Abstract:
Background We report the occurrence of palinopsia in patients with migraine and its correlation with migraine characteristics, triggers and allodynia. Methods This study included 153 consecutive patients with migraine and recorded their clinical details, including allodynia and migraine triggers and characteristics. Palinopsia was evaluated in migraineurs and 101 controls by using a questionnaire and a novel method. Results According to the questionnaire assessment, 9.8% migraineurs had palinopsia. According to the novel method, 57.5% of migraineurs and 12% of controls had palinopsia. Migraineurs most frequently had palinopsia to red color (51.6%), followed by yellow (49.7%), blue (47.7%), green (46.4%) and the least to white (30.7%). A similar pattern with a lesser frequency was noted in controls. The duration of palinopsia was longer in migraineurs than in controls (32.68 ± 20.24 vs. 5.92 ± 4.55 seconds; p < 0.001). Migraineurs with palinopsia differed from those without in terms of noise as a migraine trigger ( p < 0.001) and allodynia as a migraine-associated phenomenon ( p = 0.03). In multivariable analysis, predictors of palinopsia were the frequency ( p = 0.003) and severity ( p = 0.04) of headache and the presence of headache during examination ( p = 0.0001). Conclusion Migraineurs had a pattern of palinopsia to different colors that was similar to the controls, but the palinopsia of migraineurs was more frequent and of longer duration, especially during headaches.

Abstract:
Signaling mechanisms that govern physiological and morphological responses to change the cell density are common in bacteria. Quorum sensing is signal transduction processes which involves the production and release of and response to hormone-like molecules (auto-inducers) that accumulate in the external environment as the cell population grows. Quorum sensing is found in a wide variety of bacteria, both Gram-positive and Gram-negative and the spectrum of physiological functions that can be regulated is impressive. Variation in the nature of the extra-cellular signal in the signal detection machinery and in the mechanisms of signal transmission demonstrates the evolutionary adaptability of quorum sensing systems for multiple uses.

Abstract:
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is acutely increased following a high-protein meal or systemic infusion of amino acids. The mechanisms underlying this renal functional response remain to be fully elucidated. Nevertheless, they appear to culminate in preglomerular vasodilation. Inhibition of the tubuloglomerular feedback signal appears critical. However, nitric oxide, vasodilator prostaglandins, and glucagon also appear important. The increase in GFR during amino acid infusion reveals a “renal reserve,” which can be utilized when the physiological demand for single nephron GFR increases. This has led to the concept that in subclinical renal disease, before basal GFR begins to reduce, renal functional reserve can be recruited in a manner that preserves renal function. The extension of this concept is that once a decline in basal GFR can be detected, renal disease is already well progressed. This concept likely applies both in the contexts of chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury. Critically, its corollary is that deficits in renal functional reserve have the potential to provide early detection of renal dysfunction before basal GFR is reduced. There is growing evidence that the renal response to infusion of amino acids can be used to identify patients at risk of developing either chronic kidney disease or acute kidney injury and as a treatment target for acute kidney injury. However, large multicenter clinical trials are required to test these propositions. A renewed effort to understand the renal physiology underlying the response to amino acid infusion is also warranted.

Abstract:
The purpose of our article is to analyze resourcefulness of a personality as a psychological phenomenon; to show the characteristics of personal resourcefulness of the individual as a special mental state; to propose the classification of the structural components of the psychological resourcefulness of a personality. Methods of the research. The following theoretical methods of the research were used to solve the tasks formulated in the article: a categorical method, structural and functional methods, the methods of the analysis, systematization, modeling, and generalization. The results of the research. Considering the functional state of the psychological resourcefulness of a personality, it is necessary to distinguish two qualitatively different sides in its structure: subjective and objective ones. Such a division is due to the presence of the following two functions of this dynamic structure, which is the psychological resourcefulness of the individual: ensuring motivational (or goal-directed) behavior and restoring the disturbed homeostasis of the psychological resourcefulness of a personality. Moreover, the subjective side of the psychological resourcefulness of a personality is reflected primarily in the experiences of the subject and determines the features of the formation of highly motivated behavior of a personality. In turn, the objective side of the psychological resourcefulness of a personality is associated with physiological processes and determines the features of the regulation of homeostasis. Conclusions. We proved, that for any person the subjective side of the functional state of the psychological resourcefulness of a personality was leading, since during adaptive restructuring, subjective shifts, as a rule, precede all objective components of the psychological resourcefulness of a personality. This position reflects a general physiological regularity of the psychological resourcefulness of a personality, which consists in the fact that the mechanisms of regulation of the components of psychological resourcefulness of a personality begin active work much earlier than the systems controlled by them, which are a part of the structure of the psychological resourcefulness of a personality.

