Abstract:
One of the inevitable and crucial elements of a physiotherapist’s work, in addition to professional competence, is physical fitness. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the level of health and physical fitness of the first year physiotherapy program students in Tartu Health Care College (THCC) and Kaunas College of Applied Sciences (KCAS). The subjects were 20 and 29 physiotherapy students, respectively. The students’ physical fitness has been assessed by the following tests: Hand grip test, Stork test, ACSM’s push up test, Biering–Sorensen test, ACSM’s curl up test, YMCA sit– and– reach test, and Harvard step–test. The physical fitness level of THCC students were average and below average in different categories. Only the endurance of the abdominal muscle of THCC male students was “excellent”. However, the health indicators (BMI and waist-hip ratio) of both gender of THCC remained within normal range. In most tests, both male and female students from KCAS received a good grade and their avarage fitness level was better than students from THCC. Despite the fact that BMI results of KCAS students remained within normal range and did not differ from THCC students result, their waist–hip ratio was higher. This may indicate an increased abdominal obesity and thereby health risk. In conclusion, the fintess level of the first-year physiotherapy students of THCC is not satisfactory that can negatively affect their future health and coping with future work.

Abstract:
Objectives: To examine the current trends, challenges and future perspectives of physiotherapy in terms of social awareness, job availability and career orientation. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 physiotherapy students at Rawalpindi Medical University Rawalpindi, Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi and Maroof International Hospital Islamabad for 6 months. Non-probability convenience sampling was used. Fresh graduates of physiotherapy and postgraduate students studying physiotherapy were included in this study. All the students having experience of more than 3 years and students other than physiotherapy profession were excluded. Questionnaire was designed according to Likert scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Statistical analysis was done to analyse findings and interpret the results. Results: The results showed that Pakistani government is taking initiative to some extent to promote the scope of physiotherapy but in the meanwhile social unawareness, job unavailability, and lack of clinical facilities are yet required to be considered. Conclusion: Physiotherapy in Pakistan is at its developing phase and needs a lot of improvement. There are limited job opportunities and limited education facilities in institutes. Advertisement of the potential benefits of this profession can increase the number of job opportunities in both public and private sectors.

Abstract:
Background: Physiotherapy plays a significant role in the health care system. The pursuit of a career in any profession by secondary school students depends largely on the availability of information about the practice and prospects of the profession. This study aimed at investigating whether secondary school students know about physiotherapy as a profession. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey involving eight hundred and two senior secondary school students in Maiduguri. Multi-stage and systematic random sampling techniques were used in selecting thirty schools in Maiduguri whose students participated in this study. A 37-item questionnaire from previous literature comprising of socio-demographic characteristics of participants, knowledge of participants about physiotherapy as a course, knowledge of participants about physiotherapists’ tasks and characteristics, and sources of their information about physiotherapy, was adapted for this study. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: Responses of eight hundred and two participants, 446 female and 356 males with a mean age of 16.90±2.22 were included in this study. More than half of the participants (59.1%) had a high knowledge of physiotherapy as a career. The most common sources of information about physiotherapy were from a family member (48.5%), a movie (54.7%), and the school career counsellor (54.5%).Conclusions: Half of the participants demonstrated a high level of knowledge of physiotherapy as a profession whereas a good number seemed to have little or no knowledge about the physiotherapy profession. The physiotherapy professional body should work towards increasing the level of knowledge of physiotherapy practice by creating avenues for career talks and awareness programs.

Abstract:
Physiotherapy students have wide range of diversity in their learning preferences therefore this has been always a challenged for the teachers to meet their demands. Understanding learning style preference encourages both students and teachers to continuously update themselves resulting in greater educational satisfaction. Study was performed to find out differences of learning preferences from first to final year physiotherapy students of LJ Institute of physiotherapy, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Total 220 physiotherapy students from all four years were invited to participate in study, out of which 161 students (male: 49, female: 112) voluntarily participated in study. A web-based survey was implemented in this study which included VARK questionnaire and we found 72.7% students have multimodal learning style and kinaesthetic was the preferred sensory modalities of learning for most of the years but final year also showed more aural learning. Most of the male students in our study showed kinaesthetic learning and previous year academic performance also has influence on learning preference. Key words: VARK, learning style, Physiotherapy.

