Abstract:

The question discussed in this article is whether Romance philology as didactic matter is still present in Polish university curricula and does it really represent main Romance languages. Some departments of Romance philology have separate curricula for French, Italian or Spanish, the others teach only French. The current trend seems to prefer practical subjects like professional translation or teaching foreign languages rather than historical linguistics or serious literary studies. Nevertheless, a solution could be found to preserve philological profile at master degree courses, by creating an optional curriculum containing, for example, historical lexicology and lexicography as well as translation of ancient literature, especially medieval and renaissance works.

Abstract:

The article comprises two sections: in Section One I sketch out the history and the evolution of French philology, understood both as an academic discipline and as an academic/administrative unit within Polish universities, officially known as Departments of French (Philology). In Section Two I reflect on my personal experience of that evolution, as it has affected my professional choices and academic career. Both meanings of “French philology” (discipline and institution) are rooted in German academic tradition to which the entire system of Polish humanities is indebted. Until the 1990s, French philology was synonymous with French studies, understood as the teaching and the academic study of French language and literature. Like other humanities departments in Poland, French philology departments inevitably functioned under the pressure of current political forces. Yet, French philologists in Poland never lost touch with the world’s evolving humanities or the changing scholarly paradigms. Following the radical political transformation of 1989, traditional French philology in Po-land opened up to a whole new range of scholarly fields (literatures and cultures of francophone countries), theories (postmodern and postcolonial studies), and approaches (interdisciplinary scho-larship). Thus Polish romanists have joined the international scholarly community. In the article, I document these processes, reflecting on my own university career: I started off as a traditional scholar doing research in the literature of French Middle Ages, then moved on to studying Canadian and American Francophone cultures, to eventually become involved in interdisciplinary studies at the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” at the University of Warsaw.

Abstract:

L’objectif du présent article est d’analyser les représentations se, rapportant aux difficultés de la grammaire française des étudiants en, philologie romane (études de langue et de culture françaises). Après avoir, exposé les principaux traits et les enjeux de la notion de représentation, mentale, nous présenterons et discuterons les résultats de l’étude empirique, réalisée auprès de 104 étudiants polonais, faisant leurs études à l’Institut, d’Études Romanes de l’Université de Varsovie. Durant la première étape, de la recherche, nous avons soumis à une analyse leur conscience, terminologique, celle-ci pouvant prouver une plus grande conscience du, fonctionnement de la langue. Pendant la deuxième phase, afin d’accéder, aux représentations des répondants, nous leur avons demandé de se, prononcer librement sur le degré de difficulté de divers aspects de la, grammaire française et d’expliciter les raisons de tel ou tel sentiment. Nous, avons mis l’accent, tant quant au contenu qu’à la forme, sur la perspective, qualitative et subjective. Notre recherche avait un caractère introspectif, puisant dans une approche herméneutique et phénoménologique.

Abstract:

Cette contribution s’intéresse à l’histoire des études linguistiques ayant porté sur les dialectes des Italiens établis au Sud de la Russie. Elle se focalisera sur les recherches en dialectologie des colonies situées sur les côtes septentrionales de la mer Noire, ainsi qu’en Crimée, conduites dans les années 1930 et 1960 par les chercheurs rattachés au département de philologie romane de l’université de Saint-Pétersbourg. Il s’agit de recherches inspirées par le même courant d’idées que celles de Borodina qui ont porté sur le parler des Suisses de Chabag, d’où l’intérêt qu’elles présentent pour le projet de recherche commun.

Abstract:

Despite the growing number of academic publications discussing the advantages of translation for language learning, school teachers of French rarely use such exercises in their work with students, complaining mainly about lack of time and suitable teaching materials. Academic centres which educate future linguists offer more opportunities to use translation in practical French language classes. This article presents the opinions of students of Romance studies on the subject of translation in language learning after a semester of work with Janina Radej’s publication entitled “Francuski w tłumaczeniach. Gramatyka 1-4” [French in translation. Grammar 1-4]. It was found that for students, translation is a new and attractive exercise that diversifies the language learning process. Despite the greater effort needed, students unanimously declared that they want to do this type of exercise. They recognised not only benefits in terms of linguistic improvement, but also the interdisciplinary value, since translation exercises in the language course also offer students preparation for classes in translation studies, and serve as a prelude for doing translations in the future.

Language anxiety is the feeling of tension and apprehension associated with second / foreign language learning. Abstract:

Cet article a pour but de présenter une synthèse à propos des découvertes et progrès récents dans le domaine de l’évolution langagière du latin classique au protoroman, après un demi-siècle de recherche innovante due au concept neuf de sociolinguistique diachronique mis en oeuvre dans une convergence commune par un nombre significatif de chercheurs travaillant aussi bien en histoire de l’Antiquité tardive et du haut Moyen Age qu’en philologie latine et romane, et qu’en linguistique. En premier lieu, il définit une nouvelle zone chronologique s’étendant du troisième au septième siècle et un nouvel objet spécifique, la dite «latinophonie tardive » , tous deux définis comme un terme intermédiaire spécifique, du point de vue tant chronologique que typologique, entre la latinophonie classique et la romanophonie archaïque. En second lieu, il réfute l’explication de ce profond changement langagier par le recours démodé à une décomposition générale du latin en tant que conséquence mortelle d’une civilisation «décadente » , et il insiste à rebours sur le rôle éminent des facteurs internes positifs à l’oeuvre dans cette métamorphose. En troisième lieu, il cite une série de documents pragmatiques dont la langue écrite doit être caractérisée non plus comme du «vieux » latin, mais comme du latin «nouveau » , autrement dit du roman archaïque, fréquemment caché (dans le passé) et se dissimulant (dans le présent) sous une graphie latiniforme, régulière ou erratique, comme les propres acteurs de ces siècles comblaient adroitement le fossé invoqué entre la langue parlée et la langue écrite : l’histoire documentée par écrit des langues romanes doit ainsi commencer dès le huitième siècle.

