Abstract:
The authors adopt a critico‐sociological methodology to investigate the current state of the philosophical profession. According to them, the question concerning the status of philosophy (“What is philosophy?”) cannot be answered from within the precinct of philosophical reason alone, since philosophy—understood primarily as a profession—is marked by a constitutive type of self‐ignorance that prevents it from reflecting upon its own sociological conditions of actuality. This ignorance, which is both cause and effect of the organization and investment of philosophical desire, causes philosophers to lose themselves in an ideological myth (“the philosopher as idea(l)”) according to which philosophers are unaffected by the material conditions in which they exist. This myth prevents philosophers from noticing the extent to which their activity is influenced by extra‐philosophical determinants that shape, empirically, who becomes a professional philosopher (“the philosopher as imago”) and who doesn't. This article explores the relationship between philosophy's “idea(l)” and its “imago” as a way of shedding light on some of the mechanisms that make philosophy inhospitable for so many women, people of color, and economic minorities.

Abstract:
In the last two decades, the greatest threat to armchair philosophy has been the natural kinds approach. On this view, philosophic theorizing should not be obsessed with the ideas of justice, goodness, and truth but should look outward to the world of objects to find these things. And if these things happen to be natural kinds, like kinds of rock or fish for instance, then clearly we should reject the armchair for the lab. The philosopher should leave the office and join the scientist out in the field. Philosophy should become a species of science. We attempt to defend traditional/armchair philosophy by examining Hilary Kornblith’s naturalistic methodological approach to epistemology. Among other things, we argue that Kornblith’s approach leads to some surprising, undesirable results (at least undesirable to the naturalist), one of which is that Kornblith cannot discount epistemic internalism as a viable contender in the search for the nature of knowledge. His methodology actually requires that we take epistemic internalism seriously.

Abstract:
Ecological economics has been repeatedly described as transdisciplinary and open to including everything from positivism to relativism. I argue for a revision and rejection of this position in favour of realism and reasoned critique. Looking into the ontological presuppositions and considering an epistemology appropriate for ecological economics to meaningfully exist requires rejecting the form of methodological pluralism which has been advocated since the start of this journal. This means being clear about the differences in our worldview (or paradigm) from others and being aware of the substantive failures of orthodox economics in addressing reality. This paper argues for a fundamental review of the basis upon which ecological economics has been founded and in so doing seeks improved clarity as to the competing and complementary epistemologies and methodologies. In part this requires establishing serious interdisciplinary research to replace superficial transdisciplinary rhetoric. The argument places the future of ecological economics firmly amongst heterodox economic schools of thought and in ideological opposition to those supporting the existing institutional structures perpetuating a false reality of the world's social, environmental and economic systems and their operation. Markey, Bren April. "Feminist methodologies in moral philosophy." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/9107.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis develops a critique of the methodology of mainstream academic moral philosophy, based on insights from feminist and more generally anti-oppressive political thought. The thesis consists of two parts. In the first, I loosely characterise a certain dominant methodology of philosophy, one based on giving an important epistemological role to existing, 'pre-theoretical' moral attitudes, such as intuitions. I then argue that such methodologies may be critiqued on the basis of theories that identify these moral attitudes as problematically rooted in oppressive social institutions, such as patriarchy and white supremacy; that is, I identify these attitudes as ideological, and so a poor guide to moral reality. In the second part, I identify and explore of a number of themes and tendencies from feminist, anti-racist, and other anti-oppressive traditions of research and activism, in order to draw out the implications of these themes for the methodology of moral philosophy. The first issue I examine is that of how, and how much, moral philosophers should use abstraction; I eventually use the concept of intersectionality to argue for the position that philosophers need to use less, and a different type of, abstraction. The second major theme I examine is that of ignorance, in the context of alternative epistemologies: standpoint epistemology and epistemologies of ignorance. I argue that philosophers must not take themselves to be well placed to understand, using solitary methodologies, any topic of moral interest. Finally, I examine the theme of transformation in moral philosophy. I argue that experiencing certain kinds of personal transformation may be an essential part of developing accurate ethical views, and I draw out the political implications of this position for the methodology of moral philosophy.

Fallago, Christopher A. "An evaluation of the methodology, and philosophy used in biological (holistic) dentistry." Thesis, Boston University, 2012. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/12369.

