As midwifery students, it is imperative for us to formulate our own midwifery philosophy to guide our future practice. When asked to reflect on this at university through a creative medium, I was initially challenged by my self-perceived lack of artistic creativity. However, I have forever been moved by linguistics, and have identified with poems, think-pieces and song lyrics; hence, I was compelled to write poetry. My poem, We Are Midwives, utilises symbolism, metaphors and imagery to convey the journey of pregnancy – pre to postnatal – through the eyes of a midwife.
