Abstract:
As Malaysia strives to become industrialised, numerous water bodies are increasingly dumping grounds for chemicals, sewage, and pollutants. It is considered that pollutant substances are continuously channelled into water bodies and then transferred into organic and inorganic particles, nutrients, pesticides, and herbicides that directly affect the aquatic ecosystem. This paper aims to study the overview of physicochemicals properties for lake water quality in relation to Toyyib environmental assessment. Malaysian water quality assessments are based on several rules, including the National Lake Water Quality Criteria and Standard, Urban Storm Water Management Manual for Malaysia, and National Water Quality Index Standard. As a result of the transmission of physicochemical qualities, water contaminants inflict harm not only on aquatic ecosystems but also on the safe water for human use. These studies indicate the water quality measurements or parameters for assessing the water quality for the Toyyib environment and establish the list of physicochemical properties for water quality assessment on the lake. On the other hand, the methodology applied for each parameter was also studied and presented.

Abstract:
Abstract Hydrocolloids, lipids, and other naturally digestible components are used to make edible film, a type of environmentally friendly packaging. Cassava starch is a form of hydrocolloid that is used as the major component to create edible films. Dry items like coffee grounds enable fungus growth, lowering the quality of the coffee. This study will examine the impact of cinnamon powder addition on edible film properties such as antifungals, physicochemicals, and sensory characteristics. This study had a random design with two replications. The collected data were examined using a one-way ANOVA test, followed by Duncan’s test. The results demonstrated that the diameter of the clear zone increased with increasing cinnamon powder concentration, indicating that the edible film’s capacity to block fungal growth was also increasing. With the addition of cinnamon powder, the physicochemical properties of the edible film were considerably changed. The sensory test revealed that the addition of cinnamon powder significantly changed the aroma but not the taste and color.

For evaluating production processes, determinant factors and quality attributes of atti&amp;eacute;k&amp;eacute;, a production survey and a physicochemical study were carried out. The survey included 170 producers from the departments of Abidjan, Dabou and Jacqueville, major production areas. Traditional atti&amp;eacute;k&amp;eacute; (Adjoukrou, Ebri&amp;eacute;, Alladjan) and a commercial type Garba were investigated for physicochemical analyses. The cassava variety (98% of producers) had no effect on traditional cassava inoculum but had an impact on atti&amp;eacute;k&amp;eacute; quality. The step of fermentation is necessary. The difference between studied atti&amp;eacute;k&amp;eacute; related to microflora of inoculum whose identification may provide adequate explanations on the product. Abstract:
Abstract Batang Integrated Industrial Park (BIIP), Central Java, Indonesia, needs the support of water sources, one of which is groundwater. In addition, industrial waste also can contaminate the groundwater. Therefore, assessing groundwater potential and quality is vital for an environmental baseline to manage sustainable groundwater resources. This research aims to identify the subsurface geology, especially the aquifer system and physicochemicals of groundwater, unprecedented in BIIP. The aquifer system determined the research method through geological surface mapping and geoelectrical surveys. Physicochemical properties, including temperature, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and electrical conductivity (EC), were directly measured in wells and springs in the industrial areas. The result shows that the BIIP is dominated by sand, silt, and clay, with sand as the primary aquifer located in-depth 1.35 to 47 meters, concentrated mainly in the western region and towards the east, decreasing as an unconfined aquifer. Groundwater flows from the south toward the Java Sea in the north. Groundwater has a temperature of around 27.3–30.9°C, pH 5.26–7.47, TDS 49–568 mg/L, and EC 100 – 613 μs/cm. It indicates that the quality and quantity of groundwater in the BIIP are quite suitable for use as raw water.

