Abstract:
Abstract Outcome data from 6 National Institutes of Health–funded Postbaccalaureate Research Education Programs (PREPs) in the Mid-Atlantic region were combined to give a multi-institutional perspective on their scholars’ characteristics and progress through biomedical research training. The institutions hosting these programs were Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Medical University of South Carolina, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The authors summarize the institutional pathways, demographics, undergraduate institutions, and graduate institutions for a total of 384 PREP scholars who completed the programs by June 2021. A total of 228 (59.4%) of these PREP scholars identified as Black or African American, 116 (30.2%) as Hispanic or Latinx, and 269 (70.0%) as female. The authors found that 376 of 384 scholars (97.9%) who started PREP finished their program, 319 of 376 (84.8%) who finished PREP matriculated into PhD or MD/PhD programs, and 284 of 319 (89.0%) who matriculated have obtained their PhD or are successfully making progress toward their PhD.

Abstract:
At the start of the PhD journey everything is new for the postgraduate student.  There will be a whole array of regulations from the university to become familiar with, at the same time as getting familiar with your supervisors and learning to work with fellow postgraduate students and starting to do the actual PhD work.  Finding out how and when the university assesses progress is often far down the list of priorities for a new PhD student.  We argue that it is important to know the rules around progress and transfer assessment, since these regulations, and the expectations of what the student should produce, may vary between universities and even between faculties.  The paper concludes with a set of recommendations for students, supervisors and universities to consider.

Abstract:
Certain racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds remain underrepresented (UR) in the biomedical sciences. This underrepresentation becomes more extreme at each higher education stage. To support UR scholars during the critical transition from baccalaureate to PhD, we established an intensive, 1-yr postbaccalaureate training program. We hypothesized that this intervention would strengthen each participant’s competitiveness for leading PhD programs and build a foundation of skills and self-efficacy important for success during and after graduate school. Scholar critical analysis skills, lab technique knowledge, and Graduate Record Examination scores all improved significantly during the program. Scholars reported significant confidence growth in 21 of 24 categories related to success in research careers. In 5 yr, 91% (41/45) of scholars transitioned directly into PhD programs. Importantly, 40% (18/45) of participating postbaccalaureate scholars had previously been declined acceptance into graduate school; however, 17/18 of these scholars directly entered competitive PhD programs following our training program. Alumni reported they were “extremely well” prepared for graduate school, and 95% (39/41) are currently making progress to graduation with a PhD. In conclusion, we report a model for postbaccalaureate training that could be replicated to increase participation and success among UR scholars in the biomedical sciences.

Abstract:
Research policy observers are increasingly concerned about the impact of the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on university research. Yet we know little about the effect of this disruption, specifically on PhD students, their mental health, and their research progress. This study drew from survey responses of UK PhD students during the Covid-19 pandemic. We explored evidence of depression and coping behaviour (N = 1780), and assessed factors relating to demographics, PhD characteristics, Covid-19-associated personal circumstances, and significant life events that could explain PhD student depression during the research disruption (N = 1433). The majority of the study population (86%) reported a negative effect on their research progress during the pandemic. Results based on eight mental health symptoms (PHQ-8) showed that three in four PhD students experienced significant depression. Live-in children and lack of funding were among the most significant factors associated with developing depression. Engaging in approach coping behaviours (i.e., those alleviating the problem directly) related to lower levels of depression. By assessing the impact of research disruption on the UK PhD researcher community, our findings indicate policies to manage short-term risks but also build resilience in academic communities against current and future disruptions.

