Abstract:
This thesis evaluates different technologies for treating wastewater with high concentrations of PPCPs. Firstly, a state-of-art revision of advanced treatment technology for removing Triclosan (TCS) from waste water was carried out in an attempt to evaluate the most favourable technologies and discern any major limiting factors. The technological categories evaluated were: (i) adsorption, (ii) advanced oxidation processes, and (iii) membrane technology. The results found in the second chapter are based on treating three PPCP compounds in a cyclic anoxic/aerobic membrane bioreactor. In fact,

The Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) is the principal source of information used to assess and regulate the potential hazard and risk for a chemical that has the potential to bioaccumulate in the marine environment, according to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The main objective of this thesis was to estimate the BCFs of two different emerging contaminants in Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila clam) under controlled laboratory conditions: the UV filter 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC) commonly used in skincare products, and the artificial sweetener Acesulfame potassium (ACE-K) use

Graft copolymers constitute an important class of copolymers since it is possible to tune their characteristics opportunely designing their macromolecular structure. There is a growing interest for the design and synthesis of graft copolymers with desired composition and functionality to be used in a wide range of applications. Free radical polymerization techniques offer the straightforward synthesis of amphiphilic graft copolymers materials thanks also to the vast choice of available monomers with different functional groups. Abstract:
Microbicides are used in consumer products worldwide to enhance their antibacterial potency in disinfection, for antisepsis or as preservatives. With the widespread use of these compounds, concerns have been expressed about their potential to select for reduced susceptibility. Whilst in vitro studies have reported the laboratory generation of bacterial insusceptibility for certain combinations of bacterium and microbicide, true microbicide resistance, which is defined as a change in susceptibility that is likely to affect the outcome of treatment, has not been frequently reported or observed i
