Abstract:
Fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra, fluorescence and phosphorescence quantum yields and phosphorescence lifetimes of the benzologues I -V of thiophene have been measured in ethanol at 77 K. By comparing the energies of the lowest triplet states of the molecules with those of corresponding hydrocarbons it is concluded that the sulphur atoms act like substituents and are not equivalent to aromatic double bonds. The rate of the radiationless deactivation of the lowest triplet state depends on the energy gap Δ E(T1 - S0) in accordance with the Siebrand relation. An unexpected small intraannullar heavy-atom effect of the sulphur is observed in 2,2′-bis-benzo[b]thienyl (II), a strongly fluorescing compound. As the most likely explanation it is concluded from experiments that in II the interaction between the heavy-atom and the π-MO’s of the hydrocarbon fragment (1,4-biphenylbutadiene) is much smaller compared to that in other structurally related benzologues of thiophene. External heavy-atom perturbers (AgClO4, CH3J) have a strong influence on the vibronic structure of the phosphorescence spectrum of IV.

By activation of the new host lattice Ca3La2Te2O12 with trivalent rare earth ions an emission in the visible (Ln3+=Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) or near infrared region (Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) is observed. Energy transfer from Nd3+ to Yb3+ , from Er3+, Yb3+ to Ho3+ and from Yb3+ to Tm3+ has been found to occur. The excitation, emission and diffuse reflectance spectra are analyzed.

Abstract:
AbstractThe UV induced photoluminescence (PL) of activated and reduced surface molybdenum compounds on silica gel has been studied at various concentrations of the products under He and Ar and at various temperatures from R.T. to 10 K. With the activated molybdenum(VI) compounds, four different types of broad band emissions were observed and assigned to definite surface species of Mo(VI): A blue PL occurring mainly at T > -90 °C, two "white" emissions with different spectral excitation regions and Stokes shifts appearing very strongly under He or vacuum below T < -90 °C and a yellow PL occurring with the products under Ar, N2 or C02 instead of the "white" ones. While the blue PL was ascribed to an octahedrally coordinated surface species (Moc1), the two "white" emissions were attributed to two tetrahedrally coordinated surface species, the first one (MoX1) being monomeric and bonded directly to the surface, the second one (Mo^1) being bonded to a polymolybdate cluster and excited via that cluster; the yellow PL was postulated to originate from a MOB1-Ar Van der Waals complex. At 10 K the "white" PL of the polymeric MOB1 species showed a faint vibronic fine structure; the emission time constant was measured to be 5 ms. With the reduced compounds, only one PL was observed attributable to the monomeric MoX1 species. Hence this species was concluded to be the only one not or not completely being reducible.
