Abstract:

The Air Power theories of today are often written from a superior air force perspective where the overall focus is on the offensive nature of Air Power. Very little is spoken about Air Power and its defensive role as well as the inferior states opportunities against superior opponents. A state that successfully has used Air Power through history is Israel. During both the Six Day War in 1967 and Yom Kippur in 1973, Israel faced superior opponents consisting of a coalition of Arab states, including Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq. Despite Israel being the initially inferior state during both wars, they managed to gain initiative against the superior Arab states. This study will set the Air Power theories of Philip S Meilinger to a test through a validation process against two cases, the Six Day War in 1967 and Yom Kippur in 1973. The aim is to analyse the Israeli air force during these two wars. The main goal is to try to explain how inferior states can succeed against superior opponents through Air Power. The result of the study demonstrates that an inferior state has the opportunity to achieve success through Air Power against superior opponents. The analyses of Meilingers theories indicates that high readiness, early employment of forces, use of Air Powers psychological effect and timing constitutes successful factors in gaining initiative. An additional important factor for achieving success through these variables is highly relevant intelligence.

Abstract:

This study examines how Argentina’s failure to obtain control of the air during the Falklands war can be explained based on the theories of John A. Warden and Philip S. Meilinger. The failure is problematic due to the numerical superiority and geographical advantage of the Argentinian Air Force. Previous studies have focused on the absence of airborne early warning, air-to-sea warfare and the perspective of Clausewitz theories. The purpose of this study is therefore the to develop a theory-based explanation of the Argentinian failure from the perspective of two air-warfare theories. The first day of the war (May 1) and the landing on the shores of San Carlos constitute crucial parts of the air war. The paper utilizes a theory consuming approach to explain the two cases and then comparing them to develop an aggregated explanation of the Argentinian failure. The result of the analysis is that Argentinian failure to identify and attack Britain’s aircraft carriers/landing ships, failure to concentrate the offensive operations and selective British air defence are key parts of the explanation. The results contributes to a deeper understanding of a perspective of the Falklands air war that has not been analysed in previously analysed in earlier academic studies.

Abstract:

Speculative fiction allows an expanded view of literature and so allows scholars to explore new boundaries in the way words and ideas work. In the titular character of The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, the reader sees an expansion of self through liminality while A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick explores its collapse. In order to portray each of these the character examined must move though one seems to move upward and the other downward. This idea of movement is only part of what expands the idea of liminality past the traditional idea of a doorway to create a hallway that the character might traverse on the way from place to place. This is not a redefinition of the term but a revision, a change in the way that we look at the concept as we accept and explore newer genres.

Abstract:

In the course of this work, examples of early baroque ornamentation extracted from historical vocal treatises will be applied to Philipp Friedrich Böddecker's "Sonata sopra 'La Monica.'" This study will demonstrate that Böddecker's sonata for bassoon and basso continuo is derived from a popular vocal tune of the 17th century and therefore an informed early baroque instrumental performance practice for this work can be extracted from early Baroque Era vocal performance treatises. Additionally, testimonies from authentic performance practices of the early Baroque Era will be applied to this work in an effort to create a guide to a historically informed performance.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis is responsible for making a critical edition of two Spanish manuscripts, namely: the codex escurialense J.I.6 and the testimony BNE 17638, which we keep of the historiographical work of the French author Philippe de Commynes (1477-1511), known as the Mémoires. Although, not only it is dedicated to present a critical edition of the first part of this great work, but also it aims to carry out a social, cultural, historical, political and, of course, philological and ecdotic study of the mentioned text. Therefore, the thesis is divided into two volumes: on the one hand, an introductory study on a series of historical, political, social and cultural issues concerning to translations, and, on the other hand, the critical edition of two of the Spanish translations of the work of the historian.
Esta tesis doctoral se ocupa de realizar una edición crítica de dos manuscritos castellanos, a saber: el códice escurialense J.I.6 y el testimonio BNE 17638, que conservamos de la obra historiográfica del autor francés Philippe de Commynes (1477-1511), conocida como las Mémoires. Si bien, no solo se dedica a presentar una edición crítica de la primera parte de esta gran obra, sino que también pretende realizar un estudio social, cultural, histórico, político y, como no, filológico y ecdótico, de dicho texto. Por ello la tesis se divide en dos volúmenes: por una parte, un estudio introductorio sobre una serie de cuestiones históricas, políticas, sociales y culturales que atañen a las traducciones, y, por otra parte, la edición crítica de dos de las traducciones castellanas de la obra del historiador.

