The physicochemical characteristics of the soil beneath and adjacent to corroded petrol tanks were examined. The result revealed that the moisture content of the soil beneath the tanks was higher (3.2%) than the adjacent soil (0.4%). There was no significant difference in the temperature of the soil beneath and the adjacent one. The pH of the soil beneath the tanks was acidic (5.9). The organic matter of the adjacent soil was higher (1.8%) than the soil beneath the tanks. Purpose Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), known by its ecological qualities, making Algeria has since the 1980s carried out a policy of development of LPG fuel in substitution of traditional fuels and especially petrol. However, following a series of accidents (fires, explosions, etc). that occurred in 1999, 20 years after the introduction of the LPG in France these incidents led to the search for the strengthening of the safety of the installations by better or new technical and/or organizational measures. This strategy consists in establishing a balance between environmental protection and econ

ABSTRACT Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL) was contracted by the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) government to conduct an investigation into the stability and potential oil pollution problem of three ex-whale/seal catcher vessels. The three vessels sunken/semisubmerged at their moorings are located in Grytviken Harbour on the Island of South Georgia located over 900 miles south east of the Falkland Islands. The purpose of the survey was threefold: (1) to corroborate previous surveys and quantify the amount of oil remaining in the three vessels; (2) to recommend a remedial solu

Biosurfactants aid in bioremediation by improving the bioavailability of hydrocarbon contaminants. The objective of this work was to isolate, enumerate and identify bacteria and fungi for their biosurfactant production potential in the atmosphere of five petroleum stations at Tanke, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria using appropriate, standard microbiological methods (haemolysis test, emulsification index test, drop collapse test and oil displacement test). Fourteen bacteria and ten fungi were isolated in this study. The bacterial isolates belong to the genus Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Micrococcus,

The biocorrosion of carbon steel poses a risk for ships combining seawater and fuel in metal ballast tanks. Ballast tanks were simulated by duplicate reactors containing carbon steel coupons and either petroleum F76 (petro-F76), Fischer–Tropsch F76 (FT-F76), or a 1:1 mix of both fuels, to investigate whether the alternative fuel FT-F76 influenced this risk. The polycarbonate reactors were inoculated with seawater, and the control reactors did not receive fuel. The reactors were monitored for 400 days, and they all reached a pH and open circuit potential where elemental iron was oxidized, indic

The article discusses the future of mobility in the light of energy resources. Fossil fuel will not be available for a long time - not to mention its growing environmental and political conflicts. In analysing the potential of biofuel it is argued that the high demands of modern mobility can hardly be fulfilled in the future. Furthermore, the change into using biofuel will probably lead to increasing conflicts between the fuel market and the food market, as well as to conflicts with regional agricultural networks in the third world. Petrol imperialism might be replaced by bio imperialism. Ther

The article is devoted to the survey of the petrol tank fleet from the point of view of availability and size of the transported product spill zone. Based on the results of measurements, the final characteristics of the spill zones were determined: the length along the axis of the tank boiler, the angle of the zone, the length of the arc, the area of the spill zone. Probabilistic characteristics are calculated and integral distribution functions for each parameter are constructed. It is established that distribution of geometric characteristics of the spill zones is close to the normal law. Th

In Nigeria, it is standard practice to discharge petrochemical compounds on sewage degradation in a septic tank, which has led to consistent sewage dislodgement in the septic tank that serves our household. The study was carried out to determine the effect of some petrochemical products, such as petrol, kerosene, and diesel. Some laboratory tests were conducted, which included biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, conductivity, and total coliform count. Under aerobic conditions, the researchers built four different experimental sewage treatment systems in the lab.
