Abstract:
Estetrol (E4) has strong antioxidative, neurogenic and angiogenic effects in neural system resulting in the attenuation of neonatal hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy. We aimed to define the role of estrogen receptors in E4-dependent actions in neuronal cell cultures and prove the promyelinating effect of E4. In vitro the antioxidative and cell survival/proliferating effects of E4 on H2O2-induced oxidative stress in primary hippocampal cell cultures were studied using different combinations of specific inhibitors for ERα (MPP dihydrochloride), ERβ (PHTTP), GPR30 (G15) and palmytoilation (2-BR). LDH activity and cell survival assays were performed. In vivo the promyelinating role of different concentrations of E4 (1 mg/kg/day, 5 mg/kg/day, 10 mg/kg/day, 50 mg/kg/day) was investigated using the hypoxic–ischemic brain damage model in the 7-day-old immature rats before/after the induction of hypoxic–ischemic insult. Myelin basic protein (MBP) immunostaining was performed on brain coronal sections. Our results show that LDH activity is significantly upregulated in cell cultures where the E4’s effect was completely blocked by concomitant treatment either with ERα and ERβ inhibitors (MPP and PHTPP, respectively), or ERα and ERβ inhibitors combined with 2-BR. Cell survival is significantly downregulated in cell cultures where the effect of E4 was blocked by ERβ inhibitor (PHTTP) alone. The blockage of GRP30 receptor did affect neither LDH activity nor cell survival. MBP immunostaining is significantly upregulated in E4-pretreated groups at a concentration of 5 mg/kg/day and 50 mg/kg/day E4, whereas the MBP-positive area OD ratio is significantly increased in all the E4-treated groups. E4’s antioxidative actions mostly depend on ERα and ERβ, whereas neurogenesis and possibly promyelinating activities might be realized through ERβ.

Abstract:
IntroductionModule 501 provides core medications which are fundamental to the capability of a prehospital treatment team (PHTT). The quantities of each medication in the module inventory undergo regular review, but these do not correspond to a population at risk (PAR) figure or deployment length for which they intend to be used. This article proposes how the quantities of Module 501 drugs can be scaled for a given deployment, in this example using statistics taken from static PHTTs on Exercise Saif Sareea 3 (SS3).MethodsThe statistics were gathered using a custom-built search of electronic records from the Deployed Defence Medical Information Capability Programme in addition to written record-keeping, which were aligned to the weekly PAR at each PHTT location throughout their full operational capability periods. A quotient was then derived for each module item using a formula.ResultsAmong the 10 most commonly prescribed drugs were four analgesics and three antimicrobials. 42 of the 110 studied drugs were not prescribed during SS3.DiscussionThe data from SS3 reflect the typical scope of disease encountered in the deployed land setting. Employing these data, the use of a formula to estimate the drug quantities needed to sustain a Strike Armoured Infantry Brigade over a 28-day period is demonstrated.RecommendationsFurther study of Module 501 across varied deployment environments would be valuable in evolving this approach to medicinal scaling if proven effective for the warm desert climate. It could then be applied to other modules to further inform future Strike medical planning.LimitationsSeveral considerations when drawing deductions from the data are mentioned, including the inaccuracy of predictor variables taken from the EpiNATO-2 reports.ConclusionThe proposed formula provides an evidence-based framework for scaling drug quantities for a deployment planning. This may improve patient safety and confer logistical, storage and fiscal benefits.

