Abstract:
Four vernacular advice books were dedicated to King Charles VI (r. 1380- 1422) during his reign. Charles became king at the age of eleven, and both Philippe de Mézières’ Songe du vieil pelerin and Honorat Bovet’s Arbre des batailles were dedicated to him in 1389, a year after his declaration of personal rule at the age of twenty. Charles VI began suffering from intermittent periods of mental illness from 1392 until his death. Both Christine de Pizan’s Chemin de long estude (1402-3) and Pierre Salmon’s Dialogues (1409, with a second version in 1412-15) were dedicated to him during this period. The four books suggested solutions to problems posed by the king’s minority and later mental illness, as well as other political concerns including the papal schism, the Anglo-French wars, and the conflicts between the king’s relatives that eventually descended into civil war. Although they have been described as belonging to the modern category of “mirrors for princes,” these books are united more by their common dedication to Charles than by their conformity to a modern understanding of genre. The books’ textual contents and their manuscript images, layout, and circulation demonstrate the importance of the dedication to the construction of their messages. The books’ intended audiences included the king as well as other members of his government and in particular his relatives. The writers authorized their advice by stressing the importance of books and their own credentials, especially their goodwill towards and relationship with the king. They adapted familiar discussions of kingship to suggest concrete solutions to the crises in France, and to urge the king’s relatives to work together to support Charles instead of fighting amongst themselves. The later manuscript circulation of these books demonstrates how such a dedication could be adapted for new audiences in different political circumstances.

Dans cette thèse nous voudrions mener une étude approfondie sur le Songe du Vieil Pelerin (1389) de Philippe de Mézières concernant la structure complexe de ce voyage allégorique-didactique, ses facteurs de cohérence et cohésion qui font son principe d’unité, l’utilisation de certaines sources ainsi que sa réception auprès du public. Notre but est de mieux éclairer le procès de construction de ce texte, la posture de l’auteur et la place du Songe dans le contexte littéraire de la fin du XIVème siècle. Notre étude commence par une analyse détaillée du prologue. C’est là que Philippe de Mézières fournit les clés de lecture de son œuvre et qu’il met en place la réflexion sur le problème de la vérité: vérité spirituelle, morale ou encore verbale, et donc liée à un modèle rhétorique précis, enfin vérité de l’œuvre, de contenus qui y sont véhiculés et authenticité de l’écriture. Ce problème constitue un fil rouge qui traverse tout l’itinéraire accompli par le pèlerin, dans le récit, ainsi que les parenthèses didactiques ou digressives qui le parsèment, comme nous essayons de montrer dans la partie centrale de notre étude.Enfin, nous choisissons deux canaux langagiers bien définis et privilégiés dans le tissu discursif et narratif du Songe, la polémique et la pénitence, pour analyser plus en détail comment le modèle rhétorique proposé par l’auteur peut être le premier pas vers la voie d’un renouvellement social et spirituel<br>This research presents a thorough study on the Songe du Vieil Pelerin focused on four aspects: the complex structure of the allegorical-didactic journey described by Philippe de Mezieres; the internal coherence and cohesion that contribute to the unity of the text; the use of sources and the critical reception by Mezieres' contemporaries. From a general standpoint, the main goal of this research is to clarify the inner workings of Mezieres' creative endeavour, in order to better understand the place of the Songe in the literary context of the late fourteenth century. The research begins with a detailed analysis of the prologue, where Mezieres provides the keys to understand his work and organizes its reasoning on the problem of truth, distinguishing between a spiritual, moral, and verbal truth. This analysis marks the way of the pilgrim – the Songe main character – throughout Mezieres' work, both in the story and in the frequent didactical digressions. When the pilgrim's path ends, the rethorical model that underlies the entire work is explained with the help of the concepts of polémique and pénitence, to show how Mezieres conceives his work as a first step in the way of a social and spiritual renewal

