Abstract:

When marketing researchers select their methodology, two main choices are open to them: qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative has long been associated with scientific, empirical research based on statistics and numerical comparisons, considered by some marketing analysts to be objective and empirical. Qualitative methods are favored for “soft” social science and humanities research as a means to explore human opinions and perceptions through first-hand experience. Thus there has been a longstanding problem of pursuing qualitative research that is considered as free from bias and accurate as its quantitative counterpart. One philosopher who set out to imbue qualitative methodology with the same credibility given quantitative was Edmund Husserl, an early 1900s German philosopher. He developed transcendental phenomenology as a methodology that could explore experiences with the same objectivity as quantitative styles via surpassing the preconceptions of the researcher through use of a primordial fugue state called epoché. Although researcher would use qualitative tools such as interviews and questionnaires, inquiries would be formulated and analyzed free from preconceptions and bias, processed via bracketing of the most common responses. Husserl’s writings were hard to decipher and not as readily adapted to research as other qualitative methods, including hermeneutic phenomenology, which includes researcher input. Nevertheless, if used properly, even for such unlikely-seeming research projects as those dealing with marketing, transcendental phenomenology can produce valid and reliable results yielding valuable information for philosophical purists capable of rigor and discipline.

Abstract:
Phenomenology is a ritual of Qualitative research methodology. Interviews in healthcare enables researchers to recognise and understand data from lived experiences of the participants by using Phenomenological approach. The purpose of this article is to review the various face to face in depth interviews conducted using Husserl’s descriptive, Heidegger’s interpretive phenomenology or Hermeneutic phenomenological approach in healthcare. The in-depth interview will help to understand the health issues and ethical issues faced by participants. Methodology Four articles were selected based on phenomenological approach. Article.1 was based on Hermeneutic Phenomenology approach. In this study thirteen women were taken as sample. Sampling was done by snowball method. The women were asked to share their rural maternity experience. Data was analyzed without any influence of the researcher. Article.2 was based on Transcendental phenomenology. There were 15 students from 4 different cultural background belonging to different health professional programmes like nursing, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and physical therapy. Triangulation methods were used and semi structured interviews were conducted, recorded and transcribed. Health professional students shared their lived experience with patients. Article.3 was based on a study conducted using both Transcendental phenomenology for patients interviews and Hermeneutic phenomenology for healthcare professionals’ interviews. The semi structured interview of patient was taken to understand and record their lived experience with the medication without any bias or interpretation and data received was bracketed. The healthcare professionals’ interviews were conducted on Hermeneutic strategy regarding the medications they prescribe for life threatening illnesses. Article 4 was based on Hermeneutic phenomenological approach. There were nine patients selected and in depth semi-structured interviews were conducted. The patients shared their experience of living with a life limiting illness.

Abstract:
Purpose: This paper is a critical review of descriptive phenomenological methodology in Korean nursing research. We propose constructive suggestions for the improvement of descriptive phenomenological methodology in light of Husserl's phenomenological approaches. Methods: Using the key words of 'phenomenology,' 'experience,' and 'nursing,' we identify and analyze 64 Korean empirical phenomenological studies (selected from 282 studies) published in 14 Korean nursing journals from 2005 to 2018. The PubMed and the Korea Citation Index were used to identify the studies. Results: Our analysis shows that all the reviewed articles used Giorgi's or Colaizzi's scientific phenomenological methodology, without critical attention to Husserl's philosophical phenomenological principles. Conclusions: The use of scientific phenomenology in nursing research, which originated in North America, has become a global phenomenon, and Korean phenomenological nursing research has faithfully followed this scholarly trend. This paper argues that greater integration of Husserlian phenomenological principles into scientific phenomenological methodology in nursing research, such as participant-centered bracketing and eidetic reduction, is needed to ensure that scientific phenomenology lives up to its promise as a research methodology.

Abstract:
In this article, we describe our approach and philosophical methodology of teaching and doing phenomenology. The human science seminar that we offer involves participants in the primary phenomenological literature as well as in a variety of carefully engaged writing exercises. Each seminar participant selects a personal phenomenological project that aims at producing a publishable research paper. We show how the qualitative methodology of hermeneutic phenomenology requires of its practitioner a sensitivity and attitudinal disposition that has to be internalized and that cannot be captured in a procedural or step-by-step program. Our experience is that seminar participants become highly motivated and committed to their phenomenological project while involved in the rather intense progression of lectures, workshop activities, readings, and discussions.

