Abstract:
Drawing on writings of the German Romantic tradition, Werner Hamacher’s aphoristic Minima Philologica develops a philosophy of philology, one operating without the control mechanisms of instrumentalized thought but not without internal rigor. Hamacher conceives philology as an art of (slow) reading bound to the spirit of experiment and linguistic play. Versed in the conventions and operations of literature in order to do it justice, philology nevertheless speaks in another voice, one more ascetic and conjectural. Having broken with the positivism of the Alexandrian tradition of philologia, this other philology plays the trickster in humanistic disciplines. Its task today is twofold: to unmask the industrial manufacture of language, complicit as it is with hostility to the word; and, as remedy for reification, to reawaken the philia in philology by cultivating—with historically informed critical vigilance—the power of affect, the mimetic power, in language and discourse.

Abstract:
In the present paper, we offer a glimpse at a classic, canonical book on philology (namely Initiation à la philologie française, by N.N. Condeescu, published in 1969) and at its (ir)relevance against the backdrop of the evolution of philological studies from the 1970s to the language and literature studies of the new millennium. The article is therefore a reflection on philology (a term as vague in Romanian as it is in French) and on its scope of application in Romania.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper addresses the question of software preservation by approaching this field from a philologic perspective. Philology here is not understood as hermeneutic operation of interpretation, but rather as practice of preserving material objects: critically providing them as basis for future investigation. Software’s status as a material object could not be more uncertain, since it merges - as a source code - a textual dimension and - as a programme - a processual dimension. It is only within the logic of this operativity that software as an object of digital materiality becomes fully conceivable. Since a philology of software would have to consider the phenomenon’s dual mode of existence as static text and/or time-critical process to enable research within both dimensions, old questions about what to preserve and how to preserve it rise anew. The paper will therefore take up a few basic notions of traditional scholarly editing, the software of philology. It explores to what extent they can be applied to objects of digital materiality in order to outline an initial idea of a philology of software.

Beghini, Andrea. "L'Axiochos pseudo-platonicien : introduction, texte critique, traduction et commentaire." Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PSLEP016.

Full text
Abstract:
The object of this thesis is a Greek apocryphal dialogue, the Axiochus, which has been transmitted among Plato’s works. One of the few certainties about it is that it is not by Plato, but quite later. In the introduction I outlined in seven chapters a general exposition of the main problems of this text. The first chapter deals both with some moments of the fortune of the Axiochus in the cultural history of Europe and with a synthetic history of the studies on this dialogue from the XV century up to nowadays. The aim of this chapter is to show how the problems noted by the scholars have been already perceived during the process of reception of this work. The second chapter is devoted to the exam of the many problems of composition and argumentative coherence of the dialogue. My conclusion is that the Axiochus is not the product of an incapable and unskilled man, as someone has maintained, but it is an unfinished work. In the third chapter I have discussed the main problem of argumentative coherence of the dialogue, that is the strange position of the textual section which goes from 369b6 to 370b1. In fact, I think that this portion of the text should have been placed after 365e2. Clearly, it has been accidentally misplaced. The reason of this accident is that the author had written each section of the dialogue on a different sheet. However, the work has been published only after the author’s death by a redactor who has confused the right order of the sheets. In the fourth chapter I have examined the much disputed problem of the sources of the Axiochus. Actually, in the past some scholars have maintained that the anonymous depends from a single source, which has been identified with Crantor of Soloi or with Posidonius of Apamea. On the contrary, I think that the anonymous depends from many different sources, maybe with the mediation of repertories of traditional arguments which were in use in the schools of rhetoric. The fifth chapter deals with the problem of the historical and cultural contest where the dialogue has been composed. Thanks to a meticulous comparison with the first book of Cicero’s Tusculanae disputationes, I noticed a remarkable amount of similarities between these two texts. I mean not only similarities in the content, but also in the structure of the argumentation and in the philosophical orientation. It is a phenomenon that can be easily explained by supposing that the Axiochus and Cicero have been influenced by the same cultural context, which is the Academy of Philo of Larissa. In the sixth chapter, I have discussed some aspects of the literary technique of the anonymous. Finally, in the very short seventh chapter I have suggested the possibility of attributing this dialogue to Philo himself. This general introduction is followed by the critical edition with the Italian translation, preceded by a long study of the manuscript tradition. Actually, for the first time the critical text is based on a complete exam of the known witnesses, which has brought me to a better understanding of the relationships between the manuscripts along with establishing more solid fundaments for the text. The edition and the translation are followed by a long commentary organised by lemmas. It is a comprehensive commentary, even if the discussion of textual problems is predominant. The work ends with the bibliography

Hallen, Cynthia Leah. "Philology as rhetoric in Emily Dickinson's poems." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185586.