Abstract:
In this work, the fluorescence (FL) and bathochromic of the photophysical properties from protonated small molecule in cast film state have been investigated. To realize these purposes, the material of 4’,4’’’’-(1,4-phenylene bis (2,2’:6’,2”-terpyridine) (Phtpy) as a small molecule and camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) as an acid for protonation was selected. For Phtpy, its maxima absorption is 300 nm and no FL color emission. After CSA solution was added in chlorofom solution of Phtpy, the absorption spectrum of protonated Phtpy is broaden to longer wavelength with two new peaks appear at around 350 and 370 nm. Upon direct excitation at wavelength of 300 nm, the range of FL spectrum of original and protonated Phtpy is from 320 to 580 nm and from 370 to 580 with their maxima FL intensities at 360 and 460 nm. Interestingly, protonated Phtpy emits blue FL color emission. In addition, energy gap of protonated Phtpy is smaller than that of pristine Phtpy. Finally, the FL and remarkable red shift of absorption and FL spectra of protonated Phtpy will pave the way to develop sensor and other photonic devices with high performances in the ultaviolet region.

Abstract:
From the pyrazoles 3,5-di-(2′-furanyl)pyrazole (fu2pzH), 3-phenyl-5-(2′-thienyl)pyrazole (PhtpzH) and 3-(2′-furanyl)-5-(2′′-naphthyl)pyrazole (funappzH), a range of alkaline earth and lanthanoid pyrazolate complexes has been prepared by redox transmetallation/protolysis reactions between free metals, Hg(C6F5)2 and the pyrazoles, by reaction of I2‐activated metals with the pyrazoles, and in one case by a similar reaction of unactivated metal, in the donor solvents tetrahydrofuran (thf) and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (dme). Thus the divalent [Ca(Phtpz)2(thf)4], [Ba(Phtpz)2(thf)4] and [Ca(funappz)2(thf)4]·(thf) complexes, the heteroleptic [Yb(Phtpz)I(thf)4] and the trivalent [La(fu2pz)3(thf)3]·2thf complex have been prepared and structurally characterized, as well as the dme complexes [Yb(Phtpz)2(dme)2] and [Eu(Phtpz)3(dme)2]. Highlights include the first trans-[LnII(pz)I(thf)4] complex, a rare transoid [Ln(pz)2(dme)2] complex and a complex with both chelating and unidentate dme. In all cases, the Phtpz complexes exhibit pronounced positional disorder of the 2-thienyl and phenyl groups in the solid state, as do the two polymorphs of the parent pyrazole.

Hansson, Lena. ""Enligt fysiken eller enligt mig själv?" : gymnasieelever, fysiken och grundantaganden om världen." Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Institutionen för samhälls- och välfärdsstudier, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-10561.

Full text
Abstract:
Students’ presuppositions about the world are studied, together with the presuppositions the students associate with physics. It is from the starting point of our presuppositions about what the world is like that we try to interpret and understand new phenomena that we meet, for example in science class. The thesis primarily focus on presuppositions usually taken for granted in science, and presuppositions that are of interest for the relationship between science and religion. A specific content area was chosen for the students reasoning in the empirical studies: the origin and development of the universe and existential questions related to that. The thesis builds upon two studies. In the first one students’ written answers and statements during interviews have been studied, and in the second one students’ groupdiscussions were studied. Students in both studies are in their last year of upper secondary school, and all of them study the course Physics B. The results show that there are students that describe their own view and the view of physics in different ways. This is valid both for questions about the origin and development of the universe, and for questions for example about the relationship between science and religion. The results also show that presuppositions that are usually taken for granted in physics, not necessarily are easily associated with physics by the students. This can make it hard for them to understand reasoning and models in physics. In addition to this the results also show that the students associate scientistic views with physics. Scientism states that nothing more than things that are in the realm of science exists. This exclude the possiblity that other dimensions than the material one exist. Associating physics with presuppositions that are not necessary for physics (for example scientistic views) can have consequences for students not sharing those views, i.e. they will have a harder time identifing themselves with physics. Perhaps they will choose not to study physics when given a choice.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) is caused by germ line mutations in the PTEN gene. Symptoms include cancer pre- disposition, immune deviations, and lipomas/lipomatosis. No causal standard therapy is available. We describe a therapeutic attempt with the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor sirolimus for a PHTS patient suffering from thymus hyperplasia and lipomatosis. We furthermore assessed the in vitro effects of sirolimus and other inhibitors on lipoma cells of the patient. Methods: The patient underwent clinical and blood examinations and whole-body magnetic resonance imaging to assess tumor sizes. Lipoma cells of the patient were incubated with inhibitors of the phosphoinositide3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT/ mTOR signaling pathway to analyze the effects on proliferation, adipocyte differentiation, and survival in vitro. Results: Sirolimus treatment improved somatic growth and reduced thymus volume. These effects diminished over the treatment period of 19 mo. Sirolimus decreased lipoma cell proliferation and adipocyte differentiation in vitro but did not cause apoptosis. PI3K and AKT inhibitors induced apoptosis significantly. Conclusion: Sirolimus treatment led to an improvement of the patient’s clinical status and a transient reduction of the thymus. Our in vitro findings point to PI3K and AKT inhibitors as potential treatment options for patients with severe forms of PHTS.

