Abstract:
Although knowledge of torture and physical and psychological abuse was widespread at both the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and known to medical personnel, there was no official report before the January 2004 Army investigation of military health personnel reporting abuse, degradation, or signs of torture. Mounting information from many sources, including Pentagon documents, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, etc., indicate that medical personnel failed to maintain medical records, conduct routine medical examinations, provide proper care of disabled and injured detainees, accurately report illnesses and injuries, and falsified medical records and death certificates. Medical personnel and medical information was also used to design and implement psychologically and physically coercive interrogations. The United States military medical system failed to protect detainee's human rights, violated the basic principles of medical ethics and ignored the basic tenets of medical professionalism.

Abstract:
The present investigation examined the association between marital investment, marital satisfaction, and commitment to marriage among physically abused women. We applied an investment model and a social learning model to understanding victimized wives’ satisfaction and commitment to stay married. Thirty wives who reported physical abuse and 58 nonabused wives completed measures of marital stability, investment in marital problem solving, and dyadic adjustment. Investment in marital problem solving was assessed by having subjects indicate how much energy that they have put into solving 34 common marital problems and whether their efforts were successful or not successful. Consistent with a social learning model but counter to an investment perspective, correlational and multiple regression analyses for each group revealed that failed investment was significantly related to lower, not greater, commitment. Group differences also emerged. Whereas nonabused wives’ commitment was related to their dyadic adjustment abused wives’ commitment was related to their level of failed investment. Results are consistent with the notion that women may remain in abusive relationships because of psychological entrapment.

Abstract:
Physical educators have purported to teach children to be physically active and to promote their fitness. To achieve these goals, children should regularly experience moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during physical education lessons. For the purposes of this review, moderate physical activity is that which elicits a heart rate of 50% of maximum heart rate reserve (MHRR), moderate-to-vigorous activity elicits 60% of MHRR, and vigorous activity elicits 75% of MHRR. Duration criteria were set at 50% of lesson time or 20 min. The majority of lessons described in previous reports failed to achieve these criteria, although problems were noted in method and analyses of data. Lessons with physical activity as a direct goal have been successful in increasing MVPA. A greater focus on physical activity is required in the planning and delivery of physical education lessons if the physical activity and fitness goals of the physical education curriculum are to be met.

Abstract:
Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) is a potent survival protein whose depletion triggers massive caspase-independent tumor cell death. Here, we show that Hsp70 exerts its prosurvival function by inhibiting lysosomal membrane permeabilization. The cell death induced by Hsp70 depletion was preceded by the release of lysosomal enzymes into the cytosol and inhibited by pharmacological inhibitors of lysosomal cysteine proteases. Accordingly, the Hsp70-mediated protection against various death stimuli in Hsp70-expressing human tumor cells as well as in immortalized Hsp70 transgenic murine fibroblasts occurred at the level of the lysosomal permeabilization. On the contrary, Hsp70 failed to inhibit the cytochrome c–induced, apoptosome-dependent caspase activation in vitro and Fas ligand–induced, caspase-dependent apoptosis in immortalized fibroblasts. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed that endosomal and lysosomal membranes of tumor cells contained Hsp70. Permeabilization of purified endo/lysosomes by digitonin failed to release Hsp70, suggesting that it is physically associated with the membranes. Finally, Hsp70 positive lysosomes displayed increased size and resistance against chemical and physical membrane destabilization. These data identify Hsp70 as the first survival protein that functions by inhibiting the death-associated permeabilization of lysosomes.

Abstract:
Fire behaviour data from 240 laboratory fires in high-density live chaparral fuel beds were compared with model predictions. Logistic regression was used to develop a model to predict fire spread success in the fuel beds and linear regression was used to predict rate of spread. Predictions from the Rothermel equation and three proposed changes as well as two physically based models were compared with observed spread rates of spread. Flame length–fireline intensity relationships were compared with flame length data. Wind was the most important variable related to spread success. Air temperature, live fuel moisture content, slope angle and fuel bed bulk density were significantly related to spread rate. A flame length–fireline intensity model for Galician shrub fuels was similar to the chaparral data. The Rothermel model failed to predict fire spread in nearly all of the fires that spread using default values. Increasing the moisture of extinction marginally improved its performance. Modifications proposed by Cohen, Wilson and Catchpole also improved predictions. The models successfully predicted fire spread 49 to 69% of the time. Only the physical model predictions fell within a factor of two of actual rates. Mean bias of most models was close to zero. Physically based models generally performed better than empirical models and are recommended for further study.

