Abstract:
Abstract Objectives To determine the content, implementation, and effectiveness of policies aimed at improving breastfeeding practices in the Philippines. Methods This study used mixed methods, including a desk review of relevant policies and documents and in-depth interviews with 100 caregivers, workers, employers, health workers, and policymakers. Results Although the Philippines has a strong regulatory framework to protect breastfeeding, the implementation and effectiveness of breastfeeding policies are limited by structural and individual barriers. Structural barriers include: a lack of consistent breastfeeding promotion, limited access to skilled counselling support from health system to community level, and limited breastfeeding support in workplaces for working mothers. Inappropriate marketing of commercial milk formula, including cross-promotion and engagement of industry representatives with health professionals, persists due to gaps in legal provisions and weak monitoring and enforcement of the Philippine Milk Code. Individual barriers include failure to address early breastfeeding problems, misconceptions that undermine breastfeeding, limited knowledge and skills of health workers and caregivers, and lack of support from family members. Conclusions Breastfeeding promotion, protection, and support policies in the Philippines are consistent with global standards, but their effectiveness for improving breastfeeding practices can be improved by addressing persistent barriers at the structural and individual levels. Abstract:
The Philippines has adopted policies to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding on par with global standards, yet the impact of these policies is not well understood. This study assesses the adequacy and potential impact of breastfeeding policies, as well as the perceptions of stakeholders of their effectiveness and how to address implementation barriers. This mixed methods study entailed a desk review of policies and documents and in-depth interviews with 100 caregivers, employees, employers, health workers, and policymakers in the Greater Manila Area. Although the Philippines has a comprehensive breastfeeding policy framework, its effectiveness was limited by structural and individual barriers. Structural barriers included inconsistent breastfeeding promotion, limited access of mothers to skilled counseling, limited workplace breastfeeding support, gaps in legal provisions, weak monitoring and enforcement of the Philippine Milk Code, and the short duration and limited coverage of maternity leave. Individual barriers included knowledge and skills gaps, misconceptions, and low self-confidence among mothers due to insufficient support to address breastfeeding problems, misconceptions in the community that undermine breastfeeding, limited knowledge and skills of health workers, and insufficient support extended to mothers by household members. Breastfeeding policies in the Philippines are consistent with global standards, but actions to address structural and individual barriers are needed to enhance their effectiveness for improving breastfeeding practices.

Abstract:
Food safety is a fundamental public health concern that is dependent on various factors such as changing global food production patterns, public expectations, and international trade policies.1,2 As a member of the World Trade Organization, the Philippines has agreed to follow the Uruguay Round of Trade Organization, the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement and Technical Barriers to Trade that permits countries to take legitimate measures to protect life and health of their consumers in relation to food safety matters while prohibiting them from using those measures in a way that unjustifiably restricts food trade.3,4,5 The Philippines is also a member of the Codex Alimentarius Commission that aims to ensure consumer protection and to facilitate international trade.6 With these objectives, Codex focuses on the development of food standards based on risk analysis and independent scientific advice provided by expert bodies organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization.7 Risk analysis is a systematic and disciplined methodology that provides policymakers with the science-based information and evidence needed for effective and transparent decision-making, leading to improvements in food safety and public health.8 In the Philippines, Republic Act No. 10611 or the Food Safety Act of 2013, serves as the framework for implementing the farm to fork food safety regulatory system which ensures a high level of consumer health protection, fair trade practices and global competitiveness of Philippine foods by controlling hazards in the food chain, adoption of precautionary measures based on scientific risk analysis, and adoption of international standards.9