"Potentially harmful trace elements (PHTEs) in the groundwater of Greater Giyani, Limpopo Province, South Africa: possible health implications." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/15089.

Full text
Abstract:
M.Sc. (Geology)
Most rural communities in developing countries rely on borehole water as their only source of water. Since borehole water comes from underground, it is often considered pure and clean, but this is frequently not the case. Groundwater contains certain amounts of trace elements that may become deleterious to human health. The objectives of this investigation were to assess the concentration levels of Potential Harmful Trace Elements (PHTEs) and their spatial distribution patterns in borehole water in the Greater Giyani area of Limpopo, South Africa, and the potential human health risks associated with this. The method of research comprised two phases: (I) In the first phase, I assessed the occurrence and distribution patterns of PHTEs in the boreholes of the Giyani area. A total of 29 water samples were collected from boreholes (including 15 community boreholes and 14 primary school boreholes) in the Greater Giyani area during the dry season (July/August 2012), and for comparison another 27 samples (including 15 community boreholes and 12 schools boreholes) from the same localities during the wet season (March 2013). The samples were analysed for the trace elements arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), selenium (Se) and lead (Pb) using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass-Spectrometry (ICPMS) technique. In order to assess the groundwater quality, PHTEs concentrations were compared with the South African National Standard of Drinking water (SANS 241-1:2011). (II) In the second phase, I evaluated the geographic variation between PHTEs and associated human health effects. This involved acquisition of data on a total of 100 cancer cases recorded during the period 2011-2014 at Nkhensani Hospital. ArcGIS Spatial analyst tool was used to create thematic maps illustrating spatial distribution of clinical data and arsenic concentrations in boreholes.

Abstract:
Individuals carrying germline mutations in the tumor suppressor gene phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) may present with diverse clinical phenotypes, grouped under the term of PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS). This chapter will focus on two PHTS conditions: Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome and Cowden syndrome. The first condition is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by macrocephaly, intestinal hamartomatous polyposis, vascular malformations, lipomas, hemangiomas, and genital freckling. Other features include developmental delay, hypotonia, and scoliosis. Cowden syndrome is also an autosomal dominant disorder, mainly characterized by multiple hamartomas and high risk of breast, thyroid, and other cancers. PTEN encodes the main inhibitor of the PI3K-AKT pathway, regulating cell growth and proliferation, and protein synthesis. Therefore, germline loss-of-function mutations in this gene lead to excessive growth, particularly affecting connective tissues. Detection of PTEN mutations is critical for clinical management and treatment strategies.

Abstract:
An experimental facility is being set up at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre for studying the thermal-hydraulic behavior of Indian Pressurized Heavy water Reactors under normal and accidental conditions. The set up simulates the containment of the reactor and the Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS). In experimental set up, the PHTS simulation vessel is placed outside the containment building and the piping system connects it to the containment building. The steam-water mixture produced in the PHTS vessel will be discharged into the containment to simulate various postulated accidental conditions. The piping system consists of quick opening dual assembly rupture disk and valves. Various layouts of the piping system had been studied with due considerations to the site constraints. Rupture disk location has been finalized considering its operational requirements. Supporting arrangement has been arrived at with due consideration to the various service load requirements. Subsequently, additional supports have been incorporated to increase system frequency. This paper deals with the various considerations made and strategy adopted for finalisation of layout and to meet the codal requirements.

