Full text
Abstract:
Archophileurus spinosus Dechambre, 2006, a South American Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Phileurini) is recorded for the first time in Europe (Apulia, Italy). This species, which may have colonized the Italian peninsula in recent past and that could still be in the acclimatization phase, represents the first record of tribe Phileurini in Europe and the second case worldwide of interception of this genus outside its area of origin. After a brief presentation of the site and collecting conditions of the specimens, we discuss the possible threats for local biodiversity and agriculture that the establishment of A. spinosus could cause.

Abstract:
The third instar larvae and the pupae of Platyphileurus felscheanus Ohaus, 1910 (Phileurini), recently synonymized with Surutu jelineki Endrődi, 1975 (Cyclocephalini), are described and illustrated, and some life history information is given. The larvae were collected and reared in bromeliads in rain forests of Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil. The systematic position of this monotypic genus is reassessed at the tribe level by considering larval and adult morphological characters. Both character sets, being described and illustrated, suggest the placement of Platyphileurus in the tribe Oryctini.

The names of three genera of Dynastinae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) are reviewed. The New Guinea genus Beckius Dechambre, 1992 (Dynastini) is preoccupied, and Debeckius Allsopp, new replacement name, is proposed. This results in Debeckius beccarii beccarii (Gestro, 1876), new combination, Debeckius beccarii koletta (Voirin, 1978), new combination, and Debeckius beccarii ryusuii (Nagai, 2006), new combination. The African genus Syrictes Prell, 1936 (Phileurini) is preoccupied, and Kirprellius Allsopp, new combination, is proposed. This results in Kirprellius curvicornus (Endrődi, 1977), new combination, Kirprellius dentatus (Prell, 1912), new combination, Kirprellius marceaui (Bouyer, 2020), new combination, Kirprellius rugulosus (Dupuis, 2013), new combination, and Kirprellius syrichtus (Fabricius, 1775), new combination. “Neoryctes Sclater, 1891” (Mammalia) is shown to be an invalid name and Neoryctes Arrow, 1908 (Pentodontini) remains the valid name for a dynastine genus from the Galápagos Islands, and Notoryctes Stirling, 1891 remains valid for the Australian marsupial moles.

Abstract:
A second species of Amblyodus Westwood, 1878, A. castroi sp. n., is described from the northern South America based on 12 specimens from Brazil and Peru (Amazonian subregion). The new species is here compared with the type species of the genus, A. taurus Westwood, 1878 and both species and their male genitalia are illustrated. Diagnostic characters for the genus are discussed, especially the metatibial teeth. A distribution map including the type species and the new species is provided. The genus Amblyodus is recorded for the first time from Peru and from Brazil states of Pará and Rondônia.

Abstract:
It was observed that Phileurus valgus larvae are capable to emit stridulation and forced air sound when disturbed, being able to emit a “compound sound”. Duration, frequencies, oscillograms, spectrograms of the sounds obtained are presented. The results obtained are compared with previous studies and the possible communicative or warning functions they may have in their natural environment when interacting with other larvae (other species) or their congeners (same species). The audios obtained in the study are shared.

Abstract:
The genus Oryctophileurus is reviewed and its validity is supported by a combination of the following apomorphic characters: a single cephalic horn with lateral carina, pronotal cavity with ocellate punctures and two teeth or tubercles close behind the anterior pronotal margin. The male of Oryctophileurus varicosus Prell, 1934, is described for the first time. A new species, Oryctophileurus guerrai Perger & Grossi sp. n., from subhumid Tucuman-Bolivian forest in the Southern Bolivian Andes is described. The new species is distinguished from its closest relative, O. armicollis Prell, 1911, by a narrower distance between the inner teeth of the dorsal pronotal protuberances and a reduced area of weakly developed ocellate punctures above the posterolateral pronotal margin. The occurrence of Oryctophileurus species in areas of endemism along the eastern slope of the tropical Andes suggests that these populations represent biogeographic “relicts”, and the discovery of Oryctophileurus guerrai sp. n. in the southern Bolivian Andes suggests that this area is underrated with respect to insect diversity and endemism.

Abstract:
The 22 genera of New World Phileurini are briefly reviewed and characterized, and English and Spanish keys to all the genera are provided for the first time, thus facilitating generic identifications. Chiliphileurus Endrödi (a junior synonym of the Asian genus Eophileurus Arrow), Moraguesia Dechambre (transferred to Oxyligyrus Arrow in the tribe Pentodontini), and Platyphileurus Ohaus (transferred to the tribe Oryctini) are no longer part of the New World phileurine fauna. The monobasic Phileucourtus Dechambre is considered a junior synonym of Hemiphileurus Kolbe.