Abstract:
Physical travel has traditionally been viewed as an agent of transformation. The research conducted on this topic, however, is surprisingly narrow in scope. Few studies have attempted to look beyond a particular tourism/travel segment or discipline and most utilise a restricted range of methods and analysis. These investigations have also failed to consider the long-term impacts of corporeal travel and how changes continue to evolve over time. Drawing upon a holistic and interdisciplinary study of transformative travel, this article argues that in a mobile world, it becomes increasingly difficult for individuals to distance themselves from elements that maintain a particular way of thinking and acting. While a traveller may physically remove their body from a specific geographic location, contemporary and historic flows of people, ideas, information, objects, memories and symbols create mobile spaces, places, landscapes and identities, where both familiarity and difference abound. Transformation through physical travel becomes a complex social phenomenon.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the effects of probiotic supplementation on physically active individuals. The participants, interventions, comparisons, outcome and study design inclusion criteria were (a) studies involving healthy adults or older subjects of both sexes who did physical exercise (including athletes and physically active individuals), (b) interventions with probiotics, (c) inclusion of a control group, (d) outcomes not previously defined, and (e) clinical trials and randomized clinical trials, with no language or date restrictions. The search was conducted in the following scientific databases: MEDLINE, Embase, SciELO, Scopus, and Lilacs. Search terms were “Probiotics” OR “Prebiotics” OR “Microbiota” AND “Exercise” OR “Athletes.” The articles were first screened by title and abstract by two independent reviewers and disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. Data were extracted independently by the same two reviewers; results were extracted in duplicate and then compared to avoid errors. A total of 544 articles were retrieved and 24 were included. A total of 1,680 patients were included, most of them being male (n = 1,134, 67.5%), with a mean age of 30.9 ± 6.1 years. Following probiotic supplementation, positive effects have been reported for several outcomes including respiratory tract infection, immunologic markers, and gastrointestinal symptoms in both athletes and nonathletes. However, published studies have distinct protocols and measured outcomes, and some of them have small sample size and failed to prove beneficial effect on probiotic supplementation, leading to inconclusive results for standardized supplementation protocols.

Abstract:
AbstractWeather radars and gauge observations are the primary observations to determine the coverage and magnitude of precipitation; however, radar and gauge networks have significant coverage gaps, which can underrepresent or even miss the occurrence of precipitation. This is especially noticeable in mountainous regions and in shallow precipitation regimes. The following study presents a methodology to improve spatial representations of precipitation by seamlessly blending multiple precipitation sources within the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system. A high spatiotemporal resolution multisensor merged quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) product (MSQPE) is generated by using gauge-corrected radar QPE as a primary precipitation source with a combination of hourly gauge observations, monthly precipitation climatologies, numerical weather prediction short-term precipitation forecasts, and satellite observations to use in areas of insufficient radar coverage. The merging of the precipitation sources is dependent upon radar coverage based on an updated MRMS radar quality index, surface and atmospheric conditions, topography, gauge locations, and precipitation values. Evaluations of the MSQPE product over the western United States resulted in improved statistical measures over its individual input precipitation sources, particularly the locally gauge-corrected radar QPE. The MSQPE scheme demonstrated its ability to sufficiently fill in areas where radar alone failed to detect precipitation due to significant beam blockage or poor coverage while minimizing the generation of false precipitation and underestimation biases that resulted from radar overshooting precipitation.

Abstract:
In recent years, public health law has seen some important court decisions. Those are presented below. In Pelman v. McDonaldS Corporation, the court dismissed a complaint filed by three children who claimed that McDonald’s practices in making and selling its products were deceptive. This deception, the children alleged, caused them to consume McDonald’s products with great frequency and become obese, thereby injuring their health. The plaintiffs pled five causes of action against McDonald’s, alleging that McDonald’s: 1) failed to adequately disclose the ingredients and health effects of its products and described their food as nutritious without disclosing detrimental health effects; 2) engaged in marketing techniques geared toward inducing children to consume their products; 3) acted negligently in selling foods high in fat, cholesterol, salt, and sugar when studies show that foods containing these ingredients cause obesity and detrimental health effects; 4) failed to warn consumers of the quantity and qualities of levels of fat, cholesterol, salt, and sugar in its products or of the detrimental health effects of such foods; and 5) acted negligently in marketing foods that were physically and psychologically addictive.

Abstract:
This research presents a nudge-based approach to promoting honest behavior. Specifically, we introduce the moral barrier hypothesis, which posits that moral violations can be inhibited by the introduction of spatial boundaries, including ones that do not physically impede the act of transgressing. We found that, as compared to a no barrier condition, children cheated significantly less often when a barrier was strategically placed to divide the space where children were seated from a place that was associated with cheating. This effect was seen both when the barrier took a physical form and when it was purely symbolic. However, the mere presence of a barrier did not reduce cheating: if it failed to separate children from a space that was associated with cheating, children cheated as much as when there was no barrier at all. Taken together, these findings support the moral barrier hypothesis and show that even seemingly unremarkable features of children’s environments can nudge them to act honestly.