Abstract:

Le clergé québécois de la première partie du XXe siècle représente un corps social important. Philippe Desranleau devient membre de cette élite en 1909. Sa carrière presbytérale fait l’objet de la présente recherche et vise à démontrer comment on accède à l’épiscopat au Québec, dans les années 1930-1940. D’origine modeste, le prêtre Desranleau débute sa carrière dans l’enseignement au Séminaire de Saint-Hyacinthe. Puis, il fait une courte expérience en paroisse. Après trois ans de services dans le contexte d’une Église qui favorise une formation accrue de son personnel, il va poursuivre des études supérieures à Rome. Le jeune abbé baigne dans un climat de catholicisme social. De retour au pays, il commence à gravir les échelons en occupant, tour à tour, des fonctions à l’évêché: secrétaire, chancelier, secrétaire général et vicaire général. Après 16 années à l’évêché, Mgr Desranleau se réalise dans le ministère paroissial, à Saint-Pierre de Sorel. Ardent défenseur de la doctrine sociale, il s’engage dans l’établissement des syndicats catholiques. En 1937, son rôle dans les grèves de Sorel le place sur l’avant-scène. Son évêque, Mgr Decelles, l’appuie totalement dans ses prises de position. L’année même, il accède à l’épiscopat, à titre de coadjuteur de Mgr Gagnon, à Sherbrooke. La biographie de Mgr Desranleau, 1882- 1938, illustre les efforts d’une Église qui veut maintenir son pouvoir en s’adaptant au phénomène d’urbanisation

Le missionaire belge pierre-philippe potier s. J. Nota entre 1743 et 1758 plusieurs aspects du parler francais en nouvelle france a la veille de la conquete. Apres avoir presente une esquisse biographique de l'auteur, une description du manuscrit (bibliotheque municipale de montreal, collection gagnon, 447. 9714 p863 fa), une description des versions partielles publiees du manuscrit, et apres avoir donne un apercu des appreciations du manuscrit, nous presentons une version diplomatique du texte. Cette version est suivie d'un regroupement onomasiologique des vocables et d'un index alphabetique des mots et des gloses. Dans la deuxieme partie nous examinons l'orthographe de l'auteur, les aspects phonetiques, morphologiques et syntaxiques releves, les datations nouvelles, le langage familier des jesuites de l'epoque, les emprunts aux langues amerindiennes et les archaismes et regionalismes releves. En appendice nous presentons une esquisse biographique des sources orales citees et une liste des sources ecrites qui y figurent. Une page specimen du manuscrit et quatre cartes completent l'etude
The belgian missionary pierre-philippe potier s. J. Noted certain aspects of the french language in new france between 1743 and 1758. We present a diplomatic edition of his manuscript (bibliotheque municipale de montreal, collection gagnon, 447. 9714 p863 fa), an alphabetical index of the key words and glosses therein and an onomasiological regrouping of these. This is preceeded by an introduction to the author, the manuscript and the various treatments it has received. A second part contains a detailed analysis of the manuscript: the author's orthography; phonetic, morphological and syntactical aspects; new datations found in the text; the language of jesuit colleagues; amerindian borrowings and, finally, archaisms and regionalisms noted. In addition we present biographical sketches of the oral sources cited and list of written sources which figure in the text. A photocopy of a page of the manuscript and four maps are included