Full text
Abstract:
Philology, or the love of words, is a source of power in Emily Dickinson's poems. Noah Webster's dictionary was a storehouse of philological knowledge and thus a major source of linguistic power for Dickinson. Her poems show that philology is an effective way to compose and interpret texts, and that paying attention to words is a source of rhetorical power for readers and writers today. The first six chapters of the dissertation feature aspects of Dickinson's philology from the perspective of nineteenth-century rhetoric: Definition, Music, Cohesion, Dictionary Use, and Etymology. Chapter One tells the story of Emily's "Lexicon" and "Noah's Ark." Chapter Two discusses definition as a rhetorical strategy and presents a definition of terms. Chapter Three explores music as rhetorical power in the themes, prosody, and sound patterns, syntax, and lexis of Dickinson's poems. The cohesion of Dickinson's lexical choices is the focus of Chapter Four. Chapter Five focuses more intently the role of the Lexicon in Dickinson's composing processes. The role of etymology in Webster's lexicography and in Dickinson's poetry is the subject of Chapter Six. Chapter Seven uses A. L. Becker's definitions of a new philology to discuss the function of philology in contemporary English studies.

Abstract:
Digital technologies are constantly changing our daily lives, including the way scholars work. As a result, also Classics is currently subject to constant change. Greek and Latin sources are becoming available in a digital format. The result is that Classical texts are searchable and can be provided with metadata and analyzed to find specific structures. An important keyword in this new scholarly environment is “networking”, because there is a great potential for Classical Philology to collaborate with the Digital Humanities in creating useful tools for textual work. During our workshop scholars who represent several academic disciplines and institutions gathered to talk about their projects. We invited Digital Humanists who have experience with specific issues in Classical Philology and who presented methods and outcomes of their research. In order to enable intensive and efficient work concerning various topics and projects, the workshop was aimed at philologists whose research interests focus on specific phenomena of ancient texts (e.g., similes or quotations). The challenge of extracting and annotating textual data like similes and text reuses poses the same type of practical philological problems to Classicists. Therefore, the workshop provided insight in two main ways: First, in an introductory theoretical section, DH experts presented keynote lectures on specific topics; second, the focus of the workshop was to discuss project ideas with DH experts to explore and explain possibilities for digital implementation, and ideally to offer a platform for potential cooperation. The focus was explicitly on working together to explore ideas and challenges, based also on concrete practical examples. As a result of the workshop, some of the participants agreed on publishing online their abstracts and slides in order to share them with the community of Classicists and Digital Humanists. The publication has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Open Science Office of the Library of the University of Leipzig.

Abstract:
The geographical lexicon of Stephen of Byzantium, called in abbreviated form Ethnika, brings together the "géonymes" with a derivative form, as defined by ancient grammarians (ethnic, female, ktetika ...). It is the subject here of a careful reading, analyzing in particular the variable reduction rate according to the parts of the work (probably originally divided into 60 books). The precise analysis identifies several periods aggregation of information, the most important from a source-lexicon dated around the middle of the second century AD. The study mentions the corpus relating to Western Europe (minus Italy) refines the information back to the Greek writers and gives new comprehension on certain information. It is therefore possible to better contextualize "géonymes" cited by Stephen of Byzantium

Abstract:
Sound recordings have proven to be irreplaceable primary sources for disciplines like linguistics, musicology, ethnomusicology and sociology. Their fragile physical nature has activated a number of counter-actions aimed at prolonging the life expectancy of their content. Methodological issues have been raised in the past three decades, considering the relationship between the physical object and its (digitized) intangible content, which is not only complex but develops over time. This article re ects on the role of the emerging discipline known as ‘digital philology’ in the long- term preservation of audio documents, pointing out how some concepts (such as authenticity, reliability and accuracy) may require a ‘customized’ (as opposed to a ‘ready-made’) approach in the preservation work ow – mainly depending on the type of the archive: unique copies, eld recordings, electronic music, oral history, to name some representative cases. The set-up of the laboratory for sound preservation at the Centro di Sonologia Computazionale (CSC) of the University of Padova, Italy, represents one customized approach in which conscious methodological decisions support philologically informed digitization e orts. The methods affect the results, and ultimately the consequences are not merely technological but cultural.