Abstract:
As a social science research method that will be influenced by phenomenology, phenomenological qualitative research has established itself as one of the major qualitative research traditions that explores human experience. Nevertheless, confusion still exists around phenomenological qualitative research. Therefore, this study tried to explore the confusion related to the concept of phenomenological qualitative research and its alternatives in terms of tasks and prospects. As a result, this study presented a discussion on issues such as the name of phenomenological qualitative research, the subject and approach of the study, the meaning structure as a result, and writing as a description of the result. The results of this study may provide implications for qualitative researchers in carrying out phenomenological qualitative research in accordance with a more methodological concept.

Abstract:
Hermeneutic phenomenology, as a methodology, is not fixed. Inherent in its enactment are contested areas of practice such as how interview data are used and reported. Using philosophical notions drawn from hermeneutic phenomenological literature, we argue that working with crafted stories is congruent with the philosophical underpinnings of this methodology. We consider how the practical ontic undertaking of story crafting from verbatim transcripts is integral with the interpretive process. We show how verbatim transcripts can be crafted into stories through examples taken from interview data. Our aim is to open dialogue with other hermeneutic phenomenological researchers and offer alternate possibilities to conventional ways of work with qualitative data. We argue that crafted stories can provide glimpses of phenomena that other forms of data analysis and presentation may leave hidden. We contend that crafted stories are an acceptable and trustworthy methodological device.

Halldorsdottir, Sigiridur. "Caring and uncaring encounters in nursing and health care : Developing a theory." Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Omvårdnad, 1996. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-27488.

Full text
Abstract:
The general aim of the present thesis was to develop a theory on caring and uncaring encounters within nursing and health care from the patient's perspective. Results of an analysis of two phenomenological studies (paper I), as well as research findings from five other phenomenological studies (papers II-VI), were used to develop the theory. Caring and uncaring can be conceptualized on a continuum symbolizing five basic modes of being with another, which, for example, involves a neutral mode of being with another, where the individual is perceived as neither caring nor uncanng. There are two major metaphors in the theory, that of the bridge, symbolizing the openness in communication and the connectedness experienced by the recipient of care in an encounter perceived as caring. The other metaphor is the wall, which symbolizes negative or no communication, detachment and lack of a caring connection, experienced by the recipient in an encounter perceived as uncaring. In the theory the importance of professional caring within nursing and health care is proposed, essentially involving competence, caring, and connection. The above-mentioned 'bridge' is developed through mutual trust and the development of a connection between the professional and the recipient. This connection is a combination of professional intimacy and a comfortable distance of respect and compassion -- professional distance. On the other hand, uncaring involves perceived indifference and incompetence, creating distrust, disconnection and the above-mentioned 'wall' of negative or no communication. The recipient of professional caring is influenced positively. Theconsequences, which are an increased sense of well-being and health, can be summarized as empowerment. Uncaring, however, has the negative consequences of decreased sense of well-being and health, which can be summarized as discouragement. Empowerment and discouragement in this context are defined as subjective experiences of the recipients of care. The importance of seeing the recipient in his or her inner and outer contexts is emphasized in the theory. The inner context involves perceived needs, expectations, previous experiences and sense of self, which in the perspective of the recipient of nursing can be summarized as both a sense of vulnerability and the need for professional caring. The perceived hospital environment comprises the recipient's outer context. It is concluded that nurses and other health professionals can, by theirprofessional caring or lack of it, be powerful sources of empowerment ordiscouragement to those whom they are pledged to serve.