Abstract:
The effect of temperature on the antibacterial property of fermenting beniseed was assessed on six diarhoeagenic bacteria by keeping the fermenting seeds at 40C and 290C respectively. Both the liquor and the slurry were used in this study. The pH, total titratable acidity, microbial load and the microflora of the samples kept at the two different temperatures was determined daily for 7 days. The results showed that the liquor kept at 290C had its highest antibacterial activities after 24hrs of fermentation while the sample kept at 40C had its highest antibacterial activities after 72hrs of fermentation. The highest inhibitory effect was observed on B.cereus with zone diameter of 42mm by the sample kept at 290C and 36mm the sample kept at 40C. This result, when compared with standard commercial antibiotics showed that the fermenting liquor is more effective against four of the six bacteria used. The microbial load of the fermenting liquor increased from 2.4 x104 cfu/ml to 9.2x106cfu/ml in the sample kept at 290C and 2.4x104 cfu/ml to 2.8 x105 cfu/ml in the sample kept at 40C by day 4. Microorganisms found to be associated with the fermentation are Lactobacillus acidophilus, Pediococcus cerevisiae&nbsp;and&nbsp;Leuconostoc mesenteroides. The pH of the fermenting liquor decreased from 5.50 at day 0 to 4.90 by day 4 for the sample kept at 40C while it decreased to 3.80 by day 4 for the sample kept at 290C. The total titratable acidity for the sample kept at 40C was highest by day 1 with a value of 27.00 and lowest by day 6 with a value of 10.00 while the one kept at 290C recorded the highest value of 56.10 by day 1 and lowest value of 15.50 by day 4. Since the fermented liquor significantly inhibited the growth of the test organisms used, it is therefore suggested that in the absence of antibiotics, fermented beniseed liquor can be used to treat diarrhoea within 24hours in rural areas where they may not be quick access to conventional antibiotics and can be used up to seven days when preserved in refrigerator to combat diarrhoea caused by these organisms.

Abstract:
These properties are modelled through structural equations which consider both the liquid and solid phases, but with a lack of consistency for the granular parameters (in particular the maximum packing fraction of non-model suspensions). The overall objective of this paper is to investigate the dependence of the viscosity of energetic concentrated suspensions on the physicochemical properties of their components. The properties with the most significant impact on the viscosity are chosen using the Design of Experiments methodology. The resulting model accounts for the mass median diameter D50 in small and large particles, the large particles density d, the specific surface area of small particles, the shear stress γ ̇ applied to the suspension, the viscosity of the suspending fluid η_f and a constant value for the volume fraction in solid ϕ≃0.51. Moreover, this model allows predicting the viscosity of the studied suspensions for a volume fraction in solid from 0 to 0.51 %

Abstract:
To further understand the biological interactions that govern our daily lives it is essential to develop new techniques for the robust tethering of immobilized bio-molecules to substrates for applications such as bio-mimicry, diagnostics, and durability as well as further self assembly. Current technologies devised for this purpose include the functionalization and lithography of Langmuir-Blodgett films, self-assembled monolayers and spin-coated layers. Whilst these methods provide suitable surfaces, they suffer from being substrate dependent and inappropriate for complex 3D-geometries, thus prohibiting their application to a wide range of materials. Pulsed plasma polymerised films can overcome this hurdle and are utilised in this thesis to present amine, epoxide, thiol and protein resistant Interfaces. For instance, genomic an-ays have been created via di-sulfide bridge formation between DNA and thiol groups. Whilst proteomic arrays have been fabricated either via electrostatic immobilization of proteins to charged regions surrounded by a protein resistant background, or alternately, covalent attachment to epoxide surface groups. Similarly, glycomic arrays have been produced by the covalent attachment of D-maltose and p-D-galacto-methanethiosulfonate to amine and thiol surface groups respectively. Furthermore, it has been shown that sequential plasmachemical nanolayering can provide a passivated upper layer and a reactive underlayer which can be subsequently exposed via mechanical removal of the top layer, to yield reactive pixels on the micron and nano-scale. Finally, the substrate independent nature of plasma polymers has been utilised for the coating of compact disc surfaces with reactive nanolayers. Subsequent protein immobilization has been accomplished via Inkjet printing and has shown promise for potential use as in point-of-care diagnostics.

