Abstract:
The Phaon crescent butterfly, Phyciodes phaon (Edwards), can be reared by placing newly-eclosed larvae on a pinto bean-based artificial diet; however, the adults fail to reproduce. Addition of 10% (w/w) of freeze-dried leaves of the host plant, Phyla nodiflora (L.) Greene, to the artificial diet approximately doubled the number of adults produced, and females oviposited viable eggs. Addition of wheat germ oil, linseed oil, or olive oil to the artificial diet without host plant tissue also increased survival to the adult stage, but adult females failed to oviposit. Larvae and adults reared from the artificial diet with addition of any one of the oils contained a higher quantity of linolenic acid in their body lipids than those reared on the artificial diet without additional oil. Leaves of the larval host plant are especially rich in the polyunsaturated fatty acids, linoleic acid and linolenic acid; whereas, the pinto bean diet is relatively low in these fatty acids, especially linolenic acid. Addition of synthetic β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and campesterol, the sterols identified in the host plant leaves, to the artificial diet improved neither larval nor adult survival, and adult females did not oviposit. The factor (or factors) present in host plant leaves and acquired during larval feeding that enables reproduction of adults remains to be identified.

Abstract:
Catullus' cunning dinner invitation to Fabullus continues to generate a rich variety of interpretations of its memorable central image, the promised gift of a certain unguentum Veneris (13.12). Three Latomus articles, by Littman, Hallett, and Case, have explored possible origins of and uses for that mysterious substance, suggesting, for example, that it might even contain female secretions with powerful aphrodisiac properties, or some other unmentionable sexual lubricant.

Abstract:
Heroides 15, Sappho's letter to Phaon, is an enigma in its present context for many different reasons. What is Sappho doing, heterosexualised, at the end of a string of elegiac epistles written by women plucked straight from myth and each given their fifteen minutes of fame? Despite the mythology that grew up around her, of which Phaon was a part, Sappho was a real woman and a real writer, the Greek love poet par excellence; not only that, she was and is a figure who, in her poetic persona at least, is famous for communicating her love for women, not for the local ferryman. This Sappho looks very written, yet as the only heroine–writer, and as the love-poet often cited as Ovid's influential predecessor, she can represent the culmination and reification of the Heroides' illusion of female authorship. In doing so, Sappho functions as the crucial figure in a collection of poems in which the Ovidian author writes in disguise; in what becomes finally a life or death situation, her poem radically questions the definition and definability of authorship, gender and identity. We are constantly asked, and are prompted to ask: Just how authentic, or how written is Sappho in this self-conscious erotic alignment of His ‘n’ Hers, Roman and Greek love poets? What is it for an Ovidian author conspicuously to write, through and over, the poetess whose work he recommends should be read alongside his own, and whose influence on his own writing and love-affairs he hints at on several occasions?

Abstract:
In this article, I propose a new reading of Michael Field’s Long Ago (1889) focused on explaining how this volume of verse appropriates the figure of Sappho, rewrites her failed romance with Phaon, and amplifies her archetypal image of tragic lover through a mythopoetic narrative that refashions different classical myths of desire, despair and death. I present all these myths jointly, discuss their assonances with the Sapphic archetype, and reveal how they constitute a coherent and elaborate mythography that portrays Sappho as a tragic heroine who, through the power of myth, embodies a universal paradigm of human affectivity.

Hussaini, Muzhgan. "Luminous Land of Phon." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/91402.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis, Luminous Land of Phon, explores how architectural spaces, even interior spaces, interact with nature along different dimensions. Light and sound are the two very powerful elements of nature and are the focus of this study. Louis Kahn once said: "The sun does not realize how wonderful it is until after a room is made." (Source: https://www.quotetab.com/quotes/by-louis-kahn#GdaYdAIrZ8tmvcyh.97) The question of nature is explored in an urban environment to challenge the tired dualistic division between the human and the natural world. This project transforms the way we think about the urban so that architecture and nature can have great harmony and elevate each other instead of canceling each other. The project is a school of architecture and landscape architecture that promotes fine spaces with desirable qualities of light and sound for the design professionals of the future. The project is sited in the University of the District of Columbia as an expansion of their existing campus and programs.
Master of Architecture
The architecture is a school of Architecture and Landscape architecture consisting of a full scale natural water pool underneath the building, Gallery and shop space under the pool, studio spaces, class rooms, faculty offices, cafeteria, and ceremony halls for the University of the District of Columbia at its Van Ness Campus sited at the Connecticut Ave, NW Washington D.C. The thesis is an exploration of the concept of bringing nature into architecture and a formal study of their harmony with each other, Architecture, structure and construction of the building.

Wu, Jesse 1972. "Towards a poly-phon-ic environment." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/70865.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1998.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 96-99).
This thesis explores an architectural/landscape environment where polyphonic metaphors are the means for exploration and investigation. Polyphonic, as described in musical definitions/ terms, is the style of composition in which two or more distinctly independent but organically related parts sound against one another. This combination produces associations within the piece that relate to various time lengths and musical instruments when particular musical motives, specifically melodic lines, play against one another. An interdependent relationship between the lines, a vertical association, is referred as harmony, while an interdependent relationship within the lines, a horizontal relationship, is referred as melody. The significance of this metaphorical association with architectural form is the opportunity to create an architectural vocabulary that is exemplified by its richness and diversity of spatial, material, and subconsciousness qualities that moves beyond music's time sequential nature. It is an attempt to provide an environment that exhibits polyphonic qualities in a space-time sequence. Inherent to achieve these qualities, several issues must be considered. This includes; territorial definition and exchange (privacies vs. public), materiality decisions, physical reciprocity, lighting intentions ... etc. The vehicle for these studies will be a chamber music facility programmed for both practice and performance. It is a place where chamber groups or individual performers have decisions to select a place appropriate for their "style" of performance beyond the traditional enclosed concert hall.

Abstract:
Secondary flows of Phan-Thien-Tanner fluids in channels formed by two intersecting walls, and driven by a pressure gradient parallel to the intersection line, are studied by means of perturbation analysis, where the perturbing parameter is the relaxation time. The velocity field is analysed in relation to the opening angle and distance from the corner within the fluid region. An analytically exact solution is found at 0(λ3), through the mathematical structure of which is possible to draw some general and important conclusions about the dynamics of the transversal flow. Such results are of potential interest in the design of devices aimed at exploiting the transport capacity of secondary flows.
