The laboratory-scale University of Cape Town (UCT) process was designed to investigate the effects of changing COD/TP ratios on the performance of biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes. Specific objectives of the research were to investigate the effects of COD/TP ratio on the rates of phosphorus removal, COD removal, nitrogen removal, PHB utilization and oxygen uptake. The system was fed with municipal wastewater and operated at 20° C. The influent COD concentration was held approximately constant while the phosphorus concentration was varied to obtained the desired COD/TP ratio. Once r

It is commonly assumed that the N:P ratio of a terrestrial plant reflects the relative availability of N and P in the soil in which the plant grows. Here it was assessed for a tropical pioneer tree, Ficus insipida. Seedlings were grown in sand and irrigated with nutrient solutions containing N:P ratios ranging from < 1 to > 100. The experimental design further allowed investigation of physiological responses to N and P availability. Homeostatic control over N:P ratios was stronger in leaves than in stems or roots, suggesting that N:P ratios of stems and roots are more sensitive indicators

Soil organic matter is important as storage for carbon and nutrients, supporting soil structure, and as a filter for pollutants entering the soil ecosystem. The recovery of soil organic matter in depleted soils can take decades, or even hundreds of years. However, some recent studies have suggested that fertiliser addition to pasture soils may contribute to decreases in soil carbon content. My hypotheses were: 1. In order to produce the right CIE coordinates for the needs of customers, LED packaging manufacturers need to test different phosphor to find out the best ratio of during the dispensing process. This study collects data from dispensing production process. A statistical analysis is applied to distinguish the important factors that would influence the ratio of phosphor. Finally, the BPN is deployed to construct the PRP system for LED components. Thi

Tese de doutoramento em Engenharia Química e Biológica<br>Sanitary landfilling is the most used and accepted method to eliminate municipal solid waste worldwide due to its economic advantages. The generation of leachate is an inevitable consequence of this practice. Landfill leachate is a high-strength wastewater with great chemical complexity and diversity. In order to avoid discharges to the environment causing negative impacts to the biota or public health, it must be properly collected and treated before being discharged. In Portugal, in many leachate treatment plants, the leachate after

In organic light-emitting diode (OLED),holes and electrons injected from the anode and cathode can recombine to yield singlet fraction (χS) of 25% according to quantum statistics and some experiments. However, for polymer light-emitting diodes (PLED), this fraction still remains under debate. Therefore, it is extremely important for us to clarify χS in the PLED and investigate its relation with

Lamberts, Jill S. "Nutrient release and cycling in the soils of a continental lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Doug.) ecosystem, Bootleg Mountain, B.C." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/46.

Abstract:
Nutrient dynamics in a lodgepole pine forest at Bootleg Mountain, B.C., were investigated through the sampling of soil, snow and groundwater in six one-ha blocks. Nitrogen (NO3-, NH4+, TIN, TDN, TN), phosphorus (PO43-, TDP, TP), and DOC were analyzed in addition to N mineralization and nitrification. Position and dispersion statistics were computed for each variable and correlations (Pearson and Spearman) were computed for each pair of variables. The overall heterogeneities of soil, snow, and groundwater were generally lower between 1-ha blocks than between plots. Productivity in the soil