The present work has as objective to comprehend fans appropriations and reframing (Jenkins, Hills, Jenson) of the character Cthulhu, Howard Phillips Lovecraft s creation, in the context of cyberculture (L?vy, Manovich, Castells, Santaella). Lovecraft, born in Providence, United States, lived between 1890 and 1937, and wrote short stories and poems on the fantastic genre of literature. His creations survived time, being modified and reinterpreted in different entertainment spheres and, in cyberculture, appropriated by fans in large scale around the world. By the analysis of posts and conversations in the page Cthulhu , on Facebook, it was objectified to comprehend who is the fans Cthulhu. In addition, it was aimed to investigate what would the differences be between these reframings and Lovecraft s short story, The Call of Cthulhu , in a context where the new media and the Social Network Websites amplify and facilitate content s production methods and its propagation among the fandom. The methodologies chosen were the documental analysis and the conversation analysis in social media, being done together and later on related with the theoretical approaches chosen. Through the research, the character, before a terrible and irrational monster, gained from the fans personality, human traits, merged with memes and transcended its purpose beyond the original short story destroying humanity -, becoming a socializing creature.
O presente trabalho tem por objetivo compreender as apropria??es e ressignifica??es de f?s (Jenkins, Hills, Jenson) acerca do personagem Cthulhu, cria??o de Howard Phillips Lovecraft, no contexto da cibercultura (L?vy, Manovich, Castells, Santaella). Lovecraft, nascido em Providence, Estados Unidos, viveu entre 1890 e 1937, e escreveu contos e poemas do g?nero da literatura fant?stica. Suas cria??es sobreviveram ao tempo, sendo modificadas e reinterpretadas em diversas esferas do entretenimento e, na cibercultura, apropriadas pelos f?s em grande escala ao redor do mundo. Por meio da an?lise de postagens e conversa??es dentro da p?gina Cthulhu, no Facebook, objetivou-se compreender quem ? o Cthulhu dos f?s. Tamb?m, desejou-se investigar quais seriam as diferen?as entre essas ressignifica??es para o conto de Lovecraft, O Chamado de Cthulhu, em um contexto onde as novas m?dias e os Sites de Redes Sociais amplificam e facilitam as formas de produ??o e difus?o de conte?do entre o fandom. As metodologias escolhidas foram a an?lise documental e a an?lise de conversa??o em redes sociais, sendo realizadas em conjunto e relacionadas posteriormente com os aportes te?ricos escolhidos. Por meio da pesquisa constatou-se que o personagem, antes um monstro tem?vel e irracional, ganhou dos f?s personalidade, tra?os humanos, fundiu-se a memes e transcendeu seu prop?sito al?m do conto original o de destruir a humanidade -, tornando-se uma criatura socializante.

Abstract:

Cette thèse a pour objet le fonctionnement du gouvernement par conseils, appelé polysynodie, installé par Philippe d’Orléans en 1715. Il s’agit également de voir si cette forme de gouvernement constitue une véritable rupture avec le système ministériel louis-quatorzien et de réfléchir sur la nature du pouvoir politique en temps de régence. Dans un premier temps, cette enquête analyse la création du gouvernement par conseils en examinant les travaux et les institutions qui ont inspiré ce système, les circonstances de sa mise en place et en présentant ses différents acteurs. Dans un deuxième temps, le travail quotidien des conseils et les pratiques gouvernementales propres à la polysynodie sont mis en évidence. La troisième partie dresse enfin un bilan de la polysynodie en revenant sur l’œuvre accomplie par les conseils et en tentant d’en montrer l’originalité et les apports éventuels à la culture politique française. Il ressort que loin d’être une expérience insolite, une parenthèse dans l’histoire de la monarchie absolue, la polysynodie constitue un aménagement temporaire des institutions monarchiques, nécessaire en période de régence
This study deals with the subject of government by councils, also called polysynody, which has been created by Philippe d’Orleans in 1715. It also tries to define if this governement breaks down with Louis XIV’s institutions and constitutes an analysis on political power during regency. Firstly, we examine the creation of this governement by studying the works who have inspired it, the circumstances of its installation and its members. The second part presents the work of the councils and their administrative procedures. Then, we evaluate this experiment and try to appreciate its originality and innovations. Our conclusion demonstrates that, far from being an anomaly, a parenthesis in the history of absolute monarchy, polysynody constitutes a temporary evolution which is unavoidable during regency

Abstract:

Este documento evalúa la estabilidad de la Curva de Phillips Neokey- nesiana, la IS dinámica y una Regla de Taylor derivada por Gali y Monacelli (2005) para una economía pequeña y abierta. Para Perú 2003:M8 2012:M2, se aplicó la metodología de Bai y Perron (2003) para estimar las fechas de quiebre y evaluar la estabilidad de las rela- ciones entre la in ación doméstica, el gap del producto y la tasa de interés de referencia (modelo estructural); y la técnica de Qu y Per- ron (2007) para estimar las fechas de cambio de régimen del equilibrio dinámico (modelo reducido). El cambio en el vector de parámetros de la regla de política (enero-2006 y mayo-2009), la Curva de Phillips (enero-2008) y la IS dinámica (octubre-2008) evidencia que la variación de la política monetaria induce un cambio rezagado en la ecuación de mercado debido a la fricciones existentes en la economía peruana. Asimismo, los quiebres en el modelo reducido (mayo-2008 y mayo-2010) muestran que las variables forward looking cambian en dos oportu- nidades posiblemente con el n de garantizar una senda convergente hacia un nuevo equilibrio. Los resultados tanto del modelo estructural como reducido evidencian que el canal de las expectativas aumenta desde el año 2008 y, consecuentemente, la política monetaria a través de la Curva de Phillips puede controlar más fácil la in ación doméstica mediante una Regla de Taylor simple.
