Abstract:
PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO<br>COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR<br>PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTS. This research verifies the connections between constructive arts and industries after the 1950 s. Particularly, the work aims to inquire the productions and the academic trajectories of two important members of the Brazilian Constructive Vanguard – Décio Pignatari and Lygia Pape. Both of them were artists, designers and professors. In their view, the modern artist should contribute to industrial society in many different ways, because all creative activities were related. As college members, they began teaching semiotics. Lately, Pignatari dedicated his career to literature and communication theories and Pape became interested in visual linguistics education. It is worthwhile to mention that they were educators in graduation and post-graduation courses. Their academic papers discuss the art crisis in the age of mechanical reproduction, proposing ways to overcome this challenge. However, these texts were rarely mentioned as a part of Brazilian Constructive Project. Therefore, this investigation analyses Décio Pignatari s PHD Thesis called Semiótica e Literatura (USP-1973), and Lygia Pape s Masters Dissertation untitled Catiti-Catiti, na terra dos brasis (UFRJ-1980). Initially, their arguments lead to the questioning of the beauty concept as a central aesthetic category. In this sense, C. S. Peirce s semiotics impacts Pignatari s thoughts, and M. Merleau-Ponty s phenomenology marcs Pape s ideals. Lately, this work examines their claims for artistic invention, revealing two different perspectives on this concept. Books written by W. Benjamin, M.Bense and M. Pedrosa integrate their theoretical frameworks.

Abstract:
A public oral defense of the written dissertation is mandatory for completion of the doctorate in most North American universities, yet how students experience it has rarely been documented. This study examined how a group of Canadian education PhD candidates experienced and made sense of their dissertation defenses. Employing an identity lens, it focused on how these students viewed themselves, performed, and were viewed by others as researchers before, during and after the defense. The perspective on identity was principally drawn from the communities of practice (COP) theory. Accordingly, doctoral candidates' researcher identities were defined by memberships (being members in the community of researchers in certain fields/areas of research), meanings (making sense of defense experiences) and trajectories (ways in which the defense connects doctoral candidates' past, present, and future). The participants were 11 PhD candidates (six women and five men) from three departments in a faculty of education at a Canadian research-intensive university. Each of them was interviewed before the defense about his/her preparation experience and after the defense about his/her defense experience. Through observation, questions from the 11 defense committees and the candidates' answers were recorded. Data also included the participants' background information and institutional documents regarding the conduct of the PhD dissertation defense. Over 20 other defenses were observed to understand the Faculty practices associated with the defense. Case-specific findings pointed to how doctoral candidates performed as researchers during the defense by balancing knowing and not-knowing in answering defense committees' questions. The candidates navigated across research areas, methodological and epistemological borders, and drew on various sources of knowledge to demonstrate knowing; and they evaluated the significance and relevance of questions and provided provisional and hedged answers to negotiate not-knowing. Cross-case findings indicated that the defense confirmed most candidates' researcher identities and played a role in weaving together their past, present and future in terms of their researcher identity development.

Jones, Cheryl Mary. "Electrical conductance and gating of porin channels in lipid bilayers." Thesis, Bangor University, 1994. https://research.bangor.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/electrical-conductance-and-gating-of-porin-channels-in-lipid-bilayers(0756e4c9-1d47-4b11-88c7-6f52ed52dde6).html.

