The historical interest in the use of physical evaluation skills in clinical settings gained new notoriety at the end of the 20th century with evidence that patients in intensive care units experienced increased morbidity and mortality related to poor nutritional status before and/or during their admission. This awareness of the adverse effects of malnutrition led to the need for screening and evaluation tools to identify nutritional risk. no clinical finding of EFN should be considered a diagnosis per se. Abstract:
The physical examination is the foundation of the diagnostic workup in cattle. The physical exam begins with a distance exam where the animal is observed prior to restraint where parameters such as mental status, abdominal contour and lameness are best evaluated. With completion of the distance exam, the hands-on examination begins. It has been said that you miss more by not looking than by not knowing. For this reason, a systematic physical examination in which the examining veterinarian follows a standard pattern for every animal examined is to be followed.

Abstract:
Physical disease is more prevalent in people with mental disorder than in the general population. It is important for psychiatrists to maintain skills in physical examination to ensure that physical illness is diagnosed and treated appropriately. A sound knowledge of medical illness ensures that examination is targeted at the relevant diseases. Mental health units should provide adequate facilities and equipment. All detailed examinations should be undertaken in the presence of a chaperone. Opportunities for psychiatrists to refresh their knowledge and skill are suggested.