Abstract:
Highly Urbanized Cities (HUCs) in the Philippines were at the forefront of public health surveillance and response during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the rapid spread of COVID-19 to Philippine cities, local government units continuously assessed, adapted, and implemented public health interventions (PHIs) and depended on available open-source government data (OSGD). This study consolidated PHIs in selected HUCs in the Philippines using high-quality OSGD to create a timeline of interventions and document good practices in local COVID-19 control. OSGD resources were collected from February 2020 to January 2023, and the data quality of OSGD was evaluated using the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmarks. A total of 180 metadata sources that met at least two core standards (Authorship and Currency) were included in the analysis. COVID-19 control strategies were analyzed vis-à-vis the rise of COVID-19 cases and types of PHIs, including the control of imported cases, case management, contact management, behavioral modification, and pharmaceutical intervention. Travel bans and hard lockdowns in Luzon early in the pandemic delayed the introduction of COVID-19 to other parts of the country. Good practices of LGUs for local COVID-19 control, such as quarantine passes, curfews and liquor bans, using QR-based contact tracing, massive community testing in high-risk communities, and free public swabbing centers, were implemented to slow down the local spread of COVID-19. With the evolving scenarios in city-level COVID-19 epidemics, local risk assessments based on available OSGD drove the adoption of relevant and innovative control strategies in HUCs in the Philippines. Lessons learned must be integrated into epidemic preparedness and response programs against future emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases.

Abstract:
Abstract: Although the concept of self-care for helping professionals has a growing body of psychological literature in the United States, this is not the case in other countries, such as the Philippines. As the research on self-care for helping professionals has continued to develop, it is becoming evident that further exploration is needed in relation to different predictor variables, populations, and professions. Inherent to the ideals and values of the mental health profession is the focus on the needs of the client, possibly at the cost of the professional. The potential outcome may be a helping professional who is numb to their day-to-day life stressors who may experience burnout at a much faster rate in comparison to other professions. The research on burnout has emphasized the importance of self-care but yet to examine how self-care should be implemented within the Philippine culture. In the Philippines, a typical helping professional’s caseload may be more than three times the average in developed countries, such as the United States. The purpose of this study is to highlight the importance of self-care, provide a framework of self-care components important to Filipino/a helping professionals, and explore how they address burnout and vicarious trauma in relation to their self-care practices. Using qualitative interviews of Filipino/a helping professionals and Conventional Content Analysis, 12 self-care themes emerged from their responses.

Abstract:
A number of helminth zoonoses have been recorded in the Philippines, and the majority of these are transmitted through food. These include echinostomosis, artichinostomosis, heterophydosis, camcophallosis, paragonimosis, opisthorchiosis, fasciolosis, taeniosis/cysticercosis, spirometrosis/sparganosis, gnathostomosis, intestinal capillariosis, angiostrongylosis, and anisakiosis. The causative agents involved, animal hosts, human infections with these diseases, and their distribution and transmission are discussed. Taenia saginata asiatica is recently recognized as one of the two causes of human taeniosis in the Philippines. Previous reports locally of Taenia saginata were in fact of Taenia saginata asiatica, thus data for the former are now referable to the latter. The pig and its liver serve as the intermediate host and organ predilection site of the cysticercus (larval form), respectively, for this species. Accordingly, meat inspection of slaughter pigs should now include the examination of the liver and not only of the muscles, as currently practiced. The mudfish, Channa striata (dalag), is recently recorded to harbor the larva of Gnathostoma doloresi. Human infection with the nematode may occur through ingestion of improperly cooked infected fish. While some of these zoonotic diseases are now rarely observed, still others continue to be public health problems. Many are endemic in certain areas of the Philippines because of the food habit of consuming raw or partly cooked fish, edible snails, crustaceans, and meat in these areas. More studies on the epidemiology and transmission, including the animal hosts involved locally, are still needed for some of these problems. Changing eating habits and practices can prevent human infection with many of these diseases. Proper disposal of fecal materials from both humans and animals can also help control or, if not, cut the life cycle of many of these infectious agents. These, however, require an aggressive health education campaign in order to be successful.

Abstract:
Pregnancy is considered a state of wellness where few special precautions or advice are necessary. This is because the developing fetus depends on the mother’s healthy body for all its needs. As a result, pregnant women need to take precautions and prioritize their health and nutrition to ensure the well-being of both them and their baby. The health of the mother and the unborn child is greatly impacted by self-care practices throughout pregnancy. This study utilized a researcher-made questionnaire and a descriptive-correlational research approach. The study was conducted at the Barangay Apas Health Center, where initial contact was established with the barangay health staff. Subsequently, questionnaires were distributed to pregnant women during their mother’s class. A total sampling technique was employed, with N=41 pregnant women participating as research subjects. The simple percentage, weighted mean, and chi-square test of independence were used to treat the data statistically. The findings revealed a notable emphasis on the physical dimension of self-care, with consistent practice compared to the intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Despite the varying degrees of emphasis across the five dimensions, the pregnant women demonstrated a good understanding and application of self-care practices. Pregnant women selected from Barangay Apas mostly exhibited a good awareness of appropriate self-care practices during pregnancy, adhering to them effectively. Despite this, no significant correlation was found between the respondents’ profiles and their overall self-care practices. This therefore, highlights the significance of adopting individualized and holistic approaches to address the diverse needs and practices of pregnant women. The findings of this study can serve as a valuable resource for pregnant women, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and information to improve their self-care practices effectively through adopting scientifically proven procedures and strategies which can ensure the well-being and welfare of both them and their babies.

