Abstract:
In the post Cold War and the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, the communist insurgents in the Philippines are still a potent force and the main threat to the county's national security. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the issues that brought about the resurgence of the communist insurgency and the counterinsurgency measures undertaken by the government. Economic disparity and injustice are major reasons for people to take up arms against the government. Unless these are resolved, the insurgency problem will continue to persist. A purely military solution t

This thesis examines the persistence of armed subversion as a security issue in the Philippines. Subversive wars have been fought in the colonial Philippines since the early 16th century, and successive Philippine governments have fought insurgent groups since the independence of the country in 1946. The foreign support received by the government and by the insurgents has not only allowed the armed conflict to continue but has also given what is essentially an internal conflict the appearance of an international security issue. The Philippine government has even attempted to show that its inte

The evolution of the Colombian internal conflict reflects the states ongoing desire to defeat the insurgency militarily to bring the situation back to peace. The states purpose in doing so is to boost the country to become a more robust and stable nation. Although many peace processes have been undertaken (including one in October 2012 sponsored by the international community in Oslo), the efforts have been unsuccessful. Terrorist groups, especially

Although the ASG is a relatively small group, it has wrought great injury to the Philippine image as of late. While nationalism has helped transform pre-modern societies into nation-states in part arguably to more efficiently wage warfare, it has also lead to a decline in the effectiveness of conventional military power. Abstract:
Common beliefs posit that rebel fragmentation and the emergence of splinter groups are often associated with intra-rebel violence. However, empirical evidence suggests that it is not always the case: there are cases of non-lethal competition between parent and splinter groups across time and terrain. This study explores the cause of lethal and non-lethal conflict between parent and splinter group that represent ethno-nationalist identity. By using theories of rational choice and outbidding strategy, I argue that lethal intra-rebel conflict are less likely when there is a balanced distribution

This thesis explores the complexities and processes involved in minority groups' negotiations with the state over the terms of their belonging in the national polity. It is based on fieldwork among the Banwaon, a non-Muslim minority group in the southern Philippines, not previously described in the literature. In the context of on-going insurgency and counter-insurgency operations, the Banwaon are divided: One leader called the katangkawan has become a paramilitary organiser supporting the state‘s counter-insurgency program. At the core of this thesis is a puzzle concerning processes of political and institutional change in Mindanao since the peace agreement in 1996: why did politico-military actors who enjoyed widespread legitimacy during decades of conflict fail to maintain legitimacy and sustain their political authority after gaining access to sub-national state power? The establishment of separatist insurgents in the "autonomous" government created in Muslim Mindanao failed to realise the promise of lasting peace or developmental progress. Under what conditions do rebel organizations control territory during civil war? How do civilians influence the distribution of territorial control? Why do rebels invest in governance, and why do they target civilians with violence, in some locations but not others?
