Abstract:
Cette etude linguistique a pour theme la phraseologie et la terminologie du discours economique allemand. Nous analysons la phraseologie dans son emploi vivant au sein d'un corpus didactique. Le domaine economique retenu est celui de la theorie macro-economique. Ce travail debouche sur une application didactique : un glossaire thematique de la phraseologie economique. L'etude se situe a l'intersection de deux disciplines, la terminologie et la phraseologie. Elle se concentre sur les unites linguistiques polylexicales figees et figurees ayant une fonction denominative. Une analyse lineaire du texte a permis de degager 30 termes vecteurs des notions - cles de la theorie macro-economique et se revelant simultanement generateurs de phrasemes. Nous decouvrons a travers et au fil du texte des reseaux associatifs de termes qui permettent de degager la structure thematique du glossaire. Nous demontrons la contribution active des phrasemes a la coherence du texte et a la mise en texte et mise en discours du savoir specialise. Une place importante est reservee a l'analyse des phrasemes iconiques lies aux modeles iconiques universels
This study focusses on the terminology and the phraseology of the german economic discourse. The phraseology is analysed in its live use within a technical corpus introducing the theory of macroeconomics. Using the results of this study, a didactic application has been made : a thematic glossary of the economical phraseology. This study lies at the intersection fo two disciplines, terminology and phraseology. It focusses on the freezed and figurative polylexic al linguistic units which have a denominative function. A linear analysis of the text yields 30 terms carrying key-notio ns of the macroeconomic theory and generating phrasems. Associate networks of terms can be discovered along the text and allow for the building of the thematic structure of the glossary. We show the active contribution of phrasems to the text coherence and to the setting intext and in discoure of the knowledge of the specialty. A special interest is given to the analysis of iconic phrasems which are related to the universal iconic models

Abstract:
The present study is intended to contribute to a deeper insight in the field of nomination for commercial purposes by means of phraseological units. The article focusses on French names of restaurants and stores, which can be considered at the intersection of brand names, as they have much in common with their functions, and names of settlements. The investigation reveals that phrasemes are not only widely used in advertising in general, but that their occurrence in nomination deserves more attention. These reflections lead us to the term of “phraseonymy”, a phenomenon that ought to be studied at a larger scale, including other romance languages and also considering the recipient’s perspective.

F. E. Peters stellt in seiner Studie Überlegungen zur Idiomatik und Phraseologie des Plattdeutschen an, der Muttersprache des Schriftstellers. Er plädiert dafür, das Plattdeutsche in seiner Besonderheit und unabhängig von Vergleichen mit dem Hochdeutschen zu bewerten und zu würdigen. Kürze, Prägnanz, Anschaulichkeit und intuitive Treffsicherheit des Plattdeutschen werden hervorgehoben und anhand von Beispielen aus dem Alltag belegt. Peters unterstreicht die sich in dem Bewahren von Formeln ausdrückende „einfältige Sprachfrömmigkeit“ des Plattdeutschen, für ihn ein Zeichen junger und primitiverer Sprachen, gewissermaßen „Sprach-Marionetten“ im Kleistschen Sinn ausgestattet mit der Anmut des Unbewussten.

