Abstract:
Although metadiscourse has been examined in different genres, such as academic papers, newspaper editorials, school textbooks, and the like, still relatively little attention has been given to the discourse of cyber-genres, particularly blogs or weblogs. Using Hyland’s (2005) model, this paper examined the interactive and the interactional metadiscourse in Philippine investigative journalism blogs where English is used as a second language or L2. The corpus analyzed was taken from 20 investigative journalism blogs published in http://pcij.org/blog/, the official website of the Philippine

The researchers collected the needed data to identify the public opinion of Filipino adults who are aged 18 and above regarding Rappler's critical way of reporting. Despite the studies on defending journalism and coming up with various practices to protect journalists, still, the Philippines ranked as the third worst country in impunity versus journalists in the 2016 Global Impunity Index released by the Committee to Protect Journalists. In 2017, 2018, and 2019, it ranked fifth in the same impunity index. Then, the country ranked 7th and was still consistently part of the Top 10 rankings for the past three years, 2020, 2021, and 2022. This shows that the number of threats against journalists remains significant. This study deals with quantitative approach

The abstract is a crucial component of a Research Article (RA). Authors must capture readers’ attention from the very first sentence of their abstracts to encourage them to continue reading both the abstract and the full article. Consequently, it is essential for an abstract to be well-crafted. This study aimed to investigate the rhetorical moves and linguistic features found in a research article abstract (henceforth RAA) published in Philippine E-Journals. A corpus of 20 published RAs from Philippine E-Journals, 10 for qualitative and 10 for quantitative, have been analyzed following J.M. Sw

Abstract:
News audiences on social media succumb to filtering systems to navigate the overabundance of information. However, filtering systems get bolstered by echo chambers, increasing social media polarization, especially when false information hinders better-informed viewpoints. Reticence, though understudied, has the ability to hamper the spread of factual information. Hence, this study aims to investigate why social media users showcase reticence toward publicly correcting false information on their feeds, and how this disposition can affect ideological polarization. The Philippine media presented itself as the vanguard of the Filipino people’s basic freedoms, especially the freedom of speech and expression. However, as with any responsibility that pertains to that freedom, the news media had its flaws that may result in persecution. A qualitative research method was utilized where Colaizzi’s strategy for phenomenological data analysis was used to analyze the gathered data.