Abstract:
In order to improve our knowledge in this field, the research make use of different observation programs to characterize scaling relations of physical properties, to better constrain and understand galaxy population at different stages of their lives throughout the history of the Universe. Since the past decades, studies are trying to extend those scaling relations in the parameter space. It is in this movement that this thesis project fits. The Spectral Energy Distribution(SED) of high redshift galaxies contains the signature of physical properties such as stellar mass, SFR and extinction. In this work, we perform a SED analysis of magnified galaxies at z&gt;3 using deep Hubble, VLT and Spitzer/IRAC images of the Frontier Fields galaxy clusters. Due to the size of the Kband PSF and specially IRAC PSF and the high density of bright cluster members, it is crucial to deblend Kband and IRAC images to get a reliable SED. We do this by automatically fitting the contaminating galaxies with GALFIT, using a custom Python script which accounts for the relative levels of contamination from each cluster member. We model the decontaminated SED using stellar population models. We apply this method to derive SFR, masses and sizes of a sample of 63 galaxies at z&gt;3 detected in the A2744 and MACS0416 fields, spectroscopically confirmed with MUSE. The very strong amplification of these clusters allow us to collect a robust sample of low-mass galaxies (108 M?), probing the low-luminosity part of scaling relations between stellar mass &amp; size and stellar mass &amp; stellar formation rate

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine how teachers see the use of action plans for students in need of special support in physical education. The questions used were: What do the teachers consider being the causes for students not reaching the objectives in physical education? What experiences do four teachers have considering the work with action plans for students in need of special support? And, what experiences have one chosen head of school about establishing action plans for students in need of special support? To reach the answers to these questions qualitative interviews were made with four teachers from different schools. The interviews deal with the teachers views on assessment, curriculum, and the work with action plans for students in need of special support. The results show that that the underlying causes for students not reaching their objectives was either lack of participation or difficulties in certain parts of the subject. Despite this, the teachers write very few action plans even though it appears there are students in need of special support. The head of school whom were interviewed had both knowledge and confidence in working with these types of issues but was rarely informed that there were students in need of special support in physical education.        The conclusion of the study is that the teachers in the survey in most of the cases choose to help and support a student in need of special support without including the principal in the process. In addition the difficulties in grading student in physical education according to the teachers, is grounded in a vague national syllabus for physical education.<br>Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur lärare ser på arbetet med åtgärdsprogram för de eleverna med behov av särskilt stöd inom ämnet Idrott och hälsa.

Abstract:
I present as a central part of the study of the cultural curriculum of Physical Education, a proposal in line with the concerns of Critical Multiculturalism and Cultural Studies with post-structuralism inspiration and that is arranged in a post-modern society and post-colonized. While cultural artefacts, the dances, fights, sports, playing and gymnastics transmits certain meanings and representations of the world, subject and society, being so, social function of Physical Education in this perspective, the theme of these embodied practices so that students can lock up contactwith the representations that convey, in order to broaden your knowledge, deepen and resign over this portion of culture. Without wishing to end the matter, much less structure or generating templates for a curriculum \"artistado\", we investigated how teachers build their curriculum from the concept of \"writing-curriculum\". For this, we map the elements, components, power lines and intensities of the curriculum written recorded by partner teachers, seeking the relationship between educational statements about teaching procedures (mapping, reinterpretation, deepening, expansion, registration and evaluation) and principles (recognition of body culture of the community, curricular justice, avoid cultural blindness, decolonizing the curriculum and social anchoring of knowledge). As a way of data production, we used the Digital Diary, the focus group and collect experience reports. The shape analysis was based on deleuze-guattarian poststructuralist theory, from geophilosophy and theft concepts. In general, the amount of items that came in the curriculum written partner teachers was higher than the elements that differed as to suspect that the writing-curriculum was becoming a formula. We understand that if this is happening, it may be inattention to machinic assemblages since these are largely responsible for the differences. About the teacher\'s role in developing the \"writing-curriculum\" we realized that he is not a mere applier of a set of statements to which subjects and replicates therefore acts within the assemblages, as another, among other forces there acting. Regarding the power lines, which saw the \"writing-curriculum\" can not consist only of lines of flight, much less, only by hardliners. It is produced in endless lines intersect, some molars (hard), such as: educational laws, rules and regulations of the school regulations, the Pedagogical Political Project, cultural design and its teaching procedures; other molecular (flexible): the culture of the students, their desires, attitudes, speech, spatial arrangements, timing and pedagogical principles; and finally, by lines of flight, which as ephemeral not territorializam in pedagogical statements, pass through \"writing-curriculum\" as unexpected events and assemblages, disruptive and creators.