Die vorliegende Dissertation widmet sich dem Thema Synonymie im besonderen Fall der phraseologischen Einheiten. Es handelt sich um eine korpusbasierte, empirische Untersuchung, die sich insbesondere mit der Frage beschäftigt, ob und inwiefern es möglich ist, sich typisch semantischen Kategorien wie Bedeutung, Idiomatizität, Bildlichkeit etc. über die Untersuchung typischer Verwendungsmuster zu nähern. Diese Themenstellung motiviert sich aus bisher in der linguistischen Literatur strittigen grundsätzlichen Aspekten der Diskussion um Bedeutung und Synonymie: Sie ist zum einen als Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis des Verhältnisses zwischen Verwendungsdaten und Bedeutung sowie zum Status traditioneller wörterbuchähnlicher Bedeutungsangaben innerhalb einer gebrauchsbasierten Semantik gedacht: Zum anderen geht es darum, detaillierte Erkenntnisse über die Übertragbarkeit des Konzepts Synonymie von Einzellexemen auf phraseologische Einheiten zu gewinnen. Unter der Annahme, dass menschliches Lernen bzw. Erschließen von Bedeutung primär empirisch funktioniert, ist die Analyse der Breite der Varianz des tatsächlichen kontextuellen Verhaltens phraseologischer Einheiten bei gleicher oder ähnlicher Bedeutung dazu geeignet, detaillierte Erkenntnisse über die Korrelation zwischen Bedeutungs- und Verwendungsaspekten sowie über den Einfluss phraseologiespezifischer Eigenschaften zu gewinnen. Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung ist eine Gruppe phraseologischer Einheiten, die in Wörterbüchern als bedeutungsähnlich bzw. synonym klassifiziert werden. Unter diesen phraseologischen Einheiten finden sich Ausdrücke unterschiedlicher Bildlichkeit, Idiomatizität und morphosyntaktischer Struktur, von denen einige aus mehreren Inhaltswörtern bestehen, wie etwa jmd. schüttelt etw. aus dem Ärmel, jmd. hat etw. mit der Muttermilch eingesogen und jmd. weiß Bescheid, während andere lediglich Verbindungen eines Inhaltswortes mit einem oder mehreren Funktionswörtern und dem Verb haben oder sein darstellen. Zur letzteren Gruppe gehören unter anderem Ausdrücke wie jmd. hat das Zeug zu etw., jmd. ist auf Zack und jmd. ist vom Fach. Diese Heterogenität der zu untersuchenden Ausdrücke bezüglich ihres phraseologischen Status macht sie zu einem geeigneten Gegenstand der differenzierten Betrachtung der Rolle phraseologiespezifischer Eigenschaften für die Beschreibung von Bedeutung und Synonymie. Die Untersuchung besteht im ersten Schritt in einer detaillierten Annotation aller Vorkommenskontexte der phraseologischen Einheiten im Korpus des DWDS (Berlin-Brandeburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, www.dwds.de) auf Basis einer Reihe vordefinierter Analysekriterien. Aus dieser Annotation wird in einem zweiten Schritt eine Beschreibung der typischen Verwendungsmerkmale jeder einzelnen lexikalischen Einheit gewonnen. Gleichzeitig enstehen nach einer festgelegten Methode Bedeutungsbeschreibungen in Form von Paraphrasen, die auf elementare Bedeutungsbestandteile reduziert werden. Diese Bedeutungs- und Verwendungsbeschreibungen der untersuchten phraseologschen Einheiten bilden die Basis für den dritten Teil der Arbeit, in der die beiden Beschreibungsebenen aufeinander bezogen werden. Im Ergebnis zeigt die Arbeit, dass a) Zwischen Verwendung und Bedeutung lexikalischer (phraseologischer) Einheiten identifizierbare systematische Korrelationen bestehen, die einen datenzentrierten Zugang zur Untersuchung und Beschreibung lexikalischer Semantik ermöglichen. b) Innerhalb einer Gruppe von Synonymen so wie auch innerhalb einer erweiterten Menge quasisynonymer Ausdrücke jedem einzelnen Element ein eigener Platz zukommt, der dieses Element von allen anderen Elementen unterscheidet. c) Die Verwendungsdaten einer phraseologischen Einheit positive Evidenz für den individuellen Grad der Relevanz der Merkmale Festigkeit, Idiomatizität und Motiviertheit einer phraseologischen Einheit liefern.