Abstract:
MONJU is a prototype fast breeder reactor (FBR). Modification work commenced in March 2005. Since June 2004, MONJU has changed to one-loop operation of the primary heat transport system (PHTS) with all of the secondary heat transport systems (SHTS) drained of sodium. The purposes of this change are to shorten the modification period and to reduce the cost incurred for circuit trace heating electrical consumption. Before changing condition, the following issues were investigated to show that this mode of operation was possible. The heat loss from the reactor vessel and the single primary loop must exceed the decay heat by an acceptable margin but the capacity of preheaters to keep the sodium within the primary vessel at about 200°C must be maintained. With regard to the heat loss and the decay heat, the estimated heat loss in the primary system was in the range of 90–170kW in one-loop operation, and the calculated decay heat was 21.2kW. Although the heat input of the primary pump was considered, it was clear that circuit heat loss greatly exceeded the decay heat. As for preheaters, effective capacity was less than the heat loss. Therefore, the temperature of the reactor vessel room was raised to reduce the heat loss. One-loop operation of the PHTS was able to be executed by means of these measures. The cost of electrical consumption in the power plant has been reduced by one-loop operation of the PHTS and the modification period was shortened.

Abstract:
Following a core uncovery, the core will heat up and the fuel pin cladding will oxidize in the presence of steam. The reaction follows a parabolic rate law, and a significant cladding oxidation does not occur until the cladding temperature reaches approximately 1800° F. One of the products of the cladding oxidation reaction is hydrogen, which can accumulate in the PHTS if the PHTS is intact or in the reactor building if a pathway exists from the PHTS. If the hydrogen concentration reaches 4 to 6% in the reactor building (which is very possible following a significant core damage), the hydrogen can ignite and cause a spike in the reactor building pressure and temperature. If enough hydrogen is allowed to build up in the reactor building, the ignition of the hydrogen can lead to a pressure spike that exceeds the reactor building ultimate design pressure, thereby jeopardizing the reactor buildings integrity. Even if reactor building integrity is not jeopardized by a global hydrogen burn, the fact that a global hydrogen burn could occur will prevent the TSC from exiting the SAMG. Hydrogen generation and flammability is a concern throughout most of the guidelines in the Wolsong 2 (CANDU 6 type reactor) SAMG. The purpose of this paper is to define whether the hydrogen in the reactor building atmosphere is flammable, and to estimate the hydrogen concentration in the reactor building atmosphere based on an estimated oxidation percentage. For the Wolsong 2 this CA, four sets of hydrogen figures were developed for the case of no venting (no core/concrete interaction), a 15% venting (no core/concrete interaction), a 30% venting (no core/concrete interaction), and no venting (core/concrete interaction for 24 hours resulting in a 114°F superheat and a addition of non-condensable gases).

Abstract:
Flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) is a serious form of degradation in primary heat transport piping system (PHTS) of the nuclear reactor. Pipes transporting hot coolant from the reactor to steam generators are particularly vulnerable to FAC degradation, such as tight radius pipe bends with high flow velocity. FAC is a life limiting factor, as excessive degradation can result in the loss of structural integrity of the pipe. To prevent this, engineering codes and regulations have specified minimum wall thickness requirements to ensure fitness for service of the piping system. Nuclear utilities have implemented periodic wall thickness inspection programs and carried out replacement of pipes prior to reaching an unsafe state. To optimize the life cycle management of PHTS, accurate prediction of time of replacement or “end of life” of pipe sections is important. Since FAC is a time-dependent process of uncertain nature, the paper presents two probabilistic models for predicting the end of life. The paper illustrates that the modeling assumptions have a significant impact on the predicted number of replacements in the piping system. A practical case study is presented using wall thickness inspection data collected from Canadian nuclear plants.