This paper aims to evaluate the major alternative methods and practices recommended by biological dentists. The evaluation is based upon the most current research available. This paper will also evaluate the quality and quantity ofresearch or procedures that the claims are based upon. Biological dentistry, also known as holistic dentistry, as defined by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) is an alternative approach to dentistry that promotes the use of biocompatible dental materials and a whole body approach to oral health. Three specific topics will be addressed. The first, and perhaps the most widely recognized, is the controversy surrounding dental amalgam, with the IAOMT declaring amalgam as toxic and calling for removal of asymptomatic fillings and banning its use as a dental material. The second is the IAOMT's stance on water fluoridation. The IAOMT believes that water fluoridation is dangerous and the only acceptable level of fluoride in drinking water is zero. The last topic is the alternative methodology used in endodontic treatment. The IAOMT claims that mercury release from dental amalgam is associated with dysfunction ofthe immune system, multiple sclerosis, kidney ailments, chronic fatigue syndrome Alzheimer's disease and a myriad ofother health issues. This is their reasoning for recommending the removal of asymptomatic amalgam fillings, a procedure they claim a regular dentist is not properly trained for. While it is true that mercury vapor is continually released from dental amalgam, the absorbed concentration is well below any threshold toxic value. Clinical trials, and peer reviewed scientific studies demonstrate that dental amalgam is not associated with many of the adverse health effects as stated by the IAOMT. The only established risk is a rare delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction in individuals with metal allergies. Much of the early published research attempting to determine daily-absorbed dose from oral air concentrations of mercury vapor is flawed. This has resulted in erroneous and inflated estimates of daily mercury dosages as high as 29 µg per day. It is the erroneous research, much of which was also funded by the IAOMT that is used to support the IAOMT's stance. Newer estimates, confirmed by peer review, ofboth oral Hg air concentrations as well as urine Hg concentrations put the exposure estimate at a much lower range of 1-5 µg/day. Confusion also lies in the fact that the Reference Exposure Levels are based on a small sample exposed to an unknown mercury vapor concentration. [TRUNCATED]

Abstract:
The article discusses the problem of the actor of collective representations in the comparative history of philosophy. It is proposed to emphasize the status of a researcher in comparative methodology and, thus, move from a dialogue of cultures (within the framework of the philosophy of culture) to an interdisciplinary dialogue (within the framework of the history of philosophy and historiography). Along with that historian of philosophy is considered as an actor of collective representations, transforming meanings and concepts based on the attitudes of national culture.

Ivanyshyn, Petro. BASIC CONCEPTS OF YEVHEN MALANIUK’S NATIONAL-PHILOSOPHICAL INTERPRETATION: ESEISTIC DISCOURSE. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11070.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the research is to outline the structure of the main methodological ideas within the frames of interpretive thinking in the essay of the famous Vistnyk’s writer, critic and essayist Yevhen Malaniuk. Considering the purpose and tasks of the studio, an interdisciplinary methodological base, related to the author’s “national approach”, has been worked out. The epistemological potential of national philosophy as a philosophy of national existence, national science as a theory of nation, hermeneutics as a theory and practice of interpretation and post-colonialism as interpretation of cultural phenomena from the standpoint of anti- and post-imperial consciousness are used in the work. The scientific novelty is that on the basis of the previous hermeneutic generalization and definition of national-existential methodology, a propaedeutic outlining of the structure of national-philosophical concepts within the frames of the essayistic interpretation of reality in Ye. Malaniuk is proposed. In the methodological sense, the writer’s essayism is structured by such concepts as nation-centrism, idealism, voluntarism, heroism, and can be considered as one of the variants (close by the experiences of D. Dontsov, Yu. Lypa, M. Mukhyn, etc.) of the Vistnyk’s national-philosophical (national-existential, nationalistic or nation-centric) hermeneutics, that is, the way of understanding, which the author by himself outlined as a “national approach”. The support of Ye. Malaniuk as a culture-philosopher and exegete on the eternal nation-centric values and criteria in his essayistic studies makes his reflections not only historically interesting, but also theoretically productive, classically important for the development of modern Ukrainian hermeneutics and humanities in general.
