Abstract:

Wolfe, John R. "Aretē and Physics: The Lesson of Plato's Timaeus." Scholar Commons, 2010. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1811.

Full text
Abstract:
Plato's Timaeus is traditionally read as a work dedicated to the sole purpose of describing the origin and nature of the cosmos, as a straightforward attempt by Plato to produce a peri phuseos treatise. In accord with this reading, the body of Timaeus' monologue is then seen as nothing more than an attempt by Plato to convey his own cosmological doctrines. I propose an alternative to the view that the Timaeus is nothing more than a textbook of Platonic physics. The Timaeus is rather squarely focused on the human being, in her moral and political dimensions, and on her relation to the natural world as a whole. Ultimately, this account of the human being is intended to provide part of the answer to the question of how society can produce good citizens and leaders, and thus serves to provide a theoretical basis for the practices of paideia. When viewed in this light many of the curious features of the Timaeus appear less strange. The various parts of the dialogue: the dramatic introduction, Critias' tale of the Ancient Athenians, and Timaeus' monologue can be seen as each contributing to an investigation of a single topic. It further allows us to understand why Plato chooses to employ Timaeus the Locrian as the principle speaker of the dialogue rather than Socrates. Finally, when read in this way, the Timaeus no longer appears as an outlier in the Platonic corpus, as a work devoted to a radically different subject matter than the rest of his writings. It can be seen as dedicated to the same issues which preoccupied Plato throughout his entire life, as about the determination of the best life and providing the tools with which to realize it.

Abstract:
This study concentrates on the disease and treatment cases of women in the Hippocratic texts, to identify and describe the Hippocratic medical style as one that, through its mode of practice, represents a significant departure in making the human body observable. As an antidote to a bias in the literature that has always made the male more visible, we chose to view Hippocrates&rsquo
s novel way of making the woman visible since, producing a new entity for observation, this style of practice led to the emergence of a new profession of medicine, gynecology. In this way, the &ldquo
white-armed&rdquo
women of ancient times were brought into the realm of the visible. Examination of the case histories in the corpus revealed that the observational style was used in light of two principles, that of nature as an active force, generally for healing, and water as a function and humor
both the nature and water concepts uniting the analytical and the metaphorical in a holistic way. The nature inspiration enables an ecological view of Hippocratic practice in such a way that later categories described by Kuhn as incommensurable are seen to function in interrelation. The theoretical trajectory therefore, involves a short survey which starts with Popper and follows through Kuhn, Lakatos, Feyerabend, and finally Crombie, with the latter&rsquo
s concept of &ldquo
styles of thinking&rdquo
which accounts for how habits of thought inform specific practices like Hippocratic gynecology.

Flores-Junior, Olimar. "Le cynisme ancien : vie kata phusin ou vie kat'euteleian?" Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040053.

Full text
Abstract:
Cynicism is a philosophical movement which started in Greece in the 4th century B.C. around the figure of Diogenes of Sinope. Modern interpreters often understand this movement as the expression of a radical naturalism, a doctrine founded on a drastic refusal of all the values of civilized life and consequently defined as a “crusade against civilization” or as an “anti-promethean current”, identifying in the “civilizing fire” the very origin of all the troubles, vices and misfortunes that men have to cope with. Accordingly, Cynic ethics would advocate a “return to nature” or to a life “according to nature” (kata phusin), guided by the idea of animality and of primitivism, that is to say a life modeled on animal behavior or on the modus vivendi of the primitive men. The present thesis aims at questionning this widely spread interpretation of cynicism on the basis of an analysis of the texts transmitted by Antiquity. The alternative interpretation that we offer rests on the reading of two major texts: the Sixth Discourse by Dio Chrysostomus and the dialogue The Cynic transmitted under the authority of Lucian of Samosate, along with some other sources, like the sixth book of Lives and opinions of eminent philosophers written by Diogenes Laertius and the Letters attributed to Diogenes of Sinope and to Crates of Thebes. It redefines Cynic philosophy as the quest for a life “according to easiness” (kat’ euteleian) and — in modern terminology — as a radical form of pragmatism, within which dualisms – notably the one between nomos and phusis – tend to be abolished in the name of a morality conditioned by the actual circumstances of individual life