Dans notre corpus d’étude : La Présentation de Marie au Temple, Les Miracles de Nostre Dame par personnages et Le Mystère de la Passion d’Arnoul Gréban, le personnage de Marie se présente à l’intersection des langues, des genres et des lieux où se réinvente le théâtre. Ces aspects hétérogènes se dissolvent dans la mesure où le personnage de Marie s’ancre dans la logique de la foi chrétienne : au sein de la Vierge fut incarnée la Parole de Dieu qui, sous sa forme humaine, en la personne du Fils, parla aux hommes ; telle est l’affirmation fondamentale du christianisme qui souligne l’importance du Verbe. Néanmoins, les écrits néotestamentaires qui rapportent la parole divine sont discrets sur Marie, tandis que les jeux à sujet religieux donnent à voir et à entendre un personnage caractérisé par un langage théâtral. En écho avec les écrits scripturaires, le personnage de Notre Dame est composé à partir des écrits pieux en latin et en langue vernaculaire, des textes littéraires et rhétoriques, et sous l’influence des réalités sociales. Son personnage est en effet à la confluence de ces courants qu’il transcende et, à leur interstice, il modèle une nouvelle façon d’exprimer la foi à laquelle la forme dramatique donne une dimension collective. Appuyée sur l’analyse matérielle et poétique des manuscrits, cette thèse s’attache à montrer les dynamiques qui donnent vie au personnage de Marie et ses répercussions sur la composition du texte dramatique, ainsi que sur les communautés qu’il engendre<br>The dramatis personae of Mary in La Présentation de Marie au Temple, Les Miracles de Nostre Dame par personnages and Le Mystère de la Passion d’Arnoul Gréban is at the intersection of languages, poetical genres, and places where drama is performed. Her character is inspired by the Christian faith in the Incarnation: within the Virgin was incarnated the Word of God who, in his human form, in the person of the Son, spoke to men. The fundamental affirmation of Christianity underlines the importance of the Word. Nevertheless, the New Testament is discreet about Mary, while the religious plays show the mother of Lord characterized by a self-expression, a mainly lyrical one. Inspired by texts in Latin and in vernacular, from literary and rhetorical texts, and under the influence of social realities, the character of Mary is at the confluence of these currents that she transcends and, at their interstice, models a new way of expressing faith, to which the dramatic form gives a collective dimension. Based on the material and poetical analysis of the manuscripts, this thesis aims to show the dynamics that give life to Mary in theatre and the repercussions of her character on the poetry of the dramatic text, as well as on the communities it engenders

