Abstract:
Richard Schelp completed his PhD in lattice theory in 1970 at Kansas State University. However, he did not take a traditional route to a PhD in mathematics and an outstanding career as a professor and a mathematical researcher. He grew up in rural northeast Missouri. He received his BS in mathematics and physics from the University of Central Missouri. After the completion of his master's degree in mathematics from Kansas State University, he assumed a position as an associate mathematician in the Applied Science Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University for five years. To start his PhD programme at Kansas State University, he had to quit a well-paying position. Also, he was already married to his wife Billie (Swopes) Schelp and he had a family – a daughter Lisa and a son Rick. This was a courageous step to take, but it says something about who Dick Schelp was.

This article presents an analysis of the mathematics course requirements and recommendations for prospective students seeking entry into economics PhD programs in the United States. We find that applicants must complete seven mathematics courses to safely assume that they have enough math credits for admission to most programs. Using National Research Council (NRC) rankings of economics departments according to the level of research activity, we find no strong evidence that the mathematics courses required and recommended are dependent upon the level of academic research conducted by the faculty in the respective PhD programs. Abstract:
The paper presents some interesting aspects related to the biography and works of Romanian mathematician Caius Iacob (1912–1992). He was famous for his works in the fields of mathematical analysis, fluid mechanics, classical hydrodynamics and compressible-flow theory. At the age of 19, he graduated from the Mathematics Faculty in Bucharest, and then he went to Paris to continue his studies at the Faculty of Sciences, where he worked on a PhD thesis under the advice of famous French mathematician Henri Villat. On 24 June 1935, Caius Iacob successfully presented to the Sorbonne committee his PhD thesis about “Determination of conjugated harmonic functions with some limit conditions, and their applications in hydrodynamics”. Returning to Romania, Caius Iacob had a long and successful career teaching mathematics and mechanics at the universities of Timişoara, Cluj and Bucharest. His most important work is considered the “Mathematical introduction to the mechanics of fluids”. This book, providing original ways to work with classical hydrodynamics and compressible-flow theory, was published in Romanian in 1952 and in French in 1959. In 1955, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Romanian Academy, becoming a titular Member in 1963. He was also President of the Mathematics Section of the Romanian Academy from 1980 until the end of his life, in 1992. In 1991, he initiated the foundation of the “Romanian Academy Institute of Applied Mathematics”. In 2001 the institute merged with the “Centre for Mathematical Statistics”, which had been created in 1964 by mathematician Gheorghe Mihoc, thus creating the “Gheorghe Mihoc – Caius Iacob Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Applied Mathematics” of the Romanian Academy.

Abstract:
The Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) method of mobile robots has the problem of low accuracy in complex environments with dense clutter and various map features, such as complex indoor environments and underwater environments. This problem is mainly embodied in estimating the location and number of feature points on the map and the position of the robot itself. In order to solve this problem, a new method based on the probability hypothesis density (PHD) SLAM is proposed in this paper, a PHD-SLAM Method for Mixed Birth Map Information Based on Amplitude Information (AI-MBMI-PHD-SLAM). Firstly, this paper proposes a PHD-SLAM method based on amplitude information (AI-PHD-SLAM). The method uses the amplitude information of map features to obtain more precise map features. Then, the clutter likelihood function is used to improve the estimation accuracy of the feature map in the SLAM process. Meanwhile, this paper studies the performance of the PHD-SLAM method with the amplitude information under the condition of the known signal-to-noise ratio or the unknown signal-to-noise ratio. Secondly, aiming at the problem that PHD-SLAM lacks a priori information in the prediction stage, an AI-PHD-SLAM-based mixed birth map information method is added. In this method, map information that has been detected before the previous moment is added to the observation information in the map prediction phase as a new map information set in the prediction phase. This can increase the prior information and improve the problem of insufficient prior information in the prediction stage. The results of the experiments show that the proposed method and the improved method outperform the RB-PHD-SLAM method in estimating the number and location accuracy of map features and have higher computational efficiency.

Abstract:
Under the Gaussian noise assumption, the probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter represents a promising tool for tracking a group of moving targets with a time-varying number. However, inaccurate prior statistics of the random noise will degrade the performance of the PHD filter in many practical applications. This paper presents an adaptive Gaussian mixture PHD (AGM-PHD) filter for the multi-target tracking (MTT) problem in the scenario where both the mean and covariance of measurement noise sequences are unknown. The conventional PHD filters are extended to jointly estimate both the multi-target state and the aforementioned measurement noise statistics. In particular, the Normal-inverse-Wishart and Gaussian distributions are first integrated to represent the joint posterior intensity by transforming the measurement model into a new formulation. Then, the updating rule for the hyperparameters of the model is derived in closed form based on variational Bayesian (VB) approximation and Bayesian conjugate prior heuristics. Finally, the dynamic system state and the noise statistics are updated sequentially in an iterative manner. Simulations results with both constant velocity and constant turn model demonstrate that the AGM-PHD filter achieves comparable performance as the ideal PHD filter with true measurement noise statistics.

