Abstract:
This study considers the application of image analysis in petrography and investigates the possibilities for advancing existing techniques by introducing feature extraction and analysis capabilities of a higher level than those currently employed. The aim is to construct relevant, useful descriptions of crystal form and inter-crystal relations in polycrystalline igneous rock sections. Such descriptions cannot be derived until the `ownership' of boundaries between adjacent crystals has been established: this is the fundamental problem of crystal boundary assignment. An analysis of this problem

Petrographic and chemical data from 29 inclusions from 23 host meteorites were collected with optical light and scanning electron microscopy, allowing for the determination of major phase modal abundance and major element bulk chemistry. The Spraberry Formation is traditionally thought of as deep-water turbidites in the central Midland Basin. At Happy Spraberry field, Garza County, Texas, however, production is from a carbonate interval about 100 feet thick that has been correlated on seismic sections with the Leonardian aged, Lower Clear Fork Formation. The "Happy field" carbonates were deposited on the Eastern Shelf of the Midland Basin and consist of oolitic skeletal grainstones and packstones, rudstones and floatstones, in situ Tubiphytes bindstones, and laminated to rippled, very-fine grained siltstones and sandstones.

The social significance of clay and its sourcing practices is rarely considered in ceramic studies, and is generally restricted to an assessment of technical properties. This subject is thus poorly theorised, ignoring the potential of that first choice and act in the social process of ceramic production. Abstract:
The analysis of ceramic fragments from the site of Puerto Nuevo (1000-500 AC), on the south coast of Peru, reveals a diversified ceramic production and possible long distance interaction networks for ceramics along the coast during the first half of the first millennium before our era. Macroscopic analysis with a hand-held digital low power microscope of fresh cross-sections conducted by Alejandro Rey de Castro allowed classifying the ceramics in different paste groups as well as identifying atypical ceramics. Petrographic analysis conducted by Isabelle Druc on 120 ceramic thin sections of the

>Magister Scientiae - MSc<br>Southern offshore basins of South Africa are well known as potential provinces of hydrocarbon exploration and production. The complex nature of the Bredasdorp sub-basin’s syn-rift architecture (transform fault system) can have adverse effects on reservoir distribution due to periodic local and regional uplift of horsts and grabens. This present investigation focusses on an integrated approach of the 1AT1-V horizon or early Cretaceous sediments in the Bredasdorp sub-basin to identify the depositional environment and provenance of these sediments as well as their rol

Abstract:

From the Bronze Age the Aeolian islands play a prominent role as a strategic passage point into the southern Tyrrhenian sea. Such vitality already occurs from the Capo Graziano facies [EBA-MBA2 (2200-1430 BC)] with the emergence of new settlements on the different islands, with the contacts with the Aegean area (imported LH1/2 pottery from the 17th century BC) and with the large diffusion of ceramic of Aeolian typology in Sicily and Italy. The Aeolian archipelago represents a suitable place for an archaeometrical approach since it is formed of a specific series of volcanic rocks that can be e

This thesis is a comprehensive investigation of the transport containers produced in Roman Sicily over a chronological period composed of five phases: Early Roman period (30 BC–AD 100); Middle Roman period (AD 100–300); Late Roman period (AD 300–440); Vandal Perios (AD 440/535) and Early Byzantine period (AD 536/600). The research investigates the production and transportation of Sicilian foodstuffs (especially wine) from the major ports of the island to Mediterranean ports and northern Europe.
