Floods are the most common natural hazard in the Mediterranean region and they result in the greatest economic losses. For regions such as eastern Spain, the south of France, Italy, and the west of the Balkan Peninsula, it can be argued that damaging floods are not infrequent and they can be considered a key component of the climatic and hydrological regime (Barnolas and Llasat 2007).