Abstract:
Higher education institutions (HEIs) are as important as other workplace settings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Health (DOH) put a premium on the safety and health of all HEI stakeholders. This research determines the occupational safety and health (OSH) practices of HEIs in Region V to assess how far they have started and implemented health and safety measures for the well-being of all employees. A descriptive–evaluative method was utilized in conducting this study. Questionnaires and documentary analysis were used as data-gathering tools. The prevalence of OSH practices was high in the six HEIs selected in Region V. There was also a significant difference in the appraisals of stakeholders, even if they rated the indicators as highly practiced. The challenges cited were least experienced by the stakeholders, specifically, regulations to ban and control dangerous products, low public awareness of OSH, recurrent fluctuations in the amount of work, and conflicting work demands. There is a need to consult employees in policy formulation to increase participation. Having adequate facilities not only protects workers from hazards but also increases workers’ productivity. Safe and adequate facilities are needed to encourage employees to go to work because they need to know that they can still attend to their personal needs while at school. Staff require information and training to operate safely without putting their health at risk.

Abstract:
While there has been considerable literature on mental health coping mechanisms of Filipinos, especially among different age groups, a functional analysis of these findings remains lacking. Consequently, this paper attempts to analyze mental health coping mechanisms used by Filipinos across different generations, identifying the common practices and different factors. Employing a systematic literature review methodology, twenty-nine (29) studies were analyzed through content analysis technique. The results of the study revealed seven (7) areas of common coping mechanisms categorized into mobilizing body and mind, illuminating support, nurturing self, dialogues with professionals, finding strength in faith, utilizing traditional practices, and learning and growth mechanisms, while the factors were grouped into five (5) areas - culture, attitudes, gender, economic and spiritual. The findings imply that illuminating support, finding strength in faith, and utilizing traditional practices are the most common coping mechanisms employed by the older generation and that mobilizing body and mind, illuminating support, nurturing self, dialogues with professionals, finding strength in faith and learning and growth mechanisms are commonly used by the younger generation. The inclination of Filipinos towards certain coping strategies is influenced by various identified factors which can have both positive and negative influences. These influences can lead to a reluctance to consider alternative coping methods while reinforcing a firm conviction in the efficacy of their chosen strategies.

Abstract:
The teachers’ role in the teaching and learning process is vital. However, they can only be effective if they maintain their health and energy levels. Thus, this phenomenological inquiry intends to explore the health of public school teachers in Negros Occidental, Philippines. The data were gathered using an in-depth interview. Meanwhile, the recursive textual analysis guided by the three C's of Lichtman- Coding, Categorizing, and Conceptualizing was employed to analyse the data thematically. The findings show that teachers did not feel any pain nor weakness, slept well, had enough energy to do tasks, and were free from any diseases. Hence, health issues were managed accordingly. Likewise, teachers exemplified their practices in monitoring their weight, medical results, food intake, and feelings of oneself. Also, teachers shared that to be healthy is to think that you are healthy. Thus, eating healthy food, regular exercise, and enough fluid consumption are the most common health practices of teachers that helped alleviate their health status and self-confidence. In general, teachers emphasized considering one's physical conditions, focusing on things that make them healthy. Henceforth, individual assessment of health status differs. Nevertheless, regular practice of healthful behaviors can maintain or improve health.