Abstract:
The importance of the phthalocyanine molecule has generated interest in diverse fields such as thin films, polymer chemistry, liquid crystals, catalysts and numerable electrical, electronic and biological applications together with traditional applications such as dyes and pigments. These laboratories have, to date, concentrated on the synthesis of functionalised phthalocyanine moieties with properties which can be designed for specific applications and, as a result, a battery of materials has been produced at a rate that far exceeded the rate at which the compounds could be fully characterised. The work presented in this thesis is concerned with the study of a range of materials, already available in the group, with a view to providing information on the behavio L'r of Pcs in various molecular assemblies to develop them for specific applications. Chapter 2 is concerned with thin Pc films. The study concentrates on the thermotropic behaviour of some liquid crystalline Pes fonnulated as spin coated, Langmuir-Blodgett, smeared and sublimed films . Chapter 3 contains an account of photochemical stability studies carried out on a series of octaalkyl Pc both in solution and in the solid phase. The role of the central species, substituents and solvent (if applicable) is explored and the results of a series of experiments designed to probe the mechanistic features of the photochemistry are also presented. The development and characterisation of a series of zinc phthalocyanines as potential photosensitisers for use in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer is covered in chapter 4. The author has carried out photophysical measurements on some octaaJkyl zinc phthalocyanines and comparisons have been made, where appropriate, with other materials currently considered to be promising drug candidates for use in PDT. During the course of this research interesting aggregation and liquid crystal properties were observed for certain zinc and metal-free derivatives. Chapter 5 details how UVVis and IH-NMR. techniques were used to probe these intriguing effects a little further.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior<br>In this work six galactomannans (Adenanthera pavonina, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, Delonix regia, Dimorphera mollis, Prosopis glandulosa, Schizolobium parahyba) and three xyloglucans (Hymenaea courbaril, Mucuna sloanei e Tamarindus indica) were isolated from seed endosperm and cotyledon, respectively, by aqueous extraction followed by precipitation with ethanol. Yield of extraction, monosaccharide ratio, macromolecular parameters as well as molar mass distribution were determined and compared to guar gum (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba), LBG (Ceratonia siliqua) and xanthan (Xanthomonas campestris). Extraction yield in relation to seed mass ranged from 7.0 to 40.63%, with xyloglucan yields higher than the galactomannans ones. Schizolobium parahyba and Caesalpinia pulcherrima galactomannans presented the lowest protein content of 0.05% e 0.08%, respectively. The Mw values ranged from 0.09 â 3.37 x107 g mol-1 Flow curves of hemicelluloses solutions at 1% (w:v) were measured by varying the shear rate from 0.1 to 100 s-1. The resulting data were fit to the Power law e Herschel-Bulkley models. All the hemicelluloses presented shear-thinning behavior. Galactomannan and xyloglucans with different monosaccharide ratio showed similar consistency index; it may be influenced of the galactose distribution pattern on the chains and the interactions among the polysaccharides molecules. Rheological properties were compared and the results suggest new hemicelluloses sources which offer more profound applications in areas such as materials science, medicine e biology.<br>As hemiceluloses sÃo polissacarÃdeos presentes na parede celular de vegetais, onde funcionam como polissacarÃdeos de reserva e possuem uma cadeia principal composta por ligaÃÃes &#946;-(1&#8594;4) em configuraÃÃo equatorial. Full text
Abstract:
First the method of gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) has been used to obtain partition coefficients, K, at infinite dilution on polymeric and non-polymeric phases. About 30-40 solutes were studied per stationary phase. Secondly the method of gas-solid chromatography has been used to obtain adsorption isotherms for a series of adsorbents by the technique of elution by characteristic point (ECP). A single injection of a gas or vapour suffices to obtain the isotherm, and then the limiting Henry's law constant, Kh, for adsorption at low surface coverage. About 20-30 solutes were studied per adsorbent. Experiments were carried out at several levels of relative humidity (RH) 0%, 31% and 53%. The solute compounds used were chosen so as to have a wide range of properties such as polarity (pi*2), hydrogen-bond acidity (alpha[H]2), and hydrogen-bond basicity (beta[H]2). The results as log partition coefficients or -log Henry's constants were analysed by multiple linear regression analysis using equations such as: -LogK[H] or LogK = SPo + s.pi* 2 + a.alpha[H]2 + b.beta[H]2 + 1. LogL[18] where L[18] is the solute Ostwald absorption coefficient on n-hexadecane. In this way, the selectivity of the liquid polymeric phase or solid adsorbent towards classes of compound was investigated and equations for the prediction of further values of LogK or LogK[H] formulated. In parallel with the measurement of partition coefficients on liquid polymeric phases by GLC in this work, partition coefficients for the polymers have been determined using surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices by coworkers at the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington. The results for a series of 8-9 solutes in six polymeric phases show that partition coefficients and patterns of responses predicted through GLC experiments are the same as those found experimentally using coated SAW devices. Hence GLC can be used to evaluate possible coating materials, and by the technique of multiple linear regression analysis, to predict SAW responses for a multitude of vapours.

