Abstract:
Seasonal and interannual changes in the taxonomic structure, numbers and biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton, and also in zooplankton production were investigated in the Khadzhybey estuary in 2016 and 2021-2023. Totally 36 species of phytoplankton of five divisions and 24 taxa of zooplankton were found. The highest biomass of phyto- and zooplankton were observed in the middle and upper sections of the estuary. In terms of the quantitative indices of phytoplankton development, the Khadzhybey estuary is a highly eutrophic water body characterized by the constant water bloom formed by Cyanop

Abstract Species diversity is one of the most informative community metrics and is influenced by regional and local factors. We studied the spatial patterns of taxonomic and functional phyto- and zooplankton diversity in 33 lakes from two basaltic plateaus of the arid Patagonia. The aims of our study were to evaluate α, β and γ taxonomic diversity of phyto- and zooplankton; to assess the influence of environmental, spatial, geographical and morphometric factors on phyto- and zooplankton communities and to compare the influence of these variables on the taxonomic and functional composition. β1-

The hydro-chemical data collected today and structural and quantitative parameters of phyto- and zooplankton from Maloe More Strait, Lake Baikal, were analysed. Comparison of current and earlier observations revealed recent alterations in phyto- and zooplankton functions analogous to other areas of Lake Baikal. Major reconstructions in phytoplankton were registered in spring: violation in cycles of annual growth maxima of large-cell Baikalian diatoms and changes in dominant species. Dramatic abundance of rotifers caused the increase by an order of magnitude in pelagic zooplankton numbers in 20

A hypothesis about the formation of horizontal heterogeneities of zooplankton and phytoplankton for the lake subjected to regular daily changes in wind currents has been tested. Formation of horizontal heterogeneities is based on a combination of low-amplitude vertical migration of zooplankton and epilimnion wind currents: surface currents, which bring water depleted in zooplankton to the downwind shore (in the direction in which the wind is blowing), and compensatory above-thermocline ones, which bring zooplankton-enriched water to the upwind shore (against the wind). Plankton is critical in contaminants transfer but its role in mercury’s is to be investigated. The objective was to characterize the plankton continuum’s taxonomy, trophic organization and mercury levels. Bacteria, pico-, nano- and zooplankton were more abundant in the LiB and phytoplankton in the LaB. Mercury levels were higher in the LiB. Contrarily to standard mercury biomagnification pattern in higher trophic levels, the smaller size classes presented higher mercury concentrations decreasing while size increased followed by an inversion of the trend between the two largest size classes.