Abstract:
Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is a worldwide tick-borne disease that originally belongs to the Bunyaviridae family, the genus Nairovirus. In addition to infection from ticks, humans become infected if any contact with infected blood or tissue material occurs. To study the disease, several methods such as real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Immunofluorescence assay are used for detection of the virus. All viruses in Bunyaviridae consists of three single stranded RNA sequences, the small, the medium and the large segment, that encode for the nucleocapsid protein, the glycoproteins, GN and GC, and the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, respectively. The main purpose of this study was to express the M RNA segment´s glycoproteins, GN and GC. By using the reverse transcription reaction, the cDNA was synthesized from vRNA and the M RNA sequence was amplified using Phusion DNA-polymerase. In the storage vector, pcDNA3.1/V5-His-TOPO, the insert was ligatured followed by transformation into Escherichia coli. Restriction digestion was made with specific enzymes that cut out the insert. In the second ligation and transformation two different expression vectors (pTM1/pI.18) was used. After observation of the gel analysis from the test-PCR, an insert in the expression vector was shown.

Abstract:
This study aims to describe irreversible systems (those that do not obey detailed balance) using a statistical mechanics formalism based on stochastic dynamics. Our main objectives are: (i) to investigate the critical behavior and the possible universality classes in irreversible systems; (ii) and modeling the dynamics of epidemic spreading. First we investigate the stochastic and spatially structured susceptible-infected-recovered model (SIR). In this model, individuals are divided into three classes: susceptible (S), infected (I) and recovered (R). A susceptible individual may become infected due to contact with an infected neighbor, and an infected individual may recover spontaneously. This model exhibits a phase transition between a phase in which the epidemic spreads and a phase where there is no spreading of the disease. Treating each susceptible-infected pair as a connection through which there may be epidemic spreading, we show that it is possible to establish a connection between the SIR model and the percolation model. Thus we are able to use methods of the theory of standard percolation for determining the epidemic spreading. By means of dynamic mean-field approximations and stationary and time-dependent computational Monte Carlo simulations, we determine the critical point and critical behavior of this model. In addition, we propose two models to describe the vector transmitted epidemic process. We consider two interacting populations, one formed by vectors and other by hosts. The vectors may be susceptible (S) or infected (I), where the states allowed for the hosts are the same as those in the SIR model. Transmission of the disease occurs due to contact between a local host (vector) and a susceptible vector (host) infected. We determine the threshold of infection, the size of the epidemic, and show that both models exhibit second order phase transitions that belong to the universality class of dynamic isotropic percolation.

Sekwati, Phuti Justice. "Evaluating Gauteng pharmacists' attitudes towards generic medicines / Phuti Justice Sekwati." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/15544.

Abstract:
Generic medicines are very important in driving down the health care cost. In a country like South Africa, where more than 80% of the population depend on the state health care, it is important to find ways to reduce cost. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the attitude towards generic medicines by pharmacists in Gauteng province of South Africa. Gauteng as the economic hub of the country, with the highest population and the highest number of pharmacies and pharmacists, obtaining a picture around the attitude towards generic medicines would help the all the stakeholders in the health care sector to identify areas of concern and address them to drive a positive attitude. In order to evaluate the attitude, Fishbein models, which noted the intention to perform the behaviour in question as the immediate antecedent of any behaviour, were used. The models identified two conceptually independent determinants of intention, which are attitude towards the behaviour (personal) and subjective norm (social). Depending of which model one is using, one more determinant of the intention “perceived behavioural control” can be added on the theory of reasoned action to form model of planned behaviour. By evaluating the attitude one can therefore determine the level of intention to perform the behaviour of interest which is generic substitution in this study. An empirical study was conducted among 116 pharmacists and assistants in Gauteng province. The methodology included research design, instrument development, sampling methods, data collection, capturing and statistical analysis. The results were analysed using Cronbach Alpha coefficients to measure reliability of the research instrument, t-test and ANOVA to test the hypothesis and the variance between groups; the effect sizes and Spearman's rho to determine the correlation and relationship between two variables of interest. The results of the study showed that, 94% of the respondents believe that generics are viable alternatives to innovator medicines. On the question of pharmacists’ attitude towards generic medicines results showed that there was no significant difference in almost all the demographic characteristics gender, age, qualifications, employment level, years of experience and type of pharmacy one practices. The only significant driver of the difference in attitude is the location of the pharmacy where pharmacists practicing in the townships and the city centre were found to be more receptive to generics than those in the suburbs. Due to reliability failure on the control belief construct, the theory of planned behaviour was downgraded to theory of reasoned action, to exclude the control belief construct for further statistical analysis. Correlation between the two attitudes constructs, behavioural belief and evaluation of behavioural outcome was one of the highest, where behavioural belief was identified as the direct measure of attitude and also the main driver. The study concluded that attitude is one of the most important personal factors influencing both the organisation and individual consumer buying behaviour. Evaluating individuals’ attitude to the behaviour (use of a product or service) would help marketers to communicate the right message to the right customers.