Hunter, Evan R. "Stakeholder perspectives of contextual engagement of PhD programs at select evangelical seminaries in the Majority World." Thesis, Trinity International University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3685509.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> This research utilized qualitative methods to explore how students and faculty perceive the contextual engagement of the PhD program at three select theological institutions in the Majority World. This research has value, as such engagement is both an explicit and implicit value of doctoral programs located in the Majority World. Over the last decade, the number of PhD programs established to serve the church in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East and the number of students in them has risen rapidly. The research is descriptive in nature and not an attempt to evaluate the level of success or merit of such programs. Rather, it assumed that each program engages its context and sought to identify common themes as well as areas of convergence and divergence as indicated by faculty and student stakeholders. </p><p> The study consisted of thirty-six interviews. Sets of six faulty members and six doctoral students at each of three seminaries located in the Majority World were asked to share from their experiences in the doctoral program. The participating schools were Africa International University in Nairobi, Kenya; South Asian Institute for Advanced Christian Studies in Bangalore, India and Seminario Teol&oacute;gico Centroamericano, Guatemala City, Guatemala. The study asked participants to describe how the PhD program engages the context including classroom teaching and learning tasks, course outputs, including dissertations, and other non-formal aspects of the doctoral experience. </p><p> The findings revealed three primary categories of contextual engagement described by the faculty and students across the three contexts. The participants first described how the intentional design of the programs including explicit and implicit components of the curriculum engage the context. Secondly, students and faculty addressed issues of worldview and cultural values. Contextual insiders provide a depth of understanding not available outside of the context. Intracultural critique ensures contextually engaged aspects are improved through peer interactions. Finally, student and faculty participants found adult learning practices very helpful to overcome conditioned dependency on traditional education models. Participants perceived these practices as particularly helpful for engaging the local context.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
<p> The purpose of this study was to contribute to the debate over the value of the Ph.D. versus the Ed.D. in higher education. A mixed methods design was used to explore why some institutions simultaneously offer two tracks to the higher education doctorate (Ph.D. and Ed.D.) and the difference between programs at institutions where only one track to the doctorate was offered. Specifically, I aimed to identify the level of distinction between these two types of doctoral degrees. The differences were examined between the Ph.D. and the Ed.D. in higher education in terms of programs&rsquo; rationale, mission, admission requirements, curricula, and dissertations. The research study relies on the inputs-environment-outcomes model proposed by Astin (1993). In the first phase of this study qualitative data were collected from five doctoral programs in higher education that offered both Ph.D. and Ed.D. tracks to the doctorate in higher education. The results from the qualitative phase were used for the development of a questionnaire and a dissertation analysis form to be used in the second quantitative phase of the study.</p><p> The quantitative phase of the study consisted of a survey and a curriculum analysis of more with more than 2,600 courses from 125 doctoral programs in higher education. Fife&rsquo;s (1991) classification of higher education courses was used to categorize and compare the curriculum of Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs. Based on the results of this study, a profile of Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs in higher education was developed.</p>

Abstract:
U.S. doctoral program completion rates have remained persistently low in the humanities and biomedical sciences despite educators' efforts. A variety of factors, including stress and dissitation advisor-related issues, were associated with high attrition rates and extended time-to-degree for PhD candidates. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine relationships among life stressors, advisor-related factors, and time-to-degree for a convenience sample of 74 online social sciences doctoral degree holders. Holmes and Rahe's work on stress and Tinto's framework for education program attrition provided the framework for the study. Linear regression and Pearson's correlation statistics were used to examine the relationships between Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) scores, Advisor-Related Factor scores, and time-to-degree after controlling for covariates of age, ethnicity, and gender. Key findings included: a) SRRS significantly (p < .01) predicted time-to-degree after controlling for age, ethnicity, and gender; and b) no significant relationship was found between advisor-related factors. By identifying at-risk students, early intervention could reduce the time need to complete a PhD program and reduce financial and university resources required to finish. Doctoral program administrators could provide closer supervision with PhD candidates and make adjustments based on an accumulation of extraordinary stressors to help PhD candidiates adjust and finish their programs.

Abstract:
Our initial studies reported on the cloning and characterization of FoxP3 (T regulatory cell specific) for the first time in any teleost species along with T-bet and STAT6 in zebrafish, which are specific to Th1 and Th2 cells respectively and looked at their expression in the zebrafish.  Our next studies focused on CD4 expression by T cells and addresses the question whether teleost Th cells are functionally similar to their mammalian counterpart.  A CD4 specific antibody was developed and using molecular techniques have been able to characterise for the first time CD4+ cells within the zebrafish. In addition, to the CD4L gene, three other novel CD4 related genes have also been discovered which need to be investigated, which could mean in fish different T helper cell populations exist expressing CD4 related molecules.  Another FoxP3 gene was discovered, a factor important in controlling the differentiation and function of T regulatory (Treg) cells, and so we shifted our investigations to studying these FoxP3 molecules within the zebrafish model.  These two orthologs of mammalian FoxP3 were only found in zebrafish and it appears that higher vertebrates including modern fish only have one copy of the FoxP3 gene.  Through the development of an antibody we were also able to look at the expression of the zebrafish genes within cells and determine where they were being expressed.  Lastly, having all the molecular tools that were developed during the course of this thesis, allowed us to use <i>in vivo </i>zebrafish models of <i>Mycobacterium marinum </i>and <i>Salmonella typhimurium </i>infection, and attempt to determine the types of adaptive immune responses that were being developed. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms behind the teleost adaptive immune response will help to establish the zebrafish model for vertebrate immune function.

Abstract:
Supervision is the process of guiding postgraduates throughout their research by engaging in active communication to understand a concept. Ph.D supervisors help the student to decide on clear topics with manageable objectives. Students interact with supervisors with the aim of getting the necessary guidance related to their research works. Online supervision is a comparably new form of student-teacher interaction, the rules of this kind of supervision are not yet fully defined. This paper provides a review of PhD supervision importance as a fundamental part in the preparation of Ph.D students for research both at postgraduate level and in the wider community. The role and responsibilities of the research supervisor differ from one university to another, and there are many different forms of supervision. It is necessary to attain a balance between supporting a new researcher and making them self-independent. Internet-based supervision is the process of interacting between the supervisor and the researcher to discuss the progress of research, where online supervision is the process of communicating and discussing pre-defined goals that involves student-instructor active participation and interaction through online means. Idealism is an educational philosophy concept that concentrates on thinking and how human beings produce knowledge from within. Supervision realism is the relatively conflict-free, transference-free, undistorted interactions or experiences (internal and external) of supervisor and supervisee that occur by means of the supervisory relationship. This article will focus on the online supervision of PhD students in Saudi Arabia, it will also conduct a review of online supervision idealism and realism.