Abstract:
Emergency and trauma imaging is one area in radiology where cross-contamination frequently occurs. Therefore, radiographers must have adequate knowledge, positive attitudes, and safe practices of aseptic techniques in this area to reduce infection and prevent its associated health risks. This study aims to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) towards aseptic techniques in emergency and trauma imaging and its association with demographic profile of radiographers in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 74 radiographers from seven tertiary care hospitals in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. An adapted questionnaire was used to measure radiographers’ KAP level towards aseptic techniques in emergency and trauma imaging. Results showed that most radiographers have positive attitudes but have inadequate knowledge and unsafe practice of aseptic techniques in emergency and trauma imaging. Radiographers who have earned a graduate or postgraduate degree were more likely to have adequate knowledge and safe practices of aseptic techniques. Older and experienced radiographers were more likely to have safe practices of aseptic techniques towards emergency and trauma imaging. Given the results, further training is required for radiographers in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, regarding aseptic technique practices in emergency and trauma imaging, targeted to less experienced and younger radiographers.

Abstract:
Malnutrition is a public health concern in the Philippines that presents a complex issue mainly because of its multi-dimensional origin. Grounded on the UNICEF conceptual framework on the causes of malnutrition, the research investigates the relationship between poverty and practices of mothers with nutritional status of children below five years old in Cebu Province, Philippines. A total of 652 mothers were surveyed in two cohort groups. One group was an implementation site of the ECCD F1K Program while the other is the control group. In processing data, One-way ANOVA was applied to compare the two cohorts in terms of malnutrition while chi square test was done to understand relationships between profile of mothers, poverty, practices and child malnutrition. Level of significance to test differences and relationships among variables was set at p≤0.05. Findings suggest that short term impact of intensive health and nutrition programs did not reverse malnutrition. The occurrence of chronic malnutrition was significantly linked with practices of mothers (p=0.009); while acute malnutrition (p=0.030) and overnutrition (p=0.000) were significantly associated with poverty. An interplay of predisposing factors were noted to affect both the practices of mothers and poverty. These factors included the mother’s age (p=0.000) and number of children (p=0.000) for practices of mothers, while occupation (p=0.047), number of children (p=0.000), educational attainment (p=0.000) and age of mothers (p=0.000) were linked to poverty. In order to address malnutrition in the Philippines, there is a need to prioritize government programs that focused on the First 1000 days of the child with emphasis on adolescent sexual reproductive health, social behavior change communication, and equitable education opportunities for families.

Green hotel practices are one of the environmentally friendly initiatives that aim to reduce the negative impact on the environment by saving energy (for example, by installing energy-efficient appliances and renewable energy programs), reducing water consumption (for example, by installing water-efficient devices and equipment and implementing a linen and towel reuse program), and managing and reducing waste (e.g., by implementing recycling programs and using durable items rather than disposable ones) (Abdou et al., 2020). In the Philippines, the House of Representatives approved House Bill 9061 on second reading. The bill, which was primarily written by the former president and current speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, aims to encourage all business organizations—domestic and foreign—established and operating under Philippine laws to uphold corporate social responsibility in the conduct of their operations in the nation. (House of Representatives Press Releases, 2022). Hence, the purpose of this research is to know the different green practices of the different hotels in Albay in relation to social responsibility. The study uses a mixed method research design to identify the profile, green practices and challenges encountered by the hotels, while Pearson of Correlation was also used in order to analyze whether there is a significant relationship between the hotel profile and its practices. The analyzed data revealed that The different green practices in terms of: community involvement and development, human resource management, consumer issues protection, fair operating practices, an organizational governance got the same adjectival interpretation of well-practiced. On the other hand, only the variable environmental health and pollution prevention got the adjectival interpretation of practiced. Furthermore, Regarding the number of rooms and the hotel's green practices, the null hypothesis is accepted; therefore, there is no significant relationship. For the number of employees, only the variable environmental health and pollution prevention got a computed t of 2.06 with tabulated t at 5%, which indicates that the null hypothesis is rejected and there is a significant relationship. Lastly, for the years of operation, two of the variables got a rejected null hypothesis and have a significant relationship between the profile and the green practices: human resource management and environmental health and pollution prevention.

