Abstract:
Dying for a Paycheck: How Modern Management Harms Employee Health and Company Performance – and What We Can Do About It. Jeffrey Pfeffer. New York, New York: Harper Business, 2018, 272 pp., ISBN 13: 978-0062800923 Why isn’t there a sustainability plan for humans in their workplace? Almost every serious multinational company has a sustainability policy concerning the environmental pollution. Companies are obliged to make EIR (Environmental Impact Reports). However, when it comes to the human resources, no policies are set into place to protect the physical and mental wellbeing of their employees. If there are attempts made to ban toxic products and processes, why isn`t there a protection against toxic management systems? This is one of the challenging questions Jeffrey Pfeffer presents in his latest book “Dying for the paycheck”. No, there is no error, the title indeed is “Dying for the paycheck”. Pfeffer explains his provocative title in an interview with Dan Schawbel: “Two colleagues and I estimated that about one-half of the 120,000 excess deaths from workplace exposures annually was preventable” (retrieved from Dan Schawbel personal branding blog: http://www.personalbrandingblog.com/jeffrey-pfeffer-employers-care-health-employees/). These numbers are being put into perspective by comparison to 27 European countries and Pfeffer’s conclusion is that by estimate, 60,000, or half the death, and about 63 billion, or one-third of the excess costs, might be preventable (Pfeffer, chapter 2, page 6).

Abstract:
Purpose – For insights into the debate between consultants who advocate authentic, character-based leadership and those that believe leadership is primarily an exercise of political power, S & L interviewed Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer, author of Leadership BS: Fixing Workplaces and Careers One Truth at a Time. Design/methodology/approach – Professor Pfeffer believes “By any measure or set of relevant measures, the leadership industry has failed and continues to do so.” The interviewer asks him why he reached this conclusion and what implications this has for practitioners. Findings – Simply put, leaders need to be true to what others need from them, not to how they may be feeling. Practical implications – Professor Pfeffer offers a reminder of the enduring functionality of political skills and acumen in the workplace, which many adherents of the “inspirational leadership” approach don’t seem to want to embrace. Originality/value – Professor Pfeffer offers a no-holds-barred account of the intersection of modern workplace realities and self-interested leadership.

Abstract:
Pfeffers Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ) is one of the most commonly employed tools in studies on pathological cognitive ageing. Despite the different versions of the questionnaire translated for use in clinical practice and research in Brazil, the FAQ was only formally cross-culturally adapted to the Brazilian context in 2011. However, few studies have analyzed the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the FAQ (B-FAQ). Thus, this study aims to: (1) investigate the use of the FAQ in Brazil, identifying clinical groups in which it has been used, which version of the questionnaire is used in the studies, which psychometric properties were evaluated and which administration methods are used, (2) to analyze the B-FAQ with regard to internal consistency, factorial structure and associations with demographic factors (age, sex and schooling), depressive symptoms, cognitive measures and other measures of functionality. First of all, an integrative review of the literature was performed based on a search of the Lilacs, SCIELO Brazil and PUBMED databases. Forty-five studies were selected to compose the sample. Different versions of the FAQ are used in Brazil and it was not possible to conclude whether the original version is the most employed. These questionnaires are widely used for older adults with cognitive impairment. Eighteen studies on construct validity, 15 on criterion validity and one on reliability were found. No study was found addressing the ecological validity of the FAQ. The most frequent cutoff point used as an indicator of functional disability was 5 points. An interview with the informant was the most frequent form of administering the questionnaire. Considering the diversity of versions of the FAQ in the national context, it is essential that the professional has clarity about the evidence of validity of the version which uses for clinical practice and research. Therefore, the psychometric properties of one of the most used versions, the B-FAQ, were analyzed. One hundred sixty-one older adults were divided into four groups (91 with dementia, 46 with mild cognitive impairment, 11 with psychiatric disorders and 13 healthy controls). All participants were submitted to the Mini Mental Health Examination, Clock Drawing Test, Frontal Assessment Battery, Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (MDRS), Geriatric Depression Scale, B-FAQ and General Activities of Daily Living Scale. The B-FAQ demonstrated very good internal consistency ( = 0.91). Factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure, which, taken together, accounted for 66% of the variance in the findings. The B-FAQ was not correlated with demographic factors, was weakly correlated with depressive symptoms ( = 0.271, p < 0.01, R² = 7%) and strongly correlated with cognitive measures (MDRS: = -0.574, p < 0.01, R² = 33%; MDRS Initiative/Perseveration: = -0.537, p < 0.01, R² = 29%) as well as complex instrumental activities of daily living ( = -0.845, p < 0.01, R² = 71%). Cognitive (MDRS: = -0.234, SE = 0.03, p < 0.001) and behavioral (Geriatric Depression Scale: = 0.426, SE = 0.15, p = 0.007) factors were important predictors of functional performance in the population studied, demonstrating distinct sets of difficulties when the groups were compared to each other. The present findings indicate that the B-FAQ has satisfactory reliability, internal consistency and construct validity. Therefore, this questionnaire can be used in clinical practice and research involving the Brazilian population of older adults.

