Abstract:
Exposure to community violence has a detrimental effect on the academic, social-emotional, and physical functioning of children, adolescents, and their families. Schools and educators are instrumental in enabling children and adults to process violence and trauma in order to develop a healthy worldview. Schools can counter the effects of community violence by emphasizing the development of sincere relationships between staff, students, and families; offering a warm, welcoming atmosphere; and providing a safe school environment conducive to learning. Educators can embed writing prompts and other opportunities for self-reflection within the academic curriculum as well as teach stress management, coping mechanisms, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques which can be used when a demanding situation arises. Educators and administrators are uniquely positioned to offer supports and opportunities within the school context to substantially improve the outcome for students, families, and communities experiencing community violence.

Abstract:
Political violence and armed conflict are a worldwide problem that exposes families to extreme acts of violence, disrupts community and family economic conditions, compromises family functioning and parenting behaviors, and has deleterious effects on children’s development. In this chapter, we describe two overarching, complementary theoretical frameworks that can explain how exposure to political violence affects family functioning: Bronfenbrenner’s model of hierarchically nested ecological ecosystems and a related model within developmental psychology, the family stress model. Using data from our Palestinian-Israeli exposure to violence study, a prospective study of 1,501 Palestinian and Israeli families, we examine a mediational model showing that the family’s exposure to ethnic-political violence predicts negative family functioning (parental depressive symptoms and marital aggression), which in turn predicts subsequent harsh physical punishment toward one’s children.

Abstract:
Lebanon currently hosts approximately 1.5 million refugees from neighboring Syria. Within this context, Syrian families face high rates of poverty, burdensome governmental policies and regulations, a lack of affordable housing, food insecurity, family violence, and survival practices. Exacerbated by displacement, these vulnerabilities have a destabilizing effect on parents, who are struggling to meet their individual and families’ needs in a low-resource and inhospitable environment. This chapter explores how parents experience daily economic challenges that can significantly affect their ability to adequately care for their children. Data from Syrian refugee families revealed that parents’ feelings of parental adequacy were tied to their ability to provide for their children. Parents’ feelings of inadequacy contributed to an ongoing cycle of poverty for families. Increased stress on family members manifested in negative mental and physical health consequences or family members not being able to work, thereby pushing families further into economic precarity.

Abstract:
Stalking in its broad sense and different forms within the spectrum of sexual violence has been an omnipresent characteristic of interpersonal relationships ranging from persistent and/or unwanted courtship and attention, harassment, obsessive following to threats, physical violence and murder. Yet it has only recently been criminalised in the UK after a series of high-profile cases and continuous calls and campaigns by families of victims and charities for more effective punishment of perpetrators. And while the criminalisation of stalking has brought about some positive changes including the acknowledgement of the harms suffered by victims of this type of abuse, it is crucial to bear in mind that this behaviour has been out there for a very long time in the form of the ‘everyday intrusions’ (as Betsy Stanko succinctly describes) that (mostly) women have had to endure and accommodate in their lives and as such tackling it requires a deeper investigation of its causes and a multifaceted approach. This chapter will look at current strategies and proposed measures for preventing and managing stalking (e.g. multi-agency interventions) and problematize them in light of empirical work and recent international movements. As Walklate in her chapter about sexual violence stresses it is often the case that preventive strategies aim to help and protect victims by addressing different factors and assessing risks but fail to take into account and question the socio-cultural context that enables and fosters these behaviours in the first place. Implications for future practice will be considered and discussed.

This introductory chapter provides a background for the establishment of the Troubled Families Programme (TFP), a single central government programme that aims to ‘turn around’ the lives of trouble families. The government used existing research carried out on families experiencing multiple structural disadvantages such as poverty, material deprivation, low skills, and poor-quality housing to prove that the troubled families were characterised by crime, antisocial behaviour, truancy, and worklessness. The chapter shows that troubled families were also associated with a much wider range of problems including drug and alcohol addiction, domestic violence, child abuse and poor physical and mental health, gang membership, radical extremism, and organised crime.

Abstract:
We received neurochemical rewards of pleasure when we give or receive empathic love, and seem to have a predisposition against violence. This chapter explores the crucial question of what conditions support rather than inhibit the actualization of these human predispositions. It examines experimental evidence showing that, given a choice, people tend to choose mutual benefit over winning; looks at how socialization for traditional “hypermasculinity” promotes male aggression and the suppression of loving “soft” or “feminine” feelings; and gives examples of cultures with different socialization styles, and hence far less stress and violence. It shows how the socialization of men to equate “real masculinity” with domination and violence deprives both men and women of healthy loving relations based on mutuality and the sharing of pleasure, and is key to imposing and maintaining domination systems, with their chronic fear and violence. It looks at the modern movement away from traditions of domination and its liberating effects, for example, legislation pioneered in Nordic nations that prohibits physical discipline against children in families.