Abstract:
The efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion is closely related to Deqi phenomenons, which are some subjective feelings. However, no one has reported the objective characterization of Deqi. Our preliminary research has found a phenomenon of tail temperature increasing (TTI) obviously in some stroke rats by suspended moxibustion at the acupoint dà zhuī (DU 14), which is similar to one characterization of Deqi during moxibustion that moxibustion heat is transferred from the original moxibustion acupoint to the other areas of the body. We wonder whether TTI is the objective indicator of Deqi characterization in animals. The present study showed that the stroke rat’s recovery was also associated with TTI phenomenon. This suggests that TTI phenomenon is one objective characterization of the Deqi in stroke rats. Application of the TTI phenomenon contributes to explore the physiological mechanism of Deqi.

Varfolomeev, F. V. "Euphemization of human physiology and physiological needs in modernist English literature on the example of J. Joyce’s novel “Ulysses”." Philology and Culture, no. 1 (April 26, 2025): 23–27. https://doi.org/10.26907/2782-4756-2025-79-1-23-27.

Full text
Abstract:
The article studies the features of the euphemization of human physiology and physiological needs in modernist English literature (based on the novel by J. Joyce’s “Ulysses”). The relevance of the article is the necessity of the phenomenon of euphemization to improve and preserve the integrity of languages to a certain extent, due to the formation of “political correctness” as a public phenomenon. Constant lexical changes in the language (neologisms, dysphemisms, argot words, etc.) and their connection with taboo contexts (“death”, “woman”, “physiology”, etc.) can lead to the violation of its integrity and rules, as well as to the degradation of society as a whole. In addition, the concept of “physiology and physiological needs” has been unacceptable and is still considered unethical in oral and written (including literary) form till this day. To reduce the level of usage of such vocabulary, it is important to study euphemization as a linguistic and cultural phenomenon. The novelty of the article is an attempt to study the phenomenon of euphemization in one of the taboo contexts “physiology and physiological needs”, whose unethicality did not affect J. Joyce’s writing of his novel “Ulysses”. The writer uses euphemisms to reflect this taboo concept, and deliberately breaks language rules in the novel. The purpose of the article is to study euphemization as a linguistic and cultural phenomenon in the taboo context of “physiology and physiological needs” based on specific literary material. The tasks are as follows: 1) to investigate the linguistic and cultural phenomenon of euphemization, its features and functions; 2) to analyze the relationship between euphemization and formed British character, as well as between the taboo concept of “physiology and physiological needs”, language in general and obscene vocabulary; 3) to give examples of the studied concept’s euphemisms from the novel “Ulysses” by J. Joyce.

Abstract:
The latest years, characterized by the Covid-19 pandemic and major geopolitical crises, have brought several abrupt social changes, which in turn heavily affected mental health. One of the most spread consequences of worldwide upset is financial anxiety or the sense of unsafety about one’s economic condition. Despite the evidence of its weight in individual and societal lives, it is commonly regarded merely as a subtype of anxiety state. Accordingly, so far, objective factors and a few subjective characteristics related to financial anxiety have been considered. However, a multidimensional model of this phenomenon including cognitive, personality, and physiological traits is strongly required. The impact of financial anxiety on mental health and dysfunctional economic behavior compels the adoption of a multifaceted research approach to develop clinical, economic, and political measures to support the individual and society.

Ramos, Gustavo Campos. "Inflammation as an Animal Development Phenomenon." Clinical and Developmental Immunology 2012 (2012): 1–8. http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/983203.

Abstract:
Inflammation is a term that has been used throughout history in different contexts; it may represent a simple collection of clinical symptoms for which drugs are developed, a disease mechanism, or even a defense mechanism against microbes validating Pasteur's studies on bacteriology and Darwin's proposed struggle for survival. Thus, an explanation of this term must also consider the scientific questions addressed. In this study, I propose that several of the inflammatory events typically described in immunological, pathological, and pharmacological contexts can also be perceived as mechanisms of animal development. Thus, by recognizing that the generation of an animal form, its conservation, and its regeneration after tissue damage are phenomena of the same nature, inflammation can be addressed through the approach of developmental biology, thereby acquiring a much neglected physiological counterpart.