Full text
Abstract:
The trimeric protein known as porin, found in the outer membrane of Escherichia coli, forms ion channels which have been reported to be voltage-gated. The aim of this investigation is to increase the understanding of the function of such channels, particularly with respect to voltage-gating. To achieve this, porin was first extracted from whole cells of E. coli and then it was incorporated into lipid bilayers, made using the Montal-Mueller method, for subsequent investigation. The extraction of porin from E. coli exploited both its tight association with peptidoglycan and its high level of detergent resistance. Porin was extracted from two strains of E. coli, 0111 :B4 and K12 (a rough mutant), with the resulting samples being rich in OmpF and Ompe porins respectively. Measurement of ion flow through the porin channels was made with different transmembrane voltages and with a variety of salts and salt concentrations. Such measurements enabled the selectivity of the channels to specific ions to be determined and estimates of pore diameter to be made. Instantaneous IN characteristics were asymmetrical and non-linear for both porins and were influenced by the salt concentration, pH of the electrolyte and the number of channels in the bilayer. Based on electrostatic models of gramicidin-like channels, coupled with the available structural information on porin, it was concluded that the porinlLPS complex inserts unidirectionally into the bilayer and has a net negative charge at the LPS end. The influence of the number of channels in the bilayer on the IN characteristic, most marked for the 0111 :B4 porin, was interpreted as being due to 'clusters' of channels in close association an idea supported by the results of voltage-gating experiments. Voltage-gating in single channels was shown to occur in three well defined steps, consistent with the known trimeric structure of porin. Multi-channel membranes showed several different types of current relaxation in response to a sustained voltage application. The most common type was composed of two exponential decays, suggesting the presence of two populations of closing channels. The results from voltage-gating experiments were compared with the theoretical behaviour of a simple two-state channel. This model was also extended to include entropy changes and it was concluded that porin followed the general behaviour predicted by a simple twostate model.

Nelson, Brandy R. "Stressors and Time-to-Degree for Online Social Sciences Doctoral Programs." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5758.

Abstract:
U.S. doctoral program completion rates have remained persistently low in the humanities and biomedical sciences despite educators' efforts. A variety of factors, including stress and dissitation advisor-related issues, were associated with high attrition rates and extended time-to-degree for PhD candidates. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine relationships among life stressors, advisor-related factors, and time-to-degree for a convenience sample of 74 online social sciences doctoral degree holders. Holmes and Rahe's work on stress and Tinto's framework for education program attrition provided the framework for the study. Linear regression and Pearson's correlation statistics were used to examine the relationships between Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) scores, Advisor-Related Factor scores, and time-to-degree after controlling for covariates of age, ethnicity, and gender. Key findings included: a) SRRS significantly (p < .01) predicted time-to-degree after controlling for age, ethnicity, and gender; and b) no significant relationship was found between advisor-related factors. By identifying at-risk students, early intervention could reduce the time need to complete a PhD program and reduce financial and university resources required to finish. Doctoral program administrators could provide closer supervision with PhD candidates and make adjustments based on an accumulation of extraordinary stressors to help PhD candidiates adjust and finish their programs.

Иванченко, Андреянна Алексеевна, Andreyanna Ivanchenko та Андреянна Олексіївна Іванченко. "Phenomena of interference and transfer in the processes of long-term verbal memory (PhD dissertation) [Явления интерференции и переноса в процессах долговременной вербальной памяти (канд. дисс.)] (in Russian)". Thesis, Киев, 1985. http://dspace.univer.kharkov.ua/handle/123456789/11769.

Full text
Abstract:
An analysis of the mechanisms of interference and transfer as important mnemonic effects was carried out in the framework of a systematic approach to the study of memory. The language being studied was considered as a reality, having a system structure and consisting of different hierarchically interconnected language levels. A provision has been developed on the importance of specially formed methods of orientation to relevant signs of the studied verbal units in order to reduce interference and enhance transfer. Interference and transfer, forming close unity with each other, are manifested at all functional levels of memory. Reducing the interference effect and enhancing the transfer can be achieved through the development of semantic differentiation in foreign students while they learn the Russian language. Differentiation helps to build in memory an adequate program of the upcoming exteriorized speech-motor action. This method is universal and can be used in teaching any other foreign language, based on the effectiveness of the unity of motor-moving, visual, auditory and articulatory types of memory.

Abstract:
Many applicants for academic degrees are sure that their main task is to write a good dissertation. In fact, it is necessary to solve not one, but at least two tasks: first, of course, to prepare the work, and secondly, to successfully protect it. But this is not so much a scientific as a managerial problem that requires its own ways and methods of solution. The methods of its solution are discussed in the proposed work.&#x0D; The book is aimed primarily at applicants defending PhD theses, but it may also be of interest to those who are preparing for the defense of doctoral theses or are interested in the organization of scientific activities.