Aristotle said: "All come from One and return to One." The "One" in the sentence means (Gk.) Arche. In Kinesi-Archi-ology, it means (Gk.) Energeia specifically. It is the first time that this research organizes the origins and the meaning of the headwords ,like the ancient Greek vocabulary (Gk.) Energeia and (Gk.) Methodos. Furthermore, the research is based on not only Martin Heidegger's theory-the Phenomenon Hermeneutics, especially the three processes "Ge-fragtes", "Be-fragtes", and "Er-fragtes", but also the circle construction of Hermeneutics. A new though and investigate method for the definition, assessment framework and education of civic literacy have been presented in science education. This new approach is based on Heidegger’s philosophy of (Ger.) Dasein, which suggests that every person (Da-sein) has a nature to connect and communicate with his surroundings actively, and through these connections and communications, the person and his surroundings possess each other (i.e. around-about-him). Proceed forwards in this way, World and man will have each other eventually (i.e. world-hood). To explain precisely, when human beings are among the Gk. Energeia which is formed by ourselves, all staffs and all things. Therefore the beginning and the goal of civic education should be started and aimed at this creative nature of civics, and with the help of hermeneutic circles to intensify this nature. The etymological investigation of (Gk.) alphabet and (Gk.) Methodos show some important features of literacy and method, e.g. (1) literacy is the (Gk.) Arche of all the disciplines. This might suggest that the education of all disciplines shall be integrated for civic literacy. (2) method is the way of integration and creation.

Due to the limited water resource and heavy economic activities, the water resource problem is getting more serious nowadays in Taiwan. A fight for water between industry and agriculture occurred in northern Taiwan during this drought in March. To prevent this problem from deteriorating, investigation of water conservation and reuse become an important and urgent issue. In this investigoted, industrial water reduction and wastewater reuse were studied. The Yieh Phui Enterprise Co., Ltd., a galvalume/galfan and pre-painted steel coils production company, was used as a case study to investigate the reduction of water use and reclamation of wastewater. The Yieh Phui Company consumes 1300 m3 of water and discharges 450 m3 of wastewater daily. According to the analysis from the water production and water consuming points, it is estimated that there will have 310 m3 of water after tertiary treatment available for cooling tower make-up. With the water quality of conductivity (4830μs/cm) and SO4-2 concentration (1845 mg/L) were under qualified, the effluent was treated with ion exchange resin and membrane separation before reuse. Results indicated that water quality promoted from treatment of the weakly basic anion exchange resin was very limited. On the other hand, treatment with strongly basic anion exchange resin was satisfactory. Removal efficiency of the SO4-2 can be as high as 99﹪by Reverse Osmosis (RO). Considering the cost effectiveness and the operation, RO is the most practicable technology. But, from the MSDI (Modified Silt Density Index) test, it was found that a significant amount of suspended and dissolved solids in the rang of 0.45μm~1.0μm were present. Therefore, application of the RO process should consider a pretreatment process in order to avoid the fouling problem of the membrane. Another approach to improve the wastewater treatment efficiency was the application of the bioagent. Bioagent was used to meet the effluent COD standard while at the same time have a reduction in the dosage of the sulfuric acid. A reduction in the application of sulfuric acid can promote the benefit of water reuse. When the water price gets higher or the government begins to levy the water pollution cost and/or the water right cost, it is estimated that an investment of NT$ 3 millions will take 1.77 years to recover. Today, under extreme stress from the water resource shortage, some viewpoints are worth to be considered by our enterprise as a sustainable business management. First, in the administration, the mass balance of water use in the plant should be established, and the management of water use should be optimized. Through the recycling of the backwash water from cooling tower, steam water, washwater, blowdown water, and so on, the water reuse ratio can be promoted from 13.2% to 42%. Second, in the aspect of water resource policy-making, possible side effects from the application of water conservation and wastewater reuse, such as the accumulation of non-biodegradable COD residual in the effluent, will make the effluent more difficult to meet the discharge requirement of EPA. This would discourage the water reuse practice. An alternative monitoring system proposed is the “pollution per unit product”. This is a practice based on the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), and should have more incentive to reduce the pollution loading and should be more applicable.