Abstract:
Background: COVID-19 neurological manifestations were demonstrated during the pandemic, including cognitive impairment. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of cognitive and behavioral complaints (such as dementia, MCI or SCD) in a outpatient sample with recent SARS-COV2 infection. Specific: Evaluate the association of cognitive impairment with the presence of the polymorphism found in the APOE gene and with respiratory disease. Methodology: Observational, longitudinal, prospective clinical study. Inclusion criteria: patients with confirmed Covid-19. Patients are evaluated in an outpatient clinic. They are evaluated through a standardized attendance record, with somatic and cognitive neurological assessment. Cognitive assessment involves the application of cognitive (ACER, MMSE and CDR), functional (Pfeffer) and psychiatric (GDS or Beck) screening instruments, in addition to subsequent extensive neuropsychological assessment. In addition, APOE polymorphism is analysed. Preliminary. Results: To date, 191 patients and 11 controls were evaluated. The average age is 46.5 years, with 65.4% female, 79.16% with 8 or more years of schooling, in addition to 57.5% of the sample with cognitive complaints. Conclusions: The results so far in our study demonstrate that cognitive complaints are frequent in patients even in the chronic phase of the disease.

Abstract:
The construct of mental models has been a useful tool for training and learning. Many instructors ask students to draw how something works or their understanding of the subject. While this gives the instructor useful feedback, comparing their own understanding to the students understanding. There are many variations in understanding that are distinct yet correct. The Structure, Behavior and Function framework (SBF, Hmelo-Silver and Pfeffer, 2004) successfully described how mental models change at different levels of learning. However, measuring mental models can present an analysis challenge. This study outlines another way to apply the SBF framework to quantify a person’s mental model of a common task: posting a message to a social network. Was a person's mental model of this task universal? Did participants understand what happened to their data? Participants in this study were university students from three different regions of the United States who were familiar with social media. Participants described in words, pictures, or a diagram of what happens to a comment after it is entered on a social media site. Results demonstrate the lack of a universal mental model amongst participants which suggests a poverty in how data is shared in social media. The analysis methodology proved useful when confronted with the three data types: words, pictures, or a diagram in a single data set.

Background: Globally, dementia numbers are increasing with a large contribution from low-income regions. Recife is a large city in Northeast Brazil, marked by social disparities and low literacy. Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with dementia in a reference hospital in Recife. Methods: A single-center, descriptive and records-based analysis of patients with Dementia evaluated in a public clinic of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Recife, between 2018-2019. Results: 59 patients were included. The mean age was 69 years old with 62% of women and 6 years of formal education. 46% of all cases were referred for evaluation from close cities. The mean Mini-mental state examination in the first consultation was 15/30 and a mean Pfeffer score of 21/30 (+ 9.8 SD). Hypertension (40%), Diabetes (71%), and Anxiety (85%) were frequent comorbidities. 75% had access to either CT (16/60) or MRI (39/60) and 12 individuals underwent SPECT and/or FDG-PET. Alzheimer’s dementia was diagnosed in 46% of patients and another 45% had criteria for mixed vascular and degenerative conditions. 18% presented with other neurodegenerative syndromes like FTD and Lewy bodies dementia. The mean follow-up time was 19.8 months. Conclusion: Patients referred for evaluation were mostly in moderate to advanced stages of dementia, with a prevalence of mixed-type and non-Alzheimer’s pathologies.
