Chemically cross-linkable gelatin methacryloyl (GM) derivatives are getting increasing attention regarding biomedical applications. Thus, thorough investigations are needed to achieve full understanding and control of the physico-chemical behavior of these promising biomaterials. We previously introduced gelatin methacryloyl acetyl (GMA) derivatives, which can be used to control physical network formation (solution viscosity, sol-gel transition) independently from chemical cross-linking by variation of the methacryloyl-to-acetyl ratio. It is known that temperature dependent physical network fo

Swelling equilibrium and kinetics of two commercial superabsorbent gel particles---sodium polyacrylate spheres and polyacrylamide-co-potassium acrylate grains---were studied in water and in sand at room temperature. Equilibrium experiments involved swelling gel particles at different depths in saturated sand columns packed with different sand sizes. Kinetic experiments were performed in a two-dimensional cell; both gel particle size and sand particle size were varied. Water flow in gel-conditioned sand was also investigated in columns and the two-dimensional cells for different gel dosages.<br

In the current study, behavioral responses of several species of calanoid copepods to mimics of oceanographic structure were observed and evaluated in the context of foraging and aggregation. Zooplankton distributions in oceanic habitats are often attributed to physical forcing; however, physical factors only act to drive ecological patterns at large scales (m to km). At fine to intermediate scales (cm to m) zooplankton behavior is believed to govern observed distributions, but the mechanisms and ecological significance of these behaviors are not well understood.