Kadykov, Aleksandr. "Physical properties of HgCdTe-based heterostructures : towards terahertz emission and detection." Thesis, Montpellier, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017MONTS086.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an investigation of mercury-cadmium-telluride (HgCdTe or MCT) based heterostructures for emission and detection of Terahertz (THz) radiations. Due to their specific physical properties, HgCdTe-based heterostructures are indeed expected to play an important role in future terahertz systems. Among other remarkable properties, HgTe/CdTe-based quantum wells (QWs) at the critical thickness (about 6.3 nm), exhibit a gapless state characterized by the linear energy-momentum law of massless Dirac fermions. When the QW width exceeds this critical value, the energy band structure becomes inverted. In this case, these QWs are shown to be two-dimensional topological insulators that attract since the last decade a great fundamental interest. This band inversion can be broken by varying several external physical parameters as magnetic field or temperature. These so-called topological phase transitions could be of high interest for future low-energy consumption and high frequency electronics. Here, focusing on gated devices presenting inverted band ordering, we first evidence the possibility to detect THz incident light at cryogenic temperatures. We also report on an enhancement of the terahertz photoconductive response in the vicinity of the magnetic field driven topological phase transition and close to the charge neutrality point. Secondly, we observed unambiguously the temperature driven phase transition between the topological insulator state and the usual quantum Hall insulator state by magneto-transport experiments. Then, using the non-resonant THz detection technique, we successfully imaged the QWs Landau levels and defined precisely the critical magnetic field corresponding to the quantum phase transition. We found that this THz technique can be used in every gated sample without need neither for four contacts devices nor mathematical data processing.Regarding terahertz emitters, we present here our results on stimulated emission of HgCdTe heterostructures in their conventional semiconductor state above 30 THz, discussing the physical mechanisms involved and promising routes towards the 5–15 THz frequency domain. Despite the fact that the leading materials for long wavelength solid-state lasers are heterostructures based on III-V semiconductors, their Reststrahlen bands makes this frequency range inaccessible for III-V-based lasers (including quantum cascade lasers) even at cryogenic temperatures. Since the lattice absorption band in Hg1-xCdxTe-based heterostructures is shifted to longer wavelengths, these compounds with (x&lt;0.21) seem to be very promising as interband solid-state THz lasers

Abstract:
The shale hydraulic properties make them excellent storage sites and hydrocarbon reservoirs/source rocks. Fault zones can play two roles in the fluid circulation; drains or barriers, in general, both roles are combined within the same fault zone. What are the conditions that promote the fluid circulation along the fault zones in shales and what are the fault zone impacts on the formation properties are relatively poorly explored key questions. This study focused on characterizing the relationships between fault architecture, paleo-fluid as well as current fluid circulations through the analysis of fault calcite mineralization, injection tests and petrophysical properties conducted on a fault zone outcropping underground in the Tournemire research laboratory nested in the Toarcian shale. The fault zone structure was characterized using boreholes data and reconstructed in 3D through modeling to define different deformation facies. No clear facies organization is observed, a fault core and a fault damage zone being difficult to define as it is in hard rocks. The intact, fractured and breccia facies are characterized by a porosity of 9.5-13.5, 10-15 and 13-21%. Large fluid flowrate concentrated along a few “channels” located at the breccia boundaries and in the secondary fault zones that displayed fractured facies and limited breccia fillings. Detailed microstructural and geochemical analysis at the breccia/fractured zones interface revealed that fluids circulated out of the main shear zones, in micro-more or less inherited fractures highlighting a decoupling between fault slip and fluid migrations

Abstract:

Thesis, Paris Est, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PESC1090.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to ask to what extent – especially during adolescence – girls have fewer real opportunities to bicycle than teenage boys. Our results are based both on the statistical exploitation of the latest National Transport and Travel Survey available (ENTD 2008); on direct and indirect observation; on a corpus of 101 semi-structured interviews with 43 boys and 39 girls aged 17 or 18, as well as 26 of their parents, in various geographical and social settings of the Montpellier and Strasbourg metropolises; on a corpus of images (n = 200); on a corpus of electronic discussions (n = 22); and on a corpus of digital articles of information (n = 30).Through a sociological analysis, particularly dispositionnaliste and as much as possible intersectional, we show that gendered cycling socialization deserves to be analyzed in its articulations with the gendered dimensions of physical activities socialization, urban socialization; socialization of risk; heterosexual sexuality socialization, but also in its articulations with gendered beauty norms. If all adolescent girls are not equally subject to the same socializing injunctions – moreover sometimes contradictory to each other – those that mostly affect girls participate in the incorporation or reinforcement of dispositions to protect their bodies, to avoid to physically force, to fear to move alone, to fear to venture and to fear to squat public space. These dispositions are co-produced and mutually reinforced with gendered cycling skills, they can be more or less activated or paused depending on the context. Despite variations – particularly in socio-economic and residential settings – they concern girls from all socio-economic backgrounds and have the effect of restricting their real possibilities to practice in playful, speed, strength, endurance, solitary, adventurous, improvised, "circular ", and "parked" bicycle practices. These observations are particularly related to the reinforcement – during adolescence – of gendered educational practices, mainly motivated by parents' concern to protect their daughters from the risks of sexual violence. However, we must not underestimate the role played by beliefs inherited from religions and the fierce resistance of medicine to women's sport. In the same way, socializing agents embodied by the media and peer groups, but also by the bicycles themselves as well as by the gendered equipments and clothes, must be taken very seriously. Furthermore, the gendered cleavage of real possibilities to bicycle never seems as pronounced as in the particularly disadvantaged sensitive urban zones. In contrast, the cleavage in question appears to be reduced in adolescents (boys and girls) who consider cycling to be both a leisure and their preferred mode of travel. If the group in question is composed – in proportion – of few girls (n = 4), all of them have characteristic competences and dispositions of the opposite sex and benefit from real possibilities to bicycle as well as spatio-temporal access to public space far superior to that of girls as a whole. To the extent that the girls in question also tend to share both characteristic equipments and dispositions of middle-class intellectual fractions, the data collected suggests that cycling deserves to be analyzed at once as a distinctive gendered, social and spatial practice

