Abstract:
In line with the ORPHEUS guidelines, to encourage international recognition of PhD theses, the Faculty of Medicine University of Belgrade (FMUB) promotes writing PhD theses in English. FMUB also requests and encourages PhD candidates to publish their results in international journals before thesis submission so as to increase their visibility in the scientific community. In addition to specific topics in medicine, PhD education needs to cover topics of general interest to researchers, in particular copyright and originality issues in scientific research. By adopting the concepts and terms of copyright, PhD candidates learn the importance of intellectual property and avoid plagiarism. As writing a PhD thesis in English may increase textual overlap between the thesis and the candidate's own published papers (in English) originating from the thesis, there may be some dilemmas in practice as to whether such textual overlap should be considered self-plagiarism or not. In line with the regulations at the top universities in the field of medicine, FMUB has adopted the conclusion that textual overlap between the thesis and the thesis-based publications of the candidate does not represent self-plagiarism, provided that certain conditions are met. Namely, regardless of the language of the dissertation, the key aspects of academic integrity in writing a PhD thesis should be honesty and transparency, namely, transparently linking the thesis-based publications with the final thesis; honestly and appropriately referencing the statements or any other content taken from the candidate's own previous work (unrelated to thesis) or other people's work; and transparently acknowledging the contribution from coauthors and team members in the thesis. These recommendations will improve transparency of thesis writing, protect PhD candidates and their supervisors, enhance internationalization of PhD programs, and further promote academic honesty in medical research and publishing.

Zhang, Hao. "PhD thesis on liquidity of bond market." Thesis, City University London, 2013. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/2983/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of empirical and theoretical studies on the liquidity of bond markets. In the first study, we present an extended model for the estimation of the effective bid-ask spread that improves the existing models and offers a new direction of generalisation. The quoted bid-ask spread represents the prices available at a given time for transactions only up to some relatively small trade size. Trades can be executed inside or outside the quoted bid-ask spread. Thus, we extend Roll's model to include multiple spreads of different sizes and their associated probabilities. The extended model is estimated via a Bayesian approach, and the fit of the model to a time series of a year of corporate bond transaction data is assessed by a Bayesian model selection method. Results show that our extended model fits the data better. Our second study examines the relationships between different liquidity proxies and the non-default corporate yield spread as well as the effective bid-ask spread. We first separate the non-default component of bond spreads from the default one by using the information contained in credit default swaps. We then apply our state-space extension of the Roll model to disentangle the unobservable non-default yield spread from the effective bid-ask spread. The empirical results show that the non-default yield spread has a nonlinear relationship with time to maturity and a positive correlation with the bid-ask spread as well as with the default risk, and therefore may reflect the future expected liquidity. We find that the effective bid-ask spread is related to bond characteristics associated with illiquidity (e.g. timeto-maturity and issue amount) and trading activity measures (e.g. daily turnover, and daily average trade size), indicating that transactions costs are more likely to be associated with the current level of liquidity rather than the future expected liquidity. We also find that the non-default component accounted for a bigger proportion of the yield spread before the financial crisis 2007 - 2009, whereas during the crisis credit risk played a more influential role in determining the yield spread. Common factors such as the underlying volatility and CDS spread explain more of the variation in the non-default yield spread and the bid-ask spread than idiosyncratic factors such as timeto-maturity, issue size, and trading activity proxies do. The third study presents an equilibrium model in which the heterogeneity of liquidity among bonds is determined endogenously. In particular we show that bonds differ in their liquidity despite having identical cash flow, riskiness and issue amount. Under certain conditions, we show that investors have strong preference for concentrating trading on a small number of bonds. We conjecture that the identity of the ones which are traded may result from a `Sunspot' equilibrium where it is optimal for traders to randomly label a subset of the bonds as the `liquid' ones and concentrating trading on them. We also show that changing the model assumptions leads to different equilibrium configurations where trading is spread over the bonds. In addition, by utilising the concepts of stochastic dominance, utility indifference pricing, and some specific assumptions on asset value and order arrival rate, the equilibrium prices and bid-ask spreads can be quantified.

Pocknee, David Antony. "How to compose a PhD thesis in music composition." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2017. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34371/.

Full text
Abstract:
I start from the principle that composition is a historical lineage of techniques that have traditionally been applied to music but need not be. To illustrate this, I apply composition principles to the writing of this PhD thesis. In describing this process, I draw parallels between the music work I have composed during 2013-2017 and the process of thesis writing. Along the way, I show how quantization is not only central to my composition practice but fundamental to the act of composing; I rethink the basic epistemological principles of PhD research, using John Cage's ideology of chance and Arthur Koestler's idea of bisociation; I develop a new set of categories for classifying artworks that use combinatorics, under the umbrella neologism 'completism'; expand upon James Tenney's ideas to create a new typology of musical form based on completist principles; and finish by composing the bibliography, font, page-layout, semantics, word choice, and syntax of the Conclusion of this thesis.

