Mohammed, Arif. "Applying laser irradiation and intelligent concepts to identify grinding phenomena." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12675/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research discussed in this thesis explores a new method for the detection of grinding burn temperature using a laser irradiation acoustic emission (AE) sensing technique. This method is applicable for the grinding process monitoring system, providing an early warning for burn detection on metal alloy based materials (specifically nickel alloy based materials: Inconel718 and MarM002). The novelty in this research is the laser irradiation induced thermal AE signal that represents the grinding thermal behaviour and can be used for grinding burn detection. <p> Today, there is a need to implement a proper design of an adequate surveillance system that detects and categorizes explosion phenomena in order to identify the explosion risk to reduce its impact through mitigation and preparedness. This dissertation introduces state-of-the-art classification of explosion phenomena through pattern recognition techniques on color images. Consequently, we present a novel taxonomy for explosion phenomena. In particular, we demonstrate different aspects of volcanic eruptions and nuclear explosions of the proposed taxonomy that include scientific formation, re

The intention behind this research was to reveal through two interpretive, inter-related studies the perceived needs of differently-labelled youth, collectively addressed in this thesis as ‘the New Generations’, exploring potentially viable ways of working with them in education. The first study focused on youth labelled Indigos, and the second study focused on exploring a possible way of working with the New Generations according to experienced teachers. Both studies drew on lived experience and opinions of educators who have acquired extensive experience respectively with the Indigo phenomen

Abstract:
This thesis takes place in the field of Ambient Intelligence (AmI). AmI Systems are interactive systems composed of many heterogeneous components. From a hardware perspective these components can be divided into two main classes: sensors, using which the system observes its surroundings, and actuators, through which the system acts upon its surroundings in order to execute specific tasks. From a functional point of view, the goal of AmI Systems is to activate some actuators, based on data provided by some sensors. However, sensors and actuators may suffer failures. Our motivation in this thesis

Full text
Abstract:
A stochastic-delay differential equation (SDDE) model of a small neural network with recurrent inhibition is presented and analyzed. The model exhibits unexpected transient behavior: oscillations that occur at the boundary of the basins of attraction when the system is bistable. These are known as delay-induced transitory oscillations (DITOs). This behavior is analyzed in the context of stochastic resonance, an unintuitive, though widely researched phenomenon in physical bistable systems where noise can play in constructive role in strengthening an input signal.