Abstract:
Purpose: The study aimed to provide inputs that would help to promote Community Physiotherapy as a field of future study and work. While the focus was on undergraduate physiotherapy students’ perceptions, attitudes and beliefs regarding this field of specialisation, the study also attempted to find whether there were variations in attitude depending on which year of the programme the students belonged to.Method: In December 2015, 118 students of a private physiotherapy college in Gujarat, India, took part in a self-administered questionnaire-based survey. Of these, 56 students were in the third year of their course, while the rest were in the final year. Written informed consent was taken from each respondent. Results: While it was a positive finding to note that this cohort viewed physiotherapy as a service profession, majority of the students wished to pursue higher education outside India due to their perceptions about lack of adequate training facilities, salaries and scope for the profession within the country. For the majority, musculoskeletal sciences was the preferred area of specialisation, followed by Community Health. However, there was awareness about the importance of Community Physiotherapy. Conclusion: Among undergraduate physiotherapy students in the study sample, musculoskeletal sciences is the preferred specialisation, followed by Community Physiotherapy. The year of the programme in which they were studying did not significantly affect their attitudes towards Community Physiotherapy.Limitations: The sample size was too small to compare the differing attitudes of participants from different batches of the course. First and second-year students could not be included since the specialisation of Community Physiotherapy is introduced only in the third year.

Abstract:
Community-based primary healthcare training for health science students is based on the tenets of primary healthcare. The approach seeks to provide clinical education and training for health science students in previously disenfranchised communities. Some South African universities train their physiotherapy students through a community-based primary healthcare approach to undergraduate training. However, there is currently a lack of an integrated model guiding clinical education for physiotherapy clinical education in the country. The aim of this paper was to explore the perceptions of physiotherapy academics about a novel, community-based primary healthcare approach to clinical education for students at a university in South Africa. This study sought to inform the roll-out of an evidence-based model for physiotherapy education. A qualitative explorative approach, using semi-structured interviews with physiotherapy academics at the institution, was used to explore their perceptions of the community-based primary healthcare training platform. Data was analysed using conventional content analysis and was classified into themes and sub-themes. Four overarching themes emerged, namely: curriculum review, constraints to decentralised learning, benefits of community-based clinical education and recommendations for the learning platform. Participating academics believed that community-based primary healthcare training is an approach that influences students to be socially responsive, while providing access to healthcare services, such as rehabilitation, in resource-poor communities in South Africa.

Abstract:
Background- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic Indian governments had issued stay-at-home directives, and as a result, colleges and universities have been shut down across the world. The major response to the pandemic has been to try to move both teaching-learning and assessment lectures online. so, studying the student’s perception of virtual classes is a must to consider the views. This study is important because of the physiotherapy profession's practical and skill-based practice, it is vital that we not lose focus on the non-technical skills that are required for effective clinical practice. Methods- This is an observational study with a study duration was of 1 year. All physiotherapy students from DVVPF’S college of physiotherapy were recruited by purposive sampling method by using a google form. Result- Data has been summarized by using the descriptive analysis method. Our data showed that 108 undergraduate physiotherapy students answered the questionnaire. They shared their experiences about online classes as compared to offline classes. they shared firstly about communication skills. in online classes students experienced that it does provide a platform to improve communication skills most of the time, & sometimes challenges due to the online environment during an emergency may delay the adoption of technology-enabled education. some students have technophobia because of that they cannot communicate on online classes or they faced difficulties. Conclusion- Our study revealed that on basis of the experiences of physiotherapy students’ actual classes are much more efficient and productive as compared to virtual classes.