Abstract:
At the largest university in Tanzania, University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), the gender distribution is unequal. At the University’s Department of Mathematics (DoM), the number of women ranges between 20-30 %. As a PhD degree can pose an important bridge into higher academic positions, the purpose of this study is to discern the current prerequisites for women to complete a doctoral degree at UDSM, compared to their male colleagues. The thesis is based on a field study carried out at DoM, in the spring of 2018. As such, both the formal and the perceived conditions could be examined. During the field study, both focus groups and individual interviews were held. By means of Grounded Theory, a mainly inductive method, the empirical framework obtained from the field research has guided the study and recurrent observations from the local context analysis have shaped the results. As the methodological outset for the study also draws on abductive reasoning, it results in that the analysis is concurrently theoretically guided and based on obtained data. The conclusions from the field research show that the conditions for female and male PhD students at UDSM are not equal. There are policies, quotas and other initiatives introduced in an attempt to level the playfield, however, other policies and social norms that create challenges for women in their strive for an academic career are still in motion. Among other things, as women are expected to be the primary caretaker and there are no support systems in place, the decision to start a family affects women’s studies more than men’s.

Abstract:
Music Learning and Mathematics Achievement: A Real-World Study in English Primary Schools Edel Marie Sanders Abstract This study examines the potential for music education to enhance children's mathematical achievement and understanding. Psychological and neuroscientific research on the relationship between music and mathematics has grown considerably in recent years. Much of this, however, has been laboratory-based, short-term or small-scale research. The present study contributes to the literature by focusing on specific musical and mathematical elements, working principally through the medium of singing and setting the study in five primary schools over a full school year. Nearly 200 children aged seven to eight years, in six school classes, experienced structured weekly music lessons, congruent with English National Curriculum objectives for music but with specific foci. The quasi-experimental design employed two independent variable categories: musical focus (form, pitch relationships or rhythm) and mathematical teaching emphasis (implicit or explicit). In all other respects, lesson content was kept as constant as possible. Pretests and posttests in standardised behavioural measures of musical, spatial and mathematical thinking were administered to all children. Statistical analyses (two-way mixed ANOVAs) of student scores in these tests reveal positive significant gains in most comparisons over normative progress in mathematics for all musical emphases and both pedagogical conditions with slightly greater effects in the mathematically explicit lessons. This investigation addresses concerns that UK and US governments' quests for higher standards in mathematics typically result in impoverished curricula with limited access to the arts. In showing that active musical engagement over time can improve mathematical achievement, as hypothesised, this work adds to a growing body of research suggesting that policy-makers and educationalists should reconsider curriculum balance.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mathematics, 2008.<br>In title on title page, [phi] appears as lower case Greek letter.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 63-65).<br>Given a p-adic representation of the Galois group of a local field, we show that its Galois cohomology can be computed using the associated étale ([phi], [Gamma])-module over the Robba ring; this is a variant of a result of Herr. We then establish analogues, for not necessarily étale (([phi], [Gamma])-modules over the Robba ring, of the Euler-Poincaré characteristic formula and Tate local duality for p-adic representations. These results are expected to intervene in the duality theory for Selmer groups associated to de Rham representations. We introduce the notion of families of [phi]-modules which arises naturally from both rigid cohomology and p-adic Hodge theory. We then prove the local constancy of generic HN-polygons of families of overconvergent [phi]-modules and the semicontinuity of HN-polygons of families of [phi]-modules over reduced affinoid algebras. These results are prospective for a slope theory of families of (overconvergent) [phi]-modules.<br>by Ruochuan Liu.<br>Ph.D.

Abstract:
The research is aimed at the construction of a multi-level adaptive test (MST), for the evaluation of the mathematical skills of Italian students of Grade 10, and was carried out in collaboration with Invalsi for a PhD study of "La Sapienza" University of Rome. The research started from the definition of the construct to be measured, taking into account both national and international references. A specific item bank was then built. The test was administered to a sample of 4132 students. The experiment confirmed the advantages of an MST model. Interesting results emerged by comparing the adaptive part of the main paths with a linear tests consisting of the same number of items and administered to a sample of pre-test students and comparing the MST test with a simulated linear test, built on the same item bank and with the same numer of item of MST test.

Abstract:
Industrial hydraulic systems are complex, and show nonlinear dynamic behavior because of their nature. When it is not easy to deal with the nonlinear models, hydraulic systems are usually described by linear or linearized models around operating points. In this work a nonlinear dynamic and mathematic model for the position control of a double rod hydraulic actuator was developed. Three control strategies were implemented: PID control, optimal control (LQR) and control by Feedback Linearization. For the PID control and optimal control (LQR) strategies a linearized model of the hydraulic actuator was developed around a specific operating point, contrary to the Feedback Linearization control that have a wide operation range and the nonlinear model was used. These mathematical models were represented on Simulink environment, in order to compare and analyze the response and dynamic behavior. The optimal control (LQR) shows better settling time than the PID control, both without overshoot; and the Feedback Linearization show the best dynamic performance in terms of settling time with a little overshoot and disturbance tolerance.

Abstract:
This paper reports a detailed study of modal reduction based on either linear normal mode(LNM) analysis or proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) for modeling a single α-D glucopyranose monomer as well as a chain of monomers. Also a modal reduction method combining POD and component modal synthesis(CMS) is developed. The accuracy and efficiency of these methods are reported. The focus of this study is to determine to what extent these methods can reduce the time and cost of molecular modeling and simultaneously provide the required accuracy. It has been demonstrated that a linear reduced order model(ROM) is valid for small amplitude excitation and low frequency excitation. It is found that a nonlinear ROM based on POD modes provides a good approximation even for large excitation while the nonlinear ROM using linear eigenmodes as the basis vectors is less effective for modeling molecules with a strong nonlinearity. The ROM based on CMS using POD modes for each component also gives a good approximation. With the reduction in the dimension of the system using these methods the computational time and cost can be reduced significantly.