Abstract:
This study, rooted in physical and sport education, contemplates the body development process of high school students who have started a learning sequence of step practising, within the framework of the CP5 – own competence n° 5. Starting from a holistic approach of the body, which is simultaneously living, experienced and described, the porosity between those three dimensions is deciphered for six high school students. The exploration paths of this thesis are articulated around an epistemological rooting in emersiology, where crossed scientific observations offer an opportunity at tackling the student’s body experience, so as to set up new educational and professional paths for the student to be aware of his/her own body. Several access paths, with self-confronting over a background of audiovisual traces in the first and third persons, and measuring the heart beatings via a cardio frequency-meter, contribute to defining the high school student’s capacity body. The nature of the knowledge built up and updated in the course of the classes speaks in favor of the sensitive perception’s acuity, as a complement to an intense practicing whose aim is to improve the aerobics capabilities. The different results illustrate the way in which the high school student’s esthesiological repertory increases his/her interoceptive cartography, by activation and sensitive awakening, while displaying as a consequence the building up of perceptive know-hows. By questioning two differentiating teaching paths through how his/her effort is felt, the high school students’ esthesiological and sensitive heterogeneity is revealed. While making it possible to singularly assess the living body’s capabilities through the high school student’s aerobics performance in step, these research works incite teachers to co-build an attentive listening attitude towards their bodies by the students, so that their trust in what they experiment is better and favorable to the development of their persons

Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the rights to identity, existence, and non-assimilation in Articles 7(2), 8, and 43, which together enshrine rights to the protection of indigenous peoples' continued survival and existence, both physically as individuals and as cultural entities in accordance with levels of human dignity and well-being. Indigenous peoples pressed for the inclusion of such principles in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in the recognition that pre-existing international, regional, and national laws had failed to protect their survival as communities with distinct cultures, or recognise them as distinct peoples. The three provisions studied in this chapter reflect this central concern of indigenous group/cultural survival and flourishing as peoples. As such, the final agreed text of Articles 7(2), 8, and 43 must be seen as containing norms aimed at the development of existing international law, which would protect and confirm indigenous collectivities in ways not currently recognised or only now emerging.

Abstract:
“Plant Sex from Empedocles to Theophrastus” investigates Greek philosophies concerning plants. The Pythagoreans and pre-Socratic philosophers taught that the universe was governed by a divine order that could be understood through mathematical or physical laws, and that “natural laws” were discoverable by observation and logic. This tradition eventually gave rise to modern science. Unlike Plato, who viewed the physical world as “shadows,” knowable only through mathematics and abstract philosophy, Aristotle and Theophrastus regarded everything in the natural world that could be perceived by the senses as both real and knowable, and believed direct observation combined with reason and logic were the most reliable guides to truth. They systematized a prodigious amount of biological information, but were unable to elucidate the problem of plant sex. Theophrastus’ failed to understand the so-called “degeneration” of trees grown from seed because it couldn’t be understood without a two-sex model. Biblical theorists fared no better.

