Together with the current antibiotic resistance crisis, bacterial persistence appears to play an increasingly important role in the frequent failure of antibiotic treatments. Persister cells are rare bacteria that transiently become drug tolerant, allowing them to survive lethal concentrations of bactericidal antibiotics. Upon antibiotic removal, persister cells are able to resume growth and give rise to a new bacterial population as sensitive to the antibiotic as the original population. Photoperiod manipulations are widely used throughout the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farming industry as a means of producing a product of uniform quality all-year round. However, farmers still remain sceptical over their effectiveness to regulate growth and maturation during the on-growing stage. Furthermore, reports of a characteristic growth-dip following light exposure suggest that light may negatively affect the physiological performance of fish in the short-term. Thus, this thesis investigates the effects of light characteristics (spectral quality, intensity and photoperiod) on growth

Feeding occurs well over 2500 times in the first year of life, raising the possibility that iterative effects on cognition may have cumulative effects over time. We recently demonstrated feeding enhancement of memory in two-to-three day old infants. Infants tested after a feed (versus before) displayed better mem

It charts the emergence of ‘psychological reflex action’, a key concept that facilitated a view of emotion as automated and involuntary, and thus prone to malfunction. The chapter follows the trajectory of psychological reflexion from internal scientific medicine to what became known as ‘physiological psychology’, where it provided mid-century British writers with the tools to create a biomedical framew

An important mode of failure with the implant alloys, e.g., UNS R56400 (Ti-6Al-4V; Ti64), is aseptic loosening. This is a phenomenon initiated by the release of particles from the implants, leading to excessive bone erosion.
