AbstractLet F be a formally real field. A quadratic form q is called positive if sgnp ≧ 0 for all orderings P of F. A positive q is called decomposable if there exist positive forms q1, q2 such that q = q1⊥q2. Otherwise it is called indecomposable. In a first part we ask for which F there exist indecomposable three dimensional forms over F. We show that such forms exist iff F does not satisfy the property (A) defined in (J. K. Arason, A. Pfister: Zur Théorie der quadratischen Formen über formal reellen Körpern, Math Z. 153, 289-296 (1977)). We use an indecomposable three dimensional form defined by Arason and Pfister to construct indecomposable forms of arbitrary dimension. Then we examine the question for which fields F every positive form over F represents a nonzero sum of squares.

The funeral epigraphic material of Elbląg and the surrounding area, relating to the period preceding the XVIth century, remains, first of all thanks to the researches of Polish epigraphists, relatively more explored and introduced into the scientific circulation array. At the same time the Renaissance-Baroque gravestone monument of the XVIth–XVIIth centuries, which is extremely important for the comprehensive study of the reformed Circum-Baltic, often continues to need a detailed research commentary. To the epitaph of the burgomaster of Elbing (Elbląg) Johann Jungschultz (1583–1630), as well as to the Latin text of the funeral Eulogy, associated with this epitaph, composed by the Bohemian humanist Venceslav Klemens, is expected to address in this article. The epitaph of Johann Jungschultz was established in 1630–1640. From the compositional point of view closest to the epitaph of Johann Jungschultz, and almost prototypical for it, is the epitaph of Edward Blemke (1591), in the St. Mary’s church of Gdansk. It allows to speak about the author of the epitaph of Johann Jungschultz as oriented to samples of the Dutch monumental tombstones of the end of the XVIth century, or even as belonging to the circle of Willem van den Blocke (circa 1550–1628), which was the principal mediator of the influence of the Dutch art in the South-Eastern Baltic in the end of XVIth – the first quarter of the XVIIth century. The compositional and decorative solution of the epitaph also has close matches in the works of Johann Pfister (1573 – circa 1642/1645 or 1648).

RACIONAL: A obesidade é distúrbio de origem multifatorial complexa que congrega aspectos de ordem psicológica, social, biológica e requer abordagem multidisciplinar. É considerada fator de risco para a compulsão alimentar, de modo que a dinâmica emocional do obeso contribuiria para desencadear o ato compulsivo. OBJETIVO: Analisar os indícios de compulsão alimentar em pacientes submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica, antes e dois anos após a operação. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado estudo prospectivo em 50 pacientes submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica pela técnica de Fobi-Capella. Os instrumentos de avaliação psicológica, aplicados antes e após dois anos, foram o teste das Pirâmides Coloridas de Max Pfister e entrevista clínica semi-estruturada. O teste foi aplicado antes e após a operação para identificar indícios de compulsão. A entrevista somente no pós-operatório. RESULTADOS: Citando somente os dados principais, os dados mostraram estabilidade e capacidade para lidar com conflitos em 16% dos pacientes antes da operação e em 10% após. Para a capacidade de controle e adaptação, 36% dos pacientes apresentavam fortes indícios de atitude de controle e rigidez antes da operação e 32% após. Quanto aos indicadores de impulsividade, agressividade e irritabilidade, houve fortes indícios de atitudes agressivas e impulsivas em 28% antes da operação e em 36% após. Quanto ao comportamento beliscador, eram presentes em 94% dos pacientes no pré-operatório e em 60% no pós. Quanto à preferência alimentar, foi a por alimentos calóricos sem menção à bebidas alcoólicas no pré-operatório, e no pós-operatório por alimentos de fácil ingestão. Quanto ao motivo atribuído aos episódios compulsivos, antes da operação 4% dos pacientes relataram estado de nervosismo, 24% afirmaram distúrbios de humor e 52% identificaram sentimentos de impotência ou submissão. No pós, foram 10%, 28% e 38%. Quanto às respostas compensatórias, eram elas ingestão de doces em 12%; ingestão de petiscos em 2% e comer indiscriminadamente tudo que estivesse ao alcance em 64% dos pacientes. Após, 18%, 10% e 22%. CONCLUSÃO: Os pacientes apresentam indícios de compulsão alimentar antes e após a operação. Ela está relacionada a aspectos psicológicos. Os hábitos e preferências alimentares modificam-se após a operação, de modo que os pacientes passam a consumir alimentos de fácil ingestão frente a situações que os faziam comer compulsivamente, não sendo observado trocas de compulsão. O comportamento alimentar inadequado persiste ou é agravado após a operação.