Current physical activity guidelines recommend that adults perform at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity (e.g., brisk walking), or 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity activity (e.g., jogging), or an equivalent combination of these. In the United States and worldwide, many adults fail to meet these recommended activity levels, with deleterious consequences for health, including increased risk of some cancers. This chapter reviews the epidemiologic evidence for links between physical activity and cancer, emphasizing published meta-analyses and the results of a recent large consortium-based study. The authors find the evidence to be convincing that physical activity reduces risk of colon and female breast cancers, and probable that it reduces risk of kidney and endometrial cancers. Moreover, physical activity has been associated with lower risk of cancers of the bladder, liver, gastric cardia, head and neck, esophagus (adenocarcinoma), and myeloma, myeloid leukemia, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Abstract:
Abstract Classical biological control has been used as a management tool for invasive non-native plant species globally for over 200 years. There have been some very successful programmes, most notably on waterweeds, cacti and seed reduction in perennial trees. Seventy per cent of agents released have established in at least one instance, and 66% of the targeted invasive species have showed some level of control. However, some programmes have failed to meet expectations, for example on Lantana camara. The most commonly cited reasons for the failure of establishment or limited efficacy of biological control agents are unsuitable climatic conditions and genotype incompatibility. We propose that antagonistic biotic interactions play a significant role in the outcomes of weed biological control programmes. Induced plant defences (physical and chemical) that can be mounted rapidly by the invasive non-native plants can result in the reduction in agent populations after initial attack. Rapid induction of plant defences have been implicated in the lack of long-term establishment of the agent Falconia intermedia that showed great initial promise against the widespread invasive shrub L. camara. Host range expansion by native natural enemies onto biological control agents have also been shown to reduce population growth of agents. Finally, competition from indigenous plant species aids invasive alien plant population reduction in the presence of herbivory. All three factors have been poorly studied and further work is needed to better explain the outcomes of weed biological control programmes.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter takes the starting point that the power to deter consists of three components: (physical) capacities, concepts (strategy, plans, decision-making procedures) and will (moral, determination, audacity). In case one of these components is underdeveloped or not in place, (coercive) power fails. Modern technologies (e.g. ICT, AI) and strategic insights (e.g. the utility of soft and smart power) urge for a reinterpretation of the ‘physical’ component, and include cyber capacities as well as culture, knowledge or law(fare) as capacities (or power instruments), too. Moreover, and taking cyber capabilities as a test case, these developments put even more weight on the conceptual and moral components of power. This chapter focusses on the legal framework as a key, but underrated, conceptual element of deterrent power. Using cyber threats as a case, it offers a legal framework enabling decision-makers to effectively generate deterrent power by showing which legal bases (should) undergird the employment of the variety of responses available to States. In democratic rule-of-law States, the principles of legitimacy and legality demand that the use of power (instruments) by States must be based on a legal basis and should respect other institutional features too. Through two illustrative vignettes the generic value of the framework will be illustrated for the potential use of power instruments—diplomacy, information, military, economy, culture, legal, knowledge—in its various modalities, including cyber operations. This legal framework, though tailored to cyber capabilities, may be used as a starting point for conceptualising the legal framework for so-called cross domain and cross dimensional, or full spectrum deterrence.

Abstract:
AbstractAdvancing semiconductor technologies increasingly fail to provide expected gains in cost and energy reductions due to reaching the physical limits of Moore’s Law and Dennard scaling. Instead, shrinking semiconductor feature sizes increase a circuit’s susceptibility to soft errors. In order to ensure reliable operation, a significant hardware overhead would be required. The FEHLER project (Flexible Error Handling for Embedded Real-Time Systems) introduces error semantics into the software development process which provide a system with information about the criticality of a given data object to soft errors. Using this information, the overhead required for error correction can be reduced significantly for many applications, since only errors affecting critical data have to be corrected. In this chapter, the fundamental components of FEHLER that cooperate at design and runtime of an embedded system are presented. These include static compiler analyses and transformations as well as a fault-aware microkernel. Using examples of typical embedded applications, the efficiency of the approach is demonstrated, along with an extension towards approximate computing systems.

Abstract:
Confederate veterans returned home, many of them broken physically and mentally, their manhood obliterated. They suffered from war trauma, but also from the humiliation of defeat, the destruction of the Confederacy, loss of their slaves, uncertainty about their future, financial ruin and political impotence. Many veterans, with physical and mental wounds, struggled to reintegrate into civilian life. Their identities as men had been undercut by war and defeat. This chapter traces the trek of southern veterans -- including former POWs, amputees, alcoholics, and addicts -- as they struggled to regain status in the home and in their communities. The most severe cases of veterans suffering the effects of war trauma entered insane asylums with symptoms today we know to be associated with PTSD: violence, paranoia, startle reflex, depression, anxiety, alcoholism or addiction, suicidal thoughts or behavior. Yet Southerners largely failed to grasp the causal link between mental illness and veterans’ military experiences. Struggling veterans exhibited social pathologies like marital conflict and the inability to hold a job. Suicide provided an exit from failure and suffering.

Abstract:
Lawrence repeatedly associates illness with moments of bodily intensity. His ill protagonists show opposing tendencies: demonstrating a failed integration with the body, but also moments of heightened existence and revelation. Lawrence develops a physiological conception of the subject, judging culture and bodily experience, using pathological ideas. He interweaves the ill body’s literal and metaphorical aspects in discussions of education, sympathy, and writing. ‘Sun’ and Sons and Lovers use illness to stage failures of interpersonal relations. This is contrasted with the positive valence of illness in The Rainbow, where a fever brings revelation. Finally, the chapter juxtaposes afflictions in ‘The Blind Man’ with Lady Chatterley’s Lover. The former depicts blindness heightening affective, bodily potency. The latter shows injury estranging Chatterley from his body, reducing its desires and sensations. Mellors is contrasted not as an example of healthful virility, but of sensuality grounded in affliction.