The present Ph.D.-dissertation addresses the subject of synonymy in the special case on Multi-Word Expressions. As a corpus-based, empirical study, it focusses around the question if and how it is possible to approach semantic categories such as meaning, idiomaticity and metaphoricity by analysing the characteristic usage patterns of a lexical unit. The study is driven by basic unresolved issues in the linguistic discussion on meaning and synonymy: On the one hand, it contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between usage data and meaning as well as on the status of traditional dictionary-like definitions in empirical semantics. On the other hand, it provides detailed insights on the applicability of the linguistc concept of synonymy - as it has been discussed for single lexemes – to lexicalized Multi-Word Expressions. On the basis of the assumption that human learning and grasping of meaning is a basically empirical process, the analysis of the variability of contextual behaviour of Multi-Word Expressions with identical or similar meaning constitutes a suitable way of gaining insights on the correlation between meaning and use as well as on the influence of specific properties of Multi-Word Expressions. The study starts out from a group of phraseological units that have been classified as synonymous in German phraseological dictionaries. These expressions differ their degree of idiomaticity, metaphoricity and morphosyntactic structure. Some of them – e.g. 'jmd. schüttelt etw. aus dem Ärmel' or 'jmd. hat etw. mit der Muttermilch eingesogen' (sb. does sth. with great ease) - comprise several content words whereas others are composed of only one content word together with one or more function words and the verb 'haven' (have) or 'sein' (be) – as it is the case for 'jmd. ist auf Zack', jmd. hat das Zeug zu etw.' and 'jmd. ist vom Fach' (sb. is able/competent in sth.). Their heterogeneity makes them a very good starting point for the research on the role played by phraseology-specific properties for meaning and synonymy. As a first step, the author realizes a detailed annotation of all occurrences of the these Multi-Word Expressions in the corpus of the DWDS (Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and the Humanities, www.dwds.de), using a series of predefined analysis criteria. From this analysis, she gains a description of their typical usage traits. In parallel, a neatly defined methodology leads to a set of meaning descriptions on the basis of dictionary paraphrases that are reduced to their elementary meaning components. In the last part of the study., these meaning and usage descriptions are then correlated yielding the following conclusions: a) Between meaning descriptions and usage patterns, systematic correlations can be devised that allow a data-driven approach to the semantics of lexical units. b)Within a group of synonyms, each element has its unique place, determined by its characteristic usage patterns. c) The usage data of a multi-word unit provide positive evidence forrr the degree of idiomaticity, morphosyntactic stability and metaphoricity of the expression.

Dans ses emplois phraseologiques, le numeral developpe une serie de valeurs connotatives qui l'eloignent de sa fonction premiere, celle d'expression linguistique de la quantite discontinue. Les contextes lexicalises, au comportement semantique unitaire et figure, conferent au numeral des nuances differentes, souvent contraires 'hyperbole et litote, melioration et pejoration, addition et opposition, etc. ) en fonction de l'image sous-tendue. Certains numeraux (deux, trois, quatre, dix, quinze) cumulent une bonne partie de ces nuances, d'autres (zero, cinq, trente-six, quarante, cent, mille) se specialisent dans une palette de nuances et de sens litteraux plus restreinte. Quelques-unes des occurences phraseologiques du numeral renvoient a des sources litteraires ou historiques bien connues, a la mythologie, a la religion ou aux croyances populaires, la comparaison entre les correspondants locutionnaires dans plusieurs langues romanes revele les points communs (similarite de l'experience extra-linguistique ou circulation des expressions), ainsi que les creations originales et quelques influences exterieures au domaine roman, specifiques a chacun des lexiques
The number develops various connotational values when used in idiomatic structures. Stable lexical comibnations may confer it different contrary significations (such as "hyperbole" and "litotes", "amelior ation" and "pejoration", "summation" and "opposition", etc. ) according to the subjacent image where it appears. Some numbers (two, four, ten, fifteen) gather most of the recorded idiomatic values, while some others (zero, five, thirty-six, forty, one hundred, one thousand) specialize their meaning and always work the same semantic mechanisms. Part of the idiomatic occurences of the number come out from literary and historical sources, mythology, relion and folk believes. Comparing idiomatic correspondences throughout the roman languages sets up the common points (similar cognitive experien ce ou interlingual borrowings), as well as the original structures and influences - external to the roman area specific to each of them

Abstract:
Beim Fachtextübersetzen und in der technischen Redaktion ist die Beherrschung der korrekten Terminologie einer Fachsprache allein oft nicht ausreichend, sondern es bedarf auch des Wissens um die typische, für eine Sprache idiomatische Einbettung der Termini in den Text, z. B. in Form von Fachphraseologismen. Derartige Informationen finden sich jedoch häufig nicht in Fachwörterbüchern. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit terminologischen Phraseologismen in der medizinischen Fachsprache. Im Rahmen einer korpusbasierten Analyse wurden exemplarisch deutsche und spanische Fachphraseologismen aus einem Teilbereich der medizinischen Fachkommunikation, der Schlaganfallakuttherapie, in ihrem tatsächlichen, variantenreichen Gebrauch herausgearbeitet und in einem Glossar zusammengestellt, das als Unterstützung bei der Gestaltung von Übersetzungen sowie der technischen Redaktion entsprechender Texte dienen kann. Damit zeigt die Arbeit die Bedeutung fachphraseologischer Untersuchungen auf.

