruments for the Administration, they have become the tools of public policy, economic levers. And their last function, in association with the support of the growth and economic potential of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), business model of reference, because the most represented, restarts the ongoing debate between facilitating and favoritism to the SME for their access to public procurement. Yet, the favoritism, as implemented by the american Small Business Act of 1953, culminating in the implementation of the European principles of public procurement: open access to public procurement, equal treatment of candidates and transparent procedures. Successive reforms of the Procurement Code have not ceased to integrate devices for SMEs: some have been canceled, as the introduction of quota policies in certain procedures or increased levels of mandatory disclosure ; others were held, in the case of the allotment or creation of simplified regulation. Facilitation becomes synonymous of relief procedures, regulatory simplification, and benefits all traders, regardless of size. Why, then, focus the debate on the profit made by all SMEs, alongside the introduction of a discriminant scheme only for innovative SMEs. The break may be not only between SMEs and large companies, but between the SMEs themselves in their access to public markets

Full textThis thesis explores the financial and organizational strategies adopted by small businesses in order to conciliate growth and independence. The four chapters present theoretical and empirical contributions to this issue. The first chapter tests the relationship between family control and growth on a large sample of French small businesses. The negative relationship between family control and growth relates to the fact that family controlled small businesses have a higher propensity to adopt patient growth behavior. The second chapter presents a theoretical framework that explains why small businesses hold large amount of cash. The model demonstrates why small businesses, with illiquid growth opportunities, need constituting capital in advance to maintain their growth capacity. The third chapter investigates whether small business groups (SBG) are an organizational strategy that promotes growth. The results show that grouping small businesses promotes small business development, because SBGs improve capital allocation. The last chapter explores entrepreneur motivation to grow the business by building a SBG. According to the results SBGs are built in order to immunize entrepreneur wealth exposure to the business risk, not to increase entrepreneur private benefits of control.

Full textThe study of Tunisian Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs) difficulties to access to funds shows that these enterprises experience a “banking integration deficit” that can be explained by credit rationing theory. The reluctance of Tunisian banks to become involved in SMEs' financing is largely explained by the structural and financial characteristics of the Tunisian banking system whereof of the dominance of commercial banks results in a limitation of competition on the financing cost. It is also explained by the weaknesses experienced by Tunisia as regards the sharing information and the creditors legal protection throughout the financing transaction. The empirical verification of Tunisian SMEs' credit rationing on the Tunisian bank credit market is founded on an estimate of a disequilibrium model on the basis of a panel data set of 1760 Tunisian SMEs over the period 2001-2006. Results show that Tunisian SMEs, dependent on bank credit, seek to avoid the call for this source of financing every time they experience an increase in their internal resources or have recourse to trade credit. The very strong risk aversion of banks makes the credit supply decision mainly dependent on real guarantee, and results to an average proportion of 90% - partially or totally - credit rationed enterprises

Full textAn integrated approach is adopted to study the problem of provision of corporate education for micro and small enterprises, comprising the areas of information science, information and knowledge management, competitive and organizational intelligence. In search for an answer for the given problem a conceptual and a methodological framework were developed. The main focus was the development of specific skills for entrepreneurial management through a new model of corporate education based on e-learning. The operational approach related to this model proposed the structure of the Telecentres of Information and Business of the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade. The building up of the proposal examined the role of learning in the contemporary society; considered the context of micro-enterprises and small business in Brazil; identified technological possibilities for learning, specially e-learning models developed for corporate and distance education focused on micro enterprises and small business; investigated the potential, dynamics and the essential elements of the Brazilian Telecentres of Information and Business network. Based on these elements theoretical, methodological and operational frameworks were developed for the provision of training for micro and small businesses in Brazil. A prototype was developed for business dedicated to the craft sector in the Amazon region. The chosen training strategies included: a) digital inclusion and communities of practice support mechanisms; b) concepts of situated learning; c) partnerships. The application of the model in the case study, entitled E-TIN (electronic telecentre), occurred in the telecentre for the Micro and Small Industry Union of the State of Rondonia. The feasibility of the prototype counted with the partnership of the Telecenter of Information and Business Information Association (ATN) as the Learning Management System; and the University of Brasilia (UnB) as the content provider. The prototype has adopted the community of practice entitled "Knowledge management for micro enterprises" and the distance learning course "Amazon Crafts". The study recommended the most appropriate technology for adult training, considering the existing patterns among the partners and the evolution of Web 2. 0 as well. The research concludes by confirming the emergence of new educational models aimed for adults; identifies communities of practice as fundamental to the learning process; highlights the importance of corporate education for knowledge management actions; and offers a solution, which, it believes, can provoke a true knowledge revolution towards the apprenticeship of micro enterprises and small businesses using the Brazilian Telecentres of Information and Business platform. Among the possibilities for further investigations this research suggests the development of specific studies for the leverage of areas of stagnant economic entrepreneurship using this or an alternative corporate education model