Abstract:
Abstract Refinery high temperature naphthenic acid corrosion is known to generate oil soluble iron naphthenates and solid iron oxide as corrosion products. Associated chemical reactions have been written for a long time but are barely sufficient to resolve the comprehensive mechanism necessary to model their kinetics. A mechanism for naphthenic acid corrosion is proposed to be proceeding via formation of active intermediate by adopting the Lindemann-Hinshelwood approach. The rate law for the calculation of pure naphthenic acid corrosion rate was derived using a pseudo steady state hypothesis which could simulate laboratory corrosion data reported in the literature. The rate equation was also validated by experimental corrosion tests conducted in a high temperature flow-through reactors for carbon steel using a model oil solution of petroleum derived acids by manipulating solution concentration and temperature. Also, the formation of the solid iron oxide is proposed to be a result of the decay of active intermediate as an alternative mechanism in contrast with the currently accepted thermal decomposition pathway.

Abstract:
For prevention of diabetes mellitus, it is effective to suppress or retard the increase in postprandial blood glucose level. We have already shown that buckwheat albumin inhibits α-amylase and suppresses postprandial hyperglycaemia even after the hydrolysis by digestive enzymes. However, there is no detailed report on the functional properties of buckwheat albumin for its industrial use. In this study, we evaluated emulsifying and foaming properties of buckwheat albumin before and after proteolytic hydrolysis in addition to the thermal stability.Thermal stability of buckwheat albumin was measured as the residual α-amylase inhibitory activity after heating at 100°C for 10–120 min. For the evaluation of emulsifying and foaming properties, buckwheat albumin and its hydrolysates were dissolved in citrate-phosphate buffer at pH 3–6. Emulsifying property was evaluated as the turbidity of emulsion 0–30 min after homogenization of the sample solution with corn oil. Foaming property was measured as foam volume of the sample solution 0–30 min after whipping with a household type mixer. Foaming and emulsifying properties of egg albumin were also measured for comparison.&#x0D;As a result, buckwheat albumin showed high thermal resistance even after boiling for 120 min. Buckwheat albumin showed higher emulsifying and foaming properties than egg albumin in the pH range of 3-6. Although proteolytic hydrolysis reduced emulsifying property of buckwheat albumin, it retained high foaming property. These findings suggest that buckwheat albumin can be applied not only for a functional food material to prevent diabetes but also for a texture improver for bakery products such as bread and cakes.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to present as complete as possible, a picture of our present knowledge about papermaking fibres and their physico-chemical characteristics. The properties of the papermaking fibres are, in most cases, significantly influenced by the morphology of the wood fibres, but, from one and the same kind of wood fibres, paper can be produced with widely different properties as a result of different pulping and papermaking processes. Dissolution of material from the fibre wall and the middle lamella, structural changes of the polymeric material, and mechanical work on the fibrous material (defibration, refining, and to a certain extent undesired mechanical damage to the fibres in the pulp mill machinery) combine to produce the fibre properties required in the papermaking process. Starting from the structure of the wood, a survey is given of the pattern of dissolution of different important pulping processes and the resulting bulk composition of the pulps. Characterisation of papermaking properties should include effects of both bulk and surface of the fibres and for that reason they are both discussed. The bulk composition has been studied for many years and we have a fairly good knowledge of the main features, although there is still a need for more detailed knowledge. The properties of the fibre surface are less known, but they have been the subject of several recent studies. They are therefore dealt with in more detail, particularly the problem of making reliable and relevant measurements. Dissolution of lignin and other components in the pulping process is also important for the chemical composition of the surface. Mechanical removal of the remaining middle lamella and the outer layers of the fibre wall (the primary wall and SI of the secondary wall) substantially change the surface composition and create fines with a large surface area, which may interact with the wet-end chemicals in the paper mill and decrease the over-all effects of these chemicals. Removal of the outer layers will also change the fibre properties as a whole since, for instance, the SI layer restricts outward swelling of the main part of the secondary wall, S2, and preserves fibre rigidity. Swelling of the fibres influences there fining behaviour of a pulp. For lignin-containing pulps, swelling facilitates refining. For bleached pulps with a very low content of residual lignin, the effect of swelling on refining is rather difficult to as will be briefly discussed.