Abstract:
Posterpresentation:  IFHE World Congress 2012 , 16-21 juli  Melbourne Australia International Federation for Home Economics Global Wellbeing Global creativity and innovation: Developing capacities for sustainable futures   Abstract “The Conscious Meal “– ideas for studies in a PhD-thesis PhD Student Cecilia M Sporre, Associate Professor Inger M Jonsson, The School of Hospitality, Culinary arts &amp; Meal Science, Örebro University, Sweden Aim The aim is to discuss ideas for a newly started PhD thesis. The focus is on a rather tacit concept -“The Conscious Meal”- that was the description of a meal consisting of taste, nutrition and aesthetic expressions in the 1980´s. This holds for the curriculum of Culinary Arts and Meal Science in Sweden. Is it possible to deepen, develop and consolidate this concept and use it in information about food and meals? Methods At The School of Hospitality, Culinary Arts &amp; Meal Science in Örebro University, Sweden, the basis of the education is Science, Practical skills and Aesthetics. These three forms of knowledge is the fundamental platform for the subject. The unique method used in education and research is named FAMM (Five Aspects Meal Model, i.e. the room, meeting, product, control management system giving the atmosphere). The method can be used as a planning and analysis tool for public and private meals. Another useful method is the original and the applied versions of the French Sapere method; an experimental method using raw materials from the food sector, studying and working with the individual components and sensory experiences in the meal. Possible methods to discuss the concept with key groups will be interviews, research circles, focus groups, observations, and maybe analysis on grounded theory etc. Results/findings To be discussed; Ideas of studies Study I:  Daily meals for people with intellectual disability in community living – results forthcoming Study II:  Culinary Success Factors – results forthcoming Study III:  The meal as a pedagogical tool Study IV:  Children’s meals Conclusions New skills and influences affect our approach to the meal of today. Developing the concept of “The Conscious Meal” could give tools for education and eating guidelines in a holistic way.  This may raise the awareness both in public and private meals.<br>Ideas for studies in a PhD-thesis

Abstract:
Currently, it is important in Ukraine to harmonize cloud technologies application with European and world scientific initiatives. Need to modernize preparation of future PhDs is caused by challenges of new information, globalized society and digital transformation of all spheres of life, including education and science. The research was aimed to determine features of cloud services application in preparation of future PhDs. Concepts of “cloud computing”, “cloud technologies”, “cloud learning technologies”, “cloud services”, “cloud oriented environment” were analyzed. Experience of cloud technologies and their services application in educational and scientific space in researches of foreign and Ukrainian students was considered. Ukrainian experience in preparation of future PhD of various specialties with cloud services application was analyzed. It was emphasized that approaches improving to preparation of future PhDs based on cloud services application would increase their level of digital competence. It is recommended to include a separate course or module of specific discipline on work with cloud technologies and services during preparation of future PhDs. It is important to improve disciplines and tools content to support education process. It can be learning of disciplines using cloud technologies or services by future PhD’s. Also, cloud services application to support scientific and scientific-organizational activities will increase level of organization and implementation of scientific research. It is important to create cloud-oriented environment for preparation of future PhDs in higher education and research institutions. Making cloud-oriented educational and scientific environment should be based on principles of open education. It is recommended to use cloud-based platforms and services (G Suite for Education; Microsoft Office 365; specialized SaaS (CoCalc or other)).

Dudareva, Natalia, Alexander Vainstein, Eran Pichersky, and David Weiss. Integrating biochemical and genomic approaches to elucidate C6-C2 volatile production: improvement of floral scent and fruit aroma. United States Department of Agriculture, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2007.7696514.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The specific objectives of approved proposal include to: 1. Elucidate the C6-C2 biochemical pathways leading to the biosynthesis of phenylacetaldehyde, phenylethyl alcohol and phenylethyl acetate in floral tissues of ornamentally important plants, pefunia and roses. 2. Isolate and characterrze genes responsible for the production of these C6-C2 compounds and those involved in the regulation of the pathway using genomic and transcriptomic tools. 3. Determine whether altering the expression of key genes of this pathway can result in changing the aroma characteristics of flowers. Aldehydes are intermediates in a variety of biochemical pathways including those involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, vitamins, steroids, amino acids, benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, hormones, and lipids. In plants they are also synthesized in response to environmental stresses such as salinity, cold, and heat shock or as flavors and aromas in fruits and flowers. Phenylacetaldehyde along with 2-phenylethanol and its acetate ester, are important scent compounds in numerous flowers, including petunias and roses. However, little is known about the biosynthesis of these volatile compounds in plants. We have shown that the formation PHA and 2-phenylethanol from Phe does not occur via trans-cinnamic acid and instead competes with the key enzyme of phenypropanoid metabolism Pheammonia-lyase (PAL) for Phe utilization. Using functional genomic approach and comparative gene expression profiling, we have isolated and characterized a novel enzyme from petunia and rose flowers that catalyzes the formation of the Ca-Czcompound phenylacetaldehyde (PHA) from L-phenylalanine (Phe) by the removal of both the carboxyl and amino groups. This enzyme, designated as phenylacetaldehyde synthases (PAAS), is a bifunctional enzyme that catalyzes the unprecedented efficient coupling of phenylalanine decarboxylation to oxidation, generating phenylacetaldehyde, CO2, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide in stoichiometric amounts. Down-regulation of PAAS expression via RNA interference-based (RNAi) technology in petunia resulted in no PHA emission when compared with controls. These plants also produced no 2-phenylethanol, supporting our conclusion that PHA is a precursor of 2-phenylethanol. To understand the regulation of scent formation in plants we have also generated transgenic petunia and tobacco plants expressing the rose alcohol acetyltransferase (RhAAT) gene under the control of a CaMV-35S promoter. Although the preferred substrate of RhAAT in vitro is geraniol, in transgenic petunia flowers, it used phenylethyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol to produce the corresponding acetate esters, not generated by control flowers. These results strongly point to the dependence of volatile production on substrate availability. Analysis of the diurnal regulation of scent production in rose flowers revealed that although the daily emission of most scent compounds is synchronized, various independently evolved mechanisms control the production, accumulation and release of different volatiles. This research resulted in a fundamental discovery of biochemical pathway, enzymes and genes involved in biosynthesis of C6-C2s compounds, and provided the knowledge for future engineering plants for improved scent quality.