Als er beginnt, die Sprossen der sozialen Leiter zu erklimmen, wird sein Jugendfeind Jürgen Grootholm zu einem Hindernis auf dem Weg nach oben. Um ihn zu „überholen“, sich an den Vollstedtern zu rächen und die berechnende Margot Kandelhardt heiraten zu können, denunziert Heinrich Steinhagen den Konkurrenten wegen einer Urlaubsüberschreitung in der Hoffnung, dessen Beförderung zu vereiteln und leitet damit sein eigenes tragisches Ende ein.

Phraseological units are an important part of every language and due to their distinctive characteristics, they require special attention in their lexicographic description. However, phraseology is often underrepresented in lexicography, especially in bilingual dictionaries. Even though many important theoretical propositions have been suggested by linguists in the field of phraseology and idioms, from the perspective of lexicography, research is rather limited and concentrates mainly on monolingual lexicography. In our attempt to fill this gap, we have examined the treatment of phraseology in bilingual English-Greek dictionaries. Specifically, we proceeded to a corpus-based comparative analysis of the main English-Greek dictionaries (paper and electronic editions), in order to detect the problematic aspects in the description of phraseological units in terms of dictionary macrostructure and microstructure. Our attention focused on various issues, such as phraseological coverage, translation equivalents, grammatical and syntactic information, usage labels and more. In order to extract information about the use of phraseological units and to retrieve potential translation equivalents, we built a parallel English – Greek corpus, consisted of texts collected from TED talks. While parallel corpora have been widely used in several fields of linguistics, they have not been extensively exploited as a tool in bilingual lexicography. The results of the dictionary assessment have shown that even if the general quality of the examined dictionaries is rather high, they present various problems and omissions, such as poor phraseological inclusion, insufficient grammatical/syntactic or stylistic information, inadequate translation equivalents and so on. Based on the information retrieved from our parallel corpus we compiled for our study, we have proposed solutions for their improvement, which could be applied both in this language combination and in bilingual dictionaries in general. Our attempt aims to make a lexicographical proposal on how bilingual dictionaries would improve the representation of phraseology. This model could be used in the compilation of bilingual dictionaries of general use, as well as dictionaries of phraseology.
Les unitats fraseològiques i les expressions idiomàtiques en especial constitueixen una part important de totes les llengües. Requereixen una atenció especial per part de la lexicografia ateses les seves característiques i atès que el seu significat no és composicional. Això no obstant, la representació de la fraseologia als diccionaris, i especialment al diccionaris bilingües, sovint és deficient. Malgrat el fet que s’hagin proposat diverses aproximacions lingüístiques per analitzar la fraseologia, hi ha hagut relativament poca recerca sobre la fraseologia des de la perspectiva de la lexicografia, i la que hi ha se centra principalment en els diccionaris monolingües. En aquesta tesi s’analitza el tractament de la fraseologia i, de manera especial, de les frases fetes, en diccionaris bilingües de la combinatòria lingüística anglès-grec. Es proposa analitzar els principal diccionaris bilingües d’aquesta combinatòria disponibles en format imprès i en format digital i utilitzar les dades d’un corpus paral·lel per tal de detectar els punts més problemàtics amb relació a la macrostructura i microstructura del diccionari. Es tractaran els temes següents: la selecció de fraseologia inclosa, els equivalents, la informació gramatical i sintàctica, i les etiquetes de registre, entre altres. Per tal d’obtenir informació sobre l’ús real de les unitats fraseològiques i per tal d’identificar els equivalents potencials, es crea un corpus paral·lel anglès-grec basat en un grup de textos corresponents a ponències de la fundació TED. Tot i que s’han utilitzat els corpus paral·lels en diversos estudis lingüístics, fins ara el seu ús en l’elaboració dels diccionaris bilingües ha estat relativament limitat. Els resultats de l’avaluació dels diccionaris demostren que, malgrat la bona qualitat general dels diccionaris estudiats, hi ha diversos problemes i llacunes en relació amb la fraseologia, com ara un nivell pobre d’inclusió de frases, una representació insuficient d’informació gramatical, sintàctica i estilística, i una identificació d’equivalents no satisfactoris, entre altres. Basant-nos en la informació extreta del corpus paral·lel desenvolupat per a aquesta tesi, hem proposat solucions per millorar els diccionaris d’aquesta combinatòria en especial i, més generalment, que es podrien implementar en la confecció de diccionaris bilingües. El nostre objectiu és fer una proposta factible en què els diccionaris bilingües incloguessin una informació fraseològica més acurada, que es podria adoptar tant pels diccionaris bilingües generals com pels diccionaris de fraseologia.
