Abstract:
Dissemination of scientific results is an important and necessary component of research activity. Nowadays research asks to be widely diffused and shared in a larger community in the effort to demonstrate its innovation and originality, so to enlarge network and obtain funds to keep working. In this context, PhD students, as part of scientific community and young researchers in training, have to understand the rule of publications to define the best strategy for the dissemination of their research. The present book, through the experiences of national and international PhD candidates, PhDs and Professors, is a contribute in the current opened debate on the most effective strategies and related tools to design specific actions, to highlight and improve the peculiar qualities and disciplines of each research.

Abstract:
In the current socio-cultural scenario, the implementation of the university reform aimed at boosting third-level education calls for meditation within the discipline of Architectural Technology (ICAR 12). This review must address the research topics and academic profiles of PhD courses in the Technological Area, also in terms of fostering actions consistent with European strategic lines for the promotion of a knowledge society. Research, innovation, creativity and design are the keywords of this scenario that PhD students and lecturers must bear in mind when considering three fields of study: environmental design and landscape, building production and construction and works and services strategic for the community. This book "Research among innovation, creativity and design" develops the topics addressed during the VII OSDOTTA workshop (the network of PhD courses in the field of Architectural Technology) held at the Mantua campus of Milan Polytechnic on 15th-16th-17th September 2011.

The third volume of Saggi di anglistica e americanistica is the last in the series published under the aegis of the University of Florence PhD course in English and American Studies which, after 25 years, will terminate its activities in 2013. This last collection once again attests to the worth of the PhD's educational programme and aims: it brings together the essays produced by ten young scholars over the last three years of research, in view of preparing their PhD dissertations. They are essays that range from literary phenomena and their historic, linguistic and socio-cultural contexts, to problems posed by texts from Anglo-American to South African, Australian and Caribbean cultures, confirming the variety of the Florence PhD students' research interests and approaches. Tkachenko, Olha. Searching for Identity: Personal Experiences and Methodological Reflections. Edited by Ayur Zhanaev. University of Warsaw Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31338/uw.9788323548157.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume is dedicated to the International PhD Program “Searching for Identity: Global Challenges, Local Traditions,” organized at the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” of the University of Warsaw, in 2013–2018. The volume aims at showing identity as a processual concept, using the example of the researcher as a living personality. It thus corresponds with the general trend in the humanities and social sciences to pay attention to the researcher and the ways his or her personal background and experience influence the generation of knowledge. By introducing this topic, we would like to show completing a PhD, or any other research, as a dynamic process with a personal history of success and failure, as well as to demonstrate the impact of the “Searching for Identity” project.

FoodBalt 2023 : 16th Baltic Conference on Food Science and Technology "Traditional Meets Non-Traditional in Future Food, Jelgava, May 11-12, 2023 : abstract book. Abstract:
Welcome to the sixteenth FOODBALT conference established by professor Petras Rimantas Venskutonis in 2006. Since then, it has been organized in Kaunas, Tallinn and Jelgava attracting researchers from many countries outside Baltics. We are glad that numerous PhD students take the chance to present their work along with established researchers. In FOODBALT 2023, researchers from 11 countries will present their latest scientific achievements in 8 sessions, comprising three key lectures, 34 oral presentations and 68 pitch presentations. The main topics include: Trends and Innovations in Food Science and Technology; Valorisation of Co-products, Nontraditional Ingredients, and Food Waste; Consumer’s Preferences and Food Choices; Challenges in Nutrition Science; and Other Topics of Food Science and Technology. The abstracts submitted indicated that quality research in food science often requires a multidisciplinary team. Thus, many studies were completed by partners from various departments of the same institution, by partners from different research institutions of the same country, by multinational researcher teams and also in partnership with industry. We believe that you will enjoy and have benefit from attending the 16th Baltic Conference on Food Science and Technology “TRADITIONAL MEETS NONTRADITIONAL IN FUTURE FOOD” held in Jelgava on May 11th and12th, 2023.

Pacchioni, Gianfranco. Are we too many? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198799887.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter starts by making a comparison between a famous congress of the past, the Solvay Conference of 1927, which was attended by only 29 scientists, and the mega conferences of present day with several thousand participants. This introduces the central question of the book: how many scientists are active today? Are there too many? The discussion looks at the annual growth rate in scientists versus the world’s population, membership totals of scientific societies over time, and the amount of money spent on research and development by different regions, such as the USA, Europe, and East and Southeast Asia. The discussion moves then to the number of PhD students and their goal to gain an academic position. Increasingly strong competition for young researcher is often the reason for cases of misconduct, including fraud.

Vaughan, Laurene. The Impact of a PhD on Design Practice. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350151079.

Full text
Abstract:
The Impact of a PhD on Design Practice assesses the value and impact of design PhDs for design practitioners, exploring in detail and through perspectives from a range of international designers how a doctorate can develop research and critical thinking skills that will enhance their professional practice. The book develops the contribution of Laurene Vaughan's earlier work Practice-Based Design Research in furthering the global understanding of this dynamic and expanding area of design education. Whereas the earlier work provided a survey of key issues and developments in doctoral education in design globally, this book delves deeper by focusing on the experience of those who have undertaken design PhDs and taken their expertise into industry settings. Designers from Europe, the USA and Australasia working in a range of design disciplines provide perspectives on how they have used project design, research, analytical and writing skills and developed as a result of completing a PhD to enrich their professional practice and add value to their organisations. The Impact of a PhD on Design Practice is relevant not only to doctoral students who anticipate an academic career, but also to practitioners and those interested in undertaking doctoral research in order to bring their insights from their research to practice.