Abstract:
These studies were performed to assess the effects of various exocrine pancreatic stimuli on somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) secretion in pure rat pancreatic juice. Ingestion of a meal and subcutaneous injections of caeruiein (CA), secretin (SE), and their combination (CA + SE) were compared. Basal fasting SLI output over 5½ h averaged 13.7 ng/30 min; the response to feeding resulted in decreased SLI outputs from 9.7 to 1.7 ng/30 min, a reduction of 81%. SLI secretion following CA, SE, and CA + SE was similar to that obtained following feeding but the reductions of 29, 32, and 39% were less marked and of shorter duration. A return to basal SLI levels was observed only 2½ h following CA administration. Increases in pancreatic volume and protein outputs following CA, SE, and CA + SE were comparable to the feeding response although less pronounced. These data indicate that SLI secretion in pure pancreatic juice can be modulated by two peptides and feeding and that its release is reduced when compared with increases in pancreatic volume and protein secretion. The observation that the peptide's response in terms of SLI output as well as protein and volume were in the same range, although less sustained than the response to a meal, indicates that all stimuli used induced a physiological response of the pancreas.

Post discharge recovery was a process of returning to normal as defined by pre-illness comparative standards of physical, social, and psychological well-being that progressed sequentially in three phases: passivity, activity resumption, and stabilization. Decisions concerning phase progression were made by integrating physiological and health professional cues with self-imposed and situational pressures. Subjects who perceived negative physical symptoms, especially fatigue, and who were unable to respond to pressures expressed frustration with the recovery process. Abstract. Reactions to recently ignored stimuli are slowed down or more error prone when compared to reactions to control stimuli. This so-called negative priming effect has been traditionally investigated in the area of selective attention. More recent theory developments conceptualize the negative priming effect as a memory phenomenon. This review presents four models to explain the phenomenon as well as their essential empirical evidence. The review also considers several negative priming characteristics - that is stimulus modality, prime selection and prime response requirement, probe interference, stimulus repetition, aging and thought disorders, and physiological correlates. On these bases, it is concluded that only the distractor inhibition and the episodic retrieval models have survived empirical testing so far. Whereas evidence has increased that negative priming clearly obeys memory retrieval principles, the distractor inhibition model has lost much of its persuasiveness within recent years.

Abstract:
The analysis of drought as a phenomenon and the proposal of how to define and quantify the deficiency of water in soil for plants, so called physiological drought, are described. The presented approach is based on the theoretical considerations supported by empirically estimated relationships between the biomass production of a particular plant and the transpiration total of this plant during its vegetation period. This relationship is linear and is valid for particular plant and environmental conditions (nutrition, agrotechnics). Optimal plant production can be reached for maximum seasonal transpiration total, therefore the potential transpiration total corresponds to the maximum possible yield. The transpiration rate lower than the potential one leads to a biomass production decrease. This phenomenon can be used to define the physiological drought, under which the soil water content in the root zone decreases below the so called critical soil water content of limited availability for plants, under which the transpiration rate drops below its potential transpiration rate. Methodology is illustrated on the basis of the results of mathematical modelling of soil water movement in Soil – Plant – Atmosphere system, with loamy soil and maize canopy.

Abstract:
The difference between physiological tibial rotation and rotatory instability of the knee, particularly the ‘pivot shift’ phenomenon, was investigated by analysing knee movements under both rotatory and valgus torques using 29 fresh cadaveric knees. The knee movements were measured in three dimensions using biplanar photography, when all ligaments were intact, and then after the ligaments were sequentially sectioned. The axis of the physiological tibial rotation was shown to be located about the centre of the tibial plateaux, while that of the pivot shift is located about the medial collateral ligament (MCL). When the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was sectioned, little or no significant change in physiological tibial rotation was observed under rotary torques, while a significant rotatory instability, including the ‘pivot shift’ phenomenon, was observed under a valgus torque. It was thus concluded that the rotatory instability is not simply an increase in the magnitude of the physiological rotation of the tibia, but is an abnormal tibial rotation which occurs with a different mechanism.