Lalonde, Clint. "The Twitter experience : the role of Twitter in the formation and maintenance of personal learning networks." 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10170/451.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative phenomenological study involving in-depth interviews with seven educators in K-12 and higher education examines the role that the microblogging service Twitter plays in the formation and development of Personal Learning Networks (PLN) among educators. A double hermeneutic data analysis shows that Twitter plays a role in the formation and development of PLNs by allowing educators to; engage in consistent and sustained dialogue with their PLN, access the collective knowledge of their PLN, amplify and promote more complex thoughts and ideas to a large audience, and expand their PLN using features unique to Twitter. This research also examines the nature of a PLN and shows that participants believe their PLN extends beyond their Twitter network to encompass both face-to-face and other ICT mediated relationships. Secondary research questions examine how Twitter differs from other social networking tools in mediating relationships within a PLN, what motivates an educator to develop a PLN, how trust is established in a PLN, what the expectations of reciprocity are within a PLN, and what is the nature of informal learning within a PLN. Keywords: Twitter, microblogging, Personal Learning Network, PLN, informal learning

Abstract:
Yukon is unique in Canada for its four orders of government—federal, territorial, First Nation and municipal. Determining the differences in communication characteristics, strategies, mechanisms, and processes of the governments can assist with effective communication among them, leading to new opportunities. Interviews with 20 participants representing elected, appointed, and senior staff positions from four orders of government extracted thoughts and experiences on intergovernmental communication through the phenomenological tradition. Strong internal communication complements effective external communication; government individuals do not understand all the structures and processes of other governments, but instead make assumptions that can create friction and conflict while a sincere desire to improve communication is evident. Lack of time, capacity, and knowledge are contributing factors to poor communication efforts. Interpersonal communication is the key to establishing stronger relationships and rebuilding trust. Recent self-government status for Yukon‘s First Nations provides opportunities for expansion and inclusiveness of intergovernmental communication. Key words: intergovernmental communication, interpersonal communication, Yukon governments, relationships.

Abstract:
This descriptive, phenomenological case study presents the perspectives of small-scale coffee producers in Guatemala regarding cooperative membership, sustainable coffee certification programs and the role of ANACAFE. The viewpoints of two producer cooperatives are described based on participant observation, semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Through content analysis the transcribed data were categorized and summarized, and emergent themes are discussed. Advantages to cooperative membership include access to finances, information, cost sharing and expanding direct-trade relationships. Challenges identified are securing finances and attracting new membership. Certification programs may be desirable, but access to information regarding program types is limited. Participants feel that standards do not reflect cultural differences, and the producers question who actually receives the advertised price premiums. The use of best-practices incorporating the social, environmental and economic principles of certification programs is preferred. ANACAFE is a source of technical information and funding but resource access is selective and limited.

Abstract:
The objectives of this dissertation thesis could be divided into two primary analytical- interpretation areas. The first one would be trying to define the starting position of visual anthropology based on current trends in order to think about the active ingredients that discipline bases its knowledge and research. The image and sound penetrate our world to such an extent that it is necessary to reflect on the role that space plays in our life and how it is necessary to continue to work with these audiovisual principles in visual anthropology. At the same time, virtual and digital ethnography focuses our attention on changing the nature of our terrain, which needs to be taken into account immediately in our research. In some audio-visual projects I try to reflect different analytical-interpretative approaches and methods. In the project "Musicians" I ask questions how to process the theme of folk musicians from northeastern Slovakia, whose representations appear in a world full of openness, interconnection and sharing. In the experimental film project Watching Last Judgment I try to find ways to mediate sensory experience in a specific space connecting the sacred and profane places of the historic monastery in Voronet, Romania. In the last project I devote my analytical reasoning to this...

Horton, Janell M. "Exploring the cultural experiences of family case managers : an interpretative phenomenological analysis." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/4034.

Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
This study explored the lived experiences of family case managers who routinely work with families who are culturally different from themselves. The purpose was to understand and interpret the meaning of culture and cultural difference as it relates to the engagement process with families. The research also sought to understand whether cultural insensitivity or bias may contribute to the overrepresentation of children of color in the child welfare system. The author conducted 10 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with graduates of a large, research-intensive Midwestern university’s Title-IV-E Social Work Program, who also were employed as family case managers in public child welfare. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and the analytic process of the hermeneutic circle. Results suggest the concept of culture is a complex term that encompasses many characteristics and a number of dimensions. In addition, four themes were identified as underlying the engagement process with culturally different families. These themes routinely overlapped, and family case managers often had to attend to each of the thematic areas simultaneously. At nearly every step in the engagement process, family case managers modulated their interactions in order to find balance and stability in their relationship with the family. Finally, poverty was revealed to be the most salient cultural difference in working with families involved in the child welfare system. These results have important implications for social work education, child welfare practice, and research on the overrepresentation of children of color in the child welfare system.