Abstract:
The loss-of-reactor-level (LORL) is a typical accident condition causing a severe accident (SA) in sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). In the loop-type SFR Monju, important cause of the LORL is the second coolant leakage at the low elevation of the primary heat transport system (PHTS), which occurs in cold standby in a different loop from that of the first coolant leakage in rated power operation because of excessive declining of the sodium level. This study developed an evaluation method for the LORL with considering countermeasures to prevent LORL: i.e., pumping sodium up into reactor vessel (RV) and interruption of sodium flowing out by siphon effect. To evaluate the effectiveness of the countermeasures, the transient behavior in the RV sodium level was analytically studied in representative accident sequences. The representative sequences with lowest sodium level were selected by considering combinations of possible coolant leakage positions. The evaluation result clarified that the LORL can be prevented by conducting the above-mentioned countermeasures to maintain the RV sodium level sufficient for the operation of decay heat removal system, even after the second coolant leakage of PHTS.

Abstract:
Abstract Among the various parts in a pressurized heavy-water reactor (PHWR), pressure tubes are of tremendous importance. This is because they withstand extreme both pressure and temperature differences that exist between the Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS) and the moderator. The pressure tubes also contribute to prevention of fission product release from the PHTS to the PHWR plant (together with end fittings and nearby parts including plugs). When a PHWR is given a 1% derating, half is due to the aging of the pressure tubes. The main concern with pressure tubes is decrease of the safety margin. Most of the reduction comes from the effects caused by radial expansion and axial sagging, which are belong to four major phenomena including the thinning and the elongation. More specifically, the fuel-pin temperature distribution changes for the worse if deformation of the pressure tube occurs. Because there is extreme irradiation inside the core, the tube content is exposed to high temperature and high pressure. Thus, the shape of the pressure tube is deformed as times goes on. In this paper, using modeling of a deformed pressure tube in three-dimensional space, the effects on the fuel, coolant temperature, and coolant density, were studied quantitatively. This included a neutronics effect explored using coupled neutronics and thermal hydraulics (T/H) calculations. Among the results, only marginal changes of the neutronics effects were observed. The T/H results, which included temperature and density of the fuel and the coolant, were not critical. Through this study, we are now able to determine in new ways, conventional derating values from a pressure tube.

Abstract:
Flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) is the main reason for Feeder pipe wall thinning in CANDU pressured heavy water reactor (PHWR). Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) made design modification for Third Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant (TQNPP) to mitigate Feeder pipe FAC rate by increasing Cr content to more than 0.2 wt % and control primary heat transport system (PHTS) pH value between 10.2–10.4, more than 4 years laboratory verification test proved the modification was effective. More than 10 years in-service inspection performed by TQNPP proved that real Feeder pipes FAC rate is less than designed value; TQNPP Feeder pipe can meet the design life and even extend the service life.

Abstract:
In the process of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) design, it is very important to verify thermo-hydraulic performance of each component in the sodium environment. In KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) STELLA (Sodium Integral Effect Test Loop for Safety Simulation and Assessment) project is under a Mid- and Long-term Nuclear R&D Program. The STELLA project is composed of two stages. In the 1st stage the performance for heat exchangers such as DHX (Decay heat exchanger) and AHX (Air heat exchanger) and for PHTS (Primary heat transport system) mechanical pump will be evaluated. The detailed design of each component is based on that of a 600MWe demonstration reactor. Since full-scale components could not be installed in STELLA-1 [1], the model pump is designed to be scaled-down based on the scaling law. Various pump tests have been done in water environment by using model pump. In this study the design features of model pump were described and the scaling parameters were examined. The results of pump performance tests have been also introduced which is essential to perform safety analysis.