Abstract:
Platelets are unique blood elements that, in addition to blood coagulation, modulate the processes of fibrinolysis, inflammation, physiological regeneration, repair, angiogenesis, bone tissue formation, formation of the mother-placenta-fetus system, etc. Of particular interest is the phenomenon of spontaneous platelet aggregation in vivo under various physiological and pathological conditions, which is associated with expanded capabilities for assessing the risks of thrombotic events. A separate aspect of this problem is associated with the study of the mechanisms and biological role of reversible platelet aggregation. To date, the significance of this phenomenon under normal and pathological conditions remains not entirely clear. This review is devoted to the phenomenon of spontaneous reversible platelet aggregation, the modern understanding of its mechanisms, approaches to its diagnosis and its association with various pathological conditions.

Abstract:
Introduction. Modern rapidly changing society requires significant adaptive abilities of a person because the success of both professional and cognitive activities depends on the degree of adaptation. The paper aims to conduct the content analysis of the phenomenon of adaptation. Materials and methods. The philosophical and psychological-pedagogical literature was analyzed, and subsequent generalization was made to accomplish this objective. Research result. The study indicates that adaptation is a process of changing to fit the environment, which can occur at various levels: biological, physiological, psychological, social, social-psychological, and social-pedagogical. Adaptation is an individual process based on the examination of the needs and motives of a person. Furthermore, there is a difference between adaptation as a process and adaptability as a result. There are also several types of adaptation: alloplastic and autoplastic, as well as external and internal. Conclusion. The findings have indicated the main features, approaches, and varieties of the adaptation process; and the characteristic of the phenomenon of adaptation within various forms and categories. Abstract:
This article presents an interdisciplinary analysis of the phenomenon Info-Digital Addiction (IDA) as a novel form of behavioral addiction, characterized by neurophysiological, physiological, cognitive, psycho-emotional and social consequences. The study is based on a systematic review of contemporary scientific publications, as well as a comparative analysis of diagnostic criteria for various forms of behavioral addictions. The mechanisms of IDA formation are examined, including neurophysiological and physiological changes such as dopaminergic imbalance, chronic stress, circadian rhythm disruption and impaired cognitive control and etc. The primary forms of this addiction are identified. Special attention is given to diagnostic criteria and the projected evolution of IDA in the context of widespread digitalization. Preventive strategies are proposed, encompassing educational, medical, and social interventions. The necessity of further research on the disorder's impact on human physiology, brain neuroplasticity, social adaptation and public health is emphasized.

Abstract:
Child poverty occupies a special place in the fight against poverty of national governments and international organizations. Reducing child poverty and eradicating child extreme poverty should be a priority in the social and economic policy of any state. The aim of the study is to analyze child poverty in Russia, the United States and developing countries. Special attention is paid to the analysis of approaches to the study and tracking of child poverty by national systems and international organizations; the special significance of the negative impact of poverty in children on epigenetic, immunological, physiological, psychological types of adaptation at the age of 2-3 years was noted. This requires effective regulation to offset the negative impact of extreme poverty on children. it is substantiated that the policy of state aid to poor families with children in the Russian Federation should not be based on income poverty indicators. The influence of the depression of the Russian economy in 2014 on a sharp increase in the proportion of poor families with three or more children is shown. The special role of the experience of shame and threats to their dignity by poor children, which penetrate into all aspects of the life of poor children, negatively affects their future, is noted. The study of the role of the family, society, state, and international organizations in the elimination of child poverty in its extreme forms showed that the eradication of child poverty should be a top priority in any country.

AbstractThis paper describes a model of cell death, called autophagy, one among other typical and atypical processes of cell death. This phenomenon is present in the organism, from conception until death, and is conditioned by many genes of ATG family, or mTOR kinase and specific proteins, like BNIP3. This process plays a very important role not only in physiological functions of the organism but also in pathological, such as Alzheimer or Huntington disease, as well as diseases caused by viruses.

Abstract:
In recent years, migration processes have been significantly stimulated and accelerated by the transformations produced in the post-communist space. In this context, the Republic of Moldova presents an example of a country with an intense emigration of the population, determined by the precariousness of the current economic situation. The data regarding the number of labor migrants from the Republic of Moldova attest to a certain state of mind, an orientation, which sees emigration as a solution to the problem of survival. It is obvious that the tendency towards emigration strongly marks the social-psychological atmosphere of reality in Moldova, as well as in other post-communist areas. The theoretical and methodological foundation of the study of migration involved the research of several aspects related to migration. Thorough knowledge of migration theories provides an overview of the evolution over time of the migration phenomenon.