Las unidades fraseológicas y las expresiones idiomáticas en especial constituyen una parte importante de todas las lenguas. Requieren una atención especial por parte de la Lexicografía debido a sus características y a la falta de composicionalidad de su significado. No obstante, la representación de la fraseología en los diccionarios y especialmente en los diccionarios bilingües suele ser deficiente. A pesar de que se hayan propuesto varias aproximaciones al análisis de la fraseología desde la Lingüística, la investigación en fraseología desde la perspectiva de la Lexicografía es relativamente pobre y se centra principalmente en los diccionarios monolingües. En nuestra investigación, analizamos el tratamiento de la fraseología y, muy particularmente, de las frases hechas, en diccionarios bilingües de la combinatoria lingüística inglés-griego. Proponemos analizar los principales diccionarios bilingües de esta combinatoria y utilizar datos de un corpus paralelo para detectar los puntos más problemáticos en relación con la descripción de la fraseología y en relación con la macrostructura y la microstructura del diccionario. Se tratan los siguientes temas: la selección de fraseología incluida, los equivalentes, la información gramatical i sintáctica, i las etiquetas de registre, entre otros. Para obtener información sobre el uso real de unidades fraseológicas y para identificar equivalentes potenciales, se crea un corpus paralelo inglés-griego basado en textos correspondientes a ponencias de la fundación TED. Aunque se ha utilizado los corpus paralelos en varios estudios lingüísticos, hasta la fecha su uso en la elaboración de diccionarios bilingües ha sido relativamente limitado. Los resultados de la evaluación de los diccionarios demuestran que, a pesar de la buena calidad general de los diccionarios estudiados, hay varios problemas y carencias en relación con la fraseología, como, por ejemplo, el nivel pobre de inclusión de frases, una representación insuficiente de información gramatical, sintáctica y estilística, y una identificación de equivalentes no satisfactorios, entre otros. Basándonos en la información extraída del corpus paralelo desarrollado para esta tesis, se han propuesto soluciones para mejorar los diccionarios bilingües existentes en esta combinatoria específicamente y, más generalmente, que se podrían aplicar a la confección de diccionarios bilingües. Nuestro objetivo es desarrollar una propuesta factible en la que los diccionarios bilingües incluyeran una información fraseológica más esmerada, que se podría adoptar tanto para los diccionarios bilingües generales como para los diccionarios de fraseología.

Abstract:
This thesis uses the tools and methods of corpus linguistics to study the process of knowledge encoding in a corpus of texts from the scientific discipline of genetics. It is argued here that the approach taken fits into the tradition of corpus-driven approaches to linguistic questions in that no assumption is made about the linguistic form that this knowledge encoding will take. Instead the study proceeds by identifying a set of keywords using the concept of lexical chains to identify items of terminology. The investigation of these uses the cluster function of WordSmith Tools (Scott 2004) and is qualitative, following Sinclair (1991; 2004) in attempting to develop a picture of the typical linguistic nature of the patterns surrounding these clusters inductively through a process of studying collocation and colligation patterns and identifying phraseology. It is argued here that such an approach is required to discover linguistic aspects of epistemic encoding that have as yet not been identified by those working in the related fields of discourse analysis or corpus linguistics.
