Abstract:
The study of twenty-nine oligochaete samples collected in 1996 by J. H. Stock and J. J. Vermeulen (University of Amsterdam), in the Sultanate of Oman, allowed us to draw up an initial inventory of the freshwater oligochaete fauna of the Arabian peninsula, a fauna totally unknown until now. The 147 specimens examined belong to nine species of four families: Phreodrilidae, Naididae, Tubificidae and Enchytraeidae. The Phreodrilidae(2 species) represent more than half of the total specimens; whilst the rest belong mainly to the Naididae. Two new species of Phreodrilidae (Antarctodrilus arabicus n.

Abstract:
The discovery of a large and flourishing population of Phreodrilidae in terrestrial peatlands in northwest Ireland was surprising on two counts: these oligochaete worms are usually aquatic and most of the species occur in the Southern Hemisphere. The phreodrilids were discovered in a project that targeted Enchytraeidae, therefore methods adapted to the investigation of enchytraeids could be applied, including the study of living animals and properly fixed whole mounts. DNA sequencing was also performed. All worms identified here belong to one species, new to science, and placed in the genus As

Abstract:
A combination of computerized and classical methods suggests that the Phreodrilidae be classified as a monophyletic family with two subfamilies, Phreodrilinae subfam.nov. and Phreodriloidinae subfam.nov. The former includes the genera Phreodrilus and Antarctodrilus gen.nov. and the latter the genera Phreodriloides, Insulodrilus gen.nov., Schizodrilus, and Astacopsidrilus. The new species Astacopsidrilus jamiesoni is similar to its congeners except that the atria and vasa deferentia are short and joined together basally. The spermathecal ampullae are distinctly paired in A. jamiesoni, but there

Abstract:
In this review of Australian phreodrilid oligochaetes, several descriptions are amended, some species are reclassified and additional distribution data are provided for most species. One new genus (Nesodrilus) and 11 new species (Phreodrilus diemenensis, Phreodrilus melaleucensis, Phreodrilus mitodes, Antarctodrilus acanthaseta, Antarctodrilus micros, Antarctodrilus horwitzi, Nesodrilus southwellensis, Insulodrilus parviseta, Insulodrilus unisetoides, Insulodrilus bifidus and Astacopsidrilus myothyros) are described from Australia. Abstract:
Fourteen taxa in three families are noted from regions of South America. Monopylephorus moleti (Tubificidae) and Haplotaxis aedeochaeta (Haplotaxidae) are new to science, while Potamothrix bavaricus (Tubificidae) and Phreodrilus lacustris (Phreodrilidae) are new records for the continent. The tubificids Isochaetides lacustris, Epirodrilus antipodum, and Paranadrilus descolei are redescribed. The report for Rhyacodrilus palustris from South Georgia is shown to be erroneous and should refer to Rhyacodrilus coccineus. The list of known species from the area is reviewed and some anatomical feature