The main purpose of the company implement improve activity is to promote the work efficiency and cost effectiveness of manufacturing. This will strengthen the company and help it to maintain it’s competitive edge. The goal of the improve management activity, is to ensure the constant internal improvement of the company. By method of case study, this research explores the key success factors of the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). The TPM activity is based on a system of Preventive Maintenance (PM) from the U.S. It was introduced to Japan between 1950 and 1960. Here it was developed into the TPM activity. Taiwan started using the TPM in 1994. Since then it has made a huge contribution to the improvement and success of many companies. At the time YIEH PHUI also decided to implement the TPM activity. In 1998 after visiting some of the companies where the activities was successfully implemented YIEH PHUI also started using the TPM activity. After one year the OEE (Over All Equipment Effectiveness) of eight productive lines was increased by 10%. The company which was already experiencing a great OEE, was surprised by the great improvement caused by the TPM activity. By 2003 the company had 11 production lines and the OEE had increased by a staggering 30%. This left the company with a 97% OEE. Compare this to the 67% OEE of 1998 and the success of the TPM activity becomes clear. What was the key factor responsible for this improvement? This is what will be explored in the rest of the paper. Now there are a variety of improve management activities in Taiwan. Some companies implement these activities with great success, while other companies are not successful. Why? What is the problem? In my case study, it was found that to be successful you not only need support from top management, but also from the head of each department. The other key factor is that each employee must feel that they also benefit from this activity. This will improve their performance. This improved performance will reflect in their monthly bonus. This will motivate the employee which in turn will lead to better progress. The design of the activity should be kept as simple as possible. The most complicated decision you’d have to make in the process of implementing the activity is whether you want it or not. The research results might be a helpful reference to companies considering the implementation of the TPM activity.

Abstract:
Plant oriented movements, or tropisms allow the plant to actively respond to environmental stimuli to get more light, better access to nutrients and to grow roots deeper into the soil. Gravitropism drives the growth of roots along the gravity vector. Perception of gravity is triggered by the sedimentation of statoliths in columella root cap, but the exact signalling pathway behind this process is not known. Perception of gravity results in an unequal redistribution of the phytohormone auxin in the outer cell layers which leads to different rate of growth on the root's upper and lower side and bending of the root. The changes in auxin redistribution are accompanied by changes in apoplastic pH. Knowing an exact pattern of these pH changes could shed light on the mechanisms laying behind the gravitropic response pathway. While microelectrodes can be used to measure pH precisely, they are not suitable for the long-term imaging of growing roots. In the past few years, several pH sensitive dyes and genetically encoded sensors emerged. These can be used for long-term live in vivo imaging of pH changes in growing roots. In this thesis, I analysed the performance of several published pH sensitive genetically encoded sensors and available dyes in the roots of Arabidopsis thaliana. I observed that dyes varied...

Abstract:
Formins are proteins facilitating formation of actin filaments. They affect structure of cytoskeleton and participate in cytokinesis and tip growth. There are 2 classes of formins in Arabidopsis thaliana, which include FH1 and FH2 (Formin Homology 1 and 2) domain. Formins of the class I have usually a transmembrane domain on N-terminus. Due to this fact they can interact with membranes. Some formins from the class II include PTEN domain (Phosphatase and Tensin Homolog) derived from sequences of PTEN proteins which has lost the function of phosphatase. It is assumed this domain can bind on a membrane via the phosphatase section or C2 domain. This thesis was focused on the formin AtFH13 from the class II in Arabidopsis thaliana and on its PTEN domain. There were analyzed differences between mutants and wild-types in length of roots in seedlings and in size of seeds and seed coats, and observed the effect of dexamethasone on the length of roots on AtFH13. PTEN domain of the formin was isolated from cDNA, cloned to a vector and fused with YFP. The tagged protein was visualized by the method of transient expression in epidermal cells in the leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana. No big differences were observed between plants mutant in the gene AtFH13 and wild-type in choice parameters. Dexamethasone did't influence...
