Abstract In comparison to the contributions that address interlingual phraseological equivalence, the number of papers about the topic of phraseological false friends is relatively low. This is probably explained by the fact that this is a marginal phenomenon from a quantitative point of view. Nonetheless, there are relevant contributions in the field of foreign German Studies. The aim of this article is, on the one hand, to discuss theoretical questions about tertium comparationis and terminology and, on the other hand, to develop a classification of the types of potential phraseological fals

This article starts from the hypothesis that the French verb raconter (to tell) has but one meaning, i.e. “to narrate”, according to Le Brio. Initially, this apparent monosemy did not seem to be very questionable. However, Dubois and Dubois-Charlier’s 1997 etymology and classification of French verbs partially contests this first intuition. The dictionary of Dubois & Dubois-Charlier (1997), in particular, establishes three subclasses for the verb’s meanings: Tell 01: ‘describe a scene’; Tell 02: ‘tell, tell a story’; Tell 03: ‘tell lies’. One of the predominant features of phrasal verbs is that the meaning of the same verb can change beyond recognition or become opposite in combination with different postpositions.
