Switching phenomenon of the bathtub vortex in a double-orifice water tank is experimentally investigated. This alternation between “vortexflow” and “nonvortex flow” is caused by flow rate differences through the two orifices. A linear relationship is obtained between the frequency and the flow rate difference.

Abstract:
Turbulent macro-instabilities in the process of mixing in cylindrical baffled vessel provided with pitched blade impeller were studied. Rules of macro-instability occurrence were investigated in their dependence on physical parameters of three Newtonian liquids mixed and on the regime of mixing. The observations were realized partly visually, partly by means of a specially designed mechanical measuring device connected with an electronic recorder indicating the manifestations of instability in the liquid.

Russia is the only country in the G20 group of nations where Donald Trump is the preferred choice for the next President of the United States. This article examines a hypothesis that Trump owes his popularity in Russia to the way Russian media frames his image. The media content was analyzed by quantitative parameters and then, these parameters were further complimented with a discourse analysis which, in addition to examining the texts themselves, also appeals to the reality beyond the texts, including social and political circumstances that surround the issue. The results demonstrate that th

The authors analyze street-level corruption as a complex criminological phenomenon. They use the methods of statistical, comparative law and correlation analysis to examine the dynamics of street-level bribery, outline its conceptual borders and identify the key criminological parameters and characteristics of bribery. The presented corruption indicators (street-level corruption type, corruption-infestation index of state and local authorities, structure of bribery and transactional costs index) make it possible to widen the borders of criminological research of street-level bribery, introduce

In this paper we introduce a variation on Glaser's method for determining the shape of the failure rate function of a mixture. It has often been seen that the shape of the failure rate depends on the mixing parameter q. Our method provides an explanation for this phenomenon. We then illustrate our technique with the mixture of an exponential and a gamma density for all possible cases.

Excessive scaling is one of the main nuisances in relation to the use of drinking water. Ever more water companies try to minimise scaling. Although scaling is an old problem, prediction of scaling has been proven to be very tricky. Traditionally, the (Langelier) Saturation Index is used to evaluate scaling properties of drinking water. From experience it is well known that this parameter is not suitable for proper prediction. New parameters have been developed and standardised for scaling prediction, namely the Calcium Carbonate Precipitation Potential, calculated at a temperature of 90°C (CC

Abstract:
Frieze patterns (in the sense of Conway and Coxeter) are related to cluster algebras of type A and to signed continuant polynomials. In view of studying certain classes of cluster algebras with coefficients, we extend the concept of signed continuant polynomial to define a new family of friezes, called c-friezes, which generalises frieze patterns. Having in mind the cluster algebras of finite type, we identify a necessary and sufficient condition for obtaining periodic c-friezes. Taking into account the Laurent phenomenon and the positivity conjecture, we present ways of generating c-friezes o