Ces écris sont les connus Miroirs du Prince, traités normatifs dirigés spécifiquement aux gouvernants. La France, en spécial entre le XIVème et XVème siècles, a été un des plus importants scénario de cette modalité d’écriture, justement parce que Charles V, pendant son règne (1364-1380), a favorisé la présence d’innobrable gens de lettres dans sa cour et a stimulé cette production normative. Ainsi, la proposition de ce travail cherche à percevoir comment les hommes de cette période-là ont pensé le pouvoir et ont contribué pour le construire dans les modèles qu’ils croyaient idéaux. Donnés ses objectifs de reformuler toute la Chrétienté et de formuler l’image du prince à partir des mémoires du royaume de la France, les ouvrages de Philippe de Mézières (1327-1405), Le Songe du Vieil Pelerin, et de Christine de Pisan (1363-1430), Le livre des fais et bonnes meurs du sage roy Charles V, ont été prises comme base dans cette étude. Estes escritos são os conhecidos Espelhos de Príncipe, tratados normativos dirigidos especificamente aos governantes. A França, em especial entre os séculos XIV e XV, foi um dos mais importantes palcos dessa modalidade de escrita, justamente por Carlos V, durante seu reinado (1364- 1380), ter favorecido a presença de inúmeros letrados na sua corte e ter estimulado esta produção normativa. Assim, a proposta deste trabalho gira em torno de perceber como os homens desse período pensaram o poder e contribuíram para construí-lo dentro dos moldes que julgavam ideais. L'allégorie vernaculaire médiévale noue entre 1300 et 1500 des rapports ambigus avec l'écriture de soi. Dans le second Pèlerinage de Vie Humaine de Guillaume de Digulleville, la caractérisation autobiographique force un système jusqu'alors consacré à la représentation d'un sujet typique : la voix du prédicateur s'incarne dans un je-énoncé convergeant avec la personne de l'auteur désignée par son nom propre, son histoire, sa propriété littéraire. Mais les conditions éditoriales des 14ème et 15ème siècles ne favorisent pas la reconnaissance de cette singularité : dans les manuscrits et les éditions imprimées, le sujet est voué à être objectivé sur le plan du paratexte et de l'image. Ce n'est qu'au début du 16ème siècle que Digulleville est reconnu dans ses prérogatives d'auteur. Avec Christine de Pizan, l'autobiographie allégorique trouve son équilibre : dans un dispositif dialogique hérité de Boèce, le sujet de l'énonciation s'assume comme foyer de la rétrospection narrative. Le Séjour d'Honneur d'Octovien de Saint-Gelais, où les manipulations topiques font vaciller les limites entre expérience et illusion, permet finalement au je – auteur de se frayer sa voie dans l'espace de la fiction<br>Between 1300 and 1500, the mediaeval vernacular allegory had paradoxical and ambiguous links with self-writing. In the second "Pélerinage de Vie Humaine" by Guillaume de Digulleville, the autobiographical feature appears in a system that was then characterized by the representation of a general subject : the preacher's voice is embodied in the "I", uttered, which focuses on the author designated by his name, his story and his literary propriety. Yet the editorial conditions in the 14th and 15th centuries do not favour the admission of this autobiographical singularity. In the manuscripts as well as in the printed editions, the subject is object in the paratext and picture. It is only in the early 16th century that his attributes of author are acknowledged. With Christine de Pizan, the allegorical autobiography finds its place with the dialogue device inherited from Boèce: the subject of enunciation is the centre of the narrative retrospection. The Séjour d'Honneur by Octovien de Saint-Gelais -in which the use of topics makes the boundaries between experience and illusion sway-, allowed finally the I-author to make way, under the name of its character, in the world of fiction

Abstract:
Although Philippe de Mézières (ca 1327-1405) was born into a not very influential gentry family from northern France, his steep career brought him to the Holy Land. As a diplomat and an ardent supporter of the idea of the Crusades, he got to visit the most important European royal courts, thus securing the attention of historians. He consciously reflects the political and social climate in Europe at the time, he explores religious issues and even own experiences - in short, de Mézières vast literary work is one of the most remarkable images of Europe during the late Middle Ages and the thinking of a medieval man of a high social status. Thanks to Philippe de Mézières' presence at the Royal Court of Charles IV in Prague and their likely meeting in Paris in 1378, we can trace evident links to Luxembourg politics in his work, to the Czech Kingdom and even to Charles IV himself, including his son Wenceslas. As a Crusades theoretician, de Mézières got himself involved in the highest levels of European politics, yet he constantly emphasized the need for morality, peace and cohesiveness in the courts. The thesis uses an example of one of de Mézières' later works, his Letter to Richard II (Epistre au roi Richarti, 1395), to explore diplomatic ties in Western Europe in the fourteenth century and pursues...

In questa tesi vorremmo condurre uno studio approfondito sul Songe du Vieil Pelerin riguardante la complessa struttura di questo viaggio allegorico-didattico, i suoi fattori di coerenza e coesione che contribuiscono al suo principio di unità, l’utilizzo di alcune fonti cosi come la ricezione presso il pubblico. Il nostro scopo è quello di rendere più chiaro il meccanismo di costruzione del testo, la postura dell’autore e il posto del Songe nel contesto letterario della fine del XIV secolo. Il nostro studio inizia con l’analisi dettagliata del prologo. E’ li che Philippe fornisce le chiavi di lettura della sua opera e organizza la sua riflessione sul problema della verità : verità spirituale, morale o ancora verbale, e quindi legata a un modello retorico preciso, infine verità dell’opera, dei contenuti che vi sono veicolati e l’autenticità della scrittura. Questo problema costituisce il filo rosso che attraversa tutto l’itinerario compiuto dal pellegrino, nel racconto cosi come nelle parentesi didattiche o digressioni che vi si insericono, come cerchermo di mostrare nella parte centrale del nostro studio.