Film Phenomenology and Adaptation: Sensuous Elaboration argues that in order to make sense of film adaptation, we must first apprehend their sensual form. Across its chapters, this book brings the philosophy and research methodology of phenomenology into contact with adaptation studies, examining how vision, hearing, touch, and the structures of the embodied imagination and memory thicken and make tangible an adaptation’s source. In doing so, this book not only conceives adaptation as an intertextual layering of source material and adaptation, but also an intersubjective and textural experience that includes the materiality of the body.

Abstract:
AbstractThe previous chapters explored how four (interacting and overlapping) continental approaches (dialectics, dialectical materialism, psychoanalysis and phenomenology) offer hints and guidance for coming to terms with the revolutionary dynamics and disruptive impact of contemporary technoscience. Hegelian dialectics provides a conceptual scaffold for developing a comprehensive view of the terrestrial system and even for addressing the Cambrian explosion currently unfolding in laboratories around the globe, as a result of technoscientific developments such as synthetic biology and CRISP-Cas9. Dialectical materialism likewise offers a conceptual framework for addressing the rapidly aggravating disruption of the metabolism between nature and global civilisation, and the ongoing convergence of biosphere and technosphere, exemplified by the synthetic cell. Francophone psychoanalysis, closely aligned with dialectical thinking, adds to our understanding of the specificity of technoscience, both as a practice and as a discourse, where technoscientific research emerges as a questionable vocation driven by a desire to control, but at the same time ostensibly out of control. The dialectical methodology of psychoanalysis was exemplified with the help of case histories, moreover, involving Majorana particles, gene drives, malaria mosquitoes and nude mice. The latter represent technoscientific commodities, exemplifying the assembly-line production of human-made organisms (the commodification of life as such). Subsequently, we demonstrated how Heideggerian phenomenology entails important methodological hints for understanding technoscientific artefacts against the backdrop of technoscience as a mobilising force and as a global enterprise. And finally, we outlined how Teilhard’s views on the genesis of consciousness, self-consciousness and hyperconsciousness retrieve the historical (dialectical) dimension of phenomenology, thus allowing us to assess the present as a global unfolding of the noosphere.

In this chapter, the qualitative research methodology known as hermeneutic phenomenology was explored beginning with a brief historical overview of phenomenology and hermeneutic phenomenology followed by a conceptualization of hermeneutic phenomenology. As elements of the hermeneutic phenomenological research process were explored, practical applications were provided as exemplars of each component of the process including participant selection, the hermeneutic circle, forestructures, data collection, management, and analysis. These application exemplars were presented in italics and labeled as applications. Attempts were made to contextualize the methodology in ways understandable to doctoral students seeking a methodological framework within which to situate their own research. Finally, sample completed studies utilizing hermeneutic phenomenology were referenced.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an insight into the origins and traditions of phenomenology as both philosophy and methodology. Emphasis is placed in the earlier parts of the chapter on the delineation between Husserl and Heidegger, the forefathers of the discipline, whose work into epistemology and ontology have fundamentally shaped contemporary qualitative research. Understanding the key concepts of epoché and the implications of the ‘self' within phenomenological research are explicated so that the reader can consider the practicalities of whether it is possible to suspend presupposition and epistemic bias, or whether the ‘self' is something that has simply to be acknowledged as having a fundamental relevance to what and how interpretation is undertaken and how this has a consequent and tangible impact on research findings. The latter part of the chapter gives an insight into interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) as one contemporary approach to the integration of phenomenological research methods.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to extend the current body of knowledge about phenomenological research methodologies. By focusing exclusively on the Husserlian-oriented descriptive phenomenological methodology, (1) the authors will first provide a brief introduction to Husserl's phenomenology. (2) They will then give a thorough delineation of Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological psychological methodology, which is underpinned by Husserl's phenomenological philosophy. They will subsequently describe in detail methods of data gathering and the method of data analysis of this phenomenological methodology. (3) Finally, they will borrow raw data from published empirical research to demonstrate the application of this data analysis method.