Abstract:
Recently, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) have attracted increased public discussion. While large nuclear power plant new build projects are facing challenges, the focus of attention is turning to small modular reactors. This paper is based on the PhD Dissertation “Licensing Model Development for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) - Focusing on Finnsh Regulatory Framework”, approved in 2013. The result of the study is a recommendation for a new, optimized licensing process for SMRs. The most important SMR-specific feature, in terms of licensing, is the modularity of the design. Here the modularity indicates multi-module SMR designs, which creates new challenges in the licensing process. The application of the new licensing process is developed using Systems Engineering, Requirements Management, and Project Management practices and tools.

Advanced data analytic approaches make it possible to extract knowledge from such data sets and thus increase the risk that competitive knowledge unintentionally spills over. From a knowledge management perspective, little attention is paid to such knowledge risks arising from data-centric collaborations. Hence, this proposed PhD project aims at investigating this, by using the overall method of Design Science Research. The project focuses on digital SC, as data-centric collaborations play a central role within them. To contribute to knowledge research, a framework is being sought. The elaborated framework should allow an assessment of knowledge risks and support the selection of suitable measures and it should contribute on how to support the management of knowledge risks in digital SC.

Abstract:
One of the first nuclear engineering programs in the United States was established at Virginia Tech in the mid-1950’s and continued until the mid-1980’s when it was abandoned due to a drop both in student interest and government support. In 2006, as a result of interest shown by the nuclear industry in Virginia, discussions were undertaken that led to the approval to offer Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in nuclear engineering in 2013. In parallel with these efforts, we began teaching undergraduate courses in anticipation of offering a minor in nuclear engineering to all Virginia Tech engineering and science students. Currently we have 140 undergraduate students taking nuclear engineering classes, nuclear engineering undergraduate research hours, and participating in nuclear-engineering-related senior design activities. Our program has been conceived and designed with the objective of providing the nuclear engineering workforce required to address the most important nuclear-related issues of our time including: enhancing the safe and productive use of nuclear energy; contributing to the development of advanced technologies for national and international nuclear security and safeguards; developing advanced medical devices for nuclear diagnostics and therapy; and the establishment of effective policies for the utilization of nuclear energy and its regulation. The Master’s degree program involves 7 courses and the equivalent of two semesters of thesis research for a total of 30 credit hours. The PhD program, which builds on the Master’s degree program, requires 5 additional courses, and the equivalent of 4 semesters of dissertation research for a total of 60 credit hours beyond the Master’s degree. The curriculum is supported by a rigorous, benchmarked assessment and evaluation process to assure that the goals of the program are attained. Currently five faculty members support the nuclear engineering program, and typical total enrollment in our graduate programs runs between 35 and 50 students. When we reach full strength, with the addition of two more nuclear engineering faculty members, we expect to be graduating 12 Master’s students and 7 PhD students per year.

Abstract:
We conducted two studies to investigate why academics accept to award a prestigious title for unsatisfactory Ph.D. dissertations. Through semi-structured interviews with 19 academics, the first study showed that convenience theses could either be planned as such from the beginning of the doctoral work or become so as the doctorate develops. In the second, scenario-based study (N = 89 academics), we found that the acceptability of obtaining a title of convenience depends on the career envisaged by the doctoral student and the specific shortcomings of the dissertation. On the one hand, the present research allows to discuss how the academics’ ethics of responsibility can supplant their ethics of conviction. On the other hand, it raises the question of the referential, which is not shared and allows for flexibility in requirements for delivering the Ph.D.

Abstract:
Problem of globalization of the educational process and integration into the international educational space is one of the most urgent problems for the Kazakh universities. In this regard, generalization of experience in training of PhD students is of particular interest, since training of PhD students is different in different countries. The example of the organization of educational process and scientific research in the PhD studies of chemical specialties at Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology Al-Farabi Kazakh National University shows the peculiarities of the organization and defense of dissertations in Kazakhstan universities. It is shown that the training of specialists - doctoral students at Kazakhstan universities is carried out on the basis of theoretical and practical tests. At the same time currently the state of theoretical training and practical research is 1:1,5 however there is a tendency of decrease of the theoretical training. Conditions for preparation and defense of PhD-dissertations are described. The main requirements for the defense are marked: fulfillment of theoretical training and practical research in amount of 75 credits, the publication of results in journals with non-zero impact factor and approbation of the results in international scientific conferences.