Abstract:
Product development is characterized by continuous updating of existing solutions in order to cope with new market requirements. Families of product variants are used to satisfy the needs of new potential customers and penetrate new market niches. New requirements impact on the structure of a product to be changed and also on the other instances of the family which share common parts. Several change management approaches have been proposed in the literature but they are limited to analysis of a single product instance. This paper proposes a dependency-based change propagation approach which is

Abstract In an effort to produce more variety for today’s highly competitive market, companies are designing and developing families of products — groups of related products derived from common product platforms — to simultaneously satisfy multiple customer requirements. After reviewing the state of the art in product family and product platform design, we describe the Product Platform Concept Exploration Method (PPCEM) for designing common product platforms that can be scaled or “stretched” into a suitable family of products. Abstract There is a considerable amount of young adults who become amputees due to war and violence. For this population, a successful adaptation to their prosthesis depends on the socket fit, which in turn is caused by the volume change of the residual limb during the day. The literature reports several investigations on this topic, most of which use subjects walking on a treadmill to simulate their daily activity. However, this studies are focused on transtibial amputees and do not mention the relationship between this physical activity and other variables such as comfort, volume changes and

Applications of deployable mechanisms can be found in aeronautic and civil engineering, often in the creation of unfolding large-scale structures with curved surfaces. This paper proposes novel mechanical networks, which are used to approximate three-dimensional surfaces, such as cuboids, ellipsoids, or hyperboloids. Each such deployable structure is assembled from unit Sarrus and scissor linkages of different sizes, has several decoupled degrees of freedom, and can take any shape within a different family of parameterized surfaces. Each degree of freedom controls a separate parameter in the e

Abstract The spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 in a typical oil and gas facility setting, the health of employees, their families and their communities, is of real concern to the industry. In this work, a suitable predictive, agent-based model is used to predict the spread of COVID-19 in different settings as well as to evaluate strategies to block the spread. The agent-based modelling work is based on the simulation platform, Complex Organization and Bifurcation Within Environmental Bounds, or COBWEB. Children’s rights and needs are at the center of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, where education is viewed as crucial for providing the opportunities for sustainable, peaceful and equitable coexistence in a changing world. Alternative care settings are educational contexts (Tibollo, 2015) that deal with children in vulnerable conditions (UN General Assembly, 2010). For this reason, they can be considered as a sort of “field test” or “magnifying glass” on how the progress in striving to the implementation of the goals is proceeding – no one must be left behind. We capture the out-of-plane mechanical response of woven fabrics through a nonlinear anisotropic shell implementation of a continuum constitutive model. For the membrane response, we rely on a previously developed model for the in-plane behavior of woven fabrics. This planar model captured both the macroscopic response and the interactions of the yarns at the structural level, but was limited to two dimensions. The two-dimensional model is here extended to capture three-dimensional modes of deformations through a shell formulation. We assume that the effects of out-of-plane bending and shear o

In this two part paper the phenomenon of part span rotating stall is studied. The objective is to improve understanding of the physics by which stable and persistent rotating stall occurs within high speed axial flow compressors. This phenomenon is studied both experimentally (part 1) and numerically (part 2). The experimental observations reported in Part 1 are now explored through the use of 3D unsteady RANS simulation. The objective is to both to validate the computational model and, where possible, explore some physical aspects of the phenomena. Unsteady simulations are presented, performe

Advocates have long raised concerns about the potential for partner violence after a spouse’s or partner’s return from prison, but few programs or policies exist to prevent it. In an era in which experiences of incarceration and reentry—and by extension, experiences of a partner’s or coparent’s incarceration and reentry—are commonplace in low-income urban communities, the safety of families reuniting after a prison stay merits serious attention. The current study examines qualitative data from 167 reentering men and their partners to identify contextual influences on post-prison partner violen

This paper presents a systematic overview of the evidence of violence against women in the Central America, Mexico, Panama, Haiti, and Dominican Republic region and examines its impact on the well-being of women and their children. Population-based surveys show that violence against women remains a widespread issue in the region. The proportion of women who have experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime varies between 13% and 53%; Panama has the lowest rate while Mexico and El Salvador have the highest.
