The paper studies issues related to physicochemical and chemical techniques for the modification of wood-polymer composites with a thermoplastic polymer matrix (WPCs) to improve their physical and mechanical properties. The physicochemical modification was performed by photochemical crosslinking with the exposure of WPC specimens to UV irradiation. Chemical modification was performed by introducing benzoyl peroxide into the material composition, leading to chemical crosslinking of polyethylene macromolecules of the WPC polymer matrix. As a result of the study, quantitative characteristics of t

Abstract:
AbstractData-driven machine learning (ML) models are attracting increasing interest in chemical engineering and already partly outperform traditional physical simulations. Previous work in this field has mainly focused on improving the models’ statistical performance while the thereby imparted knowledge has been taken for granted. However, also the structures learned by the model during the training are fascinating yet non-trivial to assess as they are usually high-dimensional. As such, the interpretable communication of the relationship between the learned model and domain knowledge is vital for its evaluation by applying engineers. Specifically, visual analytics enables the interactive exploration of data sets and can thus reveal structures in otherwise too large-scale or too complex data. This chapter focuses on the thermodynamic modeling of mixtures of substances using the so-called activity coefficients as exemplary measures. We present and apply two visualization techniques that enable analyzing high-dimensional learned substance descriptors compared to chemical domain knowledge. We found explanations regarding chemical classes for most of the learned descriptor structures and striking correlations with physicochemical properties.

Nanobiocomposites (NBCs) have many applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, etc. The need for NBC physicochemical characterization is mandatory before investigating their usefulness in developing drug delivery systems. This chapter will explore the basic and the most recent techniques used in the physicochemical characterization of these biocomposites. Examples of physical properties include morphological properties using microscopy (size, porosity, etc.), particle size analysis and surface charge, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties, etc. Examples of chemical properties include molecular weight determination, solubility and purity assessment, degree of functionalization, and gelling properties, using spectroscopic techniques (UV, MS, NMR, etc.). For each property, the following points will be elucidated: sample preparation, factors affecting the accuracy of the test results, examples of data interpretation from the recently published literature, and test limitations, if any.

In fact, the experimental results from any physicochemical technique cannot be accurately evaluated without knowledge of its basic principles in order to account for the advantages and limits of such technique. Thus a wide set of electrochemical techniques (such as cyclic, differential pulse, square wave and hydrodynamic voltammetries, mathematical refinements of voltammetric responses and controlled potential coulometry) that can depict satisfactory the electron transfer ability of a molecule are discussed. In addition, a wide series of electrode mechanisms that can occur in the study of metal complexes are examined and clearly defined.