Abstract:

Cette contribution est centrée sur l’enseignement-apprentissage du lexique émotionnel lié aux concepts de solitude et de silence, en vue du développement de la compétence rédactionnelle en français langue étrangère au niveau avancé (B2). L’auteure applique la théorie de la métaphore conceptuelle de Lakoff et Johnson (1980) à l’enseignement-apprentissage du lexique émotionnel sémantiquement imprédictible, mais métaphoriquement motivé. L’article présente le déroulement et les résultats d’une courte expérimentation didactique menée au sein d’un groupe d’étudiants de licence en philologie romane. L’expérimentation questionne l’efficacité de l’approche socio-affective et socio-cognitive qui a eu pour but non seulement le développement des compétences lexicales, rédactionnelles et créatives mais aussi le tissage de liens affectifs entre les étudiants eux-mêmes, et entre l’enseignante et les étudiants durant le confinement dû au COVID-19 et l’enseignement-apprentissage en ligne. L’auteure propose un parcours didactique autour d’activités réflexives et celles d’écriture créative, intégrant respectivement le lexique émotionnel. L’expérimentation a démontré que le fait d’être conscient de la motivation métaphorique des expressions idiomatiques relatives aux émotions permet aux apprenants de mieux mémoriser, utiliser et organiser le lexique étudié ainsi que d’être plus créatifs. Malgré les avantages incontestables de l’approche présentée, son potentiel didactique devrait être testé à long terme et avec un plus grand nombre d’apprenants.

Abstract:

AbstractGustav Gröber (1844–1911), Professor of Romance Philology at the Universities of Zurich, Breslau (Wrocław) and Strasbourg, went down in the annals of his discipline for the founding of the «Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie» (1877), which exists still today. Gröber’s merits have been appreciated by the writers of his obituaries, but as he has destroyed his personal papers prior to his death, we know little about his professional environment. The present article evaluates more than six-hundred letters which Gröber wrote to certain peers and traces back the period of time the «Zeitschrift» needed to consolidate and gain international reputation.

Abstract:

2017 begann das eindrucksvolle Unternehmen einer historisch-kritischen Werkausgabe der Schriften Uwe Johnsons mit dem 1959 erschienenen Roman Mutmassungen über Jakob. Auch wenn 3 Jahre nach der Druckausgabe eine digitale Version zur Verfügung stehen wird,1 ist sie philologisch eher klassisch-traditionell strukturiert (was zur online-Präsentation kein Widerspruch ist, vergegenwärtigt man sich den rasanten Einzug der Digital Humanities in die klassische Philologie). Ungewöhnlich ist die Tatsache, dass einem Werk aus der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine solche Würdigung erfährt. Die nun kurz hintereinander erschienenen Bände 4 und 5 edieren weitere Werke aus Johnsons ,,Frühzeit“, wie bisweilen, eher abwertend, formuliert wird. Karsch, und andere Prosa mag vielleicht noch als Titel in der literarischen Öffentlichkeit oder wenigstens in der universitären Literaturwissenschaft präsent sein, Zwei Ansichten sind auch das nicht einmal mehr, nicht einmal in der aktuellen germanistischen Diskussion.2 Dies mag auch daran liegen, dass Johnson in der Diskussion noch immer weitgehend auf sein Hauptwerk festgeschrieben ist. Zwei Ansichten ist vielleicht das Werk Johnsons, welches am wenigsten Anerkennung fand, unverstanden auch in den Jahren nach seinem Erscheinen blieb.3 Stärker als die anderen Romane und Erzählungen der Jahre zwischen 1959 und 1965 thematisiert Zwei Ansichten die Realitäten, auch mentalen, beider Deutschland in der ersten Phase nach dem Mauerbau. Dass Christa Wolfs Der geteilte Himmel (1963), der sich ja kaum ohne Bezüge zu den Mutmassungen lesen lässt, in der BRD wohlwollendere Aufnahme fand, mag daran liegen, dass man in der BRD Johnson Sympathien für die DDR unterstellte, Wolfs Roman jedoch unverständlicherweise als Werk einer Dissidentin lesen wollte. Werke von Dissidenten, Kritik an der DDR wollte ein breiteres Publikum hören, aber keine Versuche, die doppelte deutsche Realität literarisch zu erfassen.4 Dass die Jahrestage, ebenfalls zunächst heftiger Kritik und wohl beabsichtigtem Unverständnis ausgesetzt, inzwischen zu einem, vielleicht dem Jahrhundertroman zu zählen sind, ist heute kaum mehr bestreitbar. Was zunächst von dem einen oder anderen als formale und vor allem sprachliche Extravaganzen aufgefasst wurde, ist vielleicht der tiefere Grund, warum dieses Werk 50 Jahre nach seinem Erscheinen noch immer den Leser packt, vor Frische und Klarheit, so möchte man fast formulieren, nur so strotzt. Wer sich, vielleicht ohne jahrzehntelang mehr einen Blick hineingeworfen zu haben, heute diesem Text nähert, wird erstaunt sein, wie sehr auch Zwei Ansichten, das doch so stark an die so fernliegenden Zeiten – und Mentalitäten – gebunden ist, ebenfalls den Leser zu packen versteht, gerade in der so stark kritisierten Sprachform, dass er sich bisweilen mitgerissen fühlt.
