This thesis focuses on the application of a Keldysh-type approach (KTA) using the adiabatic saddle-point method to describe multiphoton detachment of negative ions by few-cycle mid-infrared laser pulses. The physical phenomena investigated in this thesis include direct photodetachment, orbital alignment of the residual atom and high-energy photoelectron rescattering. Abstract:

A simple analytic formula for the photodetachment cross section of H$\sp{-}$ in perpendicular electric and magnetic fields is obtained. Oscillations in the spectrum are predicted by the formula, and these oscillations are correlated with closed classical orbits. We point out that the quantum mechanical derivation, using a stationary phase approximation, is in complete agreement with the three-dimensional semiclassical solution to the problem.

Results are presented for Floquet calculations of photodetachment rates from a one-dimensional model atom irradiated by intense laser light. Light-induced quasibound states are found to originate from the movement of poles of the multichannel scattering matrix on the Riemann energy surface. Molecular and cluster anions have been investigated using photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy to study the nature of electrons in radical species. We report a negative-ion photoelectron imaging study of benzonitrile and several of its hydrated, oxygenated, and homo-molecularly solvated cluster anions. The photodetachment transition from the unsolvated benzonitrile anion to the X̃¹A₁ state of the neutral peaks at 58 ± 5 meV.
