Abstract Introduction Persistence of patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been associated with cryptogenic stroke due to a paradoxical systemic embolism. In these cases, a percutaneous closure allows to decrease the risk of redo cerebral ischemic events. However, the presence of a complex anatomy might prevent a correct device–deployment with a high–risk o residual shunt and/or device embolization. We describe our experience about alternative technique after a failed device closure attempt. Methods We reviewed six cases wherein the device was not able to close effectively the PFO. Background Percutaneous closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) or the left atrial appendage (LAA) are controversial procedures to prevent stroke but often used in clinical practice. We assessed the regional variation of these interventions and explored potential determinants of such a variation. We derived hospital service areas (HSAs) using patient flows for PFO and LAA closure. We calculated age-standardized mean procedure rates and variation indices (extremal quotient [EQ]

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is post-natal persistence of interatrial communication and have shown to have association with various clinical manifestations including transient ischemic attack and strokes. The diagnosis of PFO requires transthoracic and transesophageal Echocardiogram. Closure of PFO with percutaneous device closure can prevent recurrence of strokes in selected patients with cryptogenic stroke and it has been included in recent guidelines also. In this mini review, we will discuss couple of cases of PFO closures followed by discussion upon recent guidelines on the same.

Our findings show that while many state capacity-related indicators improve during UN PKO deployment, UN PKO withdrawal can have both negative and positive correlations for state-building outcomes; depending on the indicator, the time period, and the country under scrutiny. Abstract:
The increasing pressure of ecological disruption on people and on security means that ideas and policy on peace and security must increasingly address the need for ecological security. This paper poses five research questions concerning: (a) amplification of anti-microbial resistance (patho-gens that are increasingly drug-resistant); (b) the physiological consequences of pollution; (c) the loss of nature’s con-tribution to people’s well-being; (d) local and regional eco-logical tipping points; and (e) detri-mental organisms and pro-cesses that thrive in the rapidly changing planet. Abstract:
This work builds on the original semi-automated land cover mapping algorithm and quantifies improvements to class accuracy, analyzes the results, and conducts a more in-depth accuracy assessment in conjunction with test sites and the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). This algorithm uses support vector machines trained on data collected across the continental United States to generate a pre-trained model for inclusion into a decision support tool within ArcGIS Pro. Version 2 includes an additional snow cover class and accounts for snow cover effects within the other land cover classes. Overa

During research cruise AL595 (31.5. - 20.6.2023) onboard research vessel ALKOR, investigations were carried out at the Grimsey Hydrothermal Field offshore Northern Iceland as part of the Helmholtz InnoPool project “High CO2 – metabolic responses and bioeconomic opportunities”. For the first time, the Hover-AUVs Anton and Luise were successfully operated at water depths of up to 400m, which is close to the maximum operational depth of 500m specified for these Girona 500 AUVs. AUV Anton was used to measure high resolution multibeam data with a horizontal resolution of approximately 40cm cov- eri