Abstract:
In the history of AI, two main paradigms have been proposed to solve Sequential Decision Making (SDM) problems: Automated Planning (AP) and Reinforcement Learning (RL). Among the many proposals to unify both fields, the one known as neurosymbolic AI has recently attracted great attention. It combines the Deep Neural Networks used in modern RL with the symbolic representations typical of AP. The main goal of this PhD is to progress the state of the art in neurosymbolic AI for SDM, developing methods for both solving these problems and learning aspects of their structure.

Wideman, Jr., Robert F., Nicholas B. Anthony, Avigdor Cahaner, Alan Shlosberg, Michel Bellaiche, and William B. Roush. Integrated Approach to Evaluating Inherited Predictors of Resistance to Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome (Ascites) in Fast Growing Broiler Chickens. United States Department of Agriculture, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2000.7575287.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Background PHS (pulmonary hypertension syndrome, ascites syndrome) is a serious cause of loss in the broiler industry, and is a prime example of an undesirable side effect of successful genetic development that may be deleteriously manifested by factors in the environment of growing broilers. Basically, continuous and pinpointed selection for rapid growth in broilers has led to higher oxygen demand and consequently to more frequent manifestation of an inherent potential cardiopulmonary incapability to sufficiently oxygenate the arterial blood. The multifaceted causes and modifiers of PHS make research into finding solutions to the syndrome a complex and multi threaded challenge. This research used several directions to better understand the development of PHS and to probe possible means of achieving a goal of monitoring and increasing resistance to the syndrome. Research Objectives (1) To evaluate the growth dynamics of individuals within breeding stocks and their correlation with individual susceptibility or resistance to PHS; (2) To compile data on diagnostic indices found in this work to be predictive for PHS, during exposure to experimental protocols known to trigger PHS; (3) To conduct detailed physiological evaluations of cardiopulmonary function in broilers; (4) To compile data on growth dynamics and other diagnostic indices in existing lines selected for susceptibility or resistance to PHS; (5) To integrate growth dynamics and other diagnostic data within appropriate statistical procedures to provide geneticists with predictive indices that characterize resistance or susceptibility to PHS. Revisions In the first year, the US team acquired the costly Peckode weigh platform / individual bird I.D. system that was to provide the continuous (several times each day), automated weighing of birds, for a comprehensive monitoring of growth dynamics. However, data generated were found to be inaccurate and irreproducible, so making its use implausible. Henceforth, weighing was manual, this highly labor intensive work precluding some of the original objectives of using such a strategy of growth dynamics in selection procedures involving thousands of birds. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements 1. Healthy broilers were found to have greater oscillations in growth velocity and acceleration than PHS susceptible birds. This proved the scientific validity of our original hypothesis that such differences occur. 2. Growth rate in the first week is higher in PHS-susceptible than in PHS-resistant chicks. Artificial neural network accurately distinguished differences between the two groups based on growth patterns in this period. 3. In the US, the unilateral pulmonary occlusion technique was used in collaboration with a major broiler breeding company to create a commercial broiler line that is highly resistant to PHS induced by fast growth and low ambient temperatures. 4. In Israel, lines were obtained by genetic selection on PHS mortality after cold exposure in a dam-line population comprising of 85 sire families. The wide range of PHS incidence per family (0-50%), high heritability (about 0.6), and the results in cold challenged progeny, suggested a highly effective and relatively easy means for selection for PHS resistance 5. The best minimally-invasive diagnostic indices for prediction of PHS resistance were found to be oximetry, hematocrit values, heart rate and electrocardiographic (ECG) lead II waves. Some differences in results were found between the US and Israeli teams, probably reflecting genetic differences in the broiler strains used in the two countries. For instance the US team found the S wave amplitude to predict PHS susceptibility well, whereas the Israeli team found the P wave amplitude to be a better valid predictor. 6. Comprehensive physiological studies further increased knowledge on the development of PHS cardiopulmonary characteristics of pre-ascitic birds, pulmonary arterial wedge pressures, hypotension/kidney response, pulmonary hemodynamic responses to vasoactive mediators were all examined in depth. Implications, scientific and agricultural Substantial progress has been made in understanding the genetic and environmental factors involved in PHS, and their interaction. The two teams each successfully developed different selection programs, by surgical means and by divergent selection under cold challenge. Monitoring of the progress and success of the programs was done be using the in-depth estimations that this research engendered on the reliability and value of non-invasive predictive parameters. These findings helped corroborate the validity of practical means to improve PHT resistance by research-based programs of selection.
