Abstract:
Modern crystallographic methods originate from the synergy of two main research streams, the small-molecule and the macro-molecular streams. The first stream was able to definitively solve the phase problem for molecules up to 200 atoms in the asymmetric unit. The achievements obtained by the macromolecular stream are also impressive. A huge number of protein structures have been deposited in the Protein Data Bank. The solution of them is no longer reserved to an elite group of scientists, but may be attained in a large number of laboratories around the world, even by young scientists. New probabilistic approaches have been tailored to deal with larger structures, errors in the experimental data, and modest data resolution. Traditional phasing techniques like ab initio, molecular replacement, isomorphous replacement, and anomalous dispersion techniques have been revisited. The new approaches have been implemented in robust phasing programs, which have been organized in automatic pipelines usable even by non-experts. Protein structures, which 50 years ago could take months or even years to solve, can now be solved in a matter of hours, partly also due to technological advances in computer science. This book describes all modern crystallographic phasing methods, and introduces a new rational classification of them. A didactic approach is used, with the techniques described simply and logically in the main text, and further mathematical details confined to the Appendices for motivated readers. Numerous figures and applicative details illustrate the text.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses German nuclear energy policy in the entire post-war period. The use of nuclear energy gradually declined after a peak in the 1990s. Three major policy reversals occurred: first, the phasing-out phase by the SPD-Green government from 2002, second, a partial annulment of those measures by the CDU/CSU-FDP government in 2010, and, third, a new phasing-out phase after the Fukushima catastrophe in 2011. The chapter argues that the features of the German electoral system in combination with the decentralized federal system allowed a Green Party to cross the thresholds of parliamentary representation and relevance (executive participation) and to become the ‘owner’ of the nuclear energy issue. This issue ownership was essential for maintaining a high level of attention to nuclear energy and made possible the policy reversals.

The chapter talks about the dangers and opportunities in Haq’s mind about the new world order brings, especially in the context of the future of the North-South dialogue. For Haq, embracing global human security would entail phasing out the Cold War in the Third World, investing in people, creating new alliances for peace, strengthening the economic and social role of the UN in assisting conflict ridden countries, and increasing transparency of military expenditures.

Abstract:
Sweden started its nuclear programme in the early 1950s. Initially it was generally welcomed as modernization and even supported by environmentalists. The issue became more contested in the 1970s, when protests began and the Centre Party turned anti-nuclear. In the 1980s, the phasing out of nuclear energy until 2010 was decided as a consequence of a referendum. In 2010, however, the parliament decided to allow building a new generation of nuclear power plants. After the Fukushima disaster a new phase of nuclear energy confinement began in 2014 as a consequence of a Red-Green coalition coming to power. Over the years most Swedish parties have reversed their positions on the nuclear power issue. Policy reversals were triggered by party competition and government replacement and reflected changes in public opinion as well as coalition politics.

Abstract:
The growing recognition that fossil-fuel subsidies are economically inefficient and harmful for the environment has led to widespread calls for—and efforts to bring about- the phasing out of fossil-fuel subsidies over the last few years. Despite these efforts, however, fossil-fuel subsidies remain prevalent around the world. The existing international legal framework is too weak and fragmented to support fossil-fuel subsidy reform efforts and an international agreement is essential. This chapter explores, from a sustainable energy transition perspective, the challenges and prospects of and avenues for negotiating a binding multilateral agreement on fossil-fuel subsidies. The chapter posits that the Friends of Fossil-Fuel Subsidy Reform are in a position to take the lead and that the ball is in the court of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Rizzo, Matteo. The New Face of Neoliberalism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198794240.003.0007.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on DART, a Bus Rapid Transit project (BRT): the new face of public transport in Dar es Salaam since operations started in 2016. A PPP funded by the World Bank, DART aimed to transform public transport through large-scale infrastructural work and the introduction of new buses, phasing out daladala from the city’s main public transport routes. The chapter challenges the presentation of BRT as the ‘win–win’ solution to tackling the crisis of public transport in developing countries. A contextualized political economy of DART highlights why the project proceeded so slowly (implementation began in 2002), documenting the capacity of some Tanzanian actors to resist. Tensions over the displacement of existing paratransit operators by foreign investors, the inclusion of the existing public transport workforce, employment destruction, affordability of the new service, and their management by the government are a window into ‘actually existing neoliberalism’ and post-socialism in Tanzania.

Tampi, Rajesh, Kristina Zdanys, and Mark Oldham, eds. Psychiatry Board Review. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190265557.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of psychiatry is rapidly evolving, specifically in the areas of psychopharmacology, psychotherapeutic strategies, and the classification of many major psychiatric disorders with the implementation of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: DSM-5 in 2013. A new board review textbook is imperative to address these changes in order to prepare board-eligible psychiatrists for the certification examination as well as for clinical practice in general. Additionally, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is in the process of phasing in the DSM-5 criteria to the board examination, such that by 2017 the examination material will exclusively reflect the new manual. The book is aimed primarily at board-eligible psychiatrists preparing for their Initial certification in psychiatry. It will be a useful study tool for psychiatrists renewing certification as well, which in the United States is required every ten years. Furthermore the text will also be a useful reference for all psychiatrists in clinical practice to familiarize themselves with the new diagnostic classifications of DSM-5, the latest psychopharmacologic treatment strategies, and psychotherapeutic techniques.

Abstract:
Adrian Rollini (1904-1956)was as a child prodigy, playing piano when he was four. This book describes how job opportunities came to him easily at first and that his versatility helped him when they became rare.At the age of 16 he became a professional musician and, in New York, recorded piano rolls. In 1922, at the start of the jazz age, he joined the California Ramblers. He moved to the bass saxophone and gave it its definite place in early jazz. He had no serious competition and was highly appreciated by his colleagues. His style became the instrument's standard and his new sound was one reason why the band became a success. At the top of his fame Rollini became leader of his own band, with a.o. Bix Beiderbecke, Frank Trumbauer, Eddie Lang, and Joe Venuti. It was star-studded but short-lived. In late 1927, he moved to London to join Fred Eizalde's progressive dance band. A year later he became the band's practical leader. Back in the USA in 1930, Rollini joined Bert Lown's hotel band, but the bass saxophone was phasing out, so he moved to the vibraphone. Bands such as Lown's and, later, Richard Himber's did not satisfy him, and he decided to start a club, Adrian's Tap Room, as well as an instrument shop. He was one of the first to go for a jazz trio, consisting of himself,a guitarist, and a bass player. During the 40s, Rollini added another venture, a fishing lodge in Florida.

Abstract:
As with its previous editions, the 20th edition of this yearbook has been conceived as a wide-ranging compendium that provides its readers with an up-to-date overview of different aspects of federal and regional structures and politics. The 30 contributions it contains can be grouped according to the following main topics: Nine contributions (including one by the chief minister of Baden-Württemburg, Winfried Kretschmann) address the book’s principal subject: 70 years of federalism in Germany. Four of them deal with current areas of research into federalism (including federal reform in Switzerland). Four of them examine issues related to German federalism (including the phasing out of fossil fuels and the promotion of digitalisation in schools). There are eight reports on European countries (including Italy, Austria and the UK). There is one report on a non-European country (Pakistan). Two of the contributions examine regional and municipal cooperation in Europe (including cooperation between communities on different sides of a national border). Two of them address the European Union/European integration (including the European Committee of the Regions). With contributions by Winfried Kretschmann, Rudolf Hrbek, Ursula Münch, Arthur Benz, Albert Funk, Wolfgang Renzsch, Klaus Detterbeck, Thomas Petersen, Martin Große Hüttmann, Patrick Finke, Markus M.