Remotely sensed multispectral data collected from satellites provide a systematic, synoptic ability to assess conditions over large areas on a regular basis. Early use of this satellite data for land cover mapping was based on spectral differences of cover types, with little integration of ancillary data such as soils or topographic information (Iverson et al. 1990). In recent years, concurrent with trends toward integrating remotely sensed and ancillary data for improved classification accuracy (Cibula and Nyquist 1987; Frank 1988), there has been increasing interest in utilizing remotely sensed data for extracting biophysically important variables, relating observed spectral reflectance to leaf area index, biomass, net primary productivity, and vegetation moisture content (Waring et al. 1986; Hobbs and Mooney 1990). The concept of using remotely sensed spectral data to map and monitor the progress of succession within forests and other environments has not been extensively explored. However, the capability to map and predict successional stages of forest habitat types on a landscape to regional scale has important implications for animal habitat management, assessment of insect infestation susceptibility, prediction of fire behavior, and evaluation of plant and animal species diversity. Ecological models based on established successional change rates and trends permit the prediction of future environmental conditions, landscape patterns, and the propagation and effects of disturbances across these landscapes (Hall et al. 1988; Romme 1982). Despain (1990) provides two examples where information on habitat and cover types is important for park management purposes: the cumulative effects model for grizzly bears; and the prediction, assessment, and management of mountain pine beetle outbreaks in conifer forests. Accurate mapping of habitat and cover types can provide information on the distribution and pattern of specific plant communities important to animal species for food, cover, and breeding ground (Knight and Wallace 1989). The ability to map and predict successional stages of forest habitat types has implications for prediction of fire behavior and spread. Previous studies (Despain 1990; Romme and Despain 1989; Romme 1982; Taylor 1969) have noted the relationship between forest age and fire susceptibility. Older stands are comparatively more flammable than younger stands due to fuel accumulations on the ground and in the canopy, and have a higher propensity to propagate and sustain extensive crown fires. Spatial patterns of cover types may also be important, with a highly fragmented landscape mosaic providing natural firebreaks under typical weather conditions. Consequently, as Despain (1990) has noted, the ability to map forest habitat and cover types is of importance for estimation of fire intensity and spread. The use of a single habitat type provides a logical unit for environmental stratification of the study site. Since a habitat type integrates vegetation, climate, topography, and soils (Pfister and Amo 1980), using a single habitat type forces a restriction to selective ranges in climate, topography, and soils types. These constrictions will minimize the effects of abiotic variation on the recorded spectral reflectance, allowing analysis of spectral variation to be concentrated on the changes in biotic factors associated with succession.