Abstract:
High-fidelity simulation (Hi-Fi SIM) is increasingly used to provide undergraduate interprofessional education (IPE). Although research has reported positive student feedback, studies have predominantly involved medical and nursing specialties. The present study sought to further explore this area by determining the perceptions of medical, physiotherapy and nursing students participating in the same simulation session. A total of 145 medical, physiotherapy and nursing undergraduate students jointly participated in a novel Hi-Fi SIM IPE programme. Immediately before and after their session, students completed the KidSIM ATTITUDES questionnaire where statements were rated regarding simulation, IPE and human factors. A high score indicated a more positive attitude. Physiotherapy students reported the lowest level of previous Hi-Fi SIM experience. Students from each specialty had more positive attitudes related to simulation, IPE and human factors following their simulation. Physiotherapy students had predominantly less positive attitudes compared with nursing and medical students. Participation in an IPE Hi-Fi SIM session positively impacted on the perceptions of medical, physiotherapy and nursing students regarding the relevance of simulation, IPE and the importance of human factors. Such findings support the use of this learning modality for the provision of IPE in a range of specialties.

Abstract:
In the perspective of career choice, entering university encompasses meanings of self-accomplishment and social status, which are permeated by concepts and ideals people construct in their lives. This study aimed to analyze regimes of truth that permeate career choice in nursing, physiotherapy and nutrition. This qualitative-descriptive study was carried out with undergraduate freshmen. Data were collected through focus groups, evaluated by discourse analysis from a Foucaultian perspective. The following themes emerged from the analysis: - career choice: crowning a process of social differentiation, - reflexes of professions' history of acknowledgement; - career choice beyond professional projects. Discourse highlights that scientific knowledge acquires status in relations of power between different professions and society and is essential that health professional education is linked to public policies that expand the participation of different professions so as to meet demands in favor of integral care.

Abstract:
The need for physiotherapy in the multidisciplinary management of patients with AIDS is generally acknowledged. Physiotherapists should understand the disease, and develop appropriate attitudes towards individuals with AIDS. Data obtained from questionnaires completed at the University of the Western Cape by prospective physiotherapy students between 1991 and 1993, on knowledge of and attitudes about AIDS, were analysed. The same questionnaire was re-administered to a group of physiotherapy students completing their fourth-year of study. Although most of the students indicated accurate knowledge about AIDS, their attitudes were uncertain. Students expressed anxiety about contact with persons with AIDS. The findings suggest the need for the inclusion of AIDS education in the physiotherapy education curriculum at the University of the Western Cape.

Abstract:
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to explore the physiotherapy students’ attitudes towards online anatomy education during Covid-19 pandemic and thus to evaluate the possibile alternatives to improve online anatomy education. Methods: Sixty-four out of 78 first term physiotheraphy students (82%) participated in the study. Students were asked to participate voluntarily in an online survey composed of a Likert’s scale questionnaire. Results: The allocated study time of the students for Anatomy course decreased during the pandemic when compared to the time before the pandemic (p=0.014). The statement which was marked as ‘Totally Agree’ at the highest rate (46.9%) was ‘The questions given within the scope of the theoretical exam were consistent with the course contents’. The students also decided that the questions given within the scope of the theoretical exam were qualified to evaluate their level of anatomy. The marking rate of ‘Totally Agree’ option for this statement was 42.2%. In addition, the students ‘Totally agree’ at a rate of 40.6% that they felt less stressed in the exams of this course when compared to the first semester. Conclusion: It is anticipated that interactive lectures would be more helpful to teach anatomy. Moreover, it seems that anatomy education in physiotherapy and rehabilitation departments may need revisions to improve online anatomy education.