Abstract:
The problem of the study is that it is not sufficiently studied what psychological barriers people face at the initial stage of professional activity as self-employed. The aim of the study is to study the features of psychological barriers at the initial stage of professional activity of self-employed people. Research hypothesis: at the initial stage of professional activity as self-employed people face psychological barriers in the organizational and creative areas of entrepreneurial activity. The problem of psychological barriers was considered in their works by S. Rubinstein, N. Podymov, I. Pavlov, R. Shakurov and others. The article formulates particular definitions of the main concepts. Methodology: analysis of an individual case using interviews with processing in the framework of interpretive phenomenology. Respondent: female, 34 years old, self-employed as a psychologist for 1 year. Results: psychological barrier of accepting financial responsibility, barrier of adherence to a certain professional culture, barrier of competence in the profession. Certain psychological barriers can arise in connection with certain underlying medical conditions. The conclusions are that psychological barriers are a complex mental education, can be overcome in stages, and motivation of the subject is important for overcoming barriers.

Abstract:
In the act of caring, it was widely disseminated as important lookingat the person being cared for and the needs that could be revealedin the construction of the relationship throughout the care process with the caregiver. In this research, our gaze is directed to the caregiver, making it possible to enablewhich meanings, values and beliefs are presentedin the conduct of their lives and how thedialogue with the current speechesin society try to capture them from modelsthat obscure the production of their subjectivity. In this regard, human relationships can be created and always recreated, and any dogmatic forms of relationship can produce limitations of meaning and existential suffering. As a general objective, we sought to understand the production of subjectivity of the caregiver of people with disabilities in the encounter with the disabled subject to be cared for. As specific objectives, to analyze the meanings that permeate the relationship between the caregiver and the person with a disability, in addition to investigatethe meanings unveiled in work relationships and in the affectiverelationships between the caregiver and the person with a disability. The specific objectives analyze the meanings related to the work relationship and affection that goesthrough the crossingswith a care character. In this way, families received specialattention, as many caregivers are family members, withoutdisregardingthe importance of professionals hired to exercise the role of caregiver. With regard to methodology, the guiding methods of the research were Cartography and Phenomenology, using semi-open interviews, as well as a systematic literature review. Ten interviews were produced frompeople of the professional field tocaregivers whose familymembers demanded care due to being disabled. It was possible to noticeresults about the phenomenonand singularities of the established relationshipsthat care implied in a deep existential investment by all respondents, both those who proposed to be involved by job function and those which life directed them in favor of a family member or close person. The speeches that initially seemed well structured, gradually unveiled meanings that indicated a deep regret for the suffering and the severe condition of limitation of the person to be cared for. The searchingfor meaning went beyond mere rationality, and spirituality became a key element in the attempt to nurture existential anxieties. Several participants emphasized that despite the constant physical fatigue and emotional exhaustion, consideringthe complexity of each case in particular, the satisfaction of being able to help, reciprocate or even be useful by applying care made this relationship lighter and more meaningful. Contradictory feelings such as love and a feeling that the caregiver's life is paralyzed, due to the dedication to the person to becared for, clearly emerged

Abstract:
The article deals with the results of the research aimed at the improvement of methodology of use of augmented reality for the development of health preserving competence of a Physical Education teacher under conditions of post-graduate education. From the point of Umwelt phenomenology, augmented reality is characterized by correspondence to nature, its cognitive, metaphoric, diverse, interactive, anthropomorphic nature. The article analyzes the vectors of using augmented reality in the professional activity of a Physical Education teacher, particularly the one that is aimed at health preservation. The software that may be used with this purpose has been described. The attitude of Physical Education teachers to the use of the augmented reality for preserving their students’ health and development of their motion skills, intellect and creativity was determined in the research. The results of the survey show that the majority of teachers positively react to the idea of using augmented reality in their professional activity. However, in some cases, not a fully formed understanding of this issue was observed. The ways of solving the stated problem could be the inclusion of augmented technologies’ techniques into the process of post-graduate education, taking into consideration the anthropological, ethical, cultural contexts as well as teacher involvement in the stated process.