Houndstongue (Cynoglossum officinale L.) is a rangeland weed introduced into Canada from Eurasia, and it can be highly toxic to livestock feeding in pastures (3). During 2004, houndstongue plants near Creston, BC, Canada developed water-soaked lesions with white mycelia and black sclerotia on leaves and crowns. Isolations from diseased leaf tissues and sclerotia on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 20°C for 5 to 7 days produced fungal colonies with formation of black sclerotia 5 to 10 mm in diameter. A single hyphal tip isolate from houndstongue. Ss-HT-C. was compared with a sunflower isolate of S. sclerotiorum, sun-87 (1), for morphology and pathogenicity. For apothecial production, Ss-HT-C and sun-87 were grown on PDA in petri dishes at 10°C for 10 weeks, and sclerotia produced were harvested, placed on moist vermiculite in petri dishes, and incubated at 20°C under light for 3 weeks. Mature apothecia were excised, stained with acid fuchsin, mounted on slides, and examined for asci and ascospores with a microscope. There were no morphological differences between Ss-HT-C and sun-87, each producing an ascus with eight binucleate, elliptical ascospores, measuring 4 × 10 μm (width × length), supporting the identity of Ss-HT-C as S. sclerotiorum (2,4). For pathogenicity tests of Ss-HT-C and sun-87, mycelial plugs (8 mm in diameter) were removed from the margin of colonies grown on PDA for 5 days at 20°C, and placed on leaves of C. officinale plants that were grown in a greenhouse (20 ± 4°C) to the rosette stage. Inoculated plants were covered with clear plastic bags, kept in the same greenhouse for 3 days, and the diameters of the leaf lesions developed at inoculation sites were measured. The experiment was run twice with 30 plants per isolate and five leaves per plant. Uninoculated plants covered with plastic bags were used as controls. Experiments used a completely randomized design. Results of leaf inoculations showed that Ss-HT-C and sun-87 were pathogenic to hound-stongue. There was no statistical difference between isolates or trials. The frequency of leaves with lesions was 90% for Ss-HT-C and 93% for sun-87. The mean leaf lesion diameters were 32 and 35 mm for Ss-HT-C and sun-87, respectively. Leaves of control plants remained healthy. S. sclerotiorum was reisolated from leaves with lesions, but not from controls. After 14 to 21 days, new sclerotia, 5 to 10 mm in diameter, were formed on leaves of inoculated plants. The plants eventually died. This study confirms that S. sclerotiorum is the causal agent for the disease of hound-stongue in Canada, and to our knowledge, this is the first world record of infection of this weed by S. sclerotiorum. It can scarcely be said that François Mitterrand lacked reasons for despondency between September 1994 and May 1995: the oppression of imminent retirement, the ravages of illness, the loss of his dearest friends; the tide of scandals mounting towards the presidency; the disastrous Socialist performance in both the legislative elections of 1993 and the European elections of 1994; the political, intellectual and emotional collapse of the brand of left-wing magnanimity which he had made his own and which had borne him to power; the ingratitude of public opinion, anxious for change. Most of the books devoted to the last months of his ‘reign’ fail to go beyond a fairly mechanical rendering of a feeling of anti-climax. Something of an exception is L'Année des adieux (‘Year of Farewells’),1 a bitter-sweet chronicle of life in the President's entourage by Laura Adler, an adviser to the Elysée; but her comradely offering does little to stem the tide of hostile, regretful or frankly accusatory offerings. It is no coincidence that Jean Montaldo's Mitterrand et les 40 voleurs (‘Mitterrand and the Forty Thieves’),2 has become a long-term best-seller: Montaldo, a former police officer, mercilessly exposes the nexus of scandal and intrigue in the presidential entourage. Or that Thierry Pfister's novel Le Nègre (‘The Negro)3 uses a thinly disguised cast of characters to make a violent attack on the betrayal of socialist ideas, with a bitterness felt also in Daniel Rondeau's Mitterrand et nous (‘Mitterrand and Ourselves’),4 referring to the post-1968 generation which the author claims to represent. Or, again, that it should be the President's most consistently vitriolic radio critic, Philippe Alexandre, who in a tardy attack of pseudo-remorse has undertaken a Plaidoyer impossible pour un vieux président abandonné par les siens (‘Speech in defence of the indefensible, on behalf of an ageing president deserted by his followers’).5 All in all, a display of authorial individuality and ardour, as writers scramble to accomplish the finally rather banal task of presenting the departing President with History's bill for board and lodging.

Ce travail s'inscrit dans le cadre de la théorie des formes quadratiques et des algèbres simples centrales à involution sur un corps de caractéristique différente de 2, noté F dans la suite. Dans le premier chapitre, on exhibe un critère simple pour qu'un anti-automorphisme d'une F-algèbre simple centrale soit une involution. Ce critère permet de retrouver à la fois le critère d'existence d'Albert et le théorème de prolongement de Kneser pour les involutions de première espèce. On présente également des preuves nouvelles et élémentaires de deux résultats connus concernant les algèbres simples centrales de degré 2 et d'exposant 4. D'après la définition donnée par I. Kaplansky, le radical de F noté R(F) est le groupe des éléments de F qui sont représentés par toute 1-forme de Pfister. Le chapitre II vise à approfondir l'étude de cette notion. On s'intéresse en particulier au rôle que joue le radical de F vis-à-vis des formes quadratiques et des algèbres simples centrales sur F ainsi qu'à la position de R(F) par rapport aux inclusions naturelles F× [. . . ]. Afin d'obtenir des corps de niveau donné avec des propriétés supplémentaires, on introduit au chapitre V la notion de forme suprême. Une forme quadratique sur F est dite suprême si elle est anisotrope et si elle contient toute autre forme quadratique anisotrope sur F comme sous-forme. Il s'avère qu'une forme suprême est nécessairement une forme de Pfister. D'un autre côté, toute forme de Pfister anisotrope sur le corps F devient une forme supême après extensions des scalaires à un sur-corps convenable de F.

This chapter proves that Bruhat-Tits buildings exist. It begins with a few definitions and simple observations about quadratic forms, including a 1-fold Pfister form, followed by a discussion of the existence part of the Structure Theorem for complete discretely valued fields due to H. Hasse and F. K. Schmidt. It then considers the generic unramified cases; the generic semi-ramified cases, the generic ramified cases, the wild unramified cases, the wild semi-ramified cases, and the wild ramified cases. These cases range from a unique unramified quadratic space to an unramified separable quadratic extension, a tamely ramified division algebra, a ramified separable quadratic extension, and a unique unramified quaternion division algebra. The chapter also describes ramified quaternion division algebras D₁, D₂, and D₃ over K containing a common subfield E such that E/K is a ramified separable extension.
