Hawthorne, John, and Ofra Magidor. Reflections on the Ideology of Reasons. Edited by Daniel Star. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199657889.013.6.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter we offer a series of reflections on the ideology of reasons. Among the normative reasons for an agent X to phi, it is common to distinguish between those reasons that the agent possesses and those which she does not. After some background (5.1), we argue (5.2) that possession of a reason requires knowledge. In 5.3, we argue, first, that the normative reason construction is factive, and second, that possession ascriptions can be factored into a normative reason construction and a possession claim. In 5.4, we compare two prominent views concerning the nature of normative reasons: those of Kearns and Star and of John Broome. While both views have significant merit, we argue that they also face some non-trivial challenges, and discuss a range of considerations that can help to adjudicate between these two conceptions.

Danilov, V. M. Non-stationarity of Open Star Clusters. Ural University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.15826/b978-5-7996-3173-4.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph poses issues related to the study of the non-stationarity of open star clusters (OSCs), starting with an analysis of the properties of the trajectories of individual stars to the study of collective motion of stars. A discussion of the dynamics of correlations and wave processes in such clusters is presented. The mechanisms of the dynamic evolution of OSCs, the gravitational instability of OSC nuclei, the spectra of frequencies and wavenumbers for oscillations of numerical models of OSCs, astrophysical applications of the results of studies of the dynamics of OSCs are considered. We address the monograph to academic researchers (astronomers and physicists) who are interested in astrophysics, the dynamics of stellar systems, and PhD and senior students of relevant specialities.

Liao, Ping-hui. Travels in Modern China. Edited by Carlos Rojas and Andrea Bachner. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199383313.013.2.

Full text
Abstract:
Travels in modern China are not only about displacement and exile, but are in many ways informed by a complicated sense of inadequacy and betrayal, as the desire to stay close (or return) to the fatherland is constantly frustrated and negated. This chapter argues that modern Chinese intellectuals and writers—belated but nevertheless ubiquitous and mobile travelers—are often shaped by a profound sense of psychosocial deprivation, reluctance, and loss, rather than of empowerment or recreational escape. The chapter begins with Zhang Taiyan’s short visit to Taiwan and his ensuing journey to Japan, when his project to modernize the Qing Empire failed, and traces the trajectories of several Chinese writers who followed such a critical path, such as Lu Xun, Xiao Hong, Eileen Chang, Pai Hsien-yong, Ha Jin, and Gao Xingjian.

Abstract:
Mississippi is the only state in the country to have a proposal for an exchange rejected by the federal government. This was a fascinating outcome considering how badly the Obama administration wanted Republican-led states to run their own exchanges. The debate in Mississippi was unique because an independently elected Republican insurance commissioner believed he could establish an exchange without his governor’s support. It seemed he would be able to—until the Tea Party joined the fight, with the support of national and state-level conservative think tanks. They made their presence felt at obscure meetings in highly technical parts of the process. Fellow-Republican Governor Phil Bryant then put his foot down and said no exchange would be created in Mississippi without his support. The Obama administration may have been tempted to approve the exchange anyway, but decided to stay out of the intrastate fight.

Abstract:
This research aims to study the presents hymns in the corpus paulinum (Phil 2,6-11; Col 1,15-20; Eph 1,3-14) from its sitz im leben cultic, and considering the relationship between Scripture and liturgy in the early christian community. The research will start from the observation of the presence of hymns in the religions of the peoples of the ancient Near East, through Israel and the Hellas, until the early Church. Although the forms are taken up, the New Testament hymns differ themselves from their predecessors as its core content: the Christ event. So, it is considered will each of the hymns in its christological reference in the context of pauline theology. Finally, will be analyzed the presence of these hymns in the roman Liturgy current, identifying each of the celebrative contexts in which these hymns are present, whether as a prayer of praise addressed to God, either as exhortation to the community. Hymns thus express that double movement that defines every liturgical action: the glorification of God and the sanctification of man

Jacquemyn, Yves, and Anneke Kwee. Antenatal and intrapartum fetal evaluation. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198713333.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
Antenatal and intrapartum fetal monitoring aim to identify the beginning of the process of fetal hypoxia before irreversible fetal damage has taken place. Fetal movement counting by the mother has not been reported to be of any benefit. The biophysical profile score, incorporating ultrasound and fetal heart rate monitoring, has not been proven to reduce perinatal mortality in randomized trials. Doppler ultrasound allows the exploration of the perfusion of different fetal organ systems and provides data on possible hypoxia and fetal anaemia. Maternal uterine artery Doppler can be used to select women with a high risk for intrauterine growth restriction and pre-eclampsia but does not directly provide information on fetal status. Umbilical artery Doppler has been shown to reduce perinatal mortality significantly in high-risk pregnancies (but not in low-risk women). Adding middle cerebral artery Doppler to umbilical artery Doppler does not increase accuracy for detecting adverse perinatal outcome. Ductus venosus Doppler demonstrates moderate value in diagnosing fetal compromise; it is not known whether its use adds any value to umbilical artery Doppler alone. Cardiotocography (CTG) reflects the interaction between the fetal brain and peripheral cardiovascular system. Prelabour routine use of CTG in low-risk pregnancies has not been proven to improve outcome; computerized CTG significantly reduces perinatal mortality in high-risk pregnancies. Monitoring the fetus during labour with intermittent auscultation has not been compared to no monitoring at all; when compared with CTG no difference in perinatal mortality or cerebral palsy has been noted. CTG does lower neonatal seizures and is accompanied by a statistically non-significant rise in caesarean delivery. Fetal blood sampling to detect fetal pH and base deficit lowers caesarean delivery rate and neonatal convulsions when used in adjunct to CTG. Determination of fetal scalp lactate has not been shown to have an effect on neonatal outcome or on the rate of instrumental deliveries but is less often hampered by technical failure than fetal scalp pH. Analysis of the ST segment of the fetal ECG (STAN®) in combination with CTG during labour results in fewer vaginal operative deliveries, less need for neonatal intensive care, and less use of fetal blood sampling during labour, without a change in fetal metabolic acidosis when compared to CTG alone.