Abstract:
Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected public health systems worldwide, including the Philippines. This perspective article analyzes findings from a multicenter prospective study conducted in Metro Manila from September 2021 to September 2022, focusing on the risks posed by COVID-19 to pregnant women. The study, encompassing 500 participants, revealed that significant risk factors among unvaccinated individuals included pregnancy, white-collar employment, prior vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) infections, and international travel during the pandemic. Protective factors included higher education, contraception use, and history of VPD immunization. Policy recommendations emphasize the development of targeted health education programs to inform decision-making on contraception, vaccination, and maternal health. Integration of COVID-19 vaccination into routine antenatal care is essential, alongside promoting hygiene measures and physical distancing in health-care settings. Strengthening health-care consultations and telemedicine services is crucial to ensure comprehensive maternal care. In addition, robust monitoring systems for vaccine uptake and health outcomes are recommended to enhance public health responses and mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women in the Philippines.

Abstract:
Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease that remains to be a primary health concern globally. The Philippines is among the top TB-burdened countries. Workplace TB prevention and control programs are essential to ensure the health and safety of workers and economic security. There remains a knowledge gap regarding the Philippine workplace TB prevention and control program implementation. This qualitative study involving key informant interviews reviewed the implementation of the workplace TB program in selected companies in a high TB burden region in Eastern Philippines. Results were presented under four themes in accordance with the components of the workplace TB policy: preventive strategies, medical management, data recording and reporting, and social policy. Various good practices, opportunities, and challenges in the implementation of the workplace TB program were identified. There is a need to strengthen the enforcement of policy across different components. Compliance with guidelines on preventive strategies and recording and reporting schemes needs to be intensified. Coordination across different levels and agencies may also be enhanced to allow more efficient implementation. Increased awareness of corporate decision-makers may improve company ownership of the program leading to improved implementation while increased awareness of employees on their rights and entitlements may likewise enhance compliance.

Abstract:
This study explored the mental habits of locals in a rural community in the Philippines regarding folk healing, with a particular focus on the use of herbs and food restrictions. Conducted in the first half of 2024, the research aimed to understand how these traditional healing practices persist and influence local perceptions of health and well-being. Data were gathered from ten (10) informants through in-depth interviews, guided by a validated semi-structured interview guide. The collected data were then analyzed using Clarke and Braun’s thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns in the participants’ responses. Two (2) main themes emerged from the analysis: (1) Integrating the Power of Herbs and Touch in Folk Healing, which highlights the widespread belief in the therapeutic effects of herbal remedies combined with physical touch; and (2) Adhering to Food Restrictions, which underscores the community’s practice of avoiding certain foods to aid in recovery or prevent illness. These findings suggest that folk healing remains deeply embedded in the community’s cultural and mental framework, reinforcing a shared reliance on traditional health practices.

Abstract:
Purpose: Environmental physical therapy (EPT) is the incorporation of environmental health into the field of physical therapy that encompasses the relationships between the environment, human health and functioning, and physical therapy. A previous study had determined that Filipino physical therapists underutilize their environment in rehabilitation but display strong awareness, support, and grasp of EPT. Thus, this study aimed to formulate guidelines aimed towards the smooth transition of EPT into clinical PT practice in the Philippines. Methods: The study employed a research and development design based on the quantitative results of a study conducted relating to the awareness, understanding, perception, and current EPT practice in the Philippines as well as the qualitative data collected within this study through small group discussions and interviews. The interview guide for the small group discussion was developed and content validated. The guidelines were then guided by established strategies, mainly the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the One Health approach of the World Health Organization (WHO), and the EPT Agenda, all aimed at achieving universal environmental sustainability. Results: The results of the data collection reveal that Filipino physical therapists show promise in adopting EPT to promote healthcare sustainability. Hence, the GREEN PATH was categorized into three priorities for action being: utilize the environment in clinical practice, utilize other-than-humans, and practice sustainable development. Each of these priorities for action were then subcategorized into areas seeking to address attitude and awareness, resource and facilities, and policy and practice. Discussion: The development of the GREEN PATH acts as a guide to the clinical practice of EPT within the Philippines and as a set of practice suggestions tailored to address the intersection of physical therapy, environmental health, and sustainable development.