Abstract:
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) provide their functionality by the interaction of various subsystems. CPS usually operate in uncertain environments and are often safety-critical. The constituent systems are developed by different stakeholders, who – in most cases – cannot fully know the composing parts at development time. Furthermore, a CPS may reconfigure itself during runtime, for instance in order to adapt to current needs or to handle failures. The information needed for safety assurance is only available at composition or reconfiguration time. To tackle this assurance issue, the authors propose a set of contracts to describe components' safety attributes. The contracts are used to verify the safety robustness of the parts and build a safety case at runtime. The approach is applied to a use case in the automotive domain to illustrate the concepts. In particular, the authors demonstrate safety assurance at upgrade and reconfiguration on the example of ontology-based runtime reconfiguration (ORR). ORR substitutes a failed service by exploiting the implicit redundancy of a system.

Abstract:
Most of the systems are unsuccessful during integration due to insignificant consequences occurring in them. This is due to lack of system scalability that fails to provide an improved workload of the system. This chapter describes the parameters to be measured while evaluating the scalability of the structure. The parameters to be measured are described in a scalability review that represents the problems in it. The primary requirement of CPSs is system reliability because an unreliable system yields service interruption and financial cost. A CPS cannot be set up in critical applications in which system reliability and predictability are inefficient. To provide safety critical systems, a high volume of data is dealt, containing operator-in-loop and operating online constantly. The combined characteristics of physical and computational components allow CPSs to use hybrid dynamical models to integrate discrete and continuous state variables that use computational tools to resolve composite problems.

Abstract:
Cyber-physical systems, also known as CPS, have come to stay. There is no doubt, CPS would one day outnumber humans in industries. How do we evaluate the adaptation progress of these systems considering changing environmental conditions? A failed implementation of a CPS can result to a loss. Since CPSs are designed to automate industrial activities, which are centred on the use of several technologies, collaboration with humans may sometimes be inevitable. CPSs are needed to automate several processes and thus help firms compete favourably within an industry. This chapter focuses on the adaptation of CPS in diverse work environment. Considering the ecosystem of the CPS, the authors present a Bayesian model evaluating the progress of adaptation of a CPS given some known conditions.

Abstract A Flip Chip sample failed short between power and ground. The reference unit had 418Ω and the failed unit with the short had 16.4Ω. Multiple fault isolation techniques were used in an attempt to find the failure with thermal imaging and Magnetic Current Imaging being the only techniques capable of localizing the defect. To physically verify the defect location, the die was detached from the substrate and a die cracked was seen using a visible optical microscope.

Abstract:
Abstract The need to miniaturize in the electronics industry is driving smaller form factors, and resulting in complex packaging innovations such as structures with multiple devices stacked inside a three dimensional package. These structures present a challenge for non-destructive fault isolation. Two such modules recently exhibited failures on the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) during board-level testing. Each module consisted of eight vertically-stacked mini-boards, each mini-board with a single EEPROM microcircuit and capacitor, and connected by external gold metallization to module pins. Both failed modules exhibited low-resistance shorts between multiple pins. The orthogonal structure of the module prompted the use of magnetic current imaging (MCI) in three planes in order to construct an internal three-dimensional current path for each of the failed modules. Magnetic current imaging is able to “look through” non-magnetic, or de-gaussed packaging materials, allowing global imaging without physical deprocessing of the stacked EEPROM modules, in order to construct the internal current path and localize defects. To our knowledge, this is the first time that this has been done. Following global isolation of the defects, two types of magnetic sensors were used in parallel with limited deprocessing in order to more precisely characterize suspect failure locations before actually physically exposing the defects. This paper will show the process for using magnetic current imaging with both SQUID and magnetoresistive (GMR) sensors to isolate defects in two stacked EEPROM packages along with the final physical analysis of the defects. The failure analysis found that these devices were damaged by external heat, possibly during oven pre-conditioning or hot air soldering onto the board. The manufacturer, 3-D Plus, was not implicated in the failure.

Abstract:
Abstract Several product lots were found to suffer from data retention failures in OTP (one time program) devices. PFA (physical failure analysis) was performed on these devices, but nothing abnormal was observed. Cross-sectional TEM (transmission electron microscopy) revealed no physical defects or abnormal CDs (critical dimensions). In order to isolate the failed layer or location, electrical analysis was conducted. Several electrical simulation experiments, designed to test the data retention properties of OTP devices, were preformed. Meilke's method [1] was also used to differentiate between mobile ion contamination and charge trap centers. Besides Meilke's method, a new electrical analysis method was used to verify the analysis results. The results of our analysis suggests that SiN charge trap centers are the root cause for the data retention failures, and the ratio of Si/N is the key to charge trap center formation. Auger analysis was used to physically check the Si/N ratio of OTP devices. The results support our hypothesis. Subsequent DOE (Design Of Experiment) experiments also confirm our analysis results. Key Words: OTP, data retention, Non-visible defect, AFP, charge trap center, mobile ion.