Abstract:
Background In other healthcare professions, there has been extensive research into students’ motivation, but studies aiming to determine what leads individuals to choose a degree in physiotherapy are scarce. This research study had three main objectives: to obtain a sociodemographic profile of first-year physiotherapy students in Catalonia; to determine the factors that lead individuals to choose a degree in physiotherapy; and to determine potential differences, according to gender and country of origin. Methods This is an observational, cross-sectional, multicentre study. Data were collected by means of a self-administered, ad-hoc questionnaire, consisting of 15 Likert scale questions, options ranging from “not influencing at all -1-” to “extremely influencing -5-”. Ten out of the twelve universities in Catalonia (Spain) that offer a degree in physiotherapy participated in this study. The sample consisted of 941 first-year physiotherapy students (55.2% men; mean age 20.1, SD: 3.4). Results The most determinant factors leading individuals to pursue a degree in physiotherapy were: helping others (95.6%); the relationship between physiotherapy and sports (79%); physiotherapy involving manual work (76.4%); and it being perceived as providing multiple job opportunities (75.9%). Male and French students were attracted due to its relation to sports (MD = 0.369, p < 0.001 and MD = 0.130, p < 0.027), perception of it being an easy degree (MD = 0.148, p < 0.001 and MD = 0.091, p < 0.037), admiration for a known physiotherapist (MD = 0.223, p = 0.006 and MD = 0.265, p = 0.001), employability (MD = 0.297, p < 0.001 and MD = 0.706, p < 0.001), good income (MD = 0.190, p = 0.002 and MD = 0.609, p < 0.001) and social recognition (MD = 0.164, p = 0.011 and MD = 0.286, p < 0.001). Helping others (MD = −0.149, p < 0.001) and interest in the sciences (MD = −0.164, p = 0.030) were more determinant for female students. Male students were more guided by recommendation (MD = 0.234, p = 0.001) and to complement previous studies (MD = 0.237, p = 0.016). French students tended to present more interest in the selection of physiotherapy as a wish since childhood (MD = 0.595, p < 0.001), due to its multiple job opportunities (MD = 0.427, p < 0.001) and because of manual work, and did not choose it to complement previous studies (MD = −1.122, p < 0.001). Conclusions The desire to help and care for others, the relation to sports, and involving manual work are the predominant factors that lead students to pursue a degree in physiotherapy. Female students favour helping others and science, whereas male students favour its relation to sports, complementing studies, social factors (admiration, recommendation, friendship) and socioeconomic determinants such as employability, good income or social recognition. When compared to Spanish students, French students were more motivated by its connection to sports, social and socioeconomic factors and some vocational determinants such as being a wish since childhood and interest in a manual profession.

Abstract:
ObjectivesTo explore the perceptions of Australian physiotherapy students about (1) the potential implementation and use of non-medical prescribing by physiotherapists in Australia and (2) how physiotherapist prescribing might impact the care that the physiotherapy profession can provide in the future.DesignA cross-sectional descriptive survey of physiotherapy students across Australia was completed using an online questionnaire developed by subject-experts and pretested (n=10) for internal consistency. A hyperlink to the questionnaire was emailed to all students enrolled in any accredited, entry-level Australian university physiotherapy programme. A reminder email was sent 4 weeks later.SettingParticipants completed an online questionnaire.Participants526 physiotherapy students from universities across all states with entry-level programmes.Outcome measuresQuantitative data underwent primary descriptive analysis. Thematic analysis was used to synthesise qualitative data.Results87% of participants supported the introduction of physiotherapist prescribing in Australia. 91% of participants stated that they would train to prescribe following introduction. Participants identified improvements in clinical and cost effectiveness, timely access to appropriate prescription medicines and optimisation of quality healthcare as key drivers for the introduction.ConclusionsStudent physiotherapists support the introduction of physiotherapist prescribing in Australia, reporting potential benefits for patients, health services and the physiotherapy profession. Stakeholders should use the results of this study in conjunction with supporting literature to inform future decisions regarding physiotherapist prescribing in Australia.