Abstract:
Background/Objectives: There is extensive evidence that breastfeeding saves lives, improves health, and provides value to the economy and societies worldwide. The Philippines and Viet Nam have progressive policies to enable breastfeeding, and breastfeeding rates in these countries have substantively improved. In the Philippines, exclusive breastfeeding under six months (EBF) increased from 35.9% (2008) to 60.1% (2021) and, in Viet Nam, in just over a decade, EBF has more than doubled, from 17.0% (2010) to 45.4% (2021). We aimed to use an evidence synthesis to consolidate learnings from policy support to enable breastfeeding in the Philippines and Viet Nam, to identify insights to improve future programming to improve breastfeeding practices in these two countries, and glean learnings that can potentially be adapted for similar contexts. Methods: This manuscript presents a qualitative evidence synthesis of seven purposively selected research articles from the Philippines and Viet Nam. Results: Since the 1960s, the Philippines and Viet Nam have notably improved policies protecting breastfeeding. Both countries have implemented legislation that is substantially aligned with the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and subsequent World Health Assembly resolutions. Both countries have improved paid maternity leave provisions, with Viet Nam providing 6 months of paid leave, yet insufficient coverage to informal workers, and the Philippines providing 3.5 months of paid maternity leave while expanding maternity protection coverage to informal workers. From 2006–2021, breastfeeding rates increased in both countries alongside policy improvements yet barriers to implementation remain. Conclusions: Implementation research has documented policy progress and improved breastfeeding rates in the Philippines and Viet Nam. Our analysis offers valuable lessons potentially applicable beyond these contexts, emphasizing the need for addressing policy gaps and targeted cross-sectoral policy actions to enhance breastfeeding practices. Learnings from implementing national marketing restrictions of commercial milk formula and associated products and maternity protection policies in these countries could inform the implementation of newly developed regional standards together with supportive policies, facilitating the harmonization of regional regulatory environments.

Abstract:
Manila is a primate city with national and international significance. Unlike any other city in the Philippines, Manila has the mandate of serving not just its local constituents, but also a clientele of national and even global scale. Recognizing that the localization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at sub-national levels is a key element in meeting the targets by 2030, it is important to look at how cities have been confronting local challenges relating to the development goals. Focusing on SDGs 3, 4 and 11, this city profile shows that Manila has performed reasonably well against key national and regional benchmarks on health, education and urban sustainability. However, as the city continues to lag behind many of its regional counterparts, key reforms must be undertaken in the areas of local policymaking, targeting of resources, scale of public participation and engagement of national government agencies. Heading into the first four years of the SDGs, the aim of this profile is to recognize and contextualize Manila’s existing urban conditions, best practices and pressing challenges—which would all have a significant implication on how Manila stands to attain SDGs 3, 4 and 11.

Abstract:
Dengue fever remains a major public health concern in the Philippines, particularly in endemic areas like Kalibo, Aklan. This study examines the factors influencing family caregivers' awareness of the potential health benefits of papaya (Carica papaya) leaves in managing dengue fever. Employing a quantitative, comparative-correlational research design, the study surveyed 349 family caregivers in a dengue hotspot barangay in Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines. Data were gathered using a validated, researcher-made questionnaire and analyzed through statistical tools, including descriptive statistics, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient. The findings revealed that socio-demographic variables such as age, gender, education, and income significantly influenced awareness levels. Older caregivers and those with higher education demonstrated greater awareness of papaya leaves' benefits, while economic constraints often directed families toward alternative remedies. Technological factors, including access to online resources, and cultural influences within kinship and social factors also significantly shaped caregivers' understanding. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in awareness when grouped by socio-demographic characteristics and highlighted correlations between influencing factors and awareness levels. Papaya leaves were recognized by the respondents for their therapeutic benefits, particularly in alleviating thrombocytopenia and enhancing immune response in dengue fever management. The findings emphasized the need for integrated health education programs and community-driven campaigns to promote informed and safe use of herbal treatments. By bridging traditional knowledge with evidence-based practices, the study contributes to enhancing caregiving practices and health outcomes in underserved areas in the Philippines.