Abstract:
Abstract Advanced drill collar connections have been developed with 10 times extended fatigue life compared with the corresponding replaced connections. More than 4,000 advanced connections have been run in North America. Although these connections have demonstrated substantial fatigue strength improvement in operation, some failures have occurred. Multiple failed connection samples have been retrieved and analyzed for their failure modes and the root causes. In the failure analyses, manufacturing data were reviewed to identify any possible discrepancies between design specifications and manufactured components. The field run data were analyzed for the loading histories of the connections. The downhole fluid properties were also reviewed to identify their possible effects on the connection performances. The bottom hole assemblies were numerically analyzed to determine the loading distributions. The failed connection samples were physically processed and inspected in the metallurgical laboratory. Based on the combined numerical and testing analyses, the conclusions on the failure modes and the root causes were drawn. It was found that the primary failure mode for these connections was fatigue. The root causes for the fatigue failures can be divided into two categories: manufacturing causes and operational causes. Among the manufacturing failure causes, incorrect cold rolling is the primary one. The operation related failures were mainly caused by overloading. Through failure mode and root cause analyses, the manufacturing and operational related risks for the advanced drill collar connections were mitigated accordingly. It therefore greatly improved the quality assurance of the advanced connections.

Abstract:
This study involved challenging nuclear grade high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters under a variety of conditions that can arise in Department of Energy (DOE) applications such as: low or high RH, controlled and uncontrolled challenge, and filters with physically damaged media or seals (i.e., leaks). Reported findings correlate filter function as measured by traditional differential pressure techniques in comparison with simultaneous instrumental determination of up and down stream PM concentrations. Additionally, emission rates and failure signatures will be discussed for filters that have either failed or exceeded their usable lifetime. Significant findings from this effort include the use of thermocouples up and down stream of the filter housing to detect the presence of moisture. Also demonstrated in the moisture challenge series of tests is the effect of repeated wetting of the filter. This produces a phenomenon referred to as transient failure before the tensile strength of the media weakens to the point of physical failure. An evaluation of the effect of particle size distribution of the challenge aerosol on loading capacity of filters is also included. Results for soot and two size distributions of KCl are reported. Loading capacities for filters ranged from approximately 70 g of soot to nearly 900 g for the larger particle size distribution of KCl.

Abstract:
Abstract Recent progress with IDDQ testing has demonstrated the ability to identify a majority of defects in logic ICs. IDDQ testing has also been integrated in fault simulators embedded with automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) algorithms to further extend defect coverage. However, this progress has not eliminated the complex task of defect localization on the silicon level of ICs. To deal with the challenge of faster and more accurate defect localization with greater sensitivity, we have developed a new method based on voltage contrast capabilities for internal localization of IDDQ defects. This method covers an extended range of cases: functional or non functional devices, with or without CAD information, etc... Using only the same test pattern as that used to identify a faulty circuit, the equipotential line of the failure can be located. This approach can also be extended to coupling with netlist information. For example, the equipotential line previously found on the faulty circuit can be compared with the fault simulator output. Then, the site of the simulated defect corresponding to the physical failure can be extracted and local deprocessing with a FIB can be used on the failed circuit to physically reveal the defect with an improved turn around time.

Abstract:
Abstract We report an analysis of a single shared column fail on DRAM technology using a nano-probing technique in this work. The electrical characteristics of the failed transistors show that the column fails were caused by two different failure mechanisms: abnormal contact and implant profiles. We believe that electrical analysis using nano-probing will be a powerful tool for non-visible failure analysis in the future because it is impossible to clearly reveal these two different failure mechanisms solely using physical failure methods.

Abstract:
It has been shown in recent times that the use of structural vibrations is a viable approach in repairing stiction failed MEMS cantilever beams. It has also been observed that such a technique is sensitive to various parametric values associated with the de-sticking of these beams. In the current paper we present experimental results which characterize the ideal cantilever beam. An analytical model of stiction failed MEMS cantilever beams under electrostatic actuation is presented. Physical parameters such as stiffness, bending rigidity, damping, excitation voltage, etc. are incorporated in terms of Mathieu parameters to study the stability of the system. An experimental characterization of natural frequency, Young’s Modulus, and damping ratio, which form important components of the analysis, is presented. Accompanying these results is a description of the experimental set up used for finding these parameters. Experiments were performed at both atmospheric and vacuum pressures. An interferometric microscope mounted above the glass window of the vacuum chamber was used to determine the crack length of each beam and observe the profiles of the arrays of microcantilevers in-situ. A Laser Doppler Vibrometer was used for determination of characterization parameters. The microcantilevers were fabricated using the SUMMiT IV process of Sandia National Laboratories. Structural vibrations were induced by placing an alternating voltage on a cofabricated actuation pad located under the microcantilevers near their anchor point. Theoretical modeling shows the dependence of physical parameters that lead to stiction repair.
