Abstract:
The use of hydraulic barriers in sanitary landfills has become an impeccable means of protecting the groundwater system from leachate. A question to be asked is, can these barriers continue to impede the migration of leachate over a long period? This paper investigates the phenomenon of leachate migration in compacted laterite soil used as liner in sanitary landfills. An experiment was carried out using laterite soil compacted at optimum moisture content using Standard Proctor energy. Leachate was poured on the compacted soil in an acrylic column and its migration was monitored using Digital I

Spatial distribution patterns of two sessile gastropods belonging to Vermetidae, Vermetus triquetrus and Dendropoma petraeum, were studied in June 2001 in north-eastern Sardinia (Mediterranean Sea, Italy). Density of individuals was assessed within quadrats positioned on a shallow (0·1–1 m depth) rocky substrate of different lithological types (limestone and granite), at a hierarchy of spatial scales. Density of D. petraeum is significantly greater on granite than on limestone, while V. triquetrus does not show any differences related to rock type.

Abstract:
The reproductive biology of the gregarious Mediterranean vermetid gastropod Dendropoma petraeum (Mollusca: Gastropoda) has been studied in the south-eastern coast of Spain. It apparently is a gonochorisric species with the sex ratio biased toward females (71%). A broad peak of more intense reproductive activity occurs in spring months and an inactive reproductive period during winter. The gonad of the males develops about two months before those of females, and storage of sperm by females has been observed. Internal fertilization takes place after the capture of pelagic spermatophores. The egg

Abstract:
In hole nesting birds and especially in tits Parus mixed clutches, laid by two or more species in the same nest, are often observed (Merilä 1994). In this paper we report four mixed clutches of Parus caeruleus and P. major in nest boxes in the Presidential Estate of Castelporziano (41°44’N, 12°24'E), where populations of these two species, studied since 1991 (Bellavita & Sorace 1994, Sorace et al. 1994, Petrassi et al. 1997), reach very high density, superior to those in other areas of Central Italy (Bellavita & Sorace 1994).

A list of lichen species collected in the Jewish cemeteries in Podlasie in northeastern Poland is presented. In total, 83 species have been recorded. They include epilithic (53 species), epiphytic (28) and epigeic (11) lichens. Eleven species belong to the group of threatened lichens in Poland (Evernia prunastri, Hypogymnia tubulosa, Psilolechia lucida, Ramalina fraxinea, Rhizocarpon grande, Rh. lavatum, Rh. petraeum, Stereocaulon condensatum, S. tomentosum, Xanthoparmelia pulla, X. verruculifera). This paper presents the results of a pilot project which combines, for the first time, biodistance and strontium isotope analyses in the study of human skeletal remains from Early Bronze Age Crete (third millennium bc). Information from these analyses offers, in a direct way, insights into the biological distance, and consequently the gene flow and mobility patterns, among human populations in eastern Crete. The results are synthesised with the evidence of funerary practices in order to explore the nature of interaction among communities in eastern Crete. The biodistance analysis supports a st