Abstract:
Effective waste management in dairy buffalo farming is vital to ensure the health and productivity of a farm and its farmers, as well as to minimize negative environmental impacts. This study examined the waste management practices of dairy buffalo farmers in Nueva Ecija, Philippines in relation to their socio-economic status and farm profile. Fifty-nine dairy buffalo farmers were interviewed face-to-face using pre-tested semi-structured questionnaires to gather data on their socio-demographic and economic profiles, farm profiles, and waste management system. Principal Component Analysis and binary regression were used to determine correlation between socio-economic status and farm profile with their manure management systems. Eighty percent of the respondents practiced stockpiling while 12% practiced vermi-composting. The liquid waste is disposed of via open channels going to rice fields, rivers, creeks, irrigation canals, forage areas, or vacant lots. The non-biodegradable farm waste is either buried, burned, thrown in a vacant area, reused, sold or given to garbage collectors. The regression model revealed that the significant determinant of manure management system was animal holding (p<0.05) which indicates that as the animal holding of the dairy farmers increased by 1 unit, there was a .23 increase in the probability that the dairy farmers will practice stockpiling. The agencies concerned need to intensify efforts to disseminate suitable, cost-effective, efficient and sustainable interventions related to waste management for dairy buffalo farms.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, students faced increased risk of contracting the virus due to the relaxation of health protocols by the Philippine government and the authorization of face-to-face instruction in schools by the Department of Education. There is little data on basic education school students' awareness of COVID-19 in the Philippines, particularly in Cebu City. A cross-sectional descriptive-correlational research design was utilized to determine junior and senior high school students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding COVID-19. In this study, a survey questionnaire was used to compare and attempt to identify relationships between the demographic profile of students and their KAPs regarding COVID-19. This study also investigated the relationships between students' KAPs. JHS and SHS students exhibited outstanding KAPs for COVID-19. Students' demographic characteristics, including grade level and family income, were significantly associated with their KAPs toward the disease. However, their gender was not significantly associated with their KAPs. There was a significant relationship between students' COVID-19 KAPs. It is imperative that the DepEd develop strategies and programs to combat the situation due to pandemic and prepare for similar situations in future. With the aid of curriculum designers, science educators must adapt the science education curriculum to address current and future health concerns.

Abstract:
Background: Folk medicine refers to traditional healing practices anchored on cultural beliefs of body physiology and health preservation. Reflective of indigenous heritage, it fosters a better understanding of health and disease, healthcare systems, and biocultural adaptation. In the Philippines, Quiapo is a well-known site for folk medicine services, cultural diversity, religious practices, and economic activities. Methods: This study utilized a phenomenological approach to comprehend the lived experiences of health-seeking individuals and the meaning behind their acquisition of folk medicine products. Using convenience sampling, seven participants acquiring folk medicine products in Quiapo on the day of data collection were approached and interviewed on separate instances. The collected data subsequently underwent thematic analysis. Results: Analysis revealed three emergent themes: health-seeking behavior, sources of knowledge, and folk medicine utilization. Health-seeking behavior was linked with the participants’ purpose of going to Quiapo, reasons for utilizing folk medicine, experiences in using folk medicine, and beliefs associated with the product bought. Sources of knowledge tackled the participants’ sources of information about Quiapo and its products. Folk medicine utilization relates to the type of product bought, its perceived medicinal use, and its history of usage. Conclusion: Folk medicine is perceived to be effective alleviating health concerns. The acquisition of such products is attributed to satisfaction from prior experience, distrust in the current healthcare system, family tradition, and intention to supplement existing medical treatment. This study provides health professionals a better understanding of patients who patronize folk medicine, subsequently aiding them in providing a holistic approach to treatment.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effects of pesticide use on the health of farmers and raise awareness and knowledge of the proper use, handling, application, and waste disposal of pesticides to prevent detrimental effects on their health.Research Method: The study used a close-ended structured survey questionnaire and employed non-probability sampling based on convenience in selecting 100 farmers. The survey gathered data on the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants, pesticide use, mixing and application of pesticides, after-spraying practices, and farmers’ health. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the collected data.Findings: The study found that over half of the participants perceived symptoms of pesticide poisoning (68%). The most prevalent complaints felt by farmers right after applying pesticides were skin irritation (50%), dry throat (35%), headache (16%), eye irritation (11%), nose irritation (9%), dizziness (4%), blurring of eyes (2%), and weakness or fatigue (1%). These symptoms were attributed to the longevity of pesticide exposure, unsafe storage practices, improper disposal of empty pesticide containers, and the lack of use of personal protective devices.Research Limitations: The study is limited by the non-probability sampling method used in selecting the participants, which may limit the generalizability of the results. Moreover, self-reporting and recall bias may have also affected the accuracy of the data collected.Originality/ Value: According to the research, farmers must be educated on pesticide usage, handling, application, and disposal to avoid health problems. The report also calls for legislative initiatives to address pesticide abuse and safety in agriculture, especially in rural regions.

