Abstract:
The problem of water pollution has been an environmental concern for many years. Numerous researchers are looking for an effective method to solve this issue. Heterogeneous photocatalysis, using a semiconductor as a catalyst, is a promising method for the destruction of water polluting pesticides. This method has been called the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) which is one of the techniques for water treatment. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most widely accepted photocatalyst because it is non-toxic, stable to photocorrosion, low cost and can potentially work using sunlight rather than artifi

Titanium Dioxide (TiO 2) has been considered an ideal photocatalyst due to factors such as its photocatalytic properties, chemical stability, impact on the environment and cost. However, its application has been primarily limited to ultraviolet (UV) environments due to its high band gap (3.2 eV). This high band gap limits the harvesting of photons to approximately 4% of sunlight radiation. Research today is focused on lowering this gap by doping or coupling TiO 2 with other semiconductors, transition metals and non-metal anions, thereby expanding its effectiveness well into the visible range

Abstract:
Over the past decade, heterogeneous photocatalysis have gained lots of interest and attention among the organic chemistry community due to its applicability as an alternative to its homogeneous counterpart. Heterogeneous catalysis offers the advantages of easy separation and reusability of the catalyst. Several studies showed that under optimized conditions, efficient and highly selective catalytic systems could be developed using supported metal/metal oxide nanoparticles. In this dissertation, we summarize the progress in the development of supported palladium nanoparticles for different type

Photocatalysis is recently extensively studied because it implies a variety of potential industrial applications ranging from the hydrogen generation of water splitting to the treatment of waste water. Among all the semiconductors, TiO2 has attracted the most attention. But the rate of the electron-hole recombinations is very important and TiO2 is active only under UV light. Various methods are developed to enhance the photoactivity of TiO2. Other semiconductors like copper oxides and copper sulfides also attracted attention due to their lower band-gaps which allow applications in solar photoc

The exploration in the use of nanomaterials for a multitude of different applications has grown within the last few years. This is largely due to the vast number of features exhibited by nanoscale materials when compared to their bulk counterparts. The use of nanomaterials in environmental applications can come in different facets, such as, the production of clean energy in solar cells and the application of nanotechnologies in coatings for building exterior surfaces. The first section of the thesis focuses on the use of nanomaterials for water remediation, since purified groundwater is still

This project was a step forward in developing new effective photocatalysts for fine organic synthesis under visible light irradiation. These kind of new photocatalysts are able to facilitate reaction rates by using visible light under moderate reaction conditions through a green, economical and environmentally friendly pathway. This thesis investigated the catalyst synthesis, characterization and the application in organic reactions with high activity and selectivity. The discovery of these new metal nanoparticle photocatalysts may inspire further studies on other efficient photocatalysts and

Abstract: With the worldwide dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels and increasing concerns over their impact on our planet through greenhouse gas emissions finding an alternative source of clean energy is a global imperative. The solar energy is one source of renewable energy resources, and It has the highest potential to contribute substantially to the future of carbon-free power needs. Solar to hydrogen has attracted much attention in the past decade due to its abundance and the spotlessness of hydrogen as fuel for energy usage. However, practically the requirements to convert sol