Abstract:
The halal industry has been widely discussed in Muslim-majority countries; however, its exploration in non-Muslim-majority countries like the Philippines remains underexplored. This issue is crucial to ensure that minority Muslim communities gain understanding and access to halal services aligned with Islamic law. This study aims to enhance halal literacy regarding halal products and supply chains, raise awareness among the Muslim community about the importance of halal products, and expand understanding of halal standards based on PNS/BAFS 101:2016 specifically and Islamic principles in general. The methodology employed in this study is qualitative descriptive, with data collection methods including observation, interviews, and documentation. Furthermore, this research provides direct education to the Muslim community and halal food business practitioners in Cagayan de Oro City, Northern Mindanao, Philippines. The results indicate that intensive education improves business practitioners' literacy on halal supply chain elements such as sourcing, manufacturing, and distribution, and assists them in integrating halal standards into operational practices. Public awareness of the importance of halal products has also increased, emphasizing that halal encompasses health benefits, ethics, and social justice. Additionally, the Muslim community and business practitioners have developed a deeper understanding of the Philippine national halal standards and Islamic principles, creating a synergy between religious values and professional business practices. This study presents significant implications by empowering the Muslim community and entrepreneurs. This strategic initiative can serve as a reference for enhancing the halal industry in other Muslim-minority countries.

Abstract:
Introduction: Environmental physical therapy (EPT) is the incorporation of environmental health into the field of physical therapy that encompasses the relationships between the environment, human health and functioning, and physical therapy. This study determined the level of awareness and understanding of Filipino physical therapists regarding the general concepts of EPT, their perceptions regarding its barriers and facilitators, and the current clinical practices in the Philippines. Methods: This study employed a quantitative design. Subjects were Filipino clinical physical therapists with at least 3 years of clinical practice in the Philippines. A questionnaire containing 55 items was developed, validated, and pre-tested. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistical analysis. Results: Eighty-eight clinical physical therapists participated in the study. Final questionnaire consisted of 55 items and had good internal consistency (Cronbach alpha>0.72). Findings show that Filipino physical therapists are extremely aware and find the general elements of EPT understandable. However, the subjects rarely utilized the environment and other-than-humans in practice, but were partially involved in sustainable practices. The top perceived barriers were the lack of availability and access to resources and to the physical environment, and the lack of knowledge and awareness on EPT practices. The top perceived facilitators were acceptance of adjustments to change and the positive emotional response of clinical staff and patients. The SGD provided an explanation on how the perceived barriers and facilitators affected clinical EPT practice. Discussion: The study revealed that Filipino PTs demonstrate the prerequisite characteristics inclined towards the implementation of EPT in the Philippines which can facilitate a smoother transition and integration of EPT into clinical practice. Filipino physical therapists have the opportunity to be at the forefront of promoting environmental sustainability in the healthcare system.

Abstract:
Water is an important basic commodity that is essential for human existence. As such. water should be safe and of the highest quality. Countries, like the Philippines. have set up considerably resources to ensure that safe and clean water is readily accessible and available to the majority of Filipinos. Many water borne and related diseases may result with poor water management, inadequate sanitation and inappropriate hygiene practices. These water-related diseases include diarrheal diseases. arsenic and nuoride poisoning, intestinal nematode infections. malnutrition, trachoma, schistosomiasis, malaria, Japanese encephalitis, lymphatic filariasis and dengue. However. efforts to implement successful public health interventions to combat these diseases are complicated by the fact that these diseases are associated with a variety of economic, societal and environmental factors. Biological agents that may affect water quality and safety include bacteria like Vibrio cholera, Echerichia coli, Salmonella parasites like Plasmodium and helminths such as Dracunculus medinensis. Chemical agents that may affect water quality and safety include heavy metals and pesticides that result from industrial and other man-made activities. Government agencies such as the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) are tasked to ensure that water resources meet the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW). Efforts should be sustained to promote quality water resources for everyone. Research and development efforts should also be intensified to achieve this objective.
